Specifically, the nurse leader will acquire the ability to facilitate change, advance a culture of
excellence, promote lifelong learning for self and others, foster collaborative multi–disciplinary care
teams, design advanced nursing practices, assimilate services across the healthcare organization, and
implement evidence into practice (AACN, 2011). These leadership skills are learned and
demonstrated through AACN's (2011) following nine essentials during master's–level nursing
education.
Essential I: Background for Practice from Sciences and Humanities – Requires that the master's–

Jean Watson 's Theory Of Caring
According to McEwen and Wills (2011), science is being interested with cause and effect. Jean
Watson's caring science, as a sacred science, is the philosophy with which I identify the closest. My
personal philosophy of nursing practice is entirely founded on caring for others. Incorporated in that
caring is applying the information and evidence based practice to provide the best care possible.
Within my philosophy also encompasses doing what is ethically right. Whether caring for others in
leadership or patients, nurses have the ability to establish valuable relationships that develop trust
and foster an ability to be caring and compassionate (Carroll, 2015). Although my nursing
administrator experience is just beginning to bloom, my experience as a clinical coordinator and
nurse liaison has helped me in shaping my philosophy and framework. Jean Watson's theory of
caring is well–defined as a discipline which incorporates human caring with the art human caring.
These features are used by nurses and administrators everyday throughout their career (McEwen &
Wills, 2011). Jean Watson's theories are defined as human, health, and nursing. Jeans theory of
caring encompasses human science, orientation, humanitarianism, proficiencies, and in patient care.
Her beliefs were of healthcare professionals who make social, scientific, and moral contributions to
mankind through human growth, which is important in the shifting healthcare of the 21st century

Today's organizations face ever–increasing change, which includes increased patient demands and
work needs, which requires a more adaptive flexible leadership that is becoming increasingly
important in the 21st century. Leadership theory and philosophy can be divided into several well–
known styles. Within this paper, we will discuss the basis of autocratic, democratic, laissez faire,
servant, charismatic, transformational, and situational styles of leadership within the nursing
profession, then conclude the writer's personal philosophies of leadership.
To begin, autocratic leadership involves leaders to make decisions without input from their
followers (Frandsen, 2014). This style of leadership also incorporates negative reinforcement.
Maboko (2011) gathered that nurse managers who embodied an autocratic leadership style yield
registered nurses to feel unappreciated, criticized and blamed. On the other hand, a democratic

My nursing journey began after my aunt was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2001. Within months
the cancer had metastasized throughout her body. I felt helpless as I watched her health begin to
decline. Before she became ill, she had pursued a career as a school teacher. At her funeral, I

evaluate, and improve their knowledge base.
I was able to demonstrate creative problem solving by completing a root cause analysis in my
department. The root cause analysis identified a safety concern within the department and I was able
to implement a change. I discovered there was an increasing incidence of catheter associated urinary
tract infections in the hospital within the last year that was posing a great safety concern. There were
42 confirmed cases within the hospital, 21 of those cases were suspected to have originated from the
Emergency Department where I work. There were guidelines implemented to help decrease the
number of catheter associated infections as a result. A catheter check off sheet was completed on
every urinary catheter insertion and verified by the charge nurse. A urine culture was obtained upon
insertion to determine if the infection was preexisting or caused by the catheter. Also, nurses were
accustomed to placing catheters for convenience instead of medical necessity. We are no longer
allowed to place a catheter unless there is a medical reason requiring one. As a result, there has been

Identify dates for accomplishing each goal. Setting goals is what drives people to growth and change
within themselves. If one fails to dream and sets goals, it is unlikely the will grow or change (Scott,
2014). Allowing myself to set goals is a personal commitment and a drive to make change.

Florence Nightingale. I was in middle school, and intrigued at her courage, and dedication to care
for the sick. As I entered college, and into a formal nursing education program, I still viewed nursing
as, the care provided to another in need. Without my knowing, I was developing a philosophy of
nursing for myself. As the years passed, I began to realize that nursing encompassed much more
than caring for the sick. I began to learn that nursing, as discipline, had much more responsibility.
According to the International Council of Nurses, "Nursing encompasses autonomous and
collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in
all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill,
disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in
shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management, and education are also key

ADPIE stands for assessment, diagnosis, patient plan, implementation and evaluation of the
implementations. It was a very structured approach that has to be completed in the SBAR or ADPIE
format. It had to be done in order and each area had to be completed. There was no creative
approach allowed. Spiritualty was never part of any aspect of the process. There were times when as
a student, I did the SBAR or ADPIE format and I would be marked down for adding information
that was not on the checklist or if I left out a portion of a particular section. For example, if the
patient did not have chest tubes and I did not state the patient had no tubes, I was marked down. If I
added the patients spiritual needs in the format it would be crossed out because it did not fit the
checklist. The nursing approach that was used in our program was based on theory we learned in
lecture. We wrote care plans that included an assessment, structural variables, nursing diagnosis,
goals, nursing interventions and evaluations. We were marked down if the interventions didn't match
the nursing diagnosis or if there was insufficient assessments made to come up with a nursing
diagnosis or goal. There was no delegation or leadership involved with our approach. It was
structured and specific with little ability to vary from a nursing care approach that was taught.

style I identified with, at that time, was the democratic style. I had chosen this style of leadership
because of the teamwork, constructive criticism, motivation, good communication, dedication, and
good attitude attributes of the democratic style. Four years later, being present time, I have learned
and experienced a great deal more about leadership styles. I now think I identify with a mixture of

The field of nursing is as difficult as it is vast. So it is reasonable to believe it takes a special calling
to become a nurse. Every nurse has their own beliefs, ideology, bias, skillset and work ethic. It is
through these personal understandings that a nursing philosophy is fashioned. Regardless if a nurse
is motivated in the purity of her patients, or is bittered by the nonsense of humanity, he or she has a
personal nursing philosophy. A personal nursing philosophy, takes into account the nurse's biases,
morals, and goals. It should have an interdisciplinary approach and patient–oriented goals. A
personal philosophy will grow with the nurse as they develop in their profession and have new
experiences. A nursing philosophy is grounded in personal knowledge, critical thinking, technical,
interpersonal, articulation, leadership and policy and advocacy skills. These skills must constantly
be developed or refined (Kearney–Nunnery, 2016).
Some popular nursing philosophies include the self–care theory envisioned by Dorothea e. Orem.

Throughout this paper I will discuss what I believe nursing is and my philosophy of providing care.
Nursing is a world full of complexity whose future lies within human compassion, and this paper
will discuss the importance of that. My personal philosophy of nursing is viewed in an abstract
perspective, where I believe nursing is a balance between science and art. With nurses as painters, I
will discuss how we interact with our canvas, the environment. Afterwards, I will take you to
discover the importance of keeping our artistic supply, health, in equilibrium to provide care to
others. But, every artist needs inspiration, so I will discuss how people stand as our growing ground.
Once the basics of the painter, the canvas, the artistic supplies, and inspiration have been brought to

and exploring new paths in achieving that change. Innovation is being courageously defiant in the
