Audience profiling
1. Audience profiling
(Deadpool) Mainstream– Mainstreaminotherformsof mediathatisoftendefined bywidely-
acceptedandcurrently popularstandards,trends,andhypesthathave beenestablishedbythe
media.Withmainstreamyou’re appealingtothe masses,it’swhatcurrentlysell the mostandgain
the most popularity.Deadpool wasbroughttothe mainstreamwhenitfirstpremieredasitwasthe
firsteverRatedR superheromovie reachreceivedrave reviewstargetingnotonlyjustcomic
audience butattractinga more worldwide audience.Evenpeople whodon’tnecessarilyknow about
Deadpool butwenttosee it because theylikedthe actorRyan Reynoldswhoportraysanaccurate
versionof Deadpool.Deadpool is amarvel superhero directedbyTimMillerandwrittenbyRhett
Reese andPaul Wernick.Deadpool was acommercial success,grossingover$783 millionworldwide
and breakingnumerousbox-office records,becomingthe ninthhighest-grossingfilmof 2016, the
highest-grossingR-ratedfilmof all time.Reasonbeingisbecause Deadpool wasfilledwithalotof
action,romance comedy,makingthe filmenjoyableforanyone togosee.
(Deadpool) Alternative – Mediathat isdifferentfromotherestablishedordominanttype’s mediain
termsof theircontent,production,ordistribution. Alternative mediatake manyformsincluding
print,audio,video,Internetandstreetart. Insimple termsit’s“non-mainstream”. The one’sthat
had watchDeadpool were notreallyanaudience thatwouldconsiderthemselvesthe “alternative”
audience.Itwasmore lesspeople whoare comicfansof the filmandwantedagood actionmovie to
watch. The filmDeadpool itself wasn’treallytargetedtothatparticularaudience asthattype of
audience are more intoindie films.
(Deadpool) Niche – A specifictype of audience butverycomplex becausethe mediaproducerhasto
target a specificaudience andconducta type of research. Deadpool wouldn’ttargetthisaudience
because of howdifficultitwouldbe toplease thattype of audience. Deadpool hasabiggermarket
as it appealsthe masses, aniche audience wouldhave acertain style thatseparatesitselffromother
mediaproductsincludingfilm.
(Django) Mainstream – DjangoUnchainedisa Americanwesternfilmwrittenanddirectedby
QuentinTarantino,Setinthe oldwestandAntebellumsouth.QuentinTarantinoisknownasa
controversial Directorassome of hisfilmshave gratuitousviolencewhichwoulddeemunnecessary
and toomuch for some viewers.Anotherreasonisbecause some of hismoviestackle sensitive
topics.Djangobeingone of them, as ittackles SlaveryinAmericawhichwasone of the darkesttimes
for blackpeople.Thistype of filmwouldappeal tothe massesnotjustbecause of the directoror
studiomakingthe film, itwouldappeal because ittouchesatopicthat isstill relevantintoday’s
society. The twistinthatis thoughittouchesa sensitive subjectthere isfictionalisestorywithinthe
film. Some of the biggestnamesinHollywoodfeatureinthe filmwhichwouldappeal toawider
audience, thusmakingthe filmmore of amainstreamoutlet. The targetaudience the filmisgoing
wouldbe all gendersyoungtooldwholike western,slaveryandactionfilms.
(Django) Alternative – AlthoughDjangoisa mainstreamfilm, because of the style inwhichthe film
ismade an Alternative audience wouldappreciate.Thisisbecause QuentinTarantinohassucha
worldwide fanbase thatevensome people whowouldn’tnecessarilywatchafilmthat’smainstream
but wouldwatcha filmlike Django.
(Django) Niche – A smalleraudiencewith interestof aspecificandprobablynotsopopulargenre,
thistype of audience wouldn’tbe atargetaudience forDjango.Toappeal to a Niche audience, the
filmwouldhave tobe made ina certainwayand fita certainstyle a Niche audience wouldexpect.
2. Djangowasn’tIntendedforaniche audience,that’snottosay it can’tappeal but a Niche audience
wouldexpectsomethingdifferentcomparedtowhatDjangooffers.
HypodermicNeedle model – alsoknownas the hypodermic-syringe model,transmission-beltmodel,
or magic bullettheory.A model of communicationssuggestingthatanintendedmessage isdirectly
receivedandsolelyacceptedbythe receiver.The hypodermicneedlemodel suggestthatmedia
messagesisinjectedstraightintoapassive audiencewhichisimmediatelyinfluencedbythe
message.Thiswasbasedfromearly observations of the effect of mass media, as usedby Nazi
propagandaand the effectsof Hollywood inthe 1930s and 1940s. For example, withthe increase of
popularizedmedia(radio,Television,smartphones) itcontributestothe factthat people canget
informationinamatterof seconds,whichmeansanoverflood of messagesthatwill potentiallystick
withthe receiver.
Passive or Active Consumption – Active consumptioniswhenthe audience will engageanddiscuss
mediamessagesthatcomesacrossto themand some timesquestionmediamessagesthroughlife
experiences.Passiveconsumptioniswhenthe audience doesn’tengage orquestionthe media
message butjustacceptsit. A good example of thisiswhenthe classhadto watch Django, that
wouldbe consideredasactive consumptionaswe watcheditforeducational purpose.Whereas
people whowatchedoutsideof collegeare consideredpassive consumption.
Censorship- is the suppressionof free speech, publiccommunicationorotherinformationwhich
may be consideredobjectionable,harmful,sensitive, politicallyincorrectorinconvenientas
determinedbygovernments, mediaoutlets,authoritiesorothergroupsor institutions.
ReceptionTheory – Receptiontheoryiswhenproducersordirectorsconstructsa textencodedwith
hiddenmessage ormeaningthatthe producersordirectorswantto conveyacrossto the audience.
Thisleadsto fantheoriesandalsorelatestopassive oractive consumption.Anactive audience will
be able to pickup the meaningor messagesstraightaway, butthe audience will needtobe
remindedof the message throughoutthe filmwhichcanbe done invariouswayslike character
dialogue oractionswithinthe film.Anexampleof thisisa filmcalledInception a 2010 science
fiction film. The filmstars LeonardoDiCaprio asa professional thief whostealsinformation by
infiltratingthe subconscious, andisofferedachance to have hiscriminal historyerasedaspayment
for a seeminglyimpossibletask:"inception",the implantationof anotherperson'sideaintoa
target'ssubconscious. The directorChristopherNolanpurposelylefthiddenmessagesandmeanings
whichcauseda lotof fan theoriesandopenendedquestions.
