The Essentials of Master's Education in Nursing
The Essentials of Master’s Education in nursing plays an integral role in ensuring that
those pursuing a Master’s degree in nursing a well-equipped with skills and essential knowledge.
The knowledge or skills remain essential in promoting health, leading change and elevating care
at various levels within the nursing fraternity (In Blair & In Mir, 2015). Many students find
different Essentials vital to their specific areas of study but it is noteworthy that all nursing
students should put in practice all the nine Essentials.
The importance of following the essentials of Master’s Education in nursing in a clinical
nurse practitioner program such as the FNU remains essential at all levels of nursing. All nine
essentials help those pursuing nursing to expand their knowledge and understanding. It is
imperative in addressing the numerous complexities that are present in the daily management of
hospitals or patient care. In the healthcare setting, graduates must undergo thorough preparation
for the impending challenging tasks that await them in their career (Melnyk, 2015).
Although all the Essentials are vital for graduates, I find Essential III (Quality
Improvement and Safety) a bit more important. Since the nursing students are bound to face
numerous challenges in their career, they ought to use the appropriate methods, tools,
performance measures, and standards essential for maintaining quality of life. Essential III is
essential in terms of continuous quality improvement purposes (In Blair & In Mir, 2015).
Healthcare organizations always strive to ensure they do not expose patients to injury. Therefore,
Essential III emphasizes safety standards, principles, and quality measures that guarantee patient
safety, which is fundamental to quality care.

Discussion 1
Following the essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing in a
clinical nurse practitioner
program such as the FNU remains important in various aspects.
In contemporary care settings,
expanded nursing knowledge is necessary to address today’s
complexities of health and nursing
care (Melnyk, 2015). It calls for a new conceptualization of
master’s education, which prepared
graduates to navigate and integrate care services, build and lead
in a collaborative manner,
translate evidence into practice, advance a culture of
excellence, lead change, and design
innovative practices (Hebda & Calderone, 2010). However, all
these are achievable through
having knowledge of the nine Essentials that delineate the skills
and understanding necessary for
all nurses prepared in master’s nursing program. In any
healthcare setting, these essentials act as
a guide for preparing graduates for various areas of practice.
5. One of the essential that I find essential for all masters-
prepared nurses is the
organization and system leadership, which is Essential II. Many
nurses are leaders in their
communities, families, and in their workstations (Quality and
Safety Education for Nurses,
2010). Nurses require strong leadership skills to take good care
of patients on a daily basis. In
fact, they require diligent observation skills, dedication, good
management skills, and
guaranteeing excellence. Strong nursing leadership assists in
encouraging other nurses to work
together, but it requires strong interpersonal skills to guarantee
success (In Blair & In Mirr,
2015). The Essential II is important since it allows for smooth
communication between doctors
and other staffs, patient’s families, and patients. According to
Porter-O’Grady and Malloch
(2009), “The Essential II helps in making informed ethical and
critical decisions that promote
high quality and safe patient care.” Through good leadership,
working relationships also improve
while eliminating health disparities and promoting excellence in
practice.

ORGANIZATIONAL AND SYSTEMS LEADERSHIP 2
The essentials of Masters Education in Nursing are imperative
in ensuring that
professionals in the healthcare industry provide holistic,
transformative and evolutional services.
Advancement in technology leads into a dynamic healthcare
world which requires nurses to be
well equipped. Organizational and systems leadership is an
essential which recognizes the fact
that leadership is integral in both healthcare systems and their
organizations. The existence of
holistic and quality healthcare coupled with safe practice is
pegged on the successful application
of organizational and systems leadership. Nurses who apply
leadership skills make better
decisions, foster a good working environment within the
8. organization, ensure that all individuals
follow set ethical standards and engage in operations which are
in line with the systems-
perspective (American Association of College of Nursing,
2011).
Organizational and systems leadership entail those qualities
within an individual which
improve interactions with other healthcare practitioners. These
skills include good
communication. This essential ensures that a nurse
communicates effectively with other team
members. The success of good communication skills in
leadership is shown by positive feedback
and improved productivity. Motivating other team members is
key in ensuring that the delegated
responsibilities are done effectively. The essential also ensures
that the nurse understands all the
key components of the healthcare system. As such the nurse
applies his/her competencies in
ensuring ethical practice within the field or within the
organization. Leadership skills also ensure
application of favorable decision-making within the
organization. Safe patient care is inhibited
by absence of leadership skills. While considering this it is vital
9. to ensure that a nurse is
equipped with all the required leadership skills. Organizational
and systems leadership
complements other essentials since it acts as the glue which
holds all functions within provision
of better healthcare (American Association of College of
Nursing, 2011).
