3. WHEN DO WE USE THE PASSIVE?
• When you want to focus on the OBJECT not the subject (or person) of the active
sentence. The OBJECT becomes the subject.
• Reports of crimes or incidents with unknown autor
• My car was stolen yesterday.
• Scientific contexts
• The rat was placed into a T-shaped maze.
• When you want to emphasize an action itself and the subject of the action is irrelevant or
distracting
• My pants were made in Taiwan
4. HOW TO WRITE IT?
• SIMPLE PRESENT
• Object + verb to be (am, is, are) + past participle of the verb
• SIMPLE PAST
• Object + verb to be (was, were) + past participle of the verb
• TO INCLUDE THE SUBJECT add by at the end
