2. What is Simple Present?
• The simple present expresses an action in
the present taking place once, never or
several times. It is also used for actions that
take place one after another and for actions
that are set by a timetable or schedule. The
simple present also expresses facts in the
present.
3. Find the spelling rules
• 1) Add –s for most verbs. work – works buy – buys
ride-rides return - returns
• 2) Add –es for words that end in –ch, -s , -sh, -x, or
–z. watch – watches pass–passes rush-rushes relax– relaxes
buzz - buzzes
• 3) Change the –y to –i and add –es when the base
form ends in a consonant +y. study–studies hurry–
hurries dry-dries
• 4)Do not change the –y when the base form ends
in a vowel +y. Add –s play – plays enjoy - enjoys
• 5) A few verbs have irregular forms.

4. What is Simple Past?
• The Simple Past expresses the idea that an
action started and finished at a specific time
in the past. Sometimes, the speaker may not
actually mention the specific time, but they
do have one specific time in mind.
5. Find the verb spelling rules.
1) Regular verbs ending in a silent e take /-d/ in the
simple past and past participle:
close=closed
2) Regular verbs ending in a vowel + y take /-ed/ in the
simple past and past participle:
play=played
3) Regular verbs ending in a consonant + y take /-ied/ in
the simple past and past participle (the y becomes
an i followed by /-ed/)
marry=married
4) All the other regular vebs take /-ed/ in the simple
past and past participle.
visit=visited
6. Simple Past Examples
• Yesterday we listened to the radio for four
hours.
• Some verbs have spelling changes when
adding "ed“
• They live in a big house.
• If the verb ends in -e, just add -d to form the
simple past.
• Yesterday we read all the explanations on
English verbs.
• To use the negative form "did not" (didn´t)
before the verb.

• For He/She/It verbs in the simple present add
an –s at the end
• Mary and John eat pizza often
• For other pronouns, the verb doesn’t
change
• He goes to the park every day.
• Verbs like do or go change in the 3rd person
adding –es instead of -s
