Evaluation Question 2
1. Question 2 - How effective is the
combination of your main product
and ancillary texts?
2. Colours
From the start of our production I knew that I wanted there to be a
clear link between the tasks. The main way to do this was to have a
clear colour link. From my research I understood that the colours I
needed to use need to be dark, such as greys, blacks and reds,
symbolising death and danger. Throughout the products the main
colours I have used are black and red. I used these to create the
look of the genre and the feel of our music video. These colours are
conventions of the genre and are critical to making our tasks a
success. By using a colour link it allows the audience to relate to all
the products, but also view the product as a whole rather than just
separate tasks. Here is an example of the colour link…
3. Star Image
Another major link between our texts is the star image. From the start
of my research I understood that this was a key factor that I needed to
incorporate into my products. This is due to Goodwin’s Start Image
theory. Due to this research, whilst planning I developed an idea that
all the texts would be based around Jacob and his guilty image. He is
the main focus in the music video and the ancillary tasks. I developed
this focus on Jacob by using many close ups of him from various
different angles. These shots I gained knowledge of from my research.
The star image allowed the products to link together successfully so
that the audience can see the link. This also engages the audience to
the whole product rather than just the separate tasks: which is what
Goodwin’s theory suggests. Here is an example of the Star image link…
4. Imagery
Throughout the main product and the ancillary tasks there is a
combination of imagery used that allows a link to be created. Due to
the lyrics and nature of our track we decided that we wanted to
create an antichrist video symbolising death and guilt. This allowed
me to make the link across all the products as we could use specific
pictures to make this look such as skulls and crosses. This link allows
the audience to engage with the “product” rather than just the
products separately. Here is an example of the imagery links all our
tasks together….
5. Record Label
Across my media products, I have created a link via the Record
Label. From my research I discovered that the most popular record
label for my genre was Roadrunner Records. They have bands such
as Slipknot signed under their label. Due to this I chose to use them
as my record label. Across the ancillary task I put on the roadrunner
label. However, I haven’t put it on the music video as I didn’t know
where to put it. This means that the link is weakened, however it
isn’t essential. Here is the example of the Record Label…
6. Fonts
Through the process of research I noticed that the fonts were the
same from the bands website to their digipak, for example, system
of a down’s latest album. This creates a link between the products
allowing the audience to engage in the whole product rather than
just the one platform. Due to this I chose to have the font the same
on the website and one the digipak. Much like bands I researched,
this allows my product to be seen as a whole item rather than just
separate products thus making it more successful. Here is the font
link…
7. Costumes
Furthermore, across the texts we have kept Jacob
in the same clothes that are conventional to my
genre. Jacob wears in all my products Black jeans
and a black top. These all link across the products
creating an apparent link. However, this is
something that I didn’t see massively in my
research.
8. Overall
In my opinion, I think that the combination of my
main text and ancillary texts is highly effective as
there is a clear link between them allowing it to be
seen as a whole product rather than just separate
tasks.
