2. Chick flicks tend to be set in suburban areas.
Bedrooms and houses are key locations as well as
schools.
There is often heavy use of high key lighting.
The costume always tends to be very ‘fashion
forward’. Props and costume are usually a direct
mirror of the characters personality.
Characters tend to be very over animated.
What do I know?
3. We plan to dress our
characters in a way which is
‘fashion forward’ connoting
idealised ideas of youth
Our ‘popular girls’ will be
dressed in darker colours in
order to highlight that
they’re cruel characters
We will make sure all our
characters (excluding
Jonathan, the lead male)
will be dressed femininely
to exacerbate the ‘chick
flick’ genre.
Costume and Props
Our lead male Jonathan will be
wearing glasses to highlight his
‘nerdy’ persona
Our female characters will be shot
with shopping bags and mobile
phones to satirise young females
4. We will use a bedroom set to show Abbie and Jonathan’s
conversation to remind the audience that the characters are
still young
Much of our film will be set outside in parks and shopping malls
in order to again exacerbate the fact that our characters are
young and care free
Location
5. We intend to use high key lighting throughout. The
effect of this is that it should lighten the mood of the
film and will be one of the key features which create a
light hearted and up beat mood as conventional of
the genre.
Lighting
6. Chick Flicks and renowned for
having ‘over-animated’
characters
We don’t wish to make our
characters too dramatic as this
could come across as very fake
and cheesy
In saying this, we intend for our
characters to exaggerate their
actions often through the use of
‘hair flicks’ and both facial and
hand gestures
Behaviour and Actions
7. Overall we intend to use lots of genre conventions in
reflection to the mise en scene for our film. The
reasoning for this is that mise en scene is at the very
core of any genre. Where cinematography, editing
and sound can be followed more loosely, it’s
imperative that mise en scene is nailed down in order
to reflect the themes and messages of a chick flick.
