Funerary Relief Essay
Which better artwork better portrays a story to remember the deceased, a moment taken from their
everyday life or the story of how the god of death captures his bride? Neither method is better or
worse than the other, they both portray different views of what is important in the memory of loved
ones. The first relief called Funerary Relief With Eight Figures, is simple and captures a daily
activity in the life of the deceased. This relief shows the family aspect of their life; it portrays how
the family would sit around and have conversations together. The second relief is called,
Sarcophagus With The Abduction Of Persephone By Hades. This relief unlike the first, is telling a
story instead of just showing one paused moment of life. The second ... Show more content on

The Funerary Relief With Eight Figures, was created sometime from 360 to 340 B.C. during the
Greek stylistic period. Whereas the Sarcophagus With The Abduction Of Persephone By Hades was
created in the Roman stylistic period somewhere from 200 to 220 A.D. Not only are the two reliefs
built for slightly different reasons, they are also visually different. The monument relief is visually
very spread out, with groupings of characters having their own conversations. The focus is in a few
clusters; the eyes move from one grouping of characters to the next. Each individual person needs to
be perfect, since more of the focus is on each person. The sarcophagus is more crowded than the
other relief, since it must show a whole story instead of just a snapshot of someone's life. Every
character is very animated and all hold very detailed poses which helps to portray the emotional
portion of this distressing event. There is no main focus to this relief, the eyes dart back and forth
trying to take in the whole story. The first relief is more relatable, since it is more realistic and shows
the family aspect of daily life. The second is more abstract in meaning and can show the emotions
that come with losing a loved one, the distress that can be caused by having a loved one taken by
death to

Thanchvil Tarnai Married Marble Analysis
The sculpture made of marble at the length of 7 ft (2.13m), is known as Married Couple (Larth
Tetnies and Thanchvil Tarnai) Embracing dated during 350–300 BCE. The marble sculpture is
actually a lid of a sarcophagus shaped like a bed displaying a man and a woman laying on their side
beside each other. The artist smoothly carved part of the marble to purposely show a bed–like sheet
on the man and woman and carved two pillows seen underneath the couple's heads. The main focus
point or subject of the sculpture is the couple as they are clearly shown in the center beside each
other, looking into each other eyes, and their arms reaching to touch each other as if they were about
to hug. The couple are shown to be wearing nothing but jewelry, the

Depiction of Etruscan and Roman Women in History
The Etruscan society allegedly migrated from Tuscany or Lydia. (Klien, 166) Much of what scholars
know regarding Etruscan society is based on funerary artwork. The Etruscans did not keep any
written records of their activity. What we know about Etruscan lifestyle is based on their artwork left
behind. Early on Etruscan society had a lot of contact with the Greeks that reflect in much of the
Etruscan works of art. The distinction in Etruscan art and Greek art is clearly seen through the
Etruscan representation of couples in art. The pieces in this collection will attempt to show how
women in Etruscan society enjoyed a liberal lifestyle in contrast to Greek and Roman counterparts.

Etruscans had a strong sense of community and valued the contributions women made to growing
the Etruscan society.
In the Sarcophagus of Ramtha Vishnai (Figure 1)and Sarcophagus of Larth Tetnies and Tanchvil
Tarnai (Figure 2) the sculpture represents a relief of a man clad in a bracelet and woman embracing
on their marital bed. The couple covered by a sheet, possibly the husbands cloak or tebenna that
serves as a symbol of their marriage. The sarcophagi are two generations of the same family. An
inscription on the sarcophagus indicates that one coffin contains the parents the other sarcophagus
contains their son and his wife. The parents sarcophagus, carved in a local volcanic stone, show the
more naturalistic character of Etruscan art. The middle–aged man and his wife are pressed close
together, their feet poking out beneath the covers. ("Conservation in Action: Etruscan Sarcophagi.")
A long relief on the side depicts their wedding procession with the couple at the center. The son's
sarcophagus shows the influence of Greek art and styles in this beard and his wife's hairstyle, as
well as in their idealized appearance and prose. The sides of the sarcophagus are carved with less
personal scenes of Greek and Amazon and horsemen attacking armed men on foot. Although the

Bruial of the Dead
Life and Death: Burial of the Dead The only thing in life that is one–hundred percent certain is
death. Humans go through life ignoring this ultimate fate until the day they are confronted. What a
civilization does with their deceased tells a lot about their culture and beliefs in an afterlife. Whether
a person is cremated or the body is preserved, whether they are buried in the ground or placed in a
tomb, and how their final place is decorated all show their cultures values and beliefs and what kind
of person they were. At the Getty Villa museum one piece called the Sarcophagus with Scenes from
the life of Achilles depicts how a Roman sarcophagus can show you their beliefs and customs.

A person with a sarcophagus that has a scene of war might want to be show that they were great
warriors or conquerors in their life.
Another culture that influenced the Romans was the Greeks. The Sarcophagus has a scene of
Achilles life along the side and the way Achilles and the warriors are depicted follow the way the
Greeks depicted their warriors. The warriors along the side of the Sarcophagus show absolutely no
emotion even though there are in the middle of battle some are shown nude as well. This tradition of
depicting men like this comes from the Greek Kouros Statue .The Greek Kouros statues were
created as burial markers and evolved from there. The Kouros statues were carved in such a way to
display the human body in its most natural form, which is nude, and men of war were shown to be
strong and muscular and display no emotion on their face. These traits depict a virtuous man, a man
who displays wisdom, courage, and self–control. These virtues are depicted in all of Greek art and
the Romans took this and combined it with their own artwork giving us the beautiful carving along
the side of the Sarcophagus. In some Roman sarcophagi one could have the hero in the story
depicted like oneself which would then show that the person buried in this sarcophagus thought that
they were virtuous. One famous culture that practiced the use of sarcophagi was the Egyptians. An
example of an Egyptian sarcophagus is the

Sarcophagus Warrior Woman
A sarcophagus is a stone coffin usually associated with the civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and
Rome. The Sarcophagus Depicting a Battle between Soldiers and Amazons (Warrior Women),
housed at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, was crafted by the Romans between 140 – 170 CE
While observing the sarcophagus one notices the rectangular and triangular prisms that give it the
shape similar to that of a building. This particular coffin is made of marble; however, cheaper
alternatives used by Romans include wood, lead, and other stones. Sarcophagi are used as symbols
of remembrance and the afterlife. Sarcophagi were

Sarcophagi used a hierarchical scale, which allows the significant figures to appear larger. The
Sarcophagus Depicting a Battle between Soldiers and Amazons (Warrior Women) is a great example
because the roman commander is the biggest figure. The scene depicted by the sarcophagus includes
a roman commander, horses, and amazons. The roman officer is bigger than his opponents and even
bigger than the horses his enemies rode. The hierarchical scale helps draw attention directly at the
Roman commander, who won the battle against the Amazons. On the four corners the roman
commander is found with an amazon kneeling on one knee, showing his victory. The composition of
the images carved show how the commander was powerful and noble at the same time. The
amazons were found exerting a high amount of energy based on their body language. Rather than
standing with their shoulders over their hips, the figures are leaning at an angle which goes to show
how they are fighting with energy. On the other hand, the Roman commander was found standing

The Denver Museum Of Nature And Science Essay
I visited the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on the 23rd of November. This museum is
located in Denver, Colorado but its history starts in Breckenridge, Colorado. Edwin Carter moved to
Breckenridge in 1868. Edwin Carter's passion for wildlife and science shaped the beginning of a
collection that would change many lives. Edwin began to collect and assemble three displays that
primarily included birds and mammals, butterflies and moths, and crystallized gold. This passion
was for the scientific study of birds and mammals of the Rocky Mountains, which shaped his
collection of Colorado wildlife. Folks from all over this area became increasingly interested. His
collection turned into a display that he sold for $10,000. The idea of the Colorado Museum of
Natural History was born on December 6, 1900. This idea grew until July 1, 1908, when it was open
to the public. Ever since then it has developed into a huge building, preserved many Colorado finds
and finds from other places, added on numerous exhibitions, but most importantly it has "housed
compelling programs and experiences for millions of guests and schoolchildren that inspire a
passion for exploring and understanding our natural and cultural world" (Museum History, 1). I
chose to focus on a specific artifact in the "Egyptian Mummies" exhibition of the Museum of Nature
and Science. The overall theme of this exhibition was of course, Egyptian mummies and culture
pertaining to their religious beliefs of the afterlife.

Tutankhamun's tomb created in 1323 B.C.E in Egypt demonstrates the burial traditions associated
with ancient egypt. Both the visual and contextual pieces to this sarcophagus demonstrates the
complexity and amazement that the ancient egyptians placed around death. From the materials that
the sarcophagus was made out of and the symbols that can be seen, to the historical background
surrounding the pharaoh that was placed inside many details about these people's burial practices
can be made.
The visual aspects of the sarcophagus directly demonstrate some ancient egyptian burial traditions.

Greek Art And Greek Objects Essay
One of the most well–known cultures throughout all of history belonged to the Greeks. Their
heritage was so highly valued that it lived on even after they no longer ruled. The Greeks were some
of the most innovative artists of their time and their work was so inherently beautiful that people
from future cultures fell in love with it and decided to incorporate it into their own customs. The
most famous group known for this was the Romans. After the Romans took over Greece, their love
for its customs bloomed which resulted in many recreations of Greek art that are now seen today.
However, Greek sculpture art had a hard time making it to the modern day. Most sculptures were
made out of bronze and often melted down to be used for other purposes. Any surviving Greek
related art is often just a Roman copy. The Romans are famous throughout history for their copies of
Greek sculptures, especially relief sculptures. However, they also incorporated other Greek
traditions and customs into their lives as well. Romans created separate names to refer to Greek
gods and were often found creating and recreating art based on Greek myths. One specific Greek
custom adopted by the Romans was the way in which they buried their dead. Romans originally
cremated their dead but after the influence of Greek culture, they began burying their dead in large
sarcophagi, with Greek myths elaborately sculpted into the sides, similar to the one kept at the

Sarcophagus Earthquake
April 26, 1986: A nuclear power plant explodes in Chernobyl, Ukraine, which resulted in the
releasement of large amounts of radioactive particles into the open air. Because of this catastrophic
event, civilians and workers in the vicinity of the radiation were exposed to such particles. In
subsequent events of the explosion, many measures were and are being taken to prevent (or at least
curtail) the spread of the nuclear radiation. Almost immediately after the disaster, emergency
workers poured sand and boron from helicopters onto debris from the reactors. Officials blockaded
the area within 18 miles of the reactor from everyone except those with official business concerning
the accident. Weeks after the incident, the Soviet government cut down and buried trees nearby the
destroyed power plants, and built a structure called a "sarcophagus." The sarcophagus is a concrete
building that was constructed in May of 1986, which was considered to be a "temporary fix" by the
Soviet government. Since the original sarcophagus was structurally unsound due to its hasty
construction and long–term exposure to radiation, construction of a new one began in 2006, and
when finished, the building will be slid onto the old ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Literary Analysis And Analysis Of The Alexander Sarcophagus

scenes on the Alexander Sarcophagus, a piece which has much meaning in the study of Alexander
the Great and the lives of the ancient Greeks and Persians as a whole. The artifact has speculative
ties to the ancient kings Abdalonymus and Mazaeus. To begin with, this paper will discuss the
embellishment and making of the Sarcophagus, the locational and creator's information, and the
accuracy of the Wikipedia page on the sarcophagus. Following this, the paper examines any
information lacking in the Wikipedia article, facts which could be added and enhanced, and the
relations between Persians and Greeks and how they impacted ancient Greek society. Moreover, this
paper will examine the Alexander Sarcophagus through the lens of information available to
individuals online, more specifically referring to its Wikipedia article. Analyzing the Wikipedia
article on the Alexander Sarcophagus shows a view of the artifact which contains many flaws. To

The Rule Of Antoninus Plus ( C. Ce )
During the rule of Antoninus Plus (c. 138–161 CE), Romans began to favor burials over cremations
and the demand for sarcophagi grew rapidly (Kleiner 215). Greek mythology was heavily borrowed
upon by the Roman and prominent members of the Roman society wanted to be commemorated in
the fashion of Greek heroes. The Romans took the general principles of an Egyptian sarcophagus
and added Greek mythology to create a unique piece of Roman art and The Sarcophagus Depicting a
Battle between Soldiers and Amazons (Warrior Women) is one such example. The Egyptians were
the first to use a sarcophagus to bury and commemorate their dead, and judging from the war–
themed artwork on this Roman sarcophagus, it was most likely built to commemorate the death of a
great warrior. The Sarcophagus Depicting a Battle between Soldiers and Amazons (Warrior Women)
is a massive piece of Roman funerary art made of a hollowed out block of white marble around
140–170 CE. Weighing an impressive 5511.5 pounds, the sarcophagus is 40 ½ x 91 ½ x 50 ½ inches
in dimension and is comprised of a lid and casket (The Museum of Fine Arts). The identity of the
sculptor is unknown, and considering the careful attention detail on this impressive work of art, it is
possible that crafting the sarcophagus was the work of multiple sculptors. Unlike the Egyptians, who
preferred gold, the mineral of choice for the Romans was marble. Unlike most Egyptian sarcophagi,
which had a portrait of the dead on the lid, the lid of the

What Made Junius Bassus Convert To Christianity
What made Junius Bassus convert to Christianity before he died? Was he scared because he was a
ruler and being a Christian was punishable by death? It is believed that the scenes of judgment were
influenced by Bassus career. There are three scenes that display Christ as a young man (revolvy,

Jesus Christ was killed between 18 – 36 A.D. The four gospels recognize that Jesus died under the

This coffin fundamentally preoccupies the room due to its scale and the treasure of imageries

Among the many artworks I have seen, I decided to discuss about the "Sarcophagus Depicting a
Battle between Soldiers and Amazons (Warrior Women)" from the Roman civilization. It was built
sometime in between 140 A.D. to 170 A.D and is approximately forty and a half inches in length,
ninety–one and a half inches in width, and fifty and a half inches tall in height ("Roman

designed to honor the deceased. Many people are familiar with the formatting and inscriptions of a
gravestone because it is usually engraved with an individual's full name, birth date, and death date.
During the Roman Empire, a sarcophagus, which is a coffin, was widely used to show decorative
themes that includes: battle scenes, hunting scenes, weddings, or other memorable episodes from the
life of the deceased individual. The most luxurious ones were made from marble surrounded by
symbolic sculptures, figures and inscriptions on all four sides ("Sarcophagus"). Another feature that
captured my attention was the large quantity of details used to bring out a lifelike aspect of the
deceased individual's favorable moments in their life. In this artwork, this sarcophagus was
dedicated to a Roman commander. The exterior of the sarcophagus has been well–decorated and

When looking at a piece of artwork, we might find a piece of artwork to be eye catching and

when it can be misunderstood, if you don't understand the meaning behind it, especially if the
artwork is not a common thing that we are use to seeing. There are different cultures that express
themselves differently when it comes to artwork. Some might make artwork of the living and others
might make artwork of the dead. Paying close attention to smaller details of the artwork can give the

The Sarcophagus Of Queen Hatshepsut
The Sarcophagus of Queen Hatshepsut is considered one of the most historic pieces of ancient
Egyptian art that still stands here today in our presence. It is an exquisite work of art, a piece of

three royal sarcophagi that is currently displayed outside of Egypt and is one of they very few from
the eighteenth Dynasty that shows multiple alterations and phases of decorations. This sarcophagus
was originally prepared for Queen Hatshepsut and later was recut for her father, King Thutmose I.
This is an artistic masterpiece from a royal atelier, a prototype for the funeral beliefs and the
traditions, and a pivotal historical piece of the complicated puzzle of early New Kingdom political
history. The New Kingdom began after the Theban family princes expelled the last of several
generations of foreign domination by the Hyksos. They were able to reunite the country and

The two pieces of art Standard of Ur (c. 2600 B.C.E.) and Sarcophagus of Junius Bassus (c. 359
C.E.), both by unknown artists, were ceremonious pieces in their time, and captivating works of art
in ours. While the artists are unknown, their work is indicative of the time period in which they
lived. Religious imagery and depiction of stories were subjects many artists pursued, especially in
the death of their leaders. The sarcophagus was made for a member of the senatorial family, Junius
Bassus, this amazing sculpted sarcophagus depicts multiple religious scenes and imagery. The
Standard of Ur is detailed with the inlaid design, it is called a standard due to how it was found lying

The Standard of Ur is a small trapezoidal box whose two sides and end panels are covered with
figurative and geometric mosaics found in the grave of King Ur–Pabilsag. The mosaics on the
Standard depict life in early Mesopotamia, one side dubbed the "War Side" and the other the "Peace
Side," tell stories that read from the bottom to top of the Standard (The Standard of Ur. n.d.). The
top register of mosaics on each side depicts a king, who is exaggerated in size to show the figure in
a larger scale than others. The Standard depicts the two most significant pieces of early
Mesopotamian culture: the warriors who protected the people, secured access to water, natural
resources and the King who served as an intermediary between the people and the gods. This artifact
is part of the Early Dynastic Period which continued many earlier trends with its art marking an
emphasis on leaders, gods, and roles of the people, The Standard of Ur continues this trend with the
larger than life depiction of the King and brings to light a representation of life at the time while at
war and

Comparison Between Etruscan And Roman Art
Subject 2: Memorializing the Dead in Etruscan and Roman art
Both Etruscan and Roman tomb sculpture function to memorialize the departed allowing them to
move on from the world of the living and seeks to comfort those who have lost the ones they love.
The two societies have differing practices in regards to death and therefore sculptures concerning
the subject are somewhat different with a few identifiable similarities. While both societies seek to
comfort the living and commemorate the dead this is achieved through different approaches. The
Etruscan Sarcophagus with reclining couple from Cerveteri, Italy and the Mummy of Artemidorus
from Roman Egypt are two examples of contrasting representations of the dead. When analyzing
tomb sculpture one of the main questions is whether the work adapts a retrospective approach
(presentation of the deceased as they were in life) or a prospective one (the viewpoint of looking
forward to life beyond the grave). While the Etruscan sarcophagus gives a more retrospective
memorialization through the depiction of the couple in a state of regularity the Roman Mummy of
Artemidorus presents a more prospective approach concerning the deceased through the emphasis of
funerary practices.
The Sarcophagus with reclining couple from the Banditaccia necropolis, Cerveteri, Italy, ca. 520
BCE portrays the subjects in their ideal state of life. It functions as a prime example of the
extravagant Etruscan depiction of death and the deceased. The man and

Sarcophagus With Battle Scene
Since moving here to Texas, I haven't explored around as much as I wanted to. For the first time, I
visited Downtown Dallas and let me tell you.. It was amazing!! I was born in Colombia but was
raised in Charlotte, NC so it was really nice to feel like I was home. I went to Dallas Art Museum in
downtown Dallas. The museum was humongous!! I think it was about 5–6 stories high or maybe
more! When I walked in with my friend this nice lady approached us and gave us a tour around and
gave us some lessons of the art we were interested in. She took us to the Egyptian art which I
thought was pretty awesome but also scary because one art–piece was a coffin so I am thinking ok a
coffin not so scary but when she told me to look closely.... I saw feet!! ... Show more content on

In the sculpture you could see horses being stabbed and laying desperately dead on the floor. You
could see men crying out for help and the bodies of men on the ground. Also, you can see men
fighting for their lives in that bloody war scene. In the art piece you can see the amount of detail in
every piece including the horses, the armour, and the captives. Each piece has emotion, you can feel
the pain, anger and the helplessness on each piece. I say in which this was done during the Roman
period it had to be about war. I thought since it was traditionally Roman it had to depict a great
battle with the Romans and their foe. The romans are heavily aromoured and riding on horses while
the people they are fighting are either naked or wearing a simple toga. The nice lady that guided me
stated that this was most likely created to portray the wars Rome fought with the Germanic
tribesmen along the Danube frontier in what now are Romania and Hungary. The Sarcophagus in
this painting is showing off the great triumphs of a general as a war hero throughout his life. During
that time, Death was not mourned, it was celebrated by their life and the accomplishments that they
have been able to do throughout their life. That's what the painting shows, the battle scene depicted
here was created because the man probably with to identify his life and career with well–known

Reflective Essay On Art
Art for me was always more of an aesthetic thing rather than a historic thing. I never truly thought
about the meaning in art. It was not until I took this class, art history, that I begin not only to critique
a work of art but to appreciate a work of art. The Museum of Fine Arts Houston was a great
experience and its many exhibits were beautiful and insightful. The amount of different cultures that
were being exhibited in this museum was astonishing. I was able to relate many exhibits with what I
have learned in class. I chose to critique three artworks that I found very interesting and beautiful.
All of them are beautiful sculptures from similar backgrounds, that everyone should get to see at
least once in their lifetime. The first artwork was a beautiful sarcophagus, the Sarcophagus of a
Youth that is dated to be from the 5th–4th century B.C., created by the artist Phoenician. This
sarcophagus was made for the burial of nobility. The sarcophagus was made from Parian marble with
a form that was a blend of two cultures; the shape of an Egyptian sarcophagus with a classically
carved Greek face. The Greek face has stoicism, meaning repression of emotion. The sarcophagus
weighs more than two thousand pounds and is seven feet tall. The sarcophagus is in perfect
condition for being for being from the 5th–4th century B.C.; it is one of the two Phoenician
sarcophagi in the United States.

I. This is a three–dimensional rectangular object with a massive lid that has a shape of a flat couch
with two figures reclining on it. Even though both figures look alike and their faces are unfinished,
they are slightly different. The figure in the front is a female. She has long hair, small breast, and a
round face. The other figure is a male. He has a beard; details of his face are more masculine and
angular. Both figures have long clothes. All four sides of the rectangle are carved. The back is not ...

The right and left sections have some damages; therefore, their textures are rough. The space on the
front and right sections is fully used. Their scenes are very dynamic. The proportions of some
figures were not completely observed. For example, horses on the relief in the front are very small
comparing to humans. Another example is the man on the left section. The sculptor had to give him
an unnatural posture awkwardly bending his legs, so that the man did look taller than the central
figure. III. The subject–matter of all three visible sides of the sarcophagi is the scenes from the
Achilles' life. He is a Greek mythical hero of the Trojan War. The subject–matter of the relief on the
right is the discovery of Achilles hiding among the daughters of Lykomedes. According to the myth,
Achilles' mother, Thetis, wants to prevent her son's death and sends him to the court of Lykomedes
on the island of Skyros where Achilles is hidden among the young girls. Soon he is discovered by
Odyssey (the bearded man on all three relieves) with whom he goes to Troy. On the relief in the
front, Achilles mounts his chariot to drag Hector's body before the walls of Troy. Hector was the son
of the Trojan king Priam. Hector mistakenly killed Achilles' friend Patroclus. Overwhelmed by his
grief, Achilles kills Hector. The relief on the left side depicts Achilles putting on his armors with
Odysseus' help. The relief in the back is unfinished and is not visible. Its

Nymph Of The Luo River
In the Nymph of the Luo River, along with the love story of Cao Zhi (曹植), Gu (顧愷之)was good
at depicting characters' expression and the relationship among them. The placement of people are
arranging well; It is obvious to see that the woman on the left side of the hand scroll is the main
character. This woman is called "fú fēi" (洛神), her expression suggest a sense of gloominess and
sorrow, but at the same time, her waving drapery bring out her unique characteristic and her divine
temperament. In the middle of the hand scroll, the emperor Cao is standing there on the riverside,
watching fú fēi leaving him. The story is a well known tragedy and it was a master work by Gu
Kaizhi. The hand scroll gives rise of the sense of story board, our eyes can follow the story line from
right to left, top to bottom. Gu was good at showing character's emotions, however, he didn't have a
good sense of space and perspective. The ratio between human and trees are not in a reality scale;

The first difference will be the use of material and color. The second will be the space arrangement;
in this stone sarcophagus, a better sense of three dimensional space is given. In Nymph of the Luo
River, the arrangement of subjects is balanced but lack of the sense of real space and layering. In
this stone sarcophagus, with a slightly change on the each subjects, the perspective angle creates
foreground, midground and background. However, in terms of the rendering on human and objects,
this engraving still gives a flat feeling, thus, it is lack of detail on human. Unlike Gu's work, this
engraving is focusing on craftsmanship on line works rather than the expression of subjects.
Therefore, the subject matter seems a little bit over occupied, but the clean line work illustration,
decorated frame, and a better ratio on trees and human make this work even more interesting and

The Influence Of Etruscan Culture
Etruscan culture was developed in Italy after about 800 BC. Etruscan culture was flourished in three
confederacies of cities including Etruria, the Po Valley with the eastern Alps, and of Latium and
Campania (Padgett, 2016). Etruscan had business dealings with Archaic Greece. Therefore, Etruscan
art was influenced deeply by Archaic Greece, especially Etruscan art and architecture. Etruscan
religion is very mysterious, and they emphasized the power of nature. They believe that people can
be revived after death. Therefore, their design of cremation and burial are very similar to the real
life. Women had high social status, and they could participate in various art activities and activities.

Throughout history, archaeology has been a tool used to learn more about past human activities and
their cultures by analyzing artifacts, architecture, environment data, and etc. that has been left
behind. Many artifacts and monuments became instrumental in expanding the knowledge of the past
and the Hagia Triada Sarcophagus is no exception. By analyzing the physical details such as
size/dimensions, material, style, images depicted, and the location of the artifact, this can help
people determine the reason and purpose of its existence. Eventually this can lead to how it may

In addition, styles that were common in Minoan Art is present in the images. For example, women
had pale white skin with similar hairstyle, and were bare breasted while the men were dark skinned.
Bulls were also present throughout the sarcophagus, a common theme in various pieces of Minoan
artifacts. However, while much of the images contain styles of Minoan art, there are some details
that are different. This can be seen in the griffin on the shorter side of the sarcophagus where
Minoan characteristics of the griffin with a bird head, leonine body, and notched wings are present
but it is missing details such as the running spirals on its neck and wings like the griffins found in
the Throne Room at Knossos or Xeste 3 on Thera. All this contributes to the date of c. 1400 as this

Sarcophagus Of The Spouse Analysis
The Sarcophagus of the Spouse and the Doryphoros (Spear Bearer) bear several differences due to
the distinctions between the culture and the time period in which they were made. However,
similarities between each sculpture are present as well. For example, both sculptures display several
curved, rounded lines and any harsh lines are indiscernible. In the Sarcophagus of the Spouses,
curved lines can be seen in the edges of the coffin and in the bodies while in the Doryphoros they're
seen through the "gradual S–motion" (pg #150) of the body. Though, the reason for such lines
differs greatly for each sculpture and helps reveal the cultural concerns of the Etruscans and of the
Ancient Greeks. As the Etruscans were concerned with living a fulfilling,

intent was for public display, "sarcophagi advertised the wealth and social status of the deceased and
his or her family by means of their size and the complexity and quality of their sculptures."
(honolulumuseum.org) My first emotion with this piece of art is simple, trust, as the story of

Considering there were no cameras back then, this, art, was the means to display and share one
artistic abilities. This sculpture makes me feel strong and proud, the dynamics of this piece of art
have a very masculine approach to it, especially with the definition of the muscles and the task at
hand. "This fragment depicts two of Hercules' feats as he battles the multi–headed hydra of Lerna at
left and, having killed it, holds the boar of Erymanthea across his shoulders at right."
(honolulumuseum.org) According to mythology, this is just one of the twelve task that was
performed by Hercules depicted on the sarcophagi. This sculpture is also more than masculine, it
also tells a story, as this is just a piece of the sarcophagus, which is a much larger carving, this part
alone can tell a story of pride and heroism; the defeat of the hydra. I have this response as I

of a story from a much larger story, the story of one mans life, the beginning–to–end of

Formal Analysis: Roman Sarcophagus
There have been countless duels between two opposing sides in the history Roman artistry. This
sculpture relief signifies the classic battle of good versus evil. Time and time again, benevolent
heroes find themselves in a struggle to combat worthy yet malicious adversaries. The Roman
sarcophagus, a two by five feet marble coffin, is certainly no exception. It represents another
division to this timeless good–evil epic, its visual characteristics, emphasis on contrasts, and its
extensive array of details give it an identity that is uniquely its own. It portrays a sense of legendary
fantasy to the viewer, one pertaining to hostility, violence, and pure anger. The sculpture seems
overly shallow due to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of the colors seem out of place. The variation in color may be a result of the author
emphasizing certain areas of the sculpture. Most notably, the artist selects to present the sculpture in
three–dimensions, using this technique to accentuate and magnify the combatants and their physical
attributes. Certain parts of these dimensions seem to stick right out at you, giving the viewer a good
impression of the violence and hatred of war.
Interestingly, instead of four, only three sides of the Sarcophagus are filled with images. The long
section illustrates two Greek heroes, presumably Herakles and Iolaos, battling evil centaurs. The two
other sections show a centaur attacking a lioness and the other, the representation of peace in this
work, two centaurs getting along. Herakles and Iolaos are highlighted by the artist's careful attention
to make them protrude the greatest, accentuating their impact and overall importance in this
sculpture. Every powerful muscle in their bodies is portrayed and given detail in three dimensions.
The three–dimensions not only bring these characters closer to reality but also heighten the heroic
nature, masculinity, and belligerent attitude of the Greek heroes. Instead of using basic geometric
shapes to create works of art, the sculptor chooses to increase the detail in the Sarcophagus by
giving everything in the sculpture individual characteristics and traits. They are presented as being

Comparing Two Works Of Art That Featured The God Dionysos
I chose to compare and contrast two works of art that featured the god Dionysos. Dionysos was a
god of celebration and wine, promoting both the intoxicating power of wine and its social benefits
for bringing people together. He was an advocate of peace and a promoter of peaceful civilization.
Both The Hope Dionysos and the Triumph of Dionysos and the Seasons Sarcophagus represent why
Dionysos was such an important and celebrated figure in mythology, which is why I chose to
analyze two works of art that centered on him. My first impression of each piece was of Dionysos as
a peaceful, benevolent and joyful figure. I was struck by the calm peacefulness he embodied in The
Hope Dionysos and the happiness he shared on the Triumph of Dionysos and the Seasons
Sarcophagus. Though there are many elements to compare and contrast, my analysis will show that
both pieces are tributes and representations of Dionysos meaning and purpose in Roman art. The
Hope Dionysos, displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Greek and Roman Art gallery,
depicts Dionysos standing and leaning with one arm on a smaller female figure that is believed to
Spes, the personification of hope. He is shown without his usual attributes of a drinking cup or a
pinecone–topped staff, and both the hand at his side and the hand resting on Spes and reaching out
towards the viewer are empty. Spes, however, holds what appears to be a lotus flower in her hand.

Sarcophagus: A Coffin of Elegance and Splendor
Today, we have many beautiful works of art to thank the Romans for. These pieces give us insight
into the lives and culture of the Roman people. One of the most prolific pieces of artwork is the
sarcophagus. A sarcophagus is a stone coffin, bearing sculpture and inscriptions. It was often
displayed as a monument and spoke to the greatness of the individual. These coffins were associated
with ancient civilizations of Egypt, Rome and Greece. Roman coffins or sarcophagi were ornate and
usually reserved for the rich and the royal. However, in ancient Rome, this privilege was extended to
warriors of stature as well.
The "Sarcophagus Depicting a Battle between Soldiers and Amazons (Warrior Women)" is a Roman
sarcophagus for a Roman military commander. The period was between 140 A.D. – 170 A.D. Made
of marble, this artwork is massive with total measurements of approximately 40 ½ x 91 ½ x 50 ½
inches. It is rectangular in shape with four sides. The main register has reliefs that are skillfully and
meticulously carved showing details of the battle scene between the two armies. Every inch of the
detailed register is covered with the battle scene which appears to have a 3D effect.

separation far from the fundamental towns, were utilized by the entire town. Families, nonetheless,
normally accomplished their own particular segments in which to put their precursors. Inside of the
tombs archeologists have found, among different things, sarcophagi containing the ashes or stays of
individuals (Scullard 93–94). In spite of the fact that the sarcophagi were by and large very vast,
they were utilized to house the cremated stays of people. Numerous contain little holes where urns

are uncertain about why their size does not specifically coordinate their capacity but rather
conjecture that size needed to do with endeavoring to make resemblances that were to some degree

Analysis Of The Joys And Sorrows Of Mary
The museum that I visited was the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida. The artwork I
viewed was titled, The Joys and Sorrows of Mary (Life of Christ) and this art piece was created
around 1375 to 1400
The artwork, The Joys and Sorrows of Mary (Life of Christ), was created in Late Gothic period.
I am comparing The Joys and Sorrows of Mary and the Sarcophagus of Junius Bassus
Organization:
In The Joys and Sorrows of Mary diptych, the author utilizes gothic style, with lancet windows,
pointed arches, and also seemed to be going for corinthian type columns. The author organized the
art piece in a realistic, natural way, paying close attention to detail, and carving the art in high relief,
allowing people to see the art scenes from a distance. The facial expressions are simple, kind, and
the body language is subtle. The Virgin Mary also stands in "Gothic S–curve" stance in the
Annunciation, where her movement is smooth and continuous, and her weight is shifted toward her
right side (Anonymous). The lower four scenes represent the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, and
Adoration of the Magi. The upper scenes represent Noli me tangere ("touch me not"), the
Crucifixion, Presentation in the Temple, and the Coronation of the Virgin (Anonymous). In the
Sarcophagus of Junius Bassus, the artist combined Roman and Christian characteristics to represent
Junius Bassus' conversion from Paganism to Christianity. The sarcophagus has different biblical

Funerary Relief Essay

  • 1. Funerary Relief Essay Which better artwork better portrays a story to remember the deceased, a moment taken from their everyday life or the story of how the god of death captures his bride? Neither method is better or worse than the other, they both portray different views of what is important in the memory of loved ones. The first relief called Funerary Relief With Eight Figures, is simple and captures a daily activity in the life of the deceased. This relief shows the family aspect of their life; it portrays how the family would sit around and have conversations together. The second relief is called, Sarcophagus With The Abduction Of Persephone By Hades. This relief unlike the first, is telling a story instead of just showing one paused moment of life. The second ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Funerary Relief With Eight Figures, was created sometime from 360 to 340 B.C. during the Greek stylistic period. Whereas the Sarcophagus With The Abduction Of Persephone By Hades was created in the Roman stylistic period somewhere from 200 to 220 A.D. Not only are the two reliefs built for slightly different reasons, they are also visually different. The monument relief is visually very spread out, with groupings of characters having their own conversations. The focus is in a few clusters; the eyes move from one grouping of characters to the next. Each individual person needs to be perfect, since more of the focus is on each person. The sarcophagus is more crowded than the other relief, since it must show a whole story instead of just a snapshot of someone's life. Every character is very animated and all hold very detailed poses which helps to portray the emotional portion of this distressing event. There is no main focus to this relief, the eyes dart back and forth trying to take in the whole story. The first relief is more relatable, since it is more realistic and shows the family aspect of daily life. The second is more abstract in meaning and can show the emotions that come with losing a loved one, the distress that can be caused by having a loved one taken by death to ... • 2. Thanchvil Tarnai Married Marble Analysis The sculpture made of marble at the length of 7 ft (2.13m), is known as Married Couple (Larth Tetnies and Thanchvil Tarnai) Embracing dated during 350–300 BCE. The marble sculpture is actually a lid of a sarcophagus shaped like a bed displaying a man and a woman laying on their side beside each other. The artist smoothly carved part of the marble to purposely show a bed–like sheet on the man and woman and carved two pillows seen underneath the couple's heads. The main focus point or subject of the sculpture is the couple as they are clearly shown in the center beside each other, looking into each other eyes, and their arms reaching to touch each other as if they were about to hug. The couple are shown to be wearing nothing but jewelry, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Depiction of Etruscan and Roman Women in History The Etruscan society allegedly migrated from Tuscany or Lydia. (Klien, 166) Much of what scholars know regarding Etruscan society is based on funerary artwork. The Etruscans did not keep any written records of their activity. What we know about Etruscan lifestyle is based on their artwork left behind. Early on Etruscan society had a lot of contact with the Greeks that reflect in much of the Etruscan works of art. The distinction in Etruscan art and Greek art is clearly seen through the Etruscan representation of couples in art. The pieces in this collection will attempt to show how women in Etruscan society enjoyed a liberal lifestyle in contrast to Greek and Roman counterparts. Etruscan women were adorned with lavish jewels, had a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Etruscans had a strong sense of community and valued the contributions women made to growing the Etruscan society. In the Sarcophagus of Ramtha Vishnai (Figure 1)and Sarcophagus of Larth Tetnies and Tanchvil Tarnai (Figure 2) the sculpture represents a relief of a man clad in a bracelet and woman embracing on their marital bed. The couple covered by a sheet, possibly the husbands cloak or tebenna that serves as a symbol of their marriage. The sarcophagi are two generations of the same family. An inscription on the sarcophagus indicates that one coffin contains the parents the other sarcophagus contains their son and his wife. The parents sarcophagus, carved in a local volcanic stone, show the more naturalistic character of Etruscan art. The middle–aged man and his wife are pressed close together, their feet poking out beneath the covers. ("Conservation in Action: Etruscan Sarcophagi.") A long relief on the side depicts their wedding procession with the couple at the center. The son's sarcophagus shows the influence of Greek art and styles in this beard and his wife's hairstyle, as well as in their idealized appearance and prose. The sides of the sarcophagus are carved with less personal scenes of Greek and Amazon and horsemen attacking armed men on foot. • 4. Bruial of the Dead Life and Death: Burial of the Dead The only thing in life that is one–hundred percent certain is death. Humans go through life ignoring this ultimate fate until the day they are confronted. What a civilization does with their deceased tells a lot about their culture and beliefs in an afterlife. Whether a person is cremated or the body is preserved, whether they are buried in the ground or placed in a tomb, and how their final place is decorated all show their cultures values and beliefs and what kind of person they were. At the Getty Villa museum one piece called the Sarcophagus with Scenes from the life of Achilles depicts how a Roman sarcophagus can show you their beliefs and customs. The Sarcophagus with Scenes from the Life of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A person with a sarcophagus that has a scene of war might want to be show that they were great warriors or conquerors in their life. Another culture that influenced the Romans was the Greeks. The Sarcophagus has a scene of Achilles life along the side and the way Achilles and the warriors are depicted follow the way the Greeks depicted their warriors. The warriors along the side of the Sarcophagus show absolutely no emotion even though there are in the middle of battle some are shown nude as well. This tradition of depicting men like this comes from the Greek Kouros Statue .The Greek Kouros statues were created as burial markers and evolved from there. The Kouros statues were carved in such a way to display the human body in its most natural form, which is nude, and men of war were shown to be strong and muscular and display no emotion on their face. These traits depict a virtuous man, a man who displays wisdom, courage, and self–control. These virtues are depicted in all of Greek art and the Romans took this and combined it with their own artwork giving us the beautiful carving along the side of the Sarcophagus. In some Roman sarcophagi one could have the hero in the story depicted like oneself which would then show that the person buried in this sarcophagus thought that they were virtuous. One famous culture that practiced the use of sarcophagi was the Egyptians. An example of an Egyptian sarcophagus is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Sarcophagus Warrior Woman A sarcophagus is a stone coffin usually associated with the civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The Sarcophagus Depicting a Battle between Soldiers and Amazons (Warrior Women), housed at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, was crafted by the Romans between 140 – 170 CE While observing the sarcophagus one notices the rectangular and triangular prisms that give it the shape similar to that of a building. This particular coffin is made of marble; however, cheaper alternatives used by Romans include wood, lead, and other stones. Sarcophagi are used as symbols of remembrance and the afterlife. Sarcophagi were Sarcophagi and altars were usually located outside of the city as Romans believed that burials inside the city were a violation. Around 450 BCE the first Roman code of law, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sarcophagi used a hierarchical scale, which allows the significant figures to appear larger. The Sarcophagus Depicting a Battle between Soldiers and Amazons (Warrior Women) is a great example because the roman commander is the biggest figure. The scene depicted by the sarcophagus includes a roman commander, horses, and amazons. The roman officer is bigger than his opponents and even bigger than the horses his enemies rode. The hierarchical scale helps draw attention directly at the Roman commander, who won the battle against the Amazons. On the four corners the roman commander is found with an amazon kneeling on one knee, showing his victory. The composition of the images carved show how the commander was powerful and noble at the same time. The amazons were found exerting a high amount of energy based on their body language. Rather than standing with their shoulders over their hips, the figures are leaning at an angle which goes to show how they are fighting with energy. On the other hand, the Roman commander was found standing tall and ready to defend his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Denver Museum Of Nature And Science Essay I visited the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on the 23rd of November. This museum is located in Denver, Colorado but its history starts in Breckenridge, Colorado. Edwin Carter moved to Breckenridge in 1868. Edwin Carter's passion for wildlife and science shaped the beginning of a collection that would change many lives. Edwin began to collect and assemble three displays that primarily included birds and mammals, butterflies and moths, and crystallized gold. This passion was for the scientific study of birds and mammals of the Rocky Mountains, which shaped his collection of Colorado wildlife. Folks from all over this area became increasingly interested. His collection turned into a display that he sold for $10,000. The idea of the Colorado Museum of Natural History was born on December 6, 1900. This idea grew until July 1, 1908, when it was open to the public. Ever since then it has developed into a huge building, preserved many Colorado finds and finds from other places, added on numerous exhibitions, but most importantly it has "housed compelling programs and experiences for millions of guests and schoolchildren that inspire a passion for exploring and understanding our natural and cultural world" (Museum History, 1). I chose to focus on a specific artifact in the "Egyptian Mummies" exhibition of the Museum of Nature and Science. The overall theme of this exhibition was of course, Egyptian mummies and culture pertaining to their religious beliefs of the afterlife. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Both the visual and contextual pieces to this sarcophagus demonstrates the complexity and amazement that the ancient egyptians placed around death. From the materials that the sarcophagus was made out of and the symbols that can be seen, to the historical background surrounding the pharaoh that was placed inside many details about these people's burial practices can be made. The visual aspects of the sarcophagus directly demonstrate some ancient egyptian burial traditions. A place left untouched by the elements for well over a century, only rarely plundered by the living when a member of the family had passed. • 9. Greek Art And Greek Objects Essay One of the most well–known cultures throughout all of history belonged to the Greeks. Their heritage was so highly valued that it lived on even after they no longer ruled. The Greeks were some of the most innovative artists of their time and their work was so inherently beautiful that people from future cultures fell in love with it and decided to incorporate it into their own customs. The most famous group known for this was the Romans. After the Romans took over Greece, their love for its customs bloomed which resulted in many recreations of Greek art that are now seen today. However, Greek sculpture art had a hard time making it to the modern day. Most sculptures were made out of bronze and often melted down to be used for other purposes. Any surviving Greek related art is often just a Roman copy. The Romans are famous throughout history for their copies of Greek sculptures, especially relief sculptures. However, they also incorporated other Greek traditions and customs into their lives as well. Romans created separate names to refer to Greek gods and were often found creating and recreating art based on Greek myths. One specific Greek custom adopted by the Romans was the way in which they buried their dead. Romans originally cremated their dead but after the influence of Greek culture, they began burying their dead in large sarcophagi, with Greek myths elaborately sculpted into the sides, similar to the one kept at the Walter 's Art Museum depicting the abduction of ... • 10. Sarcophagus Earthquake April 26, 1986: A nuclear power plant explodes in Chernobyl, Ukraine, which resulted in the releasement of large amounts of radioactive particles into the open air. Because of this catastrophic event, civilians and workers in the vicinity of the radiation were exposed to such particles. In subsequent events of the explosion, many measures were and are being taken to prevent (or at least curtail) the spread of the nuclear radiation. Almost immediately after the disaster, emergency workers poured sand and boron from helicopters onto debris from the reactors. Officials blockaded the area within 18 miles of the reactor from everyone except those with official business concerning the accident. Weeks after the incident, the Soviet government cut down and buried trees nearby the destroyed power plants, and built a structure called a "sarcophagus." The sarcophagus is a concrete building that was constructed in May of 1986, which was considered to be a "temporary fix" by the Soviet government. Since the original sarcophagus was structurally unsound due to its hasty construction and long–term exposure to radiation, construction of a new one began in 2006, and when finished, the building will be slid onto the old ... • 11. Literary Analysis And Analysis Of The Alexander Sarcophagus "The Persians are losing the engagement, but the valiant horseman is clearly holding his own; the nude figure, rather than representing a known Macedonian, is a brave Graeco–Macedonian warrior about the meet a noble death. " In this description, Waldemar Heckel describes one of the battle scenes on the Alexander Sarcophagus, a piece which has much meaning in the study of Alexander the Great and the lives of the ancient Greeks and Persians as a whole. The artifact has speculative ties to the ancient kings Abdalonymus and Mazaeus. To begin with, this paper will discuss the embellishment and making of the Sarcophagus, the locational and creator's information, and the accuracy of the Wikipedia page on the sarcophagus. Following this, the paper examines any information lacking in the Wikipedia article, facts which could be added and enhanced, and the relations between Persians and Greeks and how they impacted ancient Greek society. Moreover, this paper will examine the Alexander Sarcophagus through the lens of information available to individuals online, more specifically referring to its Wikipedia article. Analyzing the Wikipedia article on the Alexander Sarcophagus shows a view of the artifact which contains many flaws. To begin with, the Alexander Sarcophagus employed a variety of methods in its making and ornamentation. • 12. The Rule Of Antoninus Plus ( C. Ce ) During the rule of Antoninus Plus (c. 138–161 CE), Romans began to favor burials over cremations and the demand for sarcophagi grew rapidly (Kleiner 215). Greek mythology was heavily borrowed upon by the Roman and prominent members of the Roman society wanted to be commemorated in the fashion of Greek heroes. The Romans took the general principles of an Egyptian sarcophagus and added Greek mythology to create a unique piece of Roman art and The Sarcophagus Depicting a Battle between Soldiers and Amazons (Warrior Women) is one such example. The Egyptians were the first to use a sarcophagus to bury and commemorate their dead, and judging from the war– themed artwork on this Roman sarcophagus, it was most likely built to commemorate the death of a great warrior. The Sarcophagus Depicting a Battle between Soldiers and Amazons (Warrior Women) is a massive piece of Roman funerary art made of a hollowed out block of white marble around 140–170 CE. Weighing an impressive 5511.5 pounds, the sarcophagus is 40 ½ x 91 ½ x 50 ½ inches in dimension and is comprised of a lid and casket (The Museum of Fine Arts). The identity of the sculptor is unknown, and considering the careful attention detail on this impressive work of art, it is possible that crafting the sarcophagus was the work of multiple sculptors. Unlike the Egyptians, who preferred gold, the mineral of choice for the Romans was marble. Unlike most Egyptian sarcophagi, which had a portrait of the dead on the lid, the lid of the ... Was he scared because he was a ruler and being a Christian was punishable by death? It is believed that the scenes of judgment were influenced by Bassus career. There are three scenes that display Christ as a young man (revolvy, 2017). It was common for Christian art to display beardless men with short hair during that period. Jesus Christ was killed between 18 – 36 A.D. The four gospels recognize that Jesus died under the order of Pontius Pilate (ncregister, 2013). Art Exhibition : Art Museum Jennifer Vo Professor Worley ARTS 1303 29 December 2014 Art Museum Essay Assignment Among the many artworks I have seen, I decided to discuss about the "Sarcophagus Depicting a Battle between Soldiers and Amazons (Warrior Women)" from the Roman civilization. It was built sometime in between 140 A.D. to 170 A.D and is approximately forty and a half inches in length, ninety–one and a half inches in width, and fifty and a half inches tall in height ("Roman Sarcophagus"). This masterpiece appealed to me because of the unique approach that has been designed to honor the deceased. Many people are familiar with the formatting and inscriptions of a gravestone because it is usually engraved with an individual's full name, birth date, and death date. During the Roman Empire, a sarcophagus, which is a coffin, was widely used to show decorative themes that includes: battle scenes, hunting scenes, weddings, or other memorable episodes from the life of the deceased individual. The most luxurious ones were made from marble surrounded by symbolic sculptures, figures and inscriptions on all four sides ("Sarcophagus"). Another feature that captured my attention was the large quantity of details used to bring out a lifelike aspect of the deceased individual's favorable moments in their life. In this artwork, this sarcophagus was dedicated to a Roman commander. The exterior of the sarcophagus has been well–decorated and carved with exquisite details depicting a battle scene ... • 23. Comparison Between Etruscan And Roman Art Subject 2: Memorializing the Dead in Etruscan and Roman art Both Etruscan and Roman tomb sculpture function to memorialize the departed allowing them to move on from the world of the living and seeks to comfort those who have lost the ones they love. The two societies have differing practices in regards to death and therefore sculptures concerning the subject are somewhat different with a few identifiable similarities. While both societies seek to comfort the living and commemorate the dead this is achieved through different approaches. The Etruscan Sarcophagus with reclining couple from Cerveteri, Italy and the Mummy of Artemidorus from Roman Egypt are two examples of contrasting representations of the dead. When analyzing tomb sculpture one of the main questions is whether the work adapts a retrospective approach (presentation of the deceased as they were in life) or a prospective one (the viewpoint of looking forward to life beyond the grave). While the Etruscan sarcophagus gives a more retrospective memorialization through the depiction of the couple in a state of regularity the Roman Mummy of Artemidorus presents a more prospective approach concerning the deceased through the emphasis of funerary practices. The Sarcophagus with reclining couple from the Banditaccia necropolis, Cerveteri, Italy, ca. 520 BCE portrays the subjects in their ideal state of life. It functions as a prime example of the extravagant Etruscan depiction of death and the deceased. The man and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Herakles and Iolaos are highlighted by the artist's careful attention to make them protrude the greatest, accentuating their impact and overall importance in this sculpture. Every powerful muscle in their bodies is portrayed and given detail in three dimensions. The three–dimensions not only bring these characters closer to reality but also heighten the heroic nature, masculinity, and belligerent attitude of the Greek heroes. Instead of using basic geometric shapes to create works of art, the sculptor chooses to increase the detail in the Sarcophagus by giving everything in the sculpture individual characteristics and traits. • 35. Comparing Two Works Of Art That Featured The God Dionysos I chose to compare and contrast two works of art that featured the god Dionysos. Dionysos was a god of celebration and wine, promoting both the intoxicating power of wine and its social benefits for bringing people together. He was an advocate of peace and a promoter of peaceful civilization. Both The Hope Dionysos and the Triumph of Dionysos and the Seasons Sarcophagus represent why Dionysos was such an important and celebrated figure in mythology, which is why I chose to analyze two works of art that centered on him. My first impression of each piece was of Dionysos as a peaceful, benevolent and joyful figure. I was struck by the calm peacefulness he embodied in The Hope Dionysos and the happiness he shared on the Triumph of Dionysos and the Seasons Sarcophagus. Though there are many elements to compare and contrast, my analysis will show that both pieces are tributes and representations of Dionysos meaning and purpose in Roman art. The Hope Dionysos, displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Greek and Roman Art gallery, depicts Dionysos standing and leaning with one arm on a smaller female figure that is believed to Spes, the personification of hope. He is shown without his usual attributes of a drinking cup or a pinecone–topped staff, and both the hand at his side and the hand resting on Spes and reaching out towards the viewer are empty. Spes, however, holds what appears to be a lotus flower in her hand. This image, with the personification of hope, could have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The author organized the art piece in a realistic, natural way, paying close attention to detail, and carving the art in high relief, allowing people to see the art scenes from a distance. The facial expressions are simple, kind, and the body language is subtle. The lower four scenes represent the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, and Adoration of the Magi. The upper scenes represent Noli me tangere ("touch me not"), the Crucifixion, Presentation in the Temple, and the Coronation of the Virgin (Anonymous).
