Hypnotherapy is therapy that is undertaken with a subject in hypnosis.[citation needed]
The word "hypnosis" (from the Greek hypnos, "sleep") is an abbreviation of James Braid 's (1841)
term "neuro–hypnotism", meaning "sleep of the nervous system".
A person who is hypnotized displays certain unusual characteristics and propensities, compared with
a non–hypnotized subject, most notably hyper–suggestibility, which some authorities have
considered a sine qua non of hypnosis. For example, Clark L. Hull, probably the first major
empirical researcher in the field, wrote,
If a subject after submitting to the hypnotic procedure shows no genuine increase in susceptibility to
any suggestions whatever, there seems no point in calling him ... Show more content on

Whilst Braid differed in offering an explanation of hypnotitc effects that did not rely on supernatual
forces, he credited the methods used in hypnosis to the practice of Mesmerism. Braid said of the
subject:
Hypnotism might therefore not inaptly be designated, Rational Mesmerism, in contra–distinction to
the Transcendental Mesmerism of the Mesmerists.[2]
In their original committee report on hypnotherapy, the British Medical Association (BMA),
likewise, made a point of condemning the occult theories of Mesmerism and sharply distinguishing
them from hypnotism.
The Committee, having completed such investigation of hypnotism as time permitted, have to report
that they have satisfied themselves of the genuineness of the hypnotic state. No phenomena which
have come under their observation, however, lend support to the theory of 'animal magnetism'.
("Report on Hypnotism", British Medical Journal, 1892).
Whereas Mesmerism is a supernatural theory, hypnotism attempted to explain the same phenomena
in terms of psychology and physiology. As Braid puts it, it is a scientific and "psycho–physiological"
(mind–body) discipline.
There is no doubt that some individuals have suffered the ill effects of being involved in stage
hypnotic shows. Stage hypnotists use words like 'magic ' and 'control ' in an attempt to mystify the
effects of hypnosis. In addition, using various tests of hypnotic

Imagine Making A Million Daily Sales In Your Online Marketing
Imagine making a million daily sales in your online marketing simply because of using emotion
trigger words that will get your costumers buying without blinking their eyes. Now picture yourself
persuading them using simple words that will get them to buy from you and even go ahead to
recommend your products to their friends, networks and family members. How can this be done,
you wonder. Well, the strategy is simple and easy to try. It is called psychological hypnotism for
persuasion and has been extensively used by successful crisp copywriters, online marketers such as
Neil Patel and Scot Oldford, companies like Uber and Amazon, charity organizations such as SOS
Children 's Villages and World Vision.

However, if on the other hand you wrote 'Buy snoring aids ', the reader would most probably walk
way since their conscious mind would tend to question why they need to buy snoring aids.
The power of imagination works on everyone from a tender age. Young children are thrilled by fairy
tales and mythical stories because the power of imagination is still at play in their lives. Adults on
the other hand hide themselves in a veneer of reality which can however be unmasked by sneaking
through the critical mind.
How to Use 'Imagine ' in Your Online Marketing Strategy
1. Create mental and enticing pictures into the minds of your customers using the words 'imagine ',
'visualize ', 'picture ' and 'envision '. Suggest to them what how life would be good/easy/enjoyable if
they bought your products. You could also ask customers who have already bought your products
how they are using them and how they changed their lives. Use these narratives to create more
pictures in your copy.
2. Use call to action statements that will leverage the imaginative ability of your customers. If for
example, you are selling a weight loss eBook, your checkout cart could read, "Welcome to the Slim
World". If selling a snoring aid, it could read "To Sound, Fitful Sleep".

There are a lot of people who want to no more about hypnosis for anxiety. Hypnotism is a process
whereby you control the brain of another individual. The human brain is basically made up of two
parts. There is the conscious part and the subconscious part. The conscious part is the one that we
are able to control ourselves. As a result it is very difficult for someone else to gain control over the
conscious part of the brain.
As for the unconscious part of the brain, it is the part that is vulnerable. This is because we cannot
control the unconscious part of our brains. Therefore someone else can gain total control over that
part of your brain. Anxiety and anxiety related conditions account for a huge percentage of

It is estimated that more women suffer from this condition than men. The first stage of hypnosis is
evaluating the anxiety condition. This is done by a hypnotherapist. In this initial stage, the therapist
will be trying to find out the source of the condition. It could be that there is a medical,
physiological or even somatic basis for the existence of the ailment.
There are medical conditions that have this disorder as a side effect. The list includes hypertension,
anemia and hypoglycemia to mention a few. The therapist will also consider whether the condition
is part of some other psychiatric syndrome. This is because the ailment generally merges into most
psychiatric syndromes such as depression.
In such cases the treatment of this condition focuses on the correction of the entire psychiatric
syndrome. There are other more functional causes of this condition. A person can have generalized
anxiety disorder. This is where you experience chronic feelings of fear. There are also panic
disorders and with this type a person has discreet episodes of panic.
There is another type known as mixed syndromes. This ailment can also manifest itself through
other conditions such as phobias, post traumatic stress disorders and obsessive compulsive
disorders. With regards to hypnosis as a treatment of this ailment, there is what is known as
hypnotically induced

Hypnotism In Cat Winter's The Cure For Dreaming
Hypnotism is a wonder that many of us do not understand. In Cat Winter's The Cure For Dreaming,
a young suffragist, Olivia Mead is hypnotized into seeing people's real image. Young adult readers
who like historical fiction/romance would love the dramatic and intensifying parts of the book.
Olivia Mead, a 1900 suffragist from Oregon, has always been told that women are to be housewifes
and should not go after their dreams. She eventually decides to participate in a suffragist movement
and gets in trouble with her father. Her father decides to hire a hypnotist to remove the rebellious
thoughts from her mind so that she would not end up like her mother, who ran off. The hypnotist,
Henri Reverie, gives Olivia the ability to see who she can trust ... Show more content on

I liked how in one scene from the story she described the surroundings as, "Wide expanses of
moonlit grass separated the east and west sides of the street." I also liked how the author used vivid
description to create imagery on the appearances of the characters such as when Henri was
described as being tired and weary immediately before he collapsed. One thing that I didn't like
about the book was how the figures in the book that were deemed untrustworthy were turned into
demons and other creatures. This did not seem very appropriate towards how the story was
presented. The author could have made them glow a different color or done something that wouldn't
have been so gruesome and terrible. This book was very inspirational and interesting to me despite
the demons and vampires.
The setting in the book sets the mood with Olivia Mead at different times and creates imagery
throughout the story. In one scene, it is dark outside and the street is only illuminated by a small
lamppost, and there is a sense of calmness because of how quiet it is. Olivia is sitting with Percy on
the carriage, and they both feel generally comforted and eased by the silence and begin talking about
the book Dracula. The conflict in the book between Olivia and her father eventually pushes her to
become a suffragist and move out. Readers will continue to read this intensifying book as the

Osteopathic Medicine
Osteopathic medicine was first introduced by a doctor named Andre Taylor in Kirksville Missouri
during the 1800's because he noticed that the current medical practices were not promoting a healthy
recovery. ("What is osteopathic," 2017). Osteopathic medicine emphasizes the incorporation of
every system in the body as well as focusing on the "preventive care and allowing the body to heal
without overuse of medication" ("Two kinds of," 2015). Osteopathic physicians (DO's) use a holistic
approach when they are interacting with their patient ("What is osteopathic,"2017). Furthermore,
they look at the person as a whole and incorporate their unique background when treating the patient
("What is osteopathic," 2017).

Hypnotism Is It Magic Or Reality Essay
Hypnotism: Is it Magic or Reality
Most people know what it is. It has been seen on television and in movies, and the saying,
"You are getting very sleepy" has become a widely used phrase. Hypnosis has almost
always been thought of as a magic trick, but recent studies show that it is becoming more popular in
medicine and everyday life.
Hypnosis is defined as a state of mind where the body is more reactive to suggestions than in normal
conditions. When under hypnosis, one narrows his or her attention to one subject or object.
Everyone in the world has experienced hypnosis many times. Some examples are daydreaming and
not realizing other events happening, being engrossed in a book or a movie, or ... Show more

When in a light trance, it is feasible that a patient may not believe he or she was hypnotized. But
under deeper trances, more effects are felt such as feeling mellow and light, or feeling very heavy
(Hunter 3).
The three methods of producing hypnosis are autohypnosis, heterohypnosis, and self–hypnosis.
Autohypnosis occurs when the mind concentrates on something such as a television program or a
good book and causes a sense of extreme focus. When hypnosis is induced by another person, it is
called heterohypnosis. Heterohypnosis is produced by a hypnotist, usually a professional or
someone sufficiently trained, who puts someone into a hypnotic trance using either words,
movements, or touch. The last method is self–hypnosis, which is defined as the process of inducing
hypnosis by oneself (Phelps 12–13).
Even though there are three different defined ways of producing hypnosis, many experts have come
to the conclusion that all hypnosis is self–hypnosis. A hypnotist helps to guide and develop the
hypnotic trance, but the person being hypnotized is initially in control (Alman 8). As Karen Olness,
M.D. from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio explains, "All hypnosis is
self–hypnosis. We all tune things in and out all day long. For example, I can focus on the
conversation we’re having and choose not to notice that I have a slight pain in my right

The Concept Of Phychoanalysis Of Sigmund Freud
The concept of psychoanalysis was first introduced under Sigmund Freud, who came up with his
own theory of the psychoanalytic approach in Vienna in the late 1800s. He was previously a
neurologist looking for a treatment for neuroticism and hysteria. While searching for this and also
being employed at a Children's hospital, he came to the realization that there were many mental
issues that were not all in the conscious mind due to witnessing aphasic children with no apparent
cause for their symptoms (Krull & Kulikov, 2006). This is when he began to write on the subject. In
1885, Freud began studying with Jean–Martin Charcot in Paris. Charcot centered his study primarily
on hysteria, anesthesia, paralyses, and hypnotism to attempt to alleviate these internal issues. Freud
and Josef Breuer began to write about hysterical symptoms and his theories on them which are
characterized as the beginning of psychoanalysis. Josef Breuer is most famously known for his case
studies on "Anna O", a woman who experienced symptoms such as: hallucinations, speech
problems, partial paralysis, and visual disturbances(Krull & Kulikov, 2006). Breuer diagnosed her
with hysteria, but Freud had a different idea. He believed that at the core of her hysteria symptoms
were repressed memories within her childhood, mostly with sexual associations. In 1896, Freud
published a "seduction theory" which suggested that hysterical systems stem from excitations in
adolescence, such as sexual abuse that was

Narrative Essay: A Night With A Hypnotist
It was a stark night with an unpleasant breeze. The full moon was covered with gloomy clouds and
there was nothing on the sky that could brighten the quiet and peaceful town. Owls hooted faintly
and foggy weather made the mood more miserable. The only visible was an isolated black hut with a
shining light coming from the hut. A delicate smell of scent from the hut drifted out towered the
moist pathway. When the time reached 12'o clock, the chime rang twelve times. Inside the hut, there
was the shadow of a human and he was laughing loudly. The person in the hut was Mike. He was a

Shor Theory Of Hypnosis
Hypnosis, also known as hypnotherapy or hypnotic suggestion, consists of a state of trance in which
a center of attention and a more intense concentration is experienced. Hypnosis is usually performed
with the help of a therapist who uses verbal repetition and mental images. When a person is under
the effects of hypnosis, they usually feel calm and relaxed, and are more willing to receive
suggestions. Hypnosis can be used to help people control unwanted behaviors or to help them cope
better with anxiety or pain. Contrary to what many people believe, although people will be more
willing to receive suggestions during hypnosis, they will not lose control of their behavior.
How does hypnosis arise? According to Ronald E. Shor, from ancient times, men of the most diverse
cultures practiced hypnotic and suggestive phenomena for the healing of the faith and for magical–
religious and other purposes. Shor explains that, in spite of that, it was during the Age of Ultra–
Enlightenment in the late eighteenth century, when a healing physicist of the faith, Franz Anton ...

Comparing Sigmund Freud's Life And Breuer
While Freud was a medical student he was introduced to Josef Breuer through physiologist Ernst
Brucke. Josef Breuer eventually became friends with Freud and later on introduced Freud to
Wilhelm Fliess. Fliess and Breuer were two influential individuals in Freud's life and Breuer greatly
influenced the development of psychoanalysis. Josef Breuer was a Viennese physician who used
hypnotism to treat hysteria and eventually Freud also used hypnosis to treat his own patients which
helped him form his ideas on unconscious desires. "Freud adopted 'Breuer's cathartic method' in the
treatment of his own patients and it was here that he developed his ideas about the role of
unconscious conflicts in hysteria and other forms of neurosis in great depth" ... Show more content

A passing Christian knocked his cap off while telling him to get out of the way and expressing how
much he disliked Jews. Instead of standing up to the Christian, Freud's father just moved out of the
way and retrieved his cap from the ground. After hearing this story Freud was greatly affected
because he lost confidence in his father as a role model. Freud later based his Oedipus Complex
theory off of Sophocles's play "Oedipus the King." The story was similar to his father's story only in
the play when the main character is told to move off the road by the king the character instead
retaliates and murders the king. The Oedipus Complex is a child's desire for sexual involvement
with either the mother or the father depending on the child's gender followed by rivalry with the
parent of the same sex (Breger, 2012). The Oedipal theory somewhat combines Freud's longing for
his mother's attention and his contempt for his father. Freud did not want to apply his patient's
traumatic experiences to himself so instead he applied his own experiences to his patients through

The first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of hypnosis is usually a magician convincing a
person to act like a chicken, however, hypnosis is actually an approach that doctors can use to treat
pain, depression, anxiety, phobias, and more. Hypnosis is a state in which a person appears to be
under a trance and is extremely concentrated (Brandt). It is not a new concept. In fact, hypnosis has
been used by the ancient Egyptians over 2,000 years ago (healing power). In the 1770s, the Austrian
physician Franz Anton Mesmer began to study hypnosis scientifically. More recently, it was used
during World War I and World War II to treat soldiers who experienced post–traumatic stress

It can be used to make patients less nervous before a surgery and can comfort them during recovery.
It can also be used to combat the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation, or a chronic illness (World
Book). Hypnosis can also help the 25% of Americans who avoid and fear the dentist. After a five
minute hypnosis session, patients can be relaxed enough to receive novocaine and the treatment they
need inexpensively and without medication (healing power). Finally, hypnosis can help burn
victims. These people must have their dead skin removed every day for up to a few months. The
process is so painful that most patients must be given powerful painkillers that can be addictive and
can cause confusion, gastrointestinal problems, and breathing trouble. Hypnosis can relax the patient
and can allow them to go through the treatment without experiencing pain. The hypnosis session is
inexpensive and does not require addictive medication (healing power). Despite the evidence that
supports the fact that hypnosis is a legitimate approach to treating conditions, many graduate
schools have little hypnosis training in their psychology programs (Smith). This needs to change so
that more people can become trained hypnotists so the approach can become more widespread. As
previously stated, it would benefit hospitals financially and patients physically. It is free, can treat a
variety of conditions, has no side effects, and is not addictive. Dr. Spiegel believes that it could even
be used in place of addictive opiates. More time and money must be put into research on hypnosis
and its practice as it could save hospitals and patients money in the long run and could help a variety
of patients heal

Analysis Of The Poem ' The Carnival '
Using the carnival as a background is appropriate because it is a time of celebration when
everything is in chaos and people have lost their self–control. The carnival may be a symbol of
Montresor's own madness and the crazy thoughts in his head. The carnival usually indicates joyful
social interaction but it is distorted by Montresor. Montresor's reference to the bones and vaults of
his family foreshadow the story's descent into the underworld. The underground travels of the two
men are a metaphor for their trip to hell. The carnival is essentially for the living but Montresor
takes it into the vaults underground, to the realm of the dead and the satanic. The setting Poe chose
for the story adds to the terror. Most of the events of the story runs in dark, damp tunnels piled with
the bones of dead people. By taking Fortunato into the vaults, Montresor cuts him off from help.
The two characters are underground and isolated. Taking Fortunato to the catacombs means a
descent into hell. The underground catacomb suggests confinement. This is called the "Gothic
Interior." Poe writes: At the most remote end of the crypt there appeared another less spacious. Its
walls had been lined with human remains piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great
catacombs of Paris. Three sides of this interior crypt were still ornamented in this manner. From the
fourth the bones had been thrown down, and lay promiscuously upon the earth, forming at one point
a mound of some size.

Is Hypnosis Fake
centuries
Hypnosis essay
What I think about Hypnosis is that it is fake. These are the reasons why I think that Hypnosis is
fake. One reason is that if someone let's just say, tells you to act like a chicken while they
"hypnotize" you, you are probably not going to act like a chicken, but there is a chance that you
could act like a chicken. One of the reasons I think that hypnosis is fake is because like there is
proof that is real buts like what if behind the scenes they tell each other what they are going to say
and stuff and then they say bark like a dog so the person just barks like a dog. But if it was real
because there are ways like with people who smoke they went to some place and got hypnotized and

Also, it's a fact that not everyone is susceptible to hypnosis. Some people seem to possess a trait
called "hypnotizability" that, like other traits, varies greatly among individuals. To be successfully
hypnotized, a person must want to undergo the process voluntarily and also possess at least a
moderate degree of hypnotizability. Even highly hypnotizable people may not benefit from
hypnotherapy, and a single session of hypnosis usually does not produce lasting results. Often, a
person will have to undergo a series of hypnotic procedures to reinforce whatever constructive
suggestions may be given. The most frequent clinical uses of hypnosis include: breaking bad habits,
overcoming insomnia, recalling forgotten experiences, and as an anesthetic for managing pain. You
can easily test the benefits of self–hypnosis. Simply sit or lie down and get comfortable in a quiet
setting. Then, close your eyes and take in a few deep breaths, slowly, in and out. This places many
people into a mild trance and a state of comfortable relaxation. In this state, say some optimistic

Sigmund Freud, Psychoanalysis and the impact on 20th Century Ego Psychology
Meghan Laubengeyer
Temple University
Psychologist, psychoanalyst, doctor of medicine, and author, Sigmund Freud's contributions to the
world of science and psychology were far from limited. The self and widely regarded scientist was
born in Friedberg in 1856 where he lived before moving to Vienna, Germany, where he would later
produce founding revelations at the birth of psychology as a science. From his beginnings, Freud
focused on psychopathology and the conscious mind (Jones, 1949). The renowned "Father of
Psychoanalysis" created a pathway and a foundation for psychology, influencing the world of
psychology from its birth to modern day practice. Freud's delve into the unconscious, dreams,
psychosexual development, and the id, ego, and super–ego, are just a limited number of his studies
that greatly influenced numerous psychologists and theories of modern psychology. One of his
earliest practices and most accredited work dealt with psychoanalysis specifically. Though this
practice is seldom used in modern psychology in the treatment of psychological disorders, it
assuredly carried great influence in the development of modern practices of psychological theories.
Freud's creation of psychoanalysis exceeded his professional career, influencing modern
psychologists and theories, one specifically being ego psychology, that was founded in the mid 20th
century of modern

Brave New World Vs Reality Essay
Brave New World vs. Reality
In many cases when you read a novel you may find comparisons between the "fictional"
society and your realistic one. The author may consciously or unconsciously create similarities
between these two worlds. The novelist can foresee the future and write according to this vision. In
Brave New World, Adlous Huxley envisions the future of our society and the dangerous direction it
is headed in.
Brave New World is greatly dependant upon soma, as in our world where prescribed drugs and drug
abuse are prominent. This is evident when Bernard and Lenina return from the Savage Reservation.
Lenina is devastated from her experiences, so decides to take soma. It illustrates how like our world

Living without the drugs seem unimaginable and frightening. If our world does not stop this
dangerous overuse of drugs we will see ourselves evolve into the frightening direction of Brave
New World and will be unable to stop it.
Physical and mental controlling (hypnopaedia) is used to teach moral lessons in Brave New World,
our world uses hypnotism for the same purposes. The incident with Ruben Rabinovich illustrates
how our world is similar to Brave New World. Ruben Rabinovivch was a young boy who fell asleep
with the radio on listening to a professor give a lecture. When he awoke the next morning he could
recite the facts he heard but, he did not know what they meant. This is similar to our world because
people use tapes to help them learn and memorize facts and speeches.
In Brave New World their society is taught moral lessons and slogans by hypnopaedia. For example
"a gramme is better than a damn." Today we are forced into believing propaganda and
advertisements. We are bombarded with ads and pressure to buy certain things, or believe what
people tell us. In Brave New World if they do not follow propaganda they are considered abnormal,
and are forced out of society.
When we are young children we are soothed from our crying by music and the voices of our parents.
We are told we are loved and are spoken to. Throughout our lives we are

Hypnotism: An Analysis Of The Subconscious Mind
The brain is built in a very special way and so is the subconscious mind. Our awareness and thought
processes form the foundation of the human spirit and the human character and this information is
weaved into us from young. Freud called this the Id, the Ego and the Superego of our brains, and
each of them has a specific function in determining needs, morality, character and mindset. The
formative years is when this is most important, because when we are an adult and have the mental
faculties of rational thought and critical thinking well in place, we are better able to siphon off the
stimuli of the world, crunch them into raw data and apply them to our brains and accompanying
consciousness substructure.
This means that we can judge and we can think. Hypnotism seeks to go into the subconscious and
alter the states of the mind and make us do things. Nevertheless, there is one inherent flaw in this
application of the age old technology of hypnotism, is the fact the subconscious is a direct
representation of the conscious mind's filtering techniques. Which means that if we are aware of the
inherent dangers of something, we translate that into data and inject it into our subconscious mind,
which then will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Induction And Hypnotic Induction
Prior to going directly to the hypnotic induction techniques, it is necessary to know the meaning of
the word "induction", and its usage and application in the field of hypnotism; therefore, one
definition was chosen how this word is used in psychology and hypnotism. The Cambridge
Dictionary of Psychology (Matsumoto, 2009) defines the word "induction" as "A form of logical
reasoning in which general principles are inferred from multiple observation", But in term of
psychology it defines the word as "Any act or process of bringing about a change, as of inducing a
person into the military, putting someone into a hypnotic state, or producing and electrical current in
a wire".

One type of the hypnotic induction is called "rapid induction" by which instructions are given within

are (West 2014): four step induction, eye–fixation technique, arm–drop technique, progressive
relaxation technique, and imagery techniques. In contrast, Dahl (1994: 82) says that there are two
types of hypnotic inductions' techniques – authoritarian induction and permissive induction style. He
explains that authoritarian induction technique is a powerful, strong, and commanding style, in

The Conscious Mind Analysis
Throughout the opening examples presented in Miller's essay, the conscious mind is typically
observed inadvertently, usually as a byproduct of attempting socioeconomic and political gains and
typically through some form of pseudoscience as its medium. However, as the essay progresses–and
the time frame the examples take place within advances–the conscious mind begins to be observed
both intentionally and in ways more closely resembling the principles of modern science. For
instance, Braid's investigations of hypnotic phenomena failed to thoroughly recognize the role of
consciousness in the results of his experimentation. Rather, the concept of such a role, "the condition
of the patient's nervous system," (14), in the causing of the hypnotic ... Show more content on

Mesmer's work was severely clouded by his subjective beliefs, which make his studies more of
exercises in self indulgence than scientific process. Much of the same can be observed for the works
of Elliotson, Baron Dupotet and Braid, as they also succumbed to desire for personal gain from their
work–building and maintaining popular private practices despite their scientific faults, with
Elliotson specifically being described as enjoying "a prosperous professional life with a wide circle
of admiring and affectionate friends," (12). It should be noted, though, that their respective work did
contribute as portions of a base for future scientists to work from. Their successors, the likes of
Carpenter, Laycock and Hall, were able to find pieces of the work that could be investigated–such as
the state of individuals while experiencing a trance–and develop those aspects into more scientific
queries. Thus the evolution of the study of consciousness can be observed in the essay. The
development over time of theories of consciousness is similar to the development of theoretically
accepted models of the atom. From Dalton's "Billiard Ball" model, to Rutherford's nucleus as a
result of his gold foil experiments, to Schrödinger's electron cloud model and beyond, several
different scientists built upon each others' work to develop the models used and accepted

Who Is To Blame For The Mesmerizer
Marissa Muñoz Tom Cody English 1A #6357 September 1, 2014 Mark Twain: "The Mesmerizer"
Reflecting on the past can lead to many questions and different feelings in the present. In "The
Mesmerizer" by Mark Twain, Twain confesses the truth behind an event that happened in his teen
years. When Twain confesses the truth to his mother thirty–five years later, she does not believe
him. Instead, she believes the lies that were fed to her as she watched her son be "hypnotized" by
Simmons, the Mesmerizer. This leads to the question, "Who is to blame?" By reflecting on Twains
past, the Mesmerizer, Twain, and the people are all to blame by partaking in the deception of others.

The people are guilty for taking pleasure in the pain of others and for being gullible. Twain notes
that when the mesmerizer called up the audience to stick pins in Hicks and Twain, "the ladies and
gentlemen always complied eagerly" (Twain, 3). The people were happy to inflict pain into the arms
of the subject. Being grown adults they should have realized, although Hicks and Twain seemed to
be hypnotized, that there was still going to be consequences to sticking the pins in. The pin would
leave holes in the arms and pain would occur after the hypnotism was over. Rather than thinking
about the consequences of purposefully sticking pins into someone's body, they took pleasure in
inflicting pain. In reality, even though Twain and Simmons were the ones conning the people, there

Notes On Hypnosis : Hypnosis
UF217: Hypnosis
Everyone knows that if you really want to mesmerize someone, you'd better have a audacious
showbiz tuxedo and a pretty dark black Van Dyke goatee. And a cape, and a top hat, probably. Also
a "mesmerizing" spiral coin, or a pendulous pocket watch. "YOU ARE GETTING VERY SLEEPY."
Actually it turns out there's something to hypnosis, but there's two avenues: there is the "stage
hypnotism" that showmen and side–show acts perform, which is horseshit, then there's the "might be
something to it" variety of hypnotherapeutic "hyper–awareness." Thing about "real" hypnotism is
we do it every day.
But let's start with stage hypnotism–the "you are now under my spell" variety. The main thing about
this kind of "act" is that the participant is 100% just onboard for the spiel. The "magician" literally
just tells the participant to cluck like a chicken, and the participant will because he was told to, and
now he's part of a show, and who is he to let everyone down? In stage hypnotism, there's no
difference between pretending you magically influenced someone's actions vs just saying "do this
thing" and they comply. Compliance is based on the simple mechanism that no one want's to be the
spoil–sport. You get called up to be on stage, and now everyone is watching, and the entire audience
(and you) have shared expectation that you'll do what you're told. And so, you do.
It's a weird form of like...group–think, or public compliance. Sounds a little rapey, but it's all fun and

Some examples of opioid medications are: oxycodone, fentanyl, morphine, and meperidine (Hart
2013). Not all opioids are used for pain, but this paper will focus on those that are currently used for
pain in the United States. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical treatment for multiple issues,
and is characterized by needles being strategically inserted into pressure points on the body to
relieve symptoms. This is believed to reset you qi or life force within your body. This practice is
carried out by acupuncturists all over the world. In western medicine, while we don't know the exact
mechanism of action, it is thought to increase blood flow and raise natural painkiller levels in the
body. This rise in natural painkillers and increased blood flow are the major benefits of acupuncture.
The risks are very few, there is a very limited chance of organ damage, infection, or soreness after a
treatment (Mayo Clinic 2012). Massage is a very common form of therapy for all sorts of things,
from stress to chronic pain. There have been numerous studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of
massage in helping to manage patients' pain while keeping them off medication. The benefit of this
type of treatment is pain relief through manipulation of the body. The mechanism of action is, once
again, unknown, but it is thought to be related to stimulation of muscles and the blood flow being
increased. There are

Misconceptions Of Hypnotism
When people hear the word "hypnotism", most of them think that it is somewhat like a trick, a

hypnotize them. Some of them think that a person who hypnotize uses a pendulum–like object that
catches the attention of his victim. Lots of incidents were recorded that hypnotism is said to be used
in robbery. Stories tell that strangers talk to their victims and look at their eyes. They will tell
something to their victims until they become unaware of the things around them, and when they
regain consciousness, they will notice that something's missing from them. This study will help its

August Strindberg's Personality through Hypnotism in Miss Julie
In the preface of the "brutal... cynical... heartless drama" (Strindberg 57), Miss Julie, August
Strindberg gives an in depth analysis of his play and himself. Fashioning his characters as "souls"
(Strindberg 91), Strindberg permits mobility in personal development and reflects the complexity of
the self. Through his drawing of the characters to be "swift and vacillating" (Strindberg 82),
Strindberg reflects the temperament during the late 1800s, incorporating an "urgently hysterical"
(Strindberg 91) atmosphere. During this time period, hysteria was respective to females, and ...

The preface demonstrates Strindberg's take on hysteria (alike how the character drawing can be used
to reflect Strindberg's views on psyche) as an influx of "lower, unreliable instruments of thought
which we call feelings" (Strindberg 88). Although this waking suggestion brings a violent end to the
play, Strindberg's use of hypnosis can instead be seen as a reflection of his desperation and
hopelessness regarding the truth of life.
Each character is unique in the play, avoiding "simple stage characters... one [which] is stupid.. one
brutal... one jealous..." (Strindberg 59). Strindberg avoids the "idiotically mathematical" (Strindberg
57) ideology where the "big eat the small" (Strindberg 57), instead employing a variety of characters
and plot, which mirror the irregularity of everyday life. Strindberg adds minute details to each
character, justifying his premise that "[any] event in real life... springs generally from a whole series
of motives" (Strindberg 58). Several of Miss Julie's motives are attributed to her rearing as "her
father 's mistaken upbringing of the girl" (Strindberg 58). Strindberg also corroborates Miss Julie's
persona with "her own nature... degenerate brain" (Strindberg 58), which decides her fate to imitate
that of degenerate offspring to "succumb [in the end], either because they are

in his/her little world, yet somehow they make you feel like you have known them your entire life
through the way they make you smile, laugh, and sometimes even cry. How is this possible, you
ask? Could it be through virtual reality, perhaps even through hypnotism? The answer lies within
stories. Authors are able to naturally coax readers into the minds of characters by using point–of–

He is only referred to by his physical characteristics from the first meeting. In the middle of the
story, when the cavalry scout happens upon another person, the first thing he notices is how his face
is covered with "several weeks' growth of ginger–colored beard" (London 42). London then goes on
to give us a little bit more detail, "The eyes were blue and wide apart, with laughter–wrinkles in the
corners" (42). Due to the unique limited–omniscient point–of–view, not much is revealed about any
of the other characters in the story, not even the antagonist who plays an enormous role. This point–
of–view reveals practically nothing about this vital character including his name, background, etc.
All in all, it is evident that point–of–view greatly affects the characterization of the ginger–bearded
man.
The characterization of the cavalry scout and the ginger–bearded man is greatly influenced by the
limited–omniscient point–of–view of the short story "War", by Jack London. Point–of–view, or
perspective, is an important tool applied by authors for use in literature, but it pertains to more than
just books. Perspective is crucial in order for us to understand others, to not only step into their
shoes, but to walk around in them as well. If humans can learn to take advantage of the powerful

Psychological Hypnosis
Throughout many year, hypnosis has evolved using a variety of techniques. Most of the techniques
were commonly used to perform clinical methods and principles. Psychologists had discovered the
aristocracy and medical theories of hypnosis by introducing it into the course for curing psychiatric
and physical illnesses. As the phenomena transforms throughout centuries, the origin of its term
follows. Medical doctors in France have embraced the new term "hypnotism" by the late 1800s,

Consequently psychotherapy for medicinal purposes have not succeeded in accomplishing
acceptance to this day. The correlation towards this statement is the explanation that practitioners
refrain from looking into the theoretical understanding that psychological hypnosis is nothing other
than a natural process, which in this case, is often perceived to be impossible for students to learn
and to demonstrate the psychological changes thoroughly in order to practice and engage the skilful
needs to interpret a hypnotist. "The first half of the 20th century ingrained hypnosis in the public
perception as a form of mind control, and the tool of spiritual seekers looking for past lives
(Upshaw, 2006)." Oftentimes, surgeons would use hypnosis as a form of surgical anaesthetics to
alter the patient into the desired trance. This frequent treatment occurred without the use of
medicinal anaesthesia by clinicians to relieve the pain before undergoing a surgical procedure.
Along the previous years, the theory of hypnosis has made drastic changes in prospect, however the

When you're awake, your conscious mind works to evaluate a lot of your thoughts, make decisions
and put certain ideas into action. It also processes new information and relays it to the subconscious
mind. The subconscious mind takes care of all the things you do automatically, like breathing. The
subconscious mind processes the physical information your body receives and actually lets you
solve problems, create conversation and put together plans and ideas. But when you're asleep, the
conscious mind gets out of the way, and your subconscious has free reign. Psychiatrists theorize that
the deep relaxation and focusing exercises of hypnotism work to calm and subdue the conscious
mind so that it takes a less active role in your thinking process. In this state, you're still aware of
what's going on, but your conscious mind takes a backseat to your subconscious mind. Effectively,
this allows you and the hypnotist to work directly with the subconscious. It provides an especially
convincing explanation for the playfulness and uninhibitedness of hypnotic subjects. The conscious
mind is the main inhibitive component in your makeup –– it's in charge of putting on the brakes ––
while the subconscious mind is the seat of imagination and impulse. When your subconscious mind
is in control, you feel much freer and may be more creative. Your conscious mind doesn't have to
filter through everything. (Harris, 2010)

Insane Asylum In The 1800s

What was it like to live in an insane asylum in the 1800's?
The first colonists blamed mental illness on witchcraft and demonic possession. The mentally ill
were often imprisoned or sent to poorhouses. If they didn't go to one of those they were left
untreated at their home. Conditions in the prisons were awful. In 1841, a lady named Dorothea Dix
volunteered to teach a Sunday–school class for the female inmates. She was outraged with the
conditions of the prisons that she witnessed. Dix then went on to be a renowned advocate for the
mentally ill. She urged more humane treatment–based care than what was given to the mentally ill in

those. Also, if women got to old the husband could have her put in a hospital and take a younger
wife. Once a woman was committed, it was as if she died, an obituary was published, usually. A
landlord could have a person committed for not paying rent. A boss could have an employee

Sigmund Freud's Theory Of Hypnotism
Sigmund Freud is one of the most influential psychologists. He was born in Freiberg, Moravia in
1856, and moved to Vienna with his family at the age of four. He continued to work in Vienna for
most of his life. Freud had always considered himself to be, above all, a scientist. He was always
seeking to further human knowledge. In 1873, Freud enrolled at the medical school at the University
of Vienna, where he concentrated his studies on biology. During his time at the University, Freud did
research in physiology under German scientist Ernst Brücke, the director of the Physiology Lab at
the University. Sigmund Freud earned his degree in medicine in 1881. In 1886, shortly after his
marriage, he set up a private practice for the treatment of physiological disorders. This practice was
where Freud gathered clinical material that he later based his theories and techniques upon. ... Show

symptoms, the symptoms often became less intense. As Freud worked with Breuer, he developed a
theory that many mental illnesses originated in a traumatic past event. Freud had patients recall the
experience to bring it to consciousness, then confront the event intellectually and emotionally. This
would get rid of the underlying causes of a mental illness. Freud and Breuer published their findings

Use Of Hypnosis Used For A Very Long Time
Hypnosis has been in use for a very long time, but we tend to think about its use for healing or
therapeutic purposes as a recent development. In fact, an article, A Brief
History of Hypnosis, stated "Ancient Chinese, Hindu, and Egyptian texts all mention healing
procedures that are hypnotic inductions by any other name".For something so old, one would think
we would have a better understanding of it. Modern hypnosis got a lot from Franz Mesmer (1734–
1815), an Austrian physician, who worked with psychiatric patients. Because of him, hypnosis was
known as "mesmerism". He used the "mesmeric pass", a very complex and long set of hand

Argumentative Essay On Hypnotism
Hypnotism is defined as a state of consciousness where a person loses power over their actions.
Hypnosis is used in multiple kinds of therapy. In psychotherapy, it can be used to treat conditions
more effectively. When hypnosis is used on top of psychotherapy to treat disorders such as obesity,
insomnia, anxiety, and hypertension, it is more effective than doing just therapy in over half of the
cases. But, it isn't known how effective hypnosis is for disorders such as dermatological issues or
irritable bowel syndrome. (Soundview Prep). Hypnosis has so far been shown as effective in easing
pain. This includes the extreme pains of cancer, labor, bone marrow aspirations, and burn–wound
debridement (Soundview Prep). Hypnotism has also been used ... Show more content on

There are three major theories in hypnotism. One is that hypnotizability is affected by a person's
desire to be hypnotized. If someone wants to be hypnotized by the person, then they will be more
likely to be hypnotized. The second is that hypnotizability is affected by how suggestible someone
is. If they are open to suggestions then they will be more likely to be hypnotized. The third is that
hypnotism is another state of consciousness– they are not conscious and are blindly just following
any request made to them. These are the three main theories that are the most meaningful. Evidence
has shown that responsiveness to hypnosis may be hereditary. A study shows that identical twins are
more likely than fraternal twins to have similar levels of hypnotizability. All research shows that
personality characteristics do not affect hypnotizability. These include gullibility, aggressiveness or
passiveness, and imagination. But, the only trait so far known to link to hypnotizability is how easily
someone is absorbed by leisurely activities such as listening to

How Did Elie Wiesel Survive After The Holocaust
Holocaust Experiences
Elie Wiesel experienced 2 years of events that nothing will be able to amount to. After the
deportation of his village, he survived through 4 concentration camps in a year. The camps were
Auschwitz, Buna, Buchenwald, and Gleiwitz. His father died in Buchenwald in January 1945 and
Wiesel had to survive through the rest of the Holocaust with no motivation. After the Holocaust, he
spent a couple of years in a French orphanage.
Becoming an Author
Elie Wiesel is currently the author of 36 books which all deal with Judaism, the Holocaust, and the
responsibility of all people to fight hatred, racism, and genocide. After the Holocaust, Wiesel
became involved in journalistic work for a French newspaper called "L'arche". Francois

Debate Topics

  • 1. Debate Topics Hypnotherapy is therapy that is undertaken with a subject in hypnosis.[citation needed] The word "hypnosis" (from the Greek hypnos, "sleep") is an abbreviation of James Braid 's (1841) term "neuro–hypnotism", meaning "sleep of the nervous system". A person who is hypnotized displays certain unusual characteristics and propensities, compared with a non–hypnotized subject, most notably hyper–suggestibility, which some authorities have considered a sine qua non of hypnosis. For example, Clark L. Hull, probably the first major empirical researcher in the field, wrote, If a subject after submitting to the hypnotic procedure shows no genuine increase in susceptibility to any suggestions whatever, there seems no point in calling him ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whilst Braid differed in offering an explanation of hypnotitc effects that did not rely on supernatual forces, he credited the methods used in hypnosis to the practice of Mesmerism. Braid said of the subject: Hypnotism might therefore not inaptly be designated, Rational Mesmerism, in contra–distinction to the Transcendental Mesmerism of the Mesmerists.[2] In their original committee report on hypnotherapy, the British Medical Association (BMA), likewise, made a point of condemning the occult theories of Mesmerism and sharply distinguishing them from hypnotism. The Committee, having completed such investigation of hypnotism as time permitted, have to report that they have satisfied themselves of the genuineness of the hypnotic state. No phenomena which have come under their observation, however, lend support to the theory of 'animal magnetism'. ("Report on Hypnotism", British Medical Journal, 1892). Whereas Mesmerism is a supernatural theory, hypnotism attempted to explain the same phenomena in terms of psychology and physiology. As Braid puts it, it is a scientific and "psycho–physiological" (mind–body) discipline. There is no doubt that some individuals have suffered the ill effects of being involved in stage hypnotic shows. Stage hypnotists use words like 'magic ' and 'control ' in an attempt to mystify the effects of hypnosis. In addition, using various tests of hypnotic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Imagine Making A Million Daily Sales In Your Online Marketing Imagine making a million daily sales in your online marketing simply because of using emotion trigger words that will get your costumers buying without blinking their eyes. Now picture yourself persuading them using simple words that will get them to buy from you and even go ahead to recommend your products to their friends, networks and family members. How can this be done, you wonder. Well, the strategy is simple and easy to try. It is called psychological hypnotism for persuasion and has been extensively used by successful crisp copywriters, online marketers such as Neil Patel and Scot Oldford, companies like Uber and Amazon, charity organizations such as SOS Children 's Villages and World Vision. However, if on the other hand you wrote 'Buy snoring aids ', the reader would most probably walk way since their conscious mind would tend to question why they need to buy snoring aids. The power of imagination works on everyone from a tender age. Young children are thrilled by fairy tales and mythical stories because the power of imagination is still at play in their lives. Adults on the other hand hide themselves in a veneer of reality which can however be unmasked by sneaking through the critical mind. How to Use 'Imagine ' in Your Online Marketing Strategy 1. Create mental and enticing pictures into the minds of your customers using the words 'imagine ', 'visualize ', 'picture ' and 'envision '. Suggest to them what how life would be good/easy/enjoyable if they bought your products. You could also ask customers who have already bought your products how they are using them and how they changed their lives. Use these narratives to create more pictures in your copy. 2. Use call to action statements that will leverage the imaginative ability of your customers. If for example, you are selling a weight loss eBook, your checkout cart could read, "Welcome to the Slim World". If selling a snoring aid, it could read "To Sound, Fitful Sleep". • 9. Hypnotism Research Paper There are a lot of people who want to no more about hypnosis for anxiety. Hypnotism is a process whereby you control the brain of another individual. The human brain is basically made up of two parts. There is the conscious part and the subconscious part. The conscious part is the one that we are able to control ourselves. As a result it is very difficult for someone else to gain control over the conscious part of the brain. As for the unconscious part of the brain, it is the part that is vulnerable. This is because we cannot control the unconscious part of our brains. Therefore someone else can gain total control over that part of your brain. Anxiety and anxiety related conditions account for a huge percentage of complaints to psychiatrists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is estimated that more women suffer from this condition than men. The first stage of hypnosis is evaluating the anxiety condition. This is done by a hypnotherapist. In this initial stage, the therapist will be trying to find out the source of the condition. It could be that there is a medical, physiological or even somatic basis for the existence of the ailment. There are medical conditions that have this disorder as a side effect. The list includes hypertension, anemia and hypoglycemia to mention a few. The therapist will also consider whether the condition is part of some other psychiatric syndrome. This is because the ailment generally merges into most psychiatric syndromes such as depression. In such cases the treatment of this condition focuses on the correction of the entire psychiatric syndrome. There are other more functional causes of this condition. A person can have generalized anxiety disorder. This is where you experience chronic feelings of fear. There are also panic disorders and with this type a person has discreet episodes of panic. There is another type known as mixed syndromes. This ailment can also manifest itself through other conditions such as phobias, post traumatic stress disorders and obsessive compulsive disorders. With regards to hypnosis as a treatment of this ailment, there is what is known as hypnotically induced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Hypnotism In Cat Winter's The Cure For Dreaming Hypnotism is a wonder that many of us do not understand. In Cat Winter's The Cure For Dreaming, a young suffragist, Olivia Mead is hypnotized into seeing people's real image. Young adult readers who like historical fiction/romance would love the dramatic and intensifying parts of the book. Olivia Mead, a 1900 suffragist from Oregon, has always been told that women are to be housewifes and should not go after their dreams. She eventually decides to participate in a suffragist movement and gets in trouble with her father. Her father decides to hire a hypnotist to remove the rebellious thoughts from her mind so that she would not end up like her mother, who ran off. The hypnotist, Henri Reverie, gives Olivia the ability to see who she can trust ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I liked how in one scene from the story she described the surroundings as, "Wide expanses of moonlit grass separated the east and west sides of the street." I also liked how the author used vivid description to create imagery on the appearances of the characters such as when Henri was described as being tired and weary immediately before he collapsed. One thing that I didn't like about the book was how the figures in the book that were deemed untrustworthy were turned into demons and other creatures. This did not seem very appropriate towards how the story was presented. The author could have made them glow a different color or done something that wouldn't have been so gruesome and terrible. This book was very inspirational and interesting to me despite the demons and vampires. The setting in the book sets the mood with Olivia Mead at different times and creates imagery throughout the story. In one scene, it is dark outside and the street is only illuminated by a small lamppost, and there is a sense of calmness because of how quiet it is. Olivia is sitting with Percy on the carriage, and they both feel generally comforted and eased by the silence and begin talking about the book Dracula. The conflict in the book between Olivia and her father eventually pushes her to become a suffragist and move out. Readers will continue to read this intensifying book as the conflict ... • 25. Hypnotism Is It Magic Or Reality Essay Hypnotism: Is it Magic or Reality Most people know what it is. It has been seen on television and in movies, and the saying, "You are getting very sleepy" has become a widely used phrase. Hypnosis has almost always been thought of as a magic trick, but recent studies show that it is becoming more popular in medicine and everyday life. Hypnosis is defined as a state of mind where the body is more reactive to suggestions than in normal conditions. When under hypnosis, one narrows his or her attention to one subject or object. Everyone in the world has experienced hypnosis many times. Some examples are daydreaming and not realizing other events happening, being engrossed in a book or a movie, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When in a light trance, it is feasible that a patient may not believe he or she was hypnotized. But under deeper trances, more effects are felt such as feeling mellow and light, or feeling very heavy (Hunter 3). The three methods of producing hypnosis are autohypnosis, heterohypnosis, and self–hypnosis. Autohypnosis occurs when the mind concentrates on something such as a television program or a good book and causes a sense of extreme focus. When hypnosis is induced by another person, it is called heterohypnosis. Heterohypnosis is produced by a hypnotist, usually a professional or someone sufficiently trained, who puts someone into a hypnotic trance using either words, movements, or touch. The last method is self–hypnosis, which is defined as the process of inducing hypnosis by oneself (Phelps 12–13). Even though there are three different defined ways of producing hypnosis, many experts have come to the conclusion that all hypnosis is self–hypnosis. A hypnotist helps to guide and develop the hypnotic trance, but the person being hypnotized is initially in control (Alman 8). As Karen Olness, M.D. from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio explains, "All hypnosis is self–hypnosis. We all tune things in and out all day long. • 29. The Concept Of Phychoanalysis Of Sigmund Freud The concept of psychoanalysis was first introduced under Sigmund Freud, who came up with his own theory of the psychoanalytic approach in Vienna in the late 1800s. He was previously a neurologist looking for a treatment for neuroticism and hysteria. While searching for this and also being employed at a Children's hospital, he came to the realization that there were many mental issues that were not all in the conscious mind due to witnessing aphasic children with no apparent cause for their symptoms (Krull & Kulikov, 2006). This is when he began to write on the subject. In 1885, Freud began studying with Jean–Martin Charcot in Paris. Charcot centered his study primarily on hysteria, anesthesia, paralyses, and hypnotism to attempt to alleviate these internal issues. Freud and Josef Breuer began to write about hysterical symptoms and his theories on them which are characterized as the beginning of psychoanalysis. Josef Breuer is most famously known for his case studies on "Anna O", a woman who experienced symptoms such as: hallucinations, speech problems, partial paralysis, and visual disturbances(Krull & Kulikov, 2006). Breuer diagnosed her with hysteria, but Freud had a different idea. He believed that at the core of her hysteria symptoms were repressed memories within her childhood, mostly with sexual associations. In 1896, Freud published a "seduction theory" which suggested that hysterical systems stem from excitations in adolescence, such as sexual abuse that was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Shor Theory Of Hypnosis Hypnosis, also known as hypnotherapy or hypnotic suggestion, consists of a state of trance in which a center of attention and a more intense concentration is experienced. Hypnosis is usually performed with the help of a therapist who uses verbal repetition and mental images. When a person is under the effects of hypnosis, they usually feel calm and relaxed, and are more willing to receive suggestions. Hypnosis can be used to help people control unwanted behaviors or to help them cope better with anxiety or pain. Contrary to what many people believe, although people will be more willing to receive suggestions during hypnosis, they will not lose control of their behavior. How does hypnosis arise? According to Ronald E. Shor, from ancient times, men of the most diverse cultures practiced hypnotic and suggestive phenomena for the healing of the faith and for magical– religious and other purposes. Josef Breuer eventually became friends with Freud and later on introduced Freud to Wilhelm Fliess. Fliess and Breuer were two influential individuals in Freud's life and Breuer greatly influenced the development of psychoanalysis. Josef Breuer was a Viennese physician who used hypnotism to treat hysteria and eventually Freud also used hypnosis to treat his own patients which helped him form his ideas on unconscious desires. Instead of standing up to the Christian, Freud's father just moved out of the way and retrieved his cap from the ground. The story was similar to his father's story only in the play when the main character is told to move off the road by the king the character instead retaliates and murders the king. The Oedipus Complex is a child's desire for sexual involvement with either the mother or the father depending on the child's gender followed by rivalry with the parent of the same sex (Breger, 2012). Hypnosis Research Paper The first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of hypnosis is usually a magician convincing a person to act like a chicken, however, hypnosis is actually an approach that doctors can use to treat pain, depression, anxiety, phobias, and more. Hypnosis is a state in which a person appears to be under a trance and is extremely concentrated (Brandt). It is not a new concept. In fact, hypnosis has been used by the ancient Egyptians over 2,000 years ago (healing power). In the 1770s, the Austrian physician Franz Anton Mesmer began to study hypnosis scientifically. More recently, it was used during World War I and World War II to treat soldiers who experienced post–traumatic stress disorder and other mental disorders (World Book). There are some ... It can also be used to combat the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation, or a chronic illness (World Book). Hypnosis can also help the 25% of Americans who avoid and fear the dentist. After a five minute hypnosis session, patients can be relaxed enough to receive novocaine and the treatment they need inexpensively and without medication (healing power). Finally, hypnosis can help burn victims. These people must have their dead skin removed every day for up to a few months. The process is so painful that most patients must be given powerful painkillers that can be addictive and can cause confusion, gastrointestinal problems, and breathing trouble. Hypnosis can relax the patient and can allow them to go through the treatment without experiencing pain. The hypnosis session is inexpensive and does not require addictive medication (healing power). Despite the evidence that supports the fact that hypnosis is a legitimate approach to treating conditions, many graduate schools have little hypnosis training in their psychology programs (Smith). This needs to change so that more people can become trained hypnotists so the approach can become more widespread. As previously stated, it would benefit hospitals financially and patients physically. It is free, can treat a variety of conditions, has no side effects, and is not addictive. Dr. Spiegel believes that it could even be used in place of addictive opiates. • 53. Analysis Of The Poem ' The Carnival ' Using the carnival as a background is appropriate because it is a time of celebration when everything is in chaos and people have lost their self–control. The carnival may be a symbol of Montresor's own madness and the crazy thoughts in his head. The carnival usually indicates joyful social interaction but it is distorted by Montresor. Montresor's reference to the bones and vaults of his family foreshadow the story's descent into the underworld. The underground travels of the two men are a metaphor for their trip to hell. The carnival is essentially for the living but Montresor takes it into the vaults underground, to the realm of the dead and the satanic. The setting Poe chose for the story adds to the terror. Most of the events of the story runs in dark, damp tunnels piled with the bones of dead people. By taking Fortunato into the vaults, Montresor cuts him off from help. The two characters are underground and isolated. Taking Fortunato to the catacombs means a descent into hell. The underground catacomb suggests confinement. This is called the "Gothic Interior." Poe writes: At the most remote end of the crypt there appeared another less spacious. Its walls had been lined with human remains piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris. Three sides of this interior crypt were still ornamented in this manner. From the fourth the bones had been thrown down, and lay promiscuously upon the earth, forming at one point a mound of some size. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One reason is that if someone let's just say, tells you to act like a chicken while they "hypnotize" you, you are probably not going to act like a chicken, but there is a chance that you could act like a chicken. One of the reasons I think that hypnosis is fake is because like there is proof that is real buts like what if behind the scenes they tell each other what they are going to say and stuff and then they say bark like a dog so the person just barks like a dog. To be successfully hypnotized, a person must want to undergo the process voluntarily and also possess at least a moderate degree of hypnotizability. Even highly hypnotizable people may not benefit from hypnotherapy, and a single session of hypnosis usually does not produce lasting results. Often, a person will have to undergo a series of hypnotic procedures to reinforce whatever constructive suggestions may be given. The most frequent clinical uses of hypnosis include: breaking bad habits, overcoming insomnia, recalling forgotten experiences, and as an anesthetic for managing pain. You can easily test the benefits of self–hypnosis. Simply sit or lie down and get comfortable in a quiet setting. Then, close your eyes and take in a few deep breaths, slowly, in and out. Sigmund Freud, Psychoanalysis and the impact on 20th Century Ego Psychology Meghan Laubengeyer Temple University Psychologist, psychoanalyst, doctor of medicine, and author, Sigmund Freud's contributions to the world of science and psychology were far from limited. The self and widely regarded scientist was born in Friedberg in 1856 where he lived before moving to Vienna, Germany, where he would later produce founding revelations at the birth of psychology as a science. From his beginnings, Freud focused on psychopathology and the conscious mind (Jones, 1949). The renowned "Father of Psychoanalysis" created a pathway and a foundation for psychology, influencing the world of psychology from its birth to modern day practice. Freud's delve into the unconscious, dreams, psychosexual development, and the id, ego, and super–ego, are just a limited number of his studies that greatly influenced numerous psychologists and theories of modern psychology. One of his earliest practices and most accredited work dealt with psychoanalysis specifically. Though this practice is seldom used in modern psychology in the treatment of psychological disorders, it assuredly carried great influence in the development of modern practices of psychological theories. • 73. Hypnotism: An Analysis Of The Subconscious Mind The brain is built in a very special way and so is the subconscious mind. Our awareness and thought processes form the foundation of the human spirit and the human character and this information is weaved into us from young. Freud called this the Id, the Ego and the Superego of our brains, and each of them has a specific function in determining needs, morality, character and mindset. The formative years is when this is most important, because when we are an adult and have the mental faculties of rational thought and critical thinking well in place, we are better able to siphon off the stimuli of the world, crunch them into raw data and apply them to our brains and accompanying consciousness substructure. This means that we can judge and we can think. Hypnotism seeks to go into the subconscious and alter the states of the mind and make us do things. Nevertheless, there is one inherent flaw in this application of the age old technology of hypnotism, is the fact the subconscious is a direct representation of the conscious mind's filtering techniques. Which means that if we are aware of the inherent dangers of something, we translate that into data and inject it into our subconscious mind, which then will ... The Conscious Mind Analysis Throughout the opening examples presented in Miller's essay, the conscious mind is typically observed inadvertently, usually as a byproduct of attempting socioeconomic and political gains and typically through some form of pseudoscience as its medium. However, as the essay progresses–and the time frame the examples take place within advances–the conscious mind begins to be observed both intentionally and in ways more closely resembling the principles of modern science. For instance, Braid's investigations of hypnotic phenomena failed to thoroughly recognize the role of consciousness in the results of his experimentation. Rather, the concept of such a role, "the condition of the patient's nervous system," (14), in the causing of the hypnotic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mesmer's work was severely clouded by his subjective beliefs, which make his studies more of exercises in self indulgence than scientific process. Much of the same can be observed for the works of Elliotson, Baron Dupotet and Braid, as they also succumbed to desire for personal gain from their work–building and maintaining popular private practices despite their scientific faults, with Elliotson specifically being described as enjoying "a prosperous professional life with a wide circle of admiring and affectionate friends," (12). It should be noted, though, that their respective work did contribute as portions of a base for future scientists to work from. Their successors, the likes of Carpenter, Laycock and Hall, were able to find pieces of the work that could be investigated–such as the state of individuals while experiencing a trance–and develop those aspects into more scientific queries. Thus the evolution of the study of consciousness can be observed in the essay. The development over time of theories of consciousness is similar to the development of theoretically accepted models of the atom. • 89. Notes On Hypnosis : Hypnosis UF217: Hypnosis Everyone knows that if you really want to mesmerize someone, you'd better have a audacious showbiz tuxedo and a pretty dark black Van Dyke goatee. And a cape, and a top hat, probably. Also a "mesmerizing" spiral coin, or a pendulous pocket watch. "YOU ARE GETTING VERY SLEEPY." Actually it turns out there's something to hypnosis, but there's two avenues: there is the "stage hypnotism" that showmen and side–show acts perform, which is horseshit, then there's the "might be something to it" variety of hypnotherapeutic "hyper–awareness." Thing about "real" hypnotism is we do it every day. But let's start with stage hypnotism–the "you are now under my spell" variety. The main thing about this kind of "act" is that the participant is 100% just onboard for the spiel. The "magician" literally just tells the participant to cluck like a chicken, and the participant will because he was told to, and now he's part of a show, and who is he to let everyone down? In stage hypnotism, there's no difference between pretending you magically influenced someone's actions vs just saying "do this thing" and they comply. Compliance is based on the simple mechanism that no one want's to be the spoil–sport. You get called up to be on stage, and now everyone is watching, and the entire audience (and you) have shared expectation that you'll do what you're told. And so, you do. Some of them believe that a simple look at the eyes of a strange person can hypnotize them. Some of them think that a person who hypnotize uses a pendulum–like object that catches the attention of his victim. Lots of incidents were recorded that hypnotism is said to be used in robbery. Stories tell that strangers talk to their victims and look at their eyes. "I find the joy in life through its cruel and powerful struggles" (Strindberg 57): An Exploration of August Strindberg's Personality through Hypnotism in Miss Julie In the preface of the "brutal... cynical... heartless drama" (Strindberg 57), Miss Julie, August Strindberg gives an in depth analysis of his play and himself. Fashioning his characters as "souls" (Strindberg 91), Strindberg permits mobility in personal development and reflects the complexity of the self. Through his drawing of the characters to be "swift and vacillating" (Strindberg 82), Strindberg reflects the temperament during the late 1800s, incorporating an "urgently hysterical" (Strindberg 91) atmosphere. The preface demonstrates Strindberg's take on hysteria (alike how the character drawing can be used to reflect Strindberg's views on psyche) as an influx of "lower, unreliable instruments of thought which we call feelings" (Strindberg 88). Although this waking suggestion brings a violent end to the play, Strindberg's use of hypnosis can instead be seen as a reflection of his desperation and hopelessness regarding the truth of life. Each character is unique in the play, avoiding "simple stage characters... one [which] is stupid.. one brutal... one jealous..." (Strindberg 59). Strindberg avoids the "idiotically mathematical" (Strindberg 57) ideology where the "big eat the small" (Strindberg 57), instead employing a variety of characters and plot, which mirror the irregularity of everyday life. Strindberg adds minute details to each character, justifying his premise that "[any] event in real life... springs generally from a whole series of motives" (Strindberg 58). Several of Miss Julie's motives are attributed to her rearing as "her father 's mistaken upbringing of the girl" (Strindberg 58). Strindberg also corroborates Miss Julie's persona with "her own nature... degenerate brain" (Strindberg 58), which decides her fate to imitate that of degenerate offspring to "succumb [in the end], either because they are ... • 109. Examples Of Hypnotism In War By Jack London You are transported into someone else's mind. You perceive things just as they do. Through his/her senses you experience a variety of emotions and thoughts. You are surrounded by unfamiliar people in his/her little world, yet somehow they make you feel like you have known them your entire life through the way they make you smile, laugh, and sometimes even cry. How is this possible, you ask? Could it be through virtual reality, perhaps even through hypnotism? The answer lies within stories. Authors are able to naturally coax readers into the minds of characters by using point–of– view. It has a great impact on characterization, specifically in the short story "War", by Jack London. In the middle of the story, when the cavalry scout happens upon another person, the first thing he notices is how his face is covered with "several weeks' growth of ginger–colored beard" (London 42). London then goes on to give us a little bit more detail, "The eyes were blue and wide apart, with laughter–wrinkles in the corners" (42). Due to the unique limited–omniscient point–of–view, not much is revealed about any of the other characters in the story, not even the antagonist who plays an enormous role. This point– of–view reveals practically nothing about this vital character including his name, background, etc. All in all, it is evident that point–of–view greatly affects the characterization of the ginger–bearded man. The characterization of the cavalry scout and the ginger–bearded man is greatly influenced by the limited–omniscient point–of–view of the short story "War", by Jack London. Point–of–view, or perspective, is an important tool applied by authors for use in literature, but it pertains to more than just books. Perspective is crucial in order for us to understand others, to not only step into their shoes, but to walk around in them as well. If humans can learn to take advantage of the powerful tool that is perspective, maybe we would not need to go to war, but rather we would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Psychologists had discovered the aristocracy and medical theories of hypnosis by introducing it into the course for curing psychiatric and physical illnesses. Medical doctors in France have embraced the new term "hypnotism" by the late 1800s, although they had originally used the term "mesmerism" for the symptoms (Upshaw, 2006). We believe the subject is compelled to obey any command, no matter how strange or unreasonable, muttering, "Yes, master." When you're awake, your conscious mind works to evaluate a lot of your thoughts, make decisions and put certain ideas into action. It also processes new information and relays it to the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind takes care of all the things you do automatically, like breathing. The subconscious mind processes the physical information your body receives and actually lets you solve problems, create conversation and put together plans and ideas. But when you're asleep, the conscious mind gets out of the way, and your subconscious has free reign. Psychiatrists theorize that the deep relaxation and focusing exercises of hypnotism work to calm and subdue the conscious mind so that it takes a less active role in your thinking process. In this state, you're still aware of what's going on, but your conscious mind takes a backseat to your subconscious mind. Effectively, this allows you and the hypnotist to work directly with the subconscious. It provides an especially convincing explanation for the playfulness and uninhibitedness of hypnotic subjects. The conscious mind is the main inhibitive component in your makeup –– it's in charge of putting on the brakes –– while the subconscious mind is the seat of imagination and impulse. When your subconscious mind is in control, you feel much freer and may be more creative. Your conscious mind doesn't have to filter through everything. The first colonists blamed mental illness on witchcraft and demonic possession. The mentally ill were often imprisoned or sent to poorhouses. If they didn't go to one of those they were left untreated at their home. Conditions in the prisons were awful. In 1841, a lady named Dorothea Dix volunteered to teach a Sunday–school class for the female inmates. She was outraged with the conditions of the prisons that she witnessed. A boss could have an employee committed if they were slow or a bad employee. People could be committed if they were poor, being an alcoholic, a person with a short fuse, or anyone who deviated from the normal thing society thought was right.
