Latinx History
History combined with an enhanced learning environment serve a strong purpose in helping us
understand the past for the approach of a better future. Throughout the semester, students were
encouraged to critically examine momentous events and time periods in Latinx history (which is
commonly overlooked in the U.S.) to assess the importance each of these different components, and
how they contribute to the generalized American history we are taught today. While comparing our
semester research project and our initial reading of Vicki L. Ruiz's Nuestra America, I found they
both compliment each other as they each highlight challenges in Latinx history since the 1500s until
present day. Through our individual research along with class discussions/lectures, ... Show more

This serves as major importance in a time where there are continuous misperceived notions that
sometimes restricts our society from progression due to a lack of understanding, ineffective delivery
of information, or unfortunately complete ignorance. Based on the challenges and contributions our
research subjects dealt with, I would like to pose two general questions that will hopefully spark an
engaging class–wide discussion and reflection: Through the course of our semester, we have
discussed various concepts that has redefined Latinx history and what it specifically means to be
Latinx – With that said, what changes can be listed altogether that has significantly impacted the
Latinx community since the Civil Rights movement? More importantly (with the knowledge of this
particular era and previous time periods in mind from both our course and collective book), what
struggles has continued to remain constant for the community and where is there room for growth
for Latinx history?(*) Also, Ruiz depicts the need to recognize the struggles of Latinx women
overpowering the strong machismo idealities set in place at the time. Considering a discussion in
class regarding Luisa Moreno, a majority of the class identified Moreno as a "deadbeat mom" which

History 302 Reflection
Theory and history I always thought never go together and when it was required for me to take
History 302 I was very confused why it was a theory class. At the start and throughout the class it
was a struggle to keep up what it meant to look at history through a Marxist, cultural, or social lens
and how that had anything to do with theory. The class was a struggle but not impossible as each
article or monograph that were given out for readings provided insight of what these lens were
meant to do. Even though I have taken upper division classes at CSULA and studied historiography,
history 302 provided me with a new perspective on how history progressed through time. This
course brought me a variety of different viewpoints that I did not see ... Show more content on

Marxist lens allowed me to change my grand narrative view of history and be able to see the
struggle between two parties and how that was rooted in many monographs and lectures. When we
were discussing about Marxist and Marxism I connected more closely with that than the other lens
that was taught later in the year. I always saw the struggle between two parties as the root in every
history and monographs but always assumed that it was how history was researched and taught. It
slightly changed my perspective as I now know that my lens was not grand narrative but more of a
Marxist. This allowed my progression as a history student to be able to look at monographs and be
able to figure out the viewpoint the historian is trying to establish to the readers. I had the most
difficult time with Foucault and his social theory as it was hard to separate what I believed was
economic when it was social. Eric Avila and his cultural theory was a bit easier for me as I felt more
comfortable with cultural theory compared to social theory. This class provided me with different
monographs based on each theory that has strengthened my skills with writing and critical analyze

Public History
Danielle Sherrard
Introduction to Public History
Ever since public history emerged on college universities in the 1980s, historians have still had
difficulties defining the term. The National Council on Public History's definition of the term stirred
the debate even more. According to the National Council on Public History, "public history
describes the many and diverse ways in which history is put to work in the world" (NCPH 2016).
This definition helps the public understand that public history focuses around real world issues in an
applicable way. Public history is performed outside of the traditional research–based college
campuses, whether it be in a museum, archive, National Park Service, and more. Public history

Public Historians use such tools as photographs, oral histories, museum exhibitions, and multimedia
to address a wide variety of historical issues and to present those issues to a non–academic audience.
As historians, we all do research, we all analyze and interpret our findings, and we all communicate
the results. The primary difference between public and academic history is in the area of
communication––in the audiences that we attempt to reach and in the products that we use to convey
our scholarship to those audiences. an interactive process between the historian, the public, and the

about their day–to–day lives.
Public history is performed outside of the traditional research–based college campuses, whether it be

shared authority – history is for everyone, not only for discussion by academics and public
historians should be the intermediary between history and the public. No one owns

The Importance of History Essay
What is history? Should we study history? Who creates history? Is history relevant?
The definition of history, is a question which has sparked international debate for centuries between
the writers, readers, and the makers of history. It is a vital topic which should be relevant in our lives
because it?s important to acknowledge past events that have occurred in our world that deeply
influences the present. This essay will discuss what history is, and why we study it.
History is the study of past events leading up to the present day. It is a research, a narrative, or an
account of past events and developments that are commonly related to a person, an institution, or a
place. It is a branch of knowledge that records and analyzes ... Show more content on

Focusing on the people involved in a time, place, and series of events makes history. Biographies
and historical fiction may popularize these entities/figures with descriptions of people who lived in
the past or events that happened in the past. Such Historical figures and events include King
Leopold II of Belgium and The Scramble of Africa in the late 19th century. Among other things,
King Leopold II of Belgium (1835–1909), is known for the exploitation of Congo and the mass
murder of its citizens as told in King Leopold?s Ghost by Adam Hochschild. King Leopold II of
Belgium, created and ironically erased history by ultimately slashing the area's population by ten
million during his reign in the Congo, and still managed to shrewdly foster a reputation as a great
humanitarian. In telling this story, Hochschild gave detailed descriptions, especially of the
individuals involved, both good and bad. Set in the palaces and boardrooms of Europe and in the
villages of central Africa, it tells the story of the tragedy that took place during Leopold's so called
rule. This ?horror? story gives and reveals the utter most secrets of the respected King Leopold.
Prior to his colonization, In the mid–1870s, the King hired then world renowned explorer Henry
Morton Stanley, who was familiar with many parts of Africa, to help him go about conquering.

History : A New Form Of History
Doing History Essay:
Up until the early nineteenth–century, history had been written in two dominant traditions, "one
predominantly learned and antiquarian, the other essentially literary". However, a postmodern shift
in historiography has led to a new form of history, namely 'disobedient histories'. 'Disobedient
history' as a new form of history moves away from Leopold Von Ranke's ideas of history being a
rigorous scientific inquiry towards a more diverse and cultured form. Some of these forms include
graphic novels, photo journals, dramatised series of events or blog posts. My output was the latter,
my blog post was designed to analyse literary and artistic form of memory in the Holocaust, and the
problems the forms present. By choosing the medium of a blog post I aimed to challenge traditional
academic rules, to use a medium that would serve to democratise history for the modern era, and
also to create conversation with the wider socio cultural scene; with the argument also pertaining to
'disobedient history' as a recognisable form of history method and writing.
As expected, the blog that has been created is not a traditional academic form of historical writing;
however, new works in the field of historical writing may argue differently. In the traditional
orthodox view of history, there has been a refusal to consider historical narratives as a manifestation
of 'verbal fictions'. As Hayden White describes "verbal fictions, the contents of which are as much
invented as

The Social History Of Medicine
Earlier issues of SHM include articles that are profoundly insistent upon the importance of 'history
from below' in developing and constituting understandings of health and medicine. As these articles
were primarily structured and written during the cultural and linguistic turn in historical analysis it is
clear that they present arguments that aim to revise modernist approaches to the social history of
medicine. Most of which are interested in the history of published medical texts or the views of the
medical elite. The article by Liora Navon, 'Beggars, Metaphors, and Stigma: A Missing Link in the
Social History of Leprosy' outlines the need for the adoption of a 'history from below' perspective in
addressing understandings of leprosy in Thailand. Her article states that 'the interviews conducted
for this study with patients diagnosed before the 1950s and their offspring reveal that, unlike their
portrayal in archival sources, manifestations of extremely negative or positive attitudes were quite
rare.' Similarly Peter Elmer's review of Medicine and the Market in England and Its Colonies,
c.1450–c. 1850, by Mark S. R. Jenner and Patrick Wallis argues that their work attributes a link
between the creation of a medical marketplace with a 'reorientation towards the role of the patient in
medical transactions'. Found even within the title of the article 'Speed in the Third Reich:
Metamphetamine (Pervitin) Use and a Drug History From Below' by Stephen Snelders and Toine

History And History: The Past And The Past?
Language is a complex and complicated system of symbols and sounds which occasionally becomes
the source of misunderstandings. Most of the time, there are certain words that hold various
meanings. One very specific example of which is the word History. History can be defined in
numerous ways, such as the past and the study concerning the past. Whilst both definitions sound
the same, there is a clear distinction between the two.
The main difference between them is that history expressed as the past refers to the entire series of
events that took place before a given point in time, while history as the study of the past is the
branch of knowledge that deals with past events.
The past involves everything that has occurred since the beginning of time – every human being's
thoughts and actions, every plant that grows in the forest, every physical and chemical
transformation, and more since the dawn of time.
In contrast to that, History as a study tackles the interpretation of records left over from the past. It is
the process of deciphering evidence in a thoughtful and informed manner which is used to inquire

dead culture may have contributed to the rich traditions that certain tribes possess today. Thus,
history provides insights into cultures of origin and as well as the cultures that most are not familiar
with, thereby increasing cultural awareness. Moreover, the lifeless men whose corpses are most
likely 20–feet below the ground may have been teachers who imparted knowledge, soldiers who
died fighting for freedom, doctors saving millions of ailing patients, or may even be the first men
who roamed around the earth. Knowing history provides identity in which evidences reveal how
families, groups and institutions came to

History And History By James A. Baldwin
"People are trapped in history and history is trapped in them." James A. Baldwin
The study of history not only provides information about the past, but gives people knowledge and
details that help shape lives, in the present and future. For the longest time it has been said that
history is bound to repeat itself if it is not understood. Although the repetition of previous tragic
historical events is an important reason to study the past, there are many others. As American
playwright James Baldwin said, people are a part of history, but history is just as much part of them.
This is one of the more fundamental reasons why the exploration of the past is vital to human
beings. The study of history gives humans a sense of belonging, a feeling that ... Show more content

Without a knowledge of history how would someone know that the tradition of having a Christmas
tree is thought to come from Pagans in Germany. Or that Christianity dates back to the 1st. century
A.D. Many people do not believe that learning these things is useful, that knowing where traditions
and beliefs come from is useless. Henry Ford famously said "History is bunk". This could not be
more wrong. Humans want to know why they do things, and looking into the past gives us these
answers. Although is has been said time and time again that history will repeat itself, many people
still do not know the full effect it could have. It is very unlikely to know that communism does not
work in large numbers without studying where it began, and that it did not work. One to the simplest
ways to solve problems is to find out where they began, and studying history provides information

History In The Waterland
Waterland is a form of postmodern fiction, which reflects on story–telling, combining both fictive
and historical narration (Atilla, 1). The protagonist, Tom Crick, who is also the narrator of the
stories, is a history teacher that spends his life trying to discover the mysteries from his past. In the
present, he is dismissed from his job, because the school considers history to have little value in the
modern world. In one of his last classes, Tom turned his lessons into story–telling sessions, by
starting with stories about his personal life and incorporating at the same time his family history and
the French Revolution, with the idea to show the meaning of history. While telling the stories, he
also questions why we tell stories, how are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is questioning the meaning and the relevance of historical events. Price wishes to live in the
'Here and Now' and embodies all the objections to history and essentially Crick's stories. However,
according to Tom Crick, the past is necessary in order to make meaning of the present. Through
analyzing his own past, Tom Crick is trying to show Price that history is in fact relevant. In forming
his past into a narrative and by using knowledge that perhaps was previously unavailable, the
historian discovers what has been forgotten about the past and brings all the pieces together. Private
or public, histories brings together all the amount of data, categories and concepts to form
themselves into a narrative (Atilla, 4 ). As Linda Hutcheon specifies, in historiographic metafiction
the characters are often seen trying to analyze the data that they have collected. Usually, postmodern
fiction uses historical data, which it assimilates in order to lend a feeling of verifiability. However,
historiographical metafiction incorporates, but rarely assimilates such data. It plays upon the truth
and lies of the historical record, in order to foreground the possible failures of recorded history

One thing is they do not care anymore and they are not interested to know. They already lack the
interest to know more about their country's history because they fail to understand what the real
essence of learning about history is. Probably because their teachers during their elementary and
high school days just taught them about memorizing the facts that just includes all of the dates of
historical events and names of heroes and leaders. That is why, they do not get any value from this
kind of learning. Therefore, in order to let others appreciate about the history of their country, it
should first be taught to them in a right way. It should be inculcated from the very start that what
you learn from history is what you will have to learn later about the society and the people around
you. People should first understand that history is not just all about facts. It is about why life
happened and why we share the same value and tradition. These insights should let them realized

future. At least, when we have a firm knowledge of what our history is, we will be able to have a

History Argument Essay
According to brainy quotes, David McCullough an american author and historian once said,
"History is a guide to navigation in perilous times. History is who we are and why we are the way
we are" ("History Quotes"). David Mccullough is saying that history is about us, it's a part of
everyone, it's a part of who we are. Howard Zinn says that history is about the future it's about us.
Though some might see that his interpretations are saying that our history doesn't matter and isn't
about us today. Because Zinn reveals that we need to see all sides of history because it is about our
future, which evokes the idea that history is about us today. Zinn shows that we need to see all sides
of history because it is about future, which reveals that history is about us today. Zinn writes in his
book, "I am supposing, or perhaps only hoping, that our future may be found in the past's fugitive
moments of compassion rather than in its solid centuries of warfare" (Zinn 8). He is saying that our
"future" is found in the past, it's engraved in our history. That once we actually find out the whole
story it can help us in our future, which our future ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Zinn writes in his story, "Yes, mass murder took place, but it's not important––it should weigh very
little in our final judgments; it should affect very little what we do in the world" (Zinn 6). In this
quote some people may think that Zinn is saying that what happened in the past doesn't and should
"weigh" in our "final judgments". They think he is saying that the past doesn't matter, which reveals
the counterclaim that history isn't about us today. That is doesn't matter and should affect us today.
Though seen all throughout the world it is obviously seen that history is about us today, history is all
around it part of who we are. Some might think that history is not about us today, but they are wrong
to think that because it is about us

In all my years as a student, I've always been told how important it is to learn about history. History
gives us insight to important people and events, and helps us move forward as a society. But what
happens when we don't teach all of history? What do we get when students learned about the rise of
fall of the Roman empire for months on end, but they don't learn about the Egyptian kings and
queens? What happens when we talk about our founding fathers that established our nation, but not
the people it was stolen from or the slaves who built it after? When we learn about the inventions,
innovations, and explorations of Europeans and their descendants all throughout the year from

History: What Is The Purpose Of History?
I know that you were never one concerned by history, because you felt it was not relevant to you,
that it was boring and maybe it was even inaccurate. However, in my studies I have found quite the
opposite. History is more than dates or names, history is us. It is why and how, it is the thoughts and
motivations of people long gone but whose struggles are able to resonate within us.
There is no single history, no matter what text you read, what you remember you will never have a
comprehensive account of what happened. As a society of individuals we have our own thoughts,
motivations and experiences which make different people. So the purpose of history is not about
what happened, but what can be proven. (Arnold ¶1–3) History explains that in 1856, James
Buchanan was elected president but it is not able to comprehend the reason every voter put

Integrity, honesty and sharing credit are integral to the field. Evidence, whether primary or
secondary sources, must come from that which prove to be legitimate. (AHA ¶4,6,8) One cannot
say, for example, that the ancient Egyptians worshipped cats based upon drawings found on a vase
which has no known origins. Yet a historian can theorize this and, with the help of others possibly,
find old paintings or writings which would support such a theory. That is what I think is the fun part
of studying history, the joy in finding and touching things from centuries ago. Can you imagine
mother holding such a thing and trying to envision the life of the person it once belonged to? Were
they a king, or maybe a thief? Did they have children they loved or did they live alone in a hut?

Why should our elementary school children study history?
There is no doubt that the primary purpose of schooling is to prepare students to function effectively
in the world, and thereby to assist society to function effectively as well. We study the past in school
not because students need to know a collection of old facts, but because history helps them
understand how the world works and how human beings behave. Knowledge of the past is required
for understanding present realities. When people share some common knowledge of history, they
can discuss their understandings with one another.

Daniel Little History
History by definition is the study of past events particularly in human affairs, where Historiography,
its associated domain, is defined as the study of historical writing and perspective. In terms of my
historic philosophy, history itself is the study of the past and the application of lessons learned by
our ancestors in the present day, a vessel for the knowledge that has been handed down through
generations. History allows us to establish perspective on our own lives and how our way of life
came to be. Thus, it must be written and observed with an objective and unbiased lens, because
establishing a valid historical perspective of the accounts and stories recounted by either side of any

One might approach this with the mimicry of an already proven theory of historiographical analysis.
Author and social science philosopher Daniel Little offers his theory on how to conduct a full
historiographic scan in a blog post titled, "Historiography and the philosophy of history". In which
he states: "Historians normally make truth claims, and they ask us to accept those claims based on
the reasoning they present. So a major aspect of the study of historiography has to do with defining
the ideas of evidence, rigor, and standards of reasoning for historical inquiry." (Little) Little initially
states that the goal of an analysis is to understand and outline any truths. In order to do this, he adds
that one must make their own decisions on how defining and observe the evidence given and that it
is the historian's burden to prove any of his inquiries. When looking at a specific event in history is
important to use all three of these steps in order to create an adequate analysis. For example, when
looking at the Partitions of Poland from 1772 – 1795 a historical perspective must first be
established with regard to any applicable historiographical schools. The partitions were the actions
taken by three main Eastern European powers, Austria, Prussia and Russia, in carving up their
common enemy, The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Politically this move makes sense, by all
parties and on the micro scale, further analysis could be done into how this event impacted the city

History Quote Analysis
History is events that happened in the past to impact the world. Anyone can make history, but the
events of that history have no impact unless one writes the history down. The quote "Any fool can
make history, but it takes a genius to write it" explains how history is truly made. The quote means
that any person, no matter how uneducated they are can make history, but it takes a highly educated
person to make history and make the event known. Anyone can make history because history is the
events that happened. For example, one can make history by eating an apple, but that won't be
known because eating an apple isn't a significant event to the world. When one eats an apple, it's an
event that has happened, but it isn't a very great event to other ... Show more content on

History also helps prepare one to face the future, so one does not repeat the same mistakes. The
quote "History cannot give us a program for the future, but it can give us a fuller understanding of
ourselves and of our common humanity, so that we can better face the future" explains that history is
not something one can program and plan out. History is information of events of what happened
such as, how one's background and places came to be, so one does not have to question life and the
world. History also helps one by revealing important information that can be used to help improve
the future. For example, 9/11 was a terrible event that had happened in 2001. People use that piece
of information and make a better future. After the event, the security of airports and the military was
improved drastically to prevent the mistakes from happening again. If the same mistake were to
happened again, money and time would be wasted to recover the damages and many people will
lose their lives. The quote means one cannot program and plan out history for the future, but history

History And Its Impact On History
In taking a peak at a current history lesson taught in a classroom, the common outsider will likely
find nothing wrong with its content or presentation. They hear many famous names and key dates of
the famous people and events of the past and do not bat an eyelash because they learned history in
the same way. On the other hand, if a historian were to walk into that same classroom, they would
be incredibly disappointed by the fact that students are not really learning how to practice history.
Granted, they probably learned about history in the same way at one point or another during their
educational careers, but that was in the past and this is the current day. As science, technology, and
other subjects advance, why is the general public resolved to allow history to remain in the past? Is
it not possible for history education to progress as well? The answer is yes, it is possible and it needs
to be done. There is no doubt that students enter school with preconceived notions about history,
which are often sustained by teachers as they present the subject in their classrooms, in direct
contrast to how historians actually practice history; however, wrongs can be righted and historical
analysis can be integrated into student learning. To begin with, students have many predetermined
ideas about history. These notions are most commonly derived from what they hear at home, in the
media, and from society in general. Sam Wineburg presents this idea in a number of his works.

The Purpose Of History
For a historicist historian, the purpose of history is to show what actually happened in the past. This
can be found out with sources and past records. Once enough information is found, the historians
can use it to recreate the past and by learning about it as a study they are able to use what they learn
to recreate it with objectivity. After these historians are able to recreate the past from all of their
research, they will discuss it with other historians, who have studied the discipline, and come up
with the only true interpretation of the event. By finding the sole interpretation, these historians are

The History Of Prehistory And History
According to the British historian E.H. Carr, "The line of demarcation between prehistoric and
historical times crossed when people cease to live only in the present, and become consciously
interested both in their past and in their future. History begins with the handing down of tradition".
So prehistory is the event that happened during the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. During the
prehistoric era, a number of inventions and discoveries arise. Therefore, during the Iron Age, the
prehistory gradually ended. After this era, everything that happened during prehistory is now
considered to be a history. Therefore, in order to preserve prehistory, it will be recorded as a history.

German History Essay
Most would agree that it is valuable to acknowledge history, whether it be through documentation,
education, or architectural preservation. However, history can be complex and ugly, stained by war,
genocide, and destruction. Therein lies a philosophical controversy: should these historical "stains"
be acknowledged or buried? What role do these ugly histories have in the development of a society?
Within the last century, no nation has been forced to confront these questions on the same scale that
Germany has (Levinger 118). With a twentieth–century history marked by hatred and the abuse of
power, National Socialism and Soviet communism, Germany's dark history lies only decades in the
past. For this reason, these histories remain freshly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In essence, historic preservation roots collective memory in a physical, tangible space. To many
scholars, memory in this context is not simply information that is recalled and retold (qtd. in Till
11). Instead, it is the act of continuously finding and contextualizing history by means of physical
space. Preservation of historical architecture is therefore unique, as it juxtaposes this history and
memory with the surrounding modern world. This highlights the importance of preserving history
through architecture, rather than museums, textbooks, and archives alone. By preserving the
physical remnants of a city's dark history, residents and passersby are forced to confront this history
nondeliberately. Moreover, according to Rudy J. Koshar, a preserved site must maintain some
present value or purpose. This is particularly relevant when considering the preservation of
buildings or sites which represent a history that is controversial or shameful, as it is important to
balance the shame evoked by this space with the benefits of its preservation.
The task of historic preservation is especially challenging in nations such as Germany which have
pasts that many are reluctant to remember. Germany is a particularly interesting case, as it is now
recognized as one of the most progressive, economically powerful, and politically liberal countries
in the world. Yet, no comparably modern country is

History And Memory Essay
Representation is the coalescence of selected mediums and techniques in an attempt to depict a
veracious reflection of a certain person, object or event. The symbiosis between history and memory
allows for a more cohesive representation of past events, however an inconclusive disposition exists
that cannot be deputised for by either. Mark Baker's post–factum pastiche, The Fiftieth Gate (1997),
and the American Social History Project's patriotic website, The September 11 Digital Archive,
explore the personalisation of history derived from the emotional truth and the legitimisation of
memory attained through statistical data to offer a more comprehensive perspective in the
examination of one's identity. Although the ultimate truth is irretrievable ... Show more content on

Both Mark Baker and the American Social History Project's decision to foreground personal
memory and emotion follows the poststructuralist ideology of Hayden White, who infers that the
knowledge an individual pursues serves to reconstruct a past that draws vital connections to their
identity in the present. By choosing to fabricate his text through a bricolage structure, Baker
accentuates his parents' subjective recollections to explicate that the Holocaust was not just an event
of history, but also a crucial component of Jewish ancestry and his own ethnicity. The structural
division of the "fifty gates" as an extended metaphor denotes the composers emerging cultural value
for the emotional truth in his rigorous comprehension of the past. An impediment manifested from
history alone is portrayed in the juxtaposition between the sibilance "screaming, the sound of shots,
mothers separated from their children" and the indifferent tone "shot 1381" to illustrate the
unsympathetic nature of circumstantial evidence. The capacity of memory to humanise history is a
major element in attaining a cultivated awareness of the past and one's linked identity.
The value of memory in sculpting one's assimilation of the past is demonstrated by the Smithsonian
website through a deliberate selection and emphasis of personal accounts in the critical analysis of
the September 11 attacks. The layout of

Perspectives all are different; sometimes they change and sometimes they stay the same. World
History is both similar and different from all other history studied from 5th grade till 8th grade.
Similarity in history is looking back to a time and noticing it was almost the same as what has
happened before or after. Difference in comparing history is looking at a time and seeing this is very
unlike a time before this or after. The perspective of World History is unique to the history studied
during 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Always looking at something from the same perspective gets to

Why Study History?
Have you ever pondered the importance of history? Do you believe it is worth studying? Our past
provides us with many new ideas, perspectives, and opportunities. It is important to study history
because it teaches us essential skills and traits, gives us examples and ideas so that we can improve
our current and future lives, and it guides many more people to have better citizenship.
History isn't usually simple. It contains many events, big and small, people, and ideas. It is critical to
study our past because it urges us to learn and use important traits and skills such as critical thinking
and seeing with different perspectives. First, history helps us assess evidence we find more
efficiently and thoroughly. "The study ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If we didn't learn more about past events and people who went before us, we would be wasting even
more time by not learning from those mistakes and successes and repeating the same things that
have already been tried before. George Santayana once said,"Those who cannot learn from history
are doomed to repeat it." Improvement, success, and more improvement. Isn't that what most people
are striving for? No one is perfect, and we all have things to work on, so wouldn't we be unwise to
not take advantage of learning from the past? If, from studying history, we learn about a way of
doing something that the people before us already discovered didn't work, what's the point in trying
it again if we know it will fail? "If you take a good look, it may surprise you to learn how many of
the objects that surround you every day were originally invented thousands of years ago by the
ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans or other societies"(Pruitt, 1). We have already been slightly
learning from the past for a while now, and look how far it has brought us. We would be so far away
from so many of the objects and inventions we have today. Think of all the other advancements we
could make if more people started looking to history when they had a question! "History teaches us
to move forward, recognize our mistakes and learn from them, and ultimately create a better
existence for all"(Postma).

US History: The Pros And Cons Of US History
US history is a subject that does not appeal to most high school students. It is often taught very
selectively, mainly discussing the greatest achievements of the history of our nation. History
textbooks commonly avoid circumstances that can reflect poorly on the national character of the
United States. One example is the unknown side of Christopher Columbus which is shielded from
the young minds of history students. History is often taught in bits and pieces, which mold and
manipulate themselves into something completely separate from history itself. A pro of US history
being taught in such a way is that it can show that we, as a nation, have accomplished in the span of
the founding of the land to present day. Some authors and editors may ... Show more content on

Loewen, is a degenerative process (much like calcification) that makes people over into heroes.
Through this process, our educational media turn flesh–and–blood individuals into pious, perfect
creatures without conflicts, pain, credibility, or human interest. This chapter discussed two people,
widely regarded as heroes, Woodrow Wilson, the 28th US president, and Helen Keller, an American
author, political activist, and lecturer. Some of the main points of the theme I read about was that
most textbooks are studded with biographical vignettes of the famed and esteemed, and that some of
those vignettes aren't very deserving. As taken from Lies My Teacher Told Me "Is Chester A. Arthur
more deserving of a space than, say Frank Lloyd Wright? Who influences us more today– Wright,
who invented the carport and transformed domestic architectural spaces, or Arthur, who, um, signed
the first Civil Service Act?" Another main point is under the jurisdiction of the textbook authors and
editors to consider who qualifies as a hero and who isn't up to par with those said qualifications. One
important key point was how heroification is quite crippling to students, and students are learning,
what Loewen calls, "the Disney version of history". Students then end up with non–realistic role
models to look up to and get inspired by, because they don't know the full background of the person,
because heroification makes them seem as this immortal–like person with

Herodotus The Histories
The Histories is a book written by Herodotus during the 5th century BC and is one that is very
useful in the study of history. Herodotus himself was and still called the "Father of History" as it is
believed that he is the first to write down histories. A historian from 400 years after Herodotus,
Dionysius, had stated that Herodotus "chose not to write down the history of a single city or nation,
but to put together many, varied events of Europe and Asia in a single comprehensive work". The
book is useful in the sense that the level of detail present and Herodotus himself included his insight
on the events to give modern historians an idea about the events. These were evident with his
description of Ancient Egypt and his account of the Battle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Great Pyramids were built by slaves under the rule of Cheops, according to the priests that
Herodotus encountered. Cheops had closed all the temples and used slaves for his own advantage.
Some of the slaves were forced to drag blocks of stones from the Arabian hills to the Nile, where
would then be ferried across and other slaves would come and take over and drag the blocks to the
Libyan hills. As Herodotus had said, "they worked by a hundred thousand men at a time, for each
three months continually". This went on for twenty years. However, modern science proves this to
be impossible or extremely hard to achieve when taking in account the size of the pyramid.
According to Herodotus, the pyramid was "five furlongs in length, sixty feet wide" and "forty–eight
feet high at its highest point". The real size of the pyramid is around 750 feet for the sides and 480
feet high. This measurement differs greatly from Herodotus' and creates suspicion on reliability of
Herodotus' writing and therefore would not be useful in the study of

"History never seems like history when you are living through it." This quote by John W. Gardner
accurately depicts the inability of most young people to understand the importance of history. Every
decision that is made creates an outcome. Once that outcome occurs, it becomes history. To many,
history is seen as simply cluster of sequential events of the past. Rather, it is a record of the
emotional and physical hardships generations have gone through to bring us to the present and also
affect our future. In order for history to be taught well, it must be understood that the people of the

During the settlement of the English in the colonies, outbreaks of malaria, smallpox, and other

History Is Memory
History can be defined in a number of ways. One could say history is a record of events that
occurred in the past, or another person could say that history is the knowledge and facts of the past.
Carl Becker's definition is perhaps the simplest and finest definition of history. Becker defines
history as "the memory of things said and done" (223). Memory is history, which is what history
truly is and how it should be looked at by mankind. As long as mankind has that memory, then that
memory of the things said and done will become history. For mankind to truly be able to define
what history is, they must understand the importance of preservation, interpretations, and
periodization with the things said and done.
If history is memory, and that memory is lost, then history can be lost forever. The Earth itself is
billions of years old and mankind has been around on the planet for only a few thousands of those
years. In her book, Marnie Hughes–Warrington mentions a piece of work from R. G. Collingwood
in which he defines history as "a science whose business is to study events not accessible to our
observation" (35). Mankind has only been around for a small number of blinks of an eye, which
means that there is a significant amount of history that mankind still does not know about, and
possibly may never know. Aphrodite of Melos for example, is a famous and beautiful ancient Greek
freestanding statue from the Hellenistic Period. The arms of the statue are missing and mankind

A Dualist View Of History
It seems readily apparent that monism is without a doubt the very worst way to approach history,
Societies and cultures are not one dimensional, but rather are made up of a tapestry of factors. Thus
looking at just one aspect gives the historian only a myopic sense of what was going on or what
people were thinking at a particular time or place in history. While this is typically thought of as
being the consensus history of the great white men, however other schools of historical thought can
also be viewed objectively, as being equally narrow in scope. One simply can not expect to garner a
panoramic perspective of history by looking at it solely from one perspective. Its illogical to think
that a private in Washington's army saw the war ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A dualistic view of history is a better way of looking at history, but still excludes any number of
factors and perspectives and thus is of somewhat limited use in uncovering the full story of the past
as well. Progressive historians of the early 20th century, many of whom were heavily influenced by
Marxist theory, were the first to look at American history from a dualist perspective, followed in
later years by Marxist, Neo–progessives and the New Left historians.
They saw a great deal of division in early American society in sharp contrast to the united front
standing behind the patriot elite, which had previously been ingrained by the romanticized visions of
earlier nationalistic writers. They emphasized this division in American society which had existed
well before the revolution and remained a constant factor in the make up of our nation, indeed it
remains that way today. Much of this type of history attempts to look at history from the bottom up,
that is from the perspective of the working classes and this carries with it the inherent problem of
locating primary sources. While the papers and documents of historically prominent people are
almost invariably collected and archived, the same is can not be said for the personal effects of
average citizens. Therein lies the main weakness of this type of history, however it opened minds
and brought new ideas and visions

Summary: The History Manifesto
The History Manifesto, the 'rallying cry' for the historical field, drew attention to what ought to have

of history came, contrary to the overt argument of Jo Guldi and David Armitage as a result of
increasing global concerns and short–term thinking of professionals worldwide, but rather in part to
the increased use of digital technology and media in scholarly work. The History Manifesto called
for a return to the longue–duree in historical work, as a supposed superior historical method over

Digital media was slow to infiltrate the history field, not surprising considering the field's traditional
nature. However, students are quick to pick–up this new technology and teachers have to be able to

As Cohen pointed out, "many of my sophomores cannot distinguish between a legitimate Web site
that has legitimate primary documents or reprinted articles and pop history sites and chat rooms
where the wildest conspiracies are transformed into reality." In order for students to realize the
credibility of digital sources, the teacher has to be able to adeptly use that same technology and
overcome the historians 'phobia' of digital media. However, unlike Guldi and Armitage's argument,
the embracement of digital technology will not alone preserve the historical field, nor will pushing
for increased longue–duree in light of the vast amount of information that can be electronically

Essay On Prehistory And History
Prehistory literally means "before history". It is derived from the Latin word which means "before"
(Prehistory Wikipedia, 2011). This was the era when there were no written records yet about the
existence of the first wave of ancient humans. This was also the time when the periods were divided

Prehistory gave rise to the emergence of civilizations. This was also the time when the evolution of
the early human beings was influenced by some inventions such as the writing system. So basically,

The Study of History
The Study of History History is, in essence, the study of ourselves. Although we look back and
examine the actions and behaviors of other people in another time and place, we are really looking
back at our own history, almost as though we are looking at an old family photo album. Everything
that has come before us has led up to the current time of our lives. It is all built upon the base that
others prepared for us. So, in that context, it is imperative that we understand, as much as humanly
possible, why things in the past happened the way they did. Just as importantly, we must be able to
understand the actions of those placed in that particular moment in history. Often it is difficult to
understand, why they have behaved the way they have. For instance, why would so many people,
who presumably were decent people in every other way, actively participate or turn a blind eye to
the injustice of slavery? How could so many people in Nazi Germany have silently allowed the
Holocaust to continue? Or even how could the Supreme Court of the United States have ruled, in the
Dred Scott case, that blacks could never be considered United States citizens, even if they were free
(Finkelman, 1997, p.2)? To understand questions such as this, it is important to put the actions of
historical figures in the context of their time. It is impossible to understand actions in isolation, so
the societal norms of the period must be studied as well. In the case of slavery, it had long been held

All throughout modern and pop culture there are many different allusions that lead and reference
back to ancient times. Many of these reference are not where you would expect them to be either
while watching a movie, or TV show, or even listening to music. For example, Achilles Last Stand
by Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Moon Knight by Marvel Comics, and Aladdin by Walt Disney
Features Animation all have some type of allusion to the past in the Ancient world. In the song
Achilles Last Stand, Robert Plant writes about many different aspects of Greek Mythology. He
refers not only to the mythological warrior Achilles but he also describes the Atlas Mountains. But

Greek History Vs Christian History
In classical antiquity, two great traditions had dominance in the art of history: Greek and Christian.
This paper will discuss three primary topics in regard to each tradition's historiography, namely,
what history is, what sources they used and by what method they are analyzed, and what is the
relevance of studying history. Each topic will be explained for each tradition and a comparison
between the traditions will follow per topic. As a whole, it will be demonstrated that the Greek and
Christian historians differed in their presuppositions taken to the historical records, and this is what
caused their superficial differences. For early Greek historians, history was the chronological
account of past events. Both Herodotus and Thucydides endeavored to described these events by
explaining the human actions behind them through natural means, not divine means. As stated,
Herodotus viewed events as chronologically successive. In other words, events happened one after
the other with causal relations between them. Moreover, Thucydides ... Show more content on

that was relevant to the people who studied it, despite the fact that the students of it were not
remotely close to the time period the events they studied took place. This is the case since divinely
authorized kings would affect how persons viewed their current political situation, and it showed
them that trials that they faced were not very different from other trials that took place due to the
hand of God. Therefore, the relevance of history to the Christian was not merely a look into the past,

History And Its Impact On History
History is a course that contains a lot of fundamental information. It is a science that studies the past
of the human race and the human civilizations, assists us to comprehend the present, so we have a
better vision for the future. The History seeks to reconstitute the past event. For the reason, history
has its objectives, methods. All the information of history is related to the time and space because
the consideration of an historical event requires placing it in time and in a given space. By means of
history, we understand and analyze the cultures of the past, and compare it with the present reality.
In the same idea, history also help us to find solutions to some situations that had been lived in the
past. History is being maintains intact for many generations through textbooks, oral sources
(speeches, anecdotes, legends recording), Status.
Authors of textbooks have taken advantage of their position as writers to manipulate the histories of
the past. They do so because of groups of people who are dominant. Those groups are the
governments, authors, medias, scientists, and religious leaders. History teaches at schools are not

Latinx History

  • 1. Latinx History History combined with an enhanced learning environment serve a strong purpose in helping us understand the past for the approach of a better future. Throughout the semester, students were encouraged to critically examine momentous events and time periods in Latinx history (which is commonly overlooked in the U.S.) to assess the importance each of these different components, and how they contribute to the generalized American history we are taught today. While comparing our semester research project and our initial reading of Vicki L. Ruiz's Nuestra America, I found they both compliment each other as they each highlight challenges in Latinx history since the 1500s until present day. Through our individual research along with class discussions/lectures, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This serves as major importance in a time where there are continuous misperceived notions that sometimes restricts our society from progression due to a lack of understanding, ineffective delivery of information, or unfortunately complete ignorance. Based on the challenges and contributions our research subjects dealt with, I would like to pose two general questions that will hopefully spark an engaging class–wide discussion and reflection: Through the course of our semester, we have discussed various concepts that has redefined Latinx history and what it specifically means to be Latinx – With that said, what changes can be listed altogether that has significantly impacted the Latinx community since the Civil Rights movement? More importantly (with the knowledge of this particular era and previous time periods in mind from both our course and collective book), what struggles has continued to remain constant for the community and where is there room for growth for Latinx history?(*) Also, Ruiz depicts the need to recognize the struggles of Latinx women overpowering the strong machismo idealities set in place at the time. Considering a discussion in class regarding Luisa Moreno, a majority of the class identified Moreno as a "deadbeat mom" which in return seemingly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. History 302 Reflection Theory and history I always thought never go together and when it was required for me to take History 302 I was very confused why it was a theory class. At the start and throughout the class it was a struggle to keep up what it meant to look at history through a Marxist, cultural, or social lens and how that had anything to do with theory. The class was a struggle but not impossible as each article or monograph that were given out for readings provided insight of what these lens were meant to do. Even though I have taken upper division classes at CSULA and studied historiography, history 302 provided me with a new perspective on how history progressed through time. This course brought me a variety of different viewpoints that I did not see ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marxist lens allowed me to change my grand narrative view of history and be able to see the struggle between two parties and how that was rooted in many monographs and lectures. When we were discussing about Marxist and Marxism I connected more closely with that than the other lens that was taught later in the year. I always saw the struggle between two parties as the root in every history and monographs but always assumed that it was how history was researched and taught. It slightly changed my perspective as I now know that my lens was not grand narrative but more of a Marxist. This allowed my progression as a history student to be able to look at monographs and be able to figure out the viewpoint the historian is trying to establish to the readers. I had the most difficult time with Foucault and his social theory as it was hard to separate what I believed was economic when it was social. Eric Avila and his cultural theory was a bit easier for me as I felt more comfortable with cultural theory compared to social theory. This class provided me with different monographs based on each theory that has strengthened my skills with writing and critical analyze of historical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Public History Danielle Sherrard Introduction to Public History Ever since public history emerged on college universities in the 1980s, historians have still had difficulties defining the term. The National Council on Public History's definition of the term stirred the debate even more. According to the National Council on Public History, "public history describes the many and diverse ways in which history is put to work in the world" (NCPH 2016). This definition helps the public understand that public history focuses around real world issues in an applicable way. Public Historians use such tools as photographs, oral histories, museum exhibitions, and multimedia to address a wide variety of historical issues and to present those issues to a non–academic audience. The primary difference between public and academic history is in the area of communication––in the audiences that we attempt to reach and in the products that we use to convey our scholarship to those audiences. an interactive process between the historian, the public, and the historical object. the belief that history and historical–cultural memory matter in the way people go about their day–to–day lives. • 7. The Importance of History Essay What is history? Should we study history? Who creates history? Is history relevant? The definition of history, is a question which has sparked international debate for centuries between the writers, readers, and the makers of history. It is a vital topic which should be relevant in our lives because it?s important to acknowledge past events that have occurred in our world that deeply influences the present. This essay will discuss what history is, and why we study it. History is the study of past events leading up to the present day. Biographies and historical fiction may popularize these entities/figures with descriptions of people who lived in the past or events that happened in the past. Among other things, King Leopold II of Belgium (1835–1909), is known for the exploitation of Congo and the mass murder of its citizens as told in King Leopold?s Ghost by Adam Hochschild. King Leopold II of Belgium, created and ironically erased history by ultimately slashing the area's population by ten million during his reign in the Congo, and still managed to shrewdly foster a reputation as a great humanitarian. In telling this story, Hochschild gave detailed descriptions, especially of the individuals involved, both good and bad. Set in the palaces and boardrooms of Europe and in the villages of central Africa, it tells the story of the tragedy that took place during Leopold's so called rule. This ?horror? story gives and reveals the utter most secrets of the respected King Leopold. • 9. History : A New Form Of History Doing History Essay: Up until the early nineteenth–century, history had been written in two dominant traditions, "one predominantly learned and antiquarian, the other essentially literary". However, a postmodern shift in historiography has led to a new form of history, namely 'disobedient histories'. 'Disobedient history' as a new form of history moves away from Leopold Von Ranke's ideas of history being a rigorous scientific inquiry towards a more diverse and cultured form. Some of these forms include graphic novels, photo journals, dramatised series of events or blog posts. My output was the latter, my blog post was designed to analyse literary and artistic form of memory in the Holocaust, and the problems the forms present. By choosing the medium of a blog post I aimed to challenge traditional academic rules, to use a medium that would serve to democratise history for the modern era, and also to create conversation with the wider socio cultural scene; with the argument also pertaining to 'disobedient history' as a recognisable form of history method and writing. As expected, the blog that has been created is not a traditional academic form of historical writing; however, new works in the field of historical writing may argue differently. In the traditional orthodox view of history, there has been a refusal to consider historical narratives as a manifestation of 'verbal fictions'. As Hayden White describes "verbal fictions, the contents of which are as much invented as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Social History Of Medicine Earlier issues of SHM include articles that are profoundly insistent upon the importance of 'history from below' in developing and constituting understandings of health and medicine. As these articles were primarily structured and written during the cultural and linguistic turn in historical analysis it is clear that they present arguments that aim to revise modernist approaches to the social history of medicine. Most of which are interested in the history of published medical texts or the views of the medical elite. The article by Liora Navon, 'Beggars, Metaphors, and Stigma: A Missing Link in the Social History of Leprosy' outlines the need for the adoption of a 'history from below' perspective in addressing understandings of leprosy in Thailand. Her article states that 'the interviews conducted for this study with patients diagnosed before the 1950s and their offspring reveal that, unlike their portrayal in archival sources, manifestations of extremely negative or positive attitudes were quite rare.' Similarly Peter Elmer's review of Medicine and the Market in England and Its Colonies, c.1450–c. 1850, by Mark S. R. Jenner and Patrick Wallis argues that their work attributes a link between the creation of a medical marketplace with a 'reorientation towards the role of the patient in medical transactions'. • 13. History And History: The Past And The Past? Language is a complex and complicated system of symbols and sounds which occasionally becomes the source of misunderstandings. Most of the time, there are certain words that hold various meanings. One very specific example of which is the word History. History can be defined in numerous ways, such as the past and the study concerning the past. Whilst both definitions sound the same, there is a clear distinction between the two. The main difference between them is that history expressed as the past refers to the entire series of events that took place before a given point in time, while history as the study of the past is the branch of knowledge that deals with past events. The past involves everything that has occurred since the beginning of time – every human being's thoughts and actions, every plant that grows in the forest, every physical and chemical transformation, and more since the dawn of time. In contrast to that, History as a study tackles the interpretation of records left over from the past. Moreover, the lifeless men whose corpses are most likely 20–feet below the ground may have been teachers who imparted knowledge, soldiers who died fighting for freedom, doctors saving millions of ailing patients, or may even be the first men who roamed around the earth. • 15. History And History By James A. Baldwin "People are trapped in history and history is trapped in them." James A. Baldwin The study of history not only provides information about the past, but gives people knowledge and details that help shape lives, in the present and future. For the longest time it has been said that history is bound to repeat itself if it is not understood. Although the repetition of previous tragic historical events is an important reason to study the past, there are many others. As American playwright James Baldwin said, people are a part of history, but history is just as much part of them. This is one of the more fundamental reasons why the exploration of the past is vital to human beings. The study of history gives humans a sense of belonging, a feeling that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without a knowledge of history how would someone know that the tradition of having a Christmas tree is thought to come from Pagans in Germany. Or that Christianity dates back to the 1st. century A.D. Many people do not believe that learning these things is useful, that knowing where traditions and beliefs come from is useless. Henry Ford famously said "History is bunk". This could not be more wrong. Humans want to know why they do things, and looking into the past gives us these answers. Although is has been said time and time again that history will repeat itself, many people still do not know the full effect it could have. It is very unlikely to know that communism does not work in large numbers without studying where it began, and that it did not work. • 17. History In The Waterland Waterland is a form of postmodern fiction, which reflects on story–telling, combining both fictive and historical narration (Atilla, 1). The protagonist, Tom Crick, who is also the narrator of the stories, is a history teacher that spends his life trying to discover the mysteries from his past. In the present, he is dismissed from his job, because the school considers history to have little value in the modern world. In one of his last classes, Tom turned his lessons into story–telling sessions, by starting with stories about his personal life and incorporating at the same time his family history and the French Revolution, with the idea to show the meaning of history. In forming his past into a narrative and by using knowledge that perhaps was previously unavailable, the historian discovers what has been forgotten about the past and brings all the pieces together. Private or public, histories brings together all the amount of data, categories and concepts to form themselves into a narrative (Atilla, 4 ). As Linda Hutcheon specifies, in historiographic metafiction the characters are often seen trying to analyze the data that they have collected. Usually, postmodern fiction uses historical data, which it assimilates in order to lend a feeling of verifiability. However, historiographical metafiction incorporates, but rarely assimilates such data. It plays upon the truth and lies of the historical record, in order to foreground the possible failures of recorded history (Hutcheon, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They already lack the interest to know more about their country's history because they fail to understand what the real essence of learning about history is. Probably because their teachers during their elementary and high school days just taught them about memorizing the facts that just includes all of the dates of historical events and names of heroes and leaders. That is why, they do not get any value from this kind of learning. Therefore, in order to let others appreciate about the history of their country, it should first be taught to them in a right way. It should be inculcated from the very start that what you learn from history is what you will have to learn later about the society and the people around you. People should first understand that history is not just all about facts. It is about why life happened and why we share the same value and tradition. These insights should let them realized that if without history, we won't have a basis of why and how life is in the present and will be in the future. At least, when we have a firm knowledge of what our history is, we will be able to have a right and clear disposition of the present and future circumstance that we shall encounter because everything just goes back to our history. History is who we are and why we are the way we are" ("History Quotes"). David Mccullough is saying that history is about us, it's a part of everyone, it's a part of who we are. Howard Zinn says that history is about the future it's about us. Though some might see that his interpretations are saying that our history doesn't matter and isn't about us today. Because Zinn reveals that we need to see all sides of history because it is about our future, which evokes the idea that history is about us today. Zinn shows that we need to see all sides of history because it is about future, which reveals that history is about us today. Zinn writes in his book, "I am supposing, or perhaps only hoping, that our future may be found in the past's fugitive moments of compassion rather than in its solid centuries of warfare" (Zinn 8). However, in my studies I have found quite the opposite. History is more than dates or names, history is us. It is why and how, it is the thoughts and motivations of people long gone but whose struggles are able to resonate within us. There is no single history, no matter what text you read, what you remember you will never have a comprehensive account of what happened. As a society of individuals we have our own thoughts, motivations and experiences which make different people. So the purpose of history is not about what happened, but what can be proven. In terms of my historic philosophy, history itself is the study of the past and the application of lessons learned by our ancestors in the present day, a vessel for the knowledge that has been handed down through generations. History allows us to establish perspective on our own lives and how our way of life came to be. Thus, it must be written and observed with an objective and unbiased lens, because establishing a valid historical perspective of the accounts and stories recounted by either side of any historical quagmire is the most important skill in the ... In which he states: "Historians normally make truth claims, and they ask us to accept those claims based on the reasoning they present. So a major aspect of the study of historiography has to do with defining the ideas of evidence, rigor, and standards of reasoning for historical inquiry." (Little) Little initially states that the goal of an analysis is to understand and outline any truths. In order to do this, he adds that one must make their own decisions on how defining and observe the evidence given and that it is the historian's burden to prove any of his inquiries. When looking at a specific event in history is important to use all three of these steps in order to create an adequate analysis. For example, when looking at the Partitions of Poland from 1772 – 1795 a historical perspective must first be established with regard to any applicable historiographical schools. The partitions were the actions taken by three main Eastern European powers, Austria, Prussia and Russia, in carving up their common enemy, The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. • 35. History And Its Impact On History In taking a peak at a current history lesson taught in a classroom, the common outsider will likely find nothing wrong with its content or presentation. They hear many famous names and key dates of the famous people and events of the past and do not bat an eyelash because they learned history in the same way. On the other hand, if a historian were to walk into that same classroom, they would be incredibly disappointed by the fact that students are not really learning how to practice history. Granted, they probably learned about history in the same way at one point or another during their educational careers, but that was in the past and this is the current day. As science, technology, and other subjects advance, why is the general public resolved to allow history to remain in the past? Is it not possible for history education to progress as well? The answer is yes, it is possible and it needs to be done. There is no doubt that students enter school with preconceived notions about history, which are often sustained by teachers as they present the subject in their classrooms, in direct contrast to how historians actually practice history; however, wrongs can be righted and historical analysis can be integrated into student learning. To begin with, students have many predetermined ideas about history. These notions are most commonly derived from what they hear at home, in the media, and from society in general. What role do these ugly histories have in the development of a society? Within the last century, no nation has been forced to confront these questions on the same scale that Germany has (Levinger 118). To many scholars, memory in this context is not simply information that is recalled and retold (qtd. in Till 11). Instead, it is the act of continuously finding and contextualizing history by means of physical space. Preservation of historical architecture is therefore unique, as it juxtaposes this history and memory with the surrounding modern world. This highlights the importance of preserving history through architecture, rather than museums, textbooks, and archives alone. By preserving the physical remnants of a city's dark history, residents and passersby are forced to confront this history nondeliberately. Moreover, according to Rudy J. Koshar, a preserved site must maintain some present value or purpose. This is particularly relevant when considering the preservation of buildings or sites which represent a history that is controversial or shameful, as it is important to balance the shame evoked by this space with the benefits of its preservation. The task of historic preservation is especially challenging in nations such as Germany which have pasts that many are reluctant to remember. Mark Baker's post–factum pastiche, The Fiftieth Gate (1997), and the American Social History Project's patriotic website, The September 11 Digital Archive, explore the personalisation of history derived from the emotional truth and the legitimisation of memory attained through statistical data to offer a more comprehensive perspective in the examination of one's identity. By choosing to fabricate his text through a bricolage structure, Baker accentuates his parents' subjective recollections to explicate that the Holocaust was not just an event of history, but also a crucial component of Jewish ancestry and his own ethnicity. The structural division of the "fifty gates" as an extended metaphor denotes the composers emerging cultural value for the emotional truth in his rigorous comprehension of the past. • 55. History Is Memory History can be defined in a number of ways. One could say history is a record of events that occurred in the past, or another person could say that history is the knowledge and facts of the past. Carl Becker's definition is perhaps the simplest and finest definition of history. Becker defines history as "the memory of things said and done" (223). Memory is history, which is what history truly is and how it should be looked at by mankind. As long as mankind has that memory, then that memory of the things said and done will become history. For mankind to truly be able to define what history is, they must understand the importance of preservation, interpretations, and periodization with the things said and done. If history is memory, and that memory is lost, then history can be lost forever. The Earth itself is billions of years old and mankind has been around on the planet for only a few thousands of those years. In her book, Marnie Hughes–Warrington mentions a piece of work from R. G. Collingwood in which he defines history as "a science whose business is to study events not accessible to our observation" (35). Mankind has only been around for a small number of blinks of an eye, which means that there is a significant amount of history that mankind still does not know about, and possibly may never know. Aphrodite of Melos for example, is a famous and beautiful ancient Greek freestanding statue from the Hellenistic Period. The arms of the statue are missing and mankind does ... • 57. A Dualist View Of History It seems readily apparent that monism is without a doubt the very worst way to approach history, Societies and cultures are not one dimensional, but rather are made up of a tapestry of factors. Thus looking at just one aspect gives the historian only a myopic sense of what was going on or what people were thinking at a particular time or place in history. While this is typically thought of as being the consensus history of the great white men, however other schools of historical thought can also be viewed objectively, as being equally narrow in scope. One simply can not expect to garner a panoramic perspective of history by looking at it solely from one perspective. Its illogical to think that a private in Washington's army saw the war ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A dualistic view of history is a better way of looking at history, but still excludes any number of factors and perspectives and thus is of somewhat limited use in uncovering the full story of the past as well. Progressive historians of the early 20th century, many of whom were heavily influenced by Marxist theory, were the first to look at American history from a dualist perspective, followed in later years by Marxist, Neo–progessives and the New Left historians. They saw a great deal of division in early American society in sharp contrast to the united front standing behind the patriot elite, which had previously been ingrained by the romanticized visions of earlier nationalistic writers. They emphasized this division in American society which had existed well before the revolution and remained a constant factor in the make up of our nation, indeed it remains that way today. Much of this type of history attempts to look at history from the bottom up, that is from the perspective of the working classes and this carries with it the inherent problem of locating primary sources. While the papers and documents of historically prominent people are almost invariably collected and archived, the same is can not be said for the personal effects of average citizens. Therein lies the main weakness of this type of history, however it opened minds and brought new ideas and visions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Summary: The History Manifesto The History Manifesto, the 'rallying cry' for the historical field, drew attention to what ought to have been the methodology and research method of choice. This reanalysis of such a fundamental aspect of history came, contrary to the overt argument of Jo Guldi and David Armitage as a result of increasing global concerns and short–term thinking of professionals worldwide, but rather in part to the increased use of digital technology and media in scholarly work. The History Manifesto called for a return to the longue–duree in historical work, as a supposed superior historical method over that of the short–term. Further, the manifesto's call for increased digital media use ignored the fundamental problems associated with the use of digital technology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Digital media was slow to infiltrate the history field, not surprising considering the field's traditional nature. However, students are quick to pick–up this new technology and teachers have to be able to adapt and teach their students the basics of historical writing and thinking in light of digital sources. As Cohen pointed out, "many of my sophomores cannot distinguish between a legitimate Web site that has legitimate primary documents or reprinted articles and pop history sites and chat rooms where the wildest conspiracies are transformed into reality." In order for students to realize the credibility of digital sources, the teacher has to be able to adeptly use that same technology and overcome the historians 'phobia' of digital media. However, unlike Guldi and Armitage's argument, the embracement of digital technology will not alone preserve the historical field, nor will pushing for increased longue–duree in light of the vast amount of information that can be electronically scanned and sorted on considerable scale. Historians and teachers will have to change their approach to analysis and information in general, however a radical change which would disrupt the traditional means of communication and research between professionals would be more ... • 61. Essay On Prehistory And History Prehistory literally means "before history". It is derived from the Latin word which means "before" (Prehistory Wikipedia, 2011). This was the era when there were no written records yet about the existence of the first wave of ancient humans. This was also the time when the periods were divided into subgroup system which consists of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Prehistory gave rise to the emergence of civilizations. This was also the time when the evolution of the early human beings was influenced by some inventions such as the writing system. So basically, prehistory is the time when the first set of human beings came into existence along with their discoveries and inventions. "History (from Greek ἱστορία, historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation")[2] is the study of the past, particularly how it relates to humans and it can also refer to the academic discipline which uses narrative to examine and analyze a sequence of past events" (History, Wikipedia, 2014). Discipline Of History Essay The discipline of history is an attempt to form an understanding of the intricacies and associated complexities of the past, although there comes into question which format and style is deemed to be the most effective means of achieving an historical understanding of past events. The rise in an ever increasing popular public history aimed at the mass audience has bought about tension towards traditional academic historical approaches, which for extensive periods have gone as the unquestioned model for educational based historic teaching. Divisions arise as to which approach becomes the most relevant, derived from each camps purpose and nature of history. In essence, the lines that separate both camps are more blurred and intertwined than one is led to believe, thus educators must judge a course that encompasses the unavoidable popular history in order to project compelling as well contestable histories. • 65. Song Of History History has always captured my imagination. Yet although the sweeping tapestry of history is dominated by the epic scenes of wars and revolutions, it is not these which fill my heart with enthusiasm for the subject. That distinction is owed to those who were at the core of these events: Robespierre and Emma Goldman, Peter the Great and Theodora; it is they who truly capture the magnificence and variety that can be found within history's glorious annals. In people and events, I see a reflection of all that I have ever known; the song of history, with all of its crescendos and harmonies, resonates through time, unfaltering. • 69. The Study of History The Study of History History is, in essence, the study of ourselves. Although we look back and examine the actions and behaviors of other people in another time and place, we are really looking back at our own history, almost as though we are looking at an old family photo album. Everything that has come before us has led up to the current time of our lives. It is all built upon the base that others prepared for us. So, in that context, it is imperative that we understand, as much as humanly possible, why things in the past happened the way they did. Just as importantly, we must be able to understand the actions of those placed in that particular moment in history. Often it is difficult to understand, why they have behaved the way they have. For instance, why would so many people, who presumably were decent people in every other way, actively participate or turn a blind eye to the injustice of slavery? How could so many people in Nazi Germany have silently allowed the Holocaust to continue? Or even how could the Supreme Court of the United States have ruled, in the Dred Scott case, that blacks could never be considered United States citizens, even if they were free (Finkelman, 1997, p.2)? To understand questions such as this, it is important to put the actions of historical figures in the context of their time. It is impossible to understand actions in isolation, so the societal norms of the period must be studied as well. In the case of slavery, it had long been held as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Doing History Summary In the opening chapters of both Doing History (2013), by Michael J. Galgano, J. Chris Arndt, and Raymond M. Hyser, and The Methods and Skills of History (2015), by Conal Furay and Michael J. Salevouris, the authors broadly discuss what history is, as well as the kinds and uses of historical knowledge. Doing History focuses closely on the definition of history and the variety of approaches to studying and using historical facts. Chapter One of The Methods and Skills of History emphasizes upon the importance of history in society, while Chapter Two is centered on the nature of history and the task of the historian. According to Doing History, the study of history as a whole is an interpretation of past events based on reliable evidence. However, there can be misuse of historical facts, such as dependence on popular memory, or, how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Current events have a basis in historical fact and the practice of analyzing and acting upon past experiences is all considered thinking historically. Without history, human society would have no identity or base. Chapter Two begins by expressing what Doing History has already stated on the definition of history. However, Methods and Skills delves further into the nature of history by explain that a historian can shed light on an event in history, but nobody can actually show exactly how things took place during that event. All of history is naturally subject to the historian's point of view and interpretations, therefore, the absolute fullest and truest version of history is essentially unattainable. However, this fact does not negate the importance of studying and understanding history, because historical fact is grounded in reliable, factual evidence from the event. Consequently, historians must always be asking questions and looking for the best possible answers for the ever–evolving dialogue of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Allusions In History Reference to History in Pop Culture All throughout modern and pop culture there are many different allusions that lead and reference back to ancient times. Many of these reference are not where you would expect them to be either while watching a movie, or TV show, or even listening to music. For example, Achilles Last Stand by Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Moon Knight by Marvel Comics, and Aladdin by Walt Disney Features Animation all have some type of allusion to the past in the Ancient world. In the song Achilles Last Stand, Robert Plant writes about many different aspects of Greek Mythology. He refers not only to the mythological warrior Achilles but he also describes the Atlas Mountains. But as he describes Atlas Mountain there is a double meaning behind his lyric "The mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the Earth." A more common and well known movie that had an allusion into ancient Rome is that of Aladdin by Walt Disney Features Animation. During the scene when Genie is transforms Aladdin into a prince he is looking through his book and refers to a 'Caesar salad' but instead of a salad he gets a guy with a dagger. • 75. Greek History Vs Christian History In classical antiquity, two great traditions had dominance in the art of history: Greek and Christian. This paper will discuss three primary topics in regard to each tradition's historiography, namely, what history is, what sources they used and by what method they are analyzed, and what is the relevance of studying history. Each topic will be explained for each tradition and a comparison between the traditions will follow per topic. As a whole, it will be demonstrated that the Greek and Christian historians differed in their presuppositions taken to the historical records, and this is what caused their superficial differences. For early Greek historians, history was the chronological account of past events. Both Herodotus and Thucydides endeavored to described these events by explaining the human actions behind them through natural means, not divine means. As stated, Herodotus viewed events as chronologically successive. In other words, events happened one after the other with causal relations between them. Moreover, Thucydides ... The study of history, then, took on a meaning that was relevant to the people who studied it, despite the fact that the students of it were not remotely close to the time period the events they studied took place. This is the case since divinely authorized kings would affect how persons viewed their current political situation, and it showed them that trials that they faced were not very different from other trials that took place due to the hand of God. Therefore, the relevance of history to the Christian was not merely a look into the past, but also a look into why the present is as it is and what the moral standing of the people are as a ...
