Main Themes In Chinese Cinderella
The book Chinese Cinderella, written by Adeline Yen Mah has four main themes. They are: family & relationships, abandonment & loneliness,
self–esteem and history. The author Adeline Yen Mah, also wrote the book Falling Leaves but Chinese Cinderella was written for younger audiences.
Chinese Cinderella is actually an autobiography, not a fairy tale. Adeline (the protagonist) has to work for her dreams, not by wishing from a fairy
godmother. This book was set in the 1900's (1941–1952). At that time WW2 was happening making Adeline's life harder. The moral of this book
would be that no matter your circumstances, you can work hard and achieve your dreams. This book is really captivating and it tells the reader not to
underestimate anyone. That's why I think this is an amazing book for everyone to read.
There are a range of genres in Chinese Cinderella. They are adventure, drama, and history. The genres change the story from being a fairy tale to a
true autobiography. As the book's genres are adventure and history, it does not relate to the fairy tale of Cinderella. Adeline's childhood is harsh and
she has to find her own ways without a fairy godmother. At the start of multiple chapters, the year is written and historical events are told, which
gives the reader historical knowledge. Another historical scene is when Nai Nai was telling Adeline about her bound feet (page 7 & 8). There are lots
of dramas and adventures that go on in Adeline's world, which relate to the themes. These genres make the book harder to put down.
The plot and structure in this autobiography makes the story of Adeline's childhood flow better. The orientation started by Niang marrying Adeline's
father. At Adeline's birth her mother died so Adeline was treated badly and unfairly. In the complication, Adeline was unwanted from the start. She was
sent away to an orphanage because she was wanted by no one. In the resolution Adeline decided after winning the playwriting competition that she
wanted to be a writer. She studied medicine at Oxford University with Third Brother. The reflection is that no matter what your conditions are you can
achieve anything like Adeline did. In the story Adeline read a newspaper article that said "It was announced

Compare/Contrast Memoir
Compare/Contrast Memoir
Where you live may determine your story, but not who you are. Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Mah and the Diary of Anne Frank both depict the
story of a normal young girl, who both struggle with similar family problems but are highly influenced by the setting of their society they live in.
However, Falling Leaves is written by an older woman relating the life of Yen Mah, from her earliest childhood memories in China to her current old
age in California; Anne Frank is the direct thoughts and events chronicled the same day they occur, with minimal revisions. The juvenile tone of young
adults grappling with the struggles of their respective societies, along with the variation in diction contribute to the various similarities and differences
within these memoirs.

The diary doesn't usually sugar coat horrific events, nor does it bog itself down with heavy and emotional passages, unlike Falling Leaves, which is
written by Yen Mah as a adult women who is recalling her childhood, therefore being more in depth and analytical about her past decisions, taking a
more objective stance.Due to the author being a young and naive teenager, the story doesn't have much technical facts or figures. Instead, it mostly
describes the thoughts of a regular adolescent girl, such as boys she likes, her relationship with her friends, and her struggle with self identity and
finding her niche in the world. The tone of her diary naive and juvenile, intertwined with bouts of sarcasm, humor and irony. Much like a normal
teenagers brain, which is riddled with conflicting emotions, there are splashes of anger, jealousy, confusion, and hope thrown into the

Chinese Cinderella By Adeline Yen Mah
Chinese Cinderella is an autobiography of Adeline Yen Mah. Adeline Yen Mah, the Chinese Cinderella was not as lucky as the original western
Cinderella who got the help from others. Their lives are totally different. Her family considered her bad luck because her mother died giving birth to
her. Although Adeline won prizes at school, they were not enough to compensate for what she really yearns for the love and understanding of herfamily.
Chinese Cinderella tells the story of Perseverance, also that is also what I need. Perseverance is an admirable trait that Adeline exhibits throughout the
novel, leading the reader to believe that anything can be overcome with faith and hard work. Since my childhood, my parents gave me a lot of
expectations, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the book, Adeline wrote "I was winning the medal every week and wearing it constantly. I knew this displeased by siblings, especially Big Sister
and Second Brother, but it was the only way to make father take notice and be proud of me. (Mah)" Adeline was through her performance and the
personality from her strong effort. Adeline's flaunting of the medal can be seen as another show of excessive pride within the novel but it is instead
the means through which a young girl looks to gain acceptance within an uncaring family. Same as in the real world, "More than 61 million children –
about one–fifth of the kids in China – live in villages without their parents. (Wan)" These kids loss of parental care, phone is the only way to have a
communication between kids and their parents. The things most parents care about you just ask you how your grades are, how good is the exam?
The child can only try to get good marks in exams to get the praise and care of the parents; otherwise it is only a scolded. The pride over that measly
medal and marks show the sadness that is Adeline's and children day to day, and parents only caring when their children receive it. Nowadays, children
only truly mature when they realize that their achievement should only matter if it makes themselves happy, not their parents. As long as children are
stuck in this dependent cycle, they will never be content and

Falling Leaves Character Analysis
Central Idea
In Falling Leaves, Adeline Yen Mah illustrated the desire of wanting to be accepted and appreciated by your family. This is significant because most
of the conflict in the book revolves around Adeline not be appreciated by her family.. In the book she does everything she can to be accepted by her
parents, like doing what her parents want her to, even as an adult
Key Event #1
When the HUnling Yens moved into a new house in Shanghai, the division amidst thefamily was first shown. Niang, Father, Franklin, and Susan all
slept downstairs in the large bedrooms, while everyone else slept upstairs. This division is shown in the following quote, "When we first arrived from

I decided to act and consult a lawyer immediately. They had given me permission to do so" (176). This shows that even though during this part of the
book she was in a bad place in her life, but she still wanted permission from her parents to end the situation.
Key Event #5
Adeline seeks the acceptance of Niang and Father even after they had died. Adeline feels excluded once again when niang and Father's wills are
read,on both occasions she is left out and does not receive any of the inheritance. She later finds out that her father did want to include her in his will,
but Niang changed it at the last minute. This key event is resolved because Adeline finds out that her father did care about her and appreciate her; he
left part of his original inheritance to her in the original will and excluded the children he had disowned.
Protagonist's Personal ID
In the beginning of the book, Adline does not feel as if she is important and she is repeatedly told this by he parents. Adeline is continuously sent
because because her father and Niang simply do not want anything to do with ehr, Mah observed, "Yeye knew. 'His child has done no wrong, but

Chinese Cinderella Research Paper
Chinese Cinderella, written by Adeline Yen Mah is a depressing story because of the hardships Adeline has to cope with like being cognizant of the
fact she's an unwanted child, constantly being blamed for her mothers death, and lastly being looked upon unfairly by Niang and father. Adeline was
like a flower whose stem was broken. Because she had all the potential and brilliance in the world, but she didn't have the one thing she really needed,
support. From a reader's standpoint, Chinese Cinderella is a depressing book because of the lack of care and nourishment Adeline obtained throughout
her entire childhood. I like to refer Adeline's upbringing to a bag of Original Lays potato chips, sure they're average, but they aren't near as satisfying...

Then you blink and that presence you once felt with your mother is gone forever. Suddenly the attention is shifted to your mom, but it's too late.
Little did Adeline know that looking into her mother's eyes was the last connection she would ever share with her. Finally, you are brought home
for the first time and everyone is extatic to see you until they realize that its just you and dad. Everybody is asking where mom is. Within one
minute of explanation you are dreaded by most of your family. Unfortunately that was the case for Adeline. Due to being blamed for her mother's
death, her family ignored her. One time Adeline came home from home school and had a silver medal pinned to her chest because she got an award
for leading her class in academics. Instead of earning praise from her Second Brother she received a loud smack to the face. Second Brother
proclaimed,"This'll teach you not to show off your medal!"(pg.9) Another time she was awarded at assembly for her outstanding grades, but not one of
her family members was there to congratulate her. Adeline's siblings also taunted and toyed with her as if she was a puppet on their strings. During a
family meal, father was vaunting about Adeline,"You must continue to bring honor to your family name,"(pg.11) in front of Adeline's siblings after
eating the main course. It was time for dessert. Of course on this night it was Adeline's

Adeline Yen Mah's Characters In Chinese Cinderella
Adeline Yen Mah had done an extraordinary job at writing Chinese Cinderella. I believe she has done an even better job at achieving her goal. The
author hints multiple reasons for writing this story. Her dedication page was written for the children who weren't loved by their parents. In Mah's
dedication page, She says that you are not alone and to use her story to encourage yourself. This leads me to infer that she wrote this because she wants
to comfort unwanted children. However, I believe Mah had more intentions for writing this story. "It was painful and difficult for me to write
this,"(Preface xi). Mah had never told anyone the truth about her family. Everyone thought Mah had a loving family until they went to her home for a
surprise party."... Tell them to gun dan (get lost) and never come here again,"(Chapter 14, 115). She took a slap from her stepmother and was
humiliated in front of all her friends and schoolmates. People go to the therapist for these kinds of things, but she stayed strong. Even after years of
rejection, she tried to reunite with her family. She wrote a book called Falling Leaves only after finding out that she had been cut out of Niang's will.
"...But she felt compelled to [write the story],"(Preface xi). For us to truly understand why this upset here, she shows us what her life was. In an
interview, you can see that Mah still gets emotional with her story because all she wanted was love from her family. She wrote Chinese Cinderella
because she

Chinese Cinderella is a very moving story that will touch your heart. It is about a young girl, Adeline Yen Mah, who goes through many hardships
throughout her life. Chinese Cinderella, by Adeline Yen Mah, is an inspirational story about an unwanted and unloved daughter who tries her best to
make her family notice and appreciate her.
Adeline gets back up everytime she gets abused. She gets whipped and slapped for every little bad thing she does. Adeline said, "Niang's blows
must have caused a nosebleed (p.115)." Niang believes Adeline is showing off when her friends surprise her, which isn't true. I don't believe she
should be slapped for something that isn't even her fault. "Father ordered me to lie facedown on my bed and whipped me (p.104)." Since Adeline
went to a party instead of school, Father's punishment was to whip her. I don't think Adeline will learn her lesson, she will just be scared. Talking to
Adeline would have helped her realize right from wrong and learn from her mistakes. As you can see, Father isn't very nice to Adeline, and barely
even realizes she's there most of the time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"But it was the only way to make Father notice and be proud of me (p.15)." Adeline kept trying to win best student of the week just to impress
Father and make him proud of her. Father shouldn't only be proud of one thing, but should always be proud of Adeline because she is a great
student and a great person. "I'm afraid I've forgotten your Chinese name (p.124)," says Father. It is very wrong for a father to forget his own
daughters name, especially since he took part in naming her. Everyone else in the family is important to Father, but Adeline seems to be the one
ignored which is very unfair. Most people in her family don't pay attention and appreciate

She would receive the weekly award almost every week. When Adeline returned home, she explained the meaning of the award winning medal to her

childhood and young teenage years. Unlike most children, Adeline struggled to live a 'normal' life. She was often looked down upon by most of her
family and was neglected and abused in a way that was totally unacceptable. This is significantly repeated throughout her juvenility. An important idea
that recurs throughout the story Chinese Cinderella is, unwanted and mistreated by your family and relations.
Adeline is unloved and unwanted by most of her family, with the exception of her Aunt Baba and Grandfather YeYe. Because of her mother's sudden

Motor cars, trams, rickshaws, Pedicabs and bicycles were always passing by. In China the roads are so busy and the vehicles are traveling at such
a fast speed that the people of China sometimes fear their lives when they cross the street. This shows that there is a large population in China, and
these kinds of road rages tend to take place in a country where there is a large population. In America, we do have busy roads, but China is has the
highest population in the entire world. It's hard to compare what the streets of China are really like, but I would love to be able to experience it.
Another difference I noticed while reading the book, was that Adeline never called her siblings by their names. After doing some searching on this,
I've learned that out of respect, the younger brothers or sisters in a family would not call their older brothers or sisters by their first names. They
would refer to them and call them names such as 'Fourth Brother' or 'Little Sister'. In out culture, we just call our siblings by their name, and even
sometimes a nickname that sticks to them throughout their childhood. Adeline also does not call her grandparents by "Grandma and Grandpa" like I

Smack! Smack! The feeling of being unwanted and unloved by your parents sinks in again. Such was the life of Adeline Yen Mah, an unwanted and
mistreated daughter who suffers all her life. Chinese Cinderella, a book by Adeline Yen Mah, is an inspiring story in which Adeline overcomes her
abusive childhood with the love and care of Aunt Baba and Ye Ye. Aunt Baba believes in Adeline in many ways throughout the story. For example
"You can be anything you set your mind to be. Why, you might even become the president of your own bank one day (78)." This shows that Aunt
Baba believes that Adeline can do whatever she puts her mind to. Aunt Baba knows Adeline's full potential and tries to tell her, but Adeline has a hard
time believing that. Another example is "When I get a good report card, she locks it in her safe–deposit box, and wears the key around her neck even
when she sleeps, as if my grades were her most cherished treasures (52)." This shows that Aunt Baba keeps Adeline close to her heart. Aunt Baba
probably feels proud of Adeline's success. Aunt Baba cares for Adeline, but so did Ye Ye.

For example, "When Ye Ye first arrived in Shanghai we begged him for money and he gave us our tram fare to go to school (37)." This shows that
Ye Ye doesn't want the kids to exert themselves walking to school everyday. He cares for them. Ye Ye likes to help Adeline out and he shows it on
many occasions throughout the book. Another example is "I heard of your unexpected arrival in Hong Kong, he said, I ordered the maids to set up a
cot in my room at once (148)." Ye Ye doesn't want Niang to hurt Adeline or take her away from him. Again he is watching Adeline's back and is there
for her when Aunt Baba isn't. Ye Ye and Aunt Baba helped Adeline throughout many aspects of her

Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah
In the autobiography Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, the narrator was influenced in many ways by the people around her. One character
which influences the narrator's life to a vast amount was her step–mother Niang. Her Aunt Baba also played a very big part on how Yen Mah turned out
in her later and earlier years as well as everywhere in between. Her grandfather Ye–Ye was a constant support toAdeline Yen Mah.
In the book Chinese Cinderella it is apparent that Niang has had a positive and also a negative impact on Yen Mah. In the book Chinese Cinderella
Niang makes the narrator feel a mixture of negative emotions such as neglect, foreignness, and also a feeling no one should feel, insignificance
and humiliation. This is shown when the narrator writes "Niang predicted a hopeless future for me." (Page 124). This had a very pronounced
effect on Yen Mah. Therefore as a result of Niang suppressing her, the narrator was able to aim for something greater and also bring recognition to
herself. Niang also affected the narrator's mental stand point because Yen Mah was treated as a servant when compared to Niang's own children. In
which the way Adeline Yen Mah was treated was very immoral because it gave Yen Mah the feeling of being not as wanted as Niang's own children.
If Niang did not treat the narrator the way she did Adeline Yen Mah may not be the person she is– one that aspires to succeed and also one that sees
something beyond her circumstances. In Chinese Cinderella,

Chinese Cinderella is a very sad story where a little, unwanted girl is being abused every day. The novel Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah is
depressing. The main character, Adeline, is always being treated the wrong way, this story could not be more sad. Adeline is not noticeable to most
people. For example "I was the only one left. Nobody had come for me" ( Yen Mah 27). Adeline is invisible to most of herfamily. Nobody noticing
Adeline important because it is an example of showing why she is invisible. Another example is "Where are you?" Father aid in an uneven voice,

Chinese Cinderella Quotes
Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah is a very depressing memoir for numerous reasons. Some of these reasons include that she is constantly being
pushed away by her family, her evil stepmother Niang is always being mean and rude to Adeline throughout her life, and all her sibling blame her for
the death of her mother. Adeline has to live in pain and fear in the memoir because of how unwanted she is.
The first reason why Adeline's life in the book is depressing is because she is unwanted to her family. She is unwanted by her family because she is of
no importance to most of her family and nobody ever wants to be around her. Like in the book it says on page 27, "'Eventually I was the only one
left. Nobody had come for me." This quote is from the part in the book when nobody in her family remembered to take her home. This shows how she
is unwanted by her family and she has to live unwanted her whole life by her family. Another quote from the book is, "Though my parents tell me I'm

Adeline is scared of Niang, for instance, "The dreaded day came for me to come face to face with Niang." Page 145. This is important because Adeline
has to live in fear of her terrible step–mom her whole life. I would summarize this by saying that Niang treats Adeline so bad that Adeline doesn't even
want to think of her. Another quote that explains Niang's cruelty to Adeline is, "'It's so unfair,' Victor continued. 'Why doesn't she get to go anywhere
with us?'
'That's just the way it is!' Niang exclaimed sharply." This is important because when Victor, Adeline's cousin, tried to stand up to Niang she yelled at
him and refused to let Adeline come with them to do something fun. I would summarize this by saying Adeline is always left behind in her family.
This is very depressing for Adeline to have to live with a cruel

Analysis Of 'A Long Way Gone : Memoirs Of A Boy Soldier'
What is it about a book that keeps one reading? One continues to read a book when it is interesting and if they can make a connection to it. But,
what makes a book interesting? There are many ways authors attract their readers. Authors use different techniques like, circle chronological order
style, evoking strong emotions, and creating complex characters to shock and lure their readers. Many authors use circle chronological order style
when writing their book. "Instead of simply beginning at the beginning, you begin at the end. Many essays and pieces of fiction use this
technique. They begin by talking about or hinting at how the story ends, then go back to the beginning" (David Lee Finkle). In A Long Way
Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Ishmael Beah uses this style of writing in the prologue. He starts the story off in New York, where his high
school friends were questioning his past life in the war. The page is headed "New York , 1998." "My high school friends have begun to suspect I
haven't told them the full story of my life...'Why did you leave Sierra Leone?' 'Because there is a war'" (Beah 4). This shows that, at the end, Ishmael
lived through a war and made it out of Sierra Leone before he attended high school. Circle chronological order was also a style used in Kabul Beauty
School: An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil. The story starts off with Deborah getting Roshanna and her family ready for the engagement party.
At the engagement party, Roshanna and her groom

I Have Discovered Is Adeline Yen Mah 's Chinese Cinderella
Throughout the years, reading and writing have had an impact on my life unlike any other. Specific writings have prepared me for the journey of life.
These pieces of literature consist of, Chinese Cinderella, Life's for the Living, Forever in our Hearts, an autobiography written by my
great–great–grandfather, the phrase 'Mind over Matter,' and Project Semicolon. Chinese Cinderella, Life's for the Living, and Forever in our Hearts
have influenced me to be unyielding. The autobiography inspires me to work diligently and never concede. Optimism is encouraged by 'Mind over
Matter' and The Semicolon Project.
One significant autobiography that I have discovered is Adeline Yen Mah's Chinese Cinderella. Mah shares the incessant struggles of growing up
with a family that detested her and how she dealt with them. Her mother died as she was giving birth to Adeline; in turn, she was viewed as a
cursed child. As a matter of fact, reading helped Mah cope with these particular problems for the duration her life; from her love of reading, Mah
decided that becoming a writer would be her ultimate goal. In her story, she remarked "I read because I have to. It drives everything else from my
mind. It lets me escape to find other worlds," (Mah). This young girl was capable of pursuing her dreams through difficult times; as a result, the
pursuit of reaching my goals has become feasible.

eventually she had been picked up and she received a map: 'Read this map of Shanghai and find where you are and where you need to go. This way

readers. One of the factors is the point of view. Chinese Cinderella is written in the first point of view and the innocent eye, which supports the readers
to recognize the fluctuating emotions of Adeline throughout different situations. One excerpt that shows this characteristic is a scene when Third

Theme Of Chinese Cinderella
On Google.com the word "significant" refers to something that is "sufficiently great or important to be worthy of attention; noteworthy." For something
to have a significant impact on someone, it must be meaningful, relevant, and important. As stated by Thomas Hardy, "A story must be exceptional
enough to justify its telling; it must have something more unusual to relate than the ordinary experience of every average man and woman." It must
have something meaningful, something that pulls a reader in– so that the audience can laugh when the character laughs or cry when the character cries.
It must be significant. A story that fits the definition of "significant" is one by Adeline Yen Mah. In the novel "Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an
Unwanted Daughter," Adeline Yen Mah pulls the reader in by using the themes of loneliness and acceptance
– something that is faced by nearly all at
some point in their life. What makes Yen Jun–ling's story so engaging are the emotions as well as the obstacles she went though. The circumstances she
faced, even though not to the same extent, can be somewhat relatable. The feeling of loneliness, for instance, is an emotion that numerous people face
at least once in their life. Jun–Ling was always treated as the outsider– the unwanted child, a burden to her family. At school she had friends, but she
was never allowed to meet up and play with them and when she came home it was as if she didn't exist. When she was given a little duckling, named

"Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted are the greatest poverty." (Mah xii) Throughout her entire childhood, Adeline constantly feels
lonely and unwanted. In the memoir, Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, Adeline's life from age four to fourteen is very depressing. She is
abused, forgotten and excluded, and loses important people. Throughout the story, Adeline is abused mentally, physically, and verbally. Her
stepmother is the cause of most of this, and often slaps, hits, and yells at her. She once screamed, "Not only are you a liar and a thief, but you are
manipulative as well. Nothing will ever come of you. The problem is that you have bad blood from your mother. You don't deserve to be fed and
housed here. Girls like you should be sent away. You don't belong in this house!" (Mah 103) just because Adeline went to a birthday party. This is an
example of Adeline being abused verbally. This shows how harsh and mean her stepmother Niang is. For her entire childhood, she has disliked herself.

Barriers In Chinese Cinderella
Every adolescent has struggles and problems that need to be resolved throughout their life, however, one constant is that their parents are always there
for them. Whether they fix the problem themselves, or help their child through it, the child almost always receives the help they require. A quote from
"Mending Wall" by Robert Frost helps describe what it is like when the parents are not there for the child. "Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
that sends the frozen–ground–swell under it, and spills the upper boulders in the sun; and makes gaps even two can pass abreast" (1). In this instance,
the child is the wall, and the parent is the person that does not love it. Slowly, the child will break apart, and eventually collapse without the affection
and support they need. In Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, this is one of the few unfortunate exceptions where the child doesn't acquire
assistance from any parent. Adeline had many occurrences within her community that changed her mentality, one being that her self–esteem declined,
and made her feel like she needs to prove herself worthy, no matter the circumstance. Adeline's step–mother, Niang, never fails to be uncouth towards
her, not just by damaging her self–esteem, but also through verbal and physical abuse (whipping, hitting, etc.). "I approached her gingerly, trembling
with terror. She slapped my face so hard I almost fell... ...she slapped me with the back of her hand against my other cheek" (Mah 114–115).

Main Themes In Chinese Cinderella

  • 1. Main Themes In Chinese Cinderella The book Chinese Cinderella, written by Adeline Yen Mah has four main themes. They are: family & relationships, abandonment & loneliness, self–esteem and history. The author Adeline Yen Mah, also wrote the book Falling Leaves but Chinese Cinderella was written for younger audiences. Chinese Cinderella is actually an autobiography, not a fairy tale. Adeline (the protagonist) has to work for her dreams, not by wishing from a fairy godmother. This book was set in the 1900's (1941–1952). At that time WW2 was happening making Adeline's life harder. The moral of this book would be that no matter your circumstances, you can work hard and achieve your dreams. This book is really captivating and it tells the reader not to underestimate anyone. That's why I think this is an amazing book for everyone to read. There are a range of genres in Chinese Cinderella. They are adventure, drama, and history. The genres change the story from being a fairy tale to a true autobiography. As the book's genres are adventure and history, it does not relate to the fairy tale of Cinderella. Adeline's childhood is harsh and she has to find her own ways without a fairy godmother. At the start of multiple chapters, the year is written and historical events are told, which gives the reader historical knowledge. Another historical scene is when Nai Nai was telling Adeline about her bound feet (page 7 & 8). There are lots of dramas and adventures that go on in Adeline's world, which relate to the themes. These genres make the book harder to put down. The plot and structure in this autobiography makes the story of Adeline's childhood flow better. The orientation started by Niang marrying Adeline's father. At Adeline's birth her mother died so Adeline was treated badly and unfairly. In the complication, Adeline was unwanted from the start. She was sent away to an orphanage because she was wanted by no one. In the resolution Adeline decided after winning the playwriting competition that she wanted to be a writer. She studied medicine at Oxford University with Third Brother. The reflection is that no matter what your conditions are you can achieve anything like Adeline did. In the story Adeline read a newspaper article that said "It was announced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Compare/Contrast Memoir Compare/Contrast Memoir Where you live may determine your story, but not who you are. Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Mah and the Diary of Anne Frank both depict the story of a normal young girl, who both struggle with similar family problems but are highly influenced by the setting of their society they live in. However, Falling Leaves is written by an older woman relating the life of Yen Mah, from her earliest childhood memories in China to her current old age in California; Anne Frank is the direct thoughts and events chronicled the same day they occur, with minimal revisions. The juvenile tone of young adults grappling with the struggles of their respective societies, along with the variation in diction contribute to the various similarities and differences within these memoirs. Compare: Young Girl struggles with family/society Both Yen Mah and Anne Frank depict the blunt similarities of the emotions of a young adult and how they react to the people... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The diary doesn't usually sugar coat horrific events, nor does it bog itself down with heavy and emotional passages, unlike Falling Leaves, which is written by Yen Mah as a adult women who is recalling her childhood, therefore being more in depth and analytical about her past decisions, taking a more objective stance.Due to the author being a young and naive teenager, the story doesn't have much technical facts or figures. Instead, it mostly describes the thoughts of a regular adolescent girl, such as boys she likes, her relationship with her friends, and her struggle with self identity and finding her niche in the world. The tone of her diary naive and juvenile, intertwined with bouts of sarcasm, humor and irony. Much like a normal teenagers brain, which is riddled with conflicting emotions, there are splashes of anger, jealousy, confusion, and hope thrown into the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Chinese Cinderella By Adeline Yen Mah Chinese Cinderella is an autobiography of Adeline Yen Mah. Adeline Yen Mah, the Chinese Cinderella was not as lucky as the original western Cinderella who got the help from others. Their lives are totally different. Her family considered her bad luck because her mother died giving birth to her. Although Adeline won prizes at school, they were not enough to compensate for what she really yearns for the love and understanding of herfamily. Chinese Cinderella tells the story of Perseverance, also that is also what I need. Perseverance is an admirable trait that Adeline exhibits throughout the novel, leading the reader to believe that anything can be overcome with faith and hard work. Since my childhood, my parents gave me a lot of expectations, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the book, Adeline wrote "I was winning the medal every week and wearing it constantly. I knew this displeased by siblings, especially Big Sister and Second Brother, but it was the only way to make father take notice and be proud of me. (Mah)" Adeline was through her performance and the personality from her strong effort. Adeline's flaunting of the medal can be seen as another show of excessive pride within the novel but it is instead the means through which a young girl looks to gain acceptance within an uncaring family. Same as in the real world, "More than 61 million children – about one–fifth of the kids in China – live in villages without their parents. (Wan)" These kids loss of parental care, phone is the only way to have a communication between kids and their parents. The things most parents care about you just ask you how your grades are, how good is the exam? The child can only try to get good marks in exams to get the praise and care of the parents; otherwise it is only a scolded. The pride over that measly medal and marks show the sadness that is Adeline's and children day to day, and parents only caring when their children receive it. Nowadays, children only truly mature when they realize that their achievement should only matter if it makes themselves happy, not their parents. As long as children are stuck in this dependent cycle, they will never be content and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Falling Leaves Character Analysis Central Idea In Falling Leaves, Adeline Yen Mah illustrated the desire of wanting to be accepted and appreciated by your family. This is significant because most of the conflict in the book revolves around Adeline not be appreciated by her family.. In the book she does everything she can to be accepted by her parents, like doing what her parents want her to, even as an adult Key Event #1 When the HUnling Yens moved into a new house in Shanghai, the division amidst thefamily was first shown. Niang, Father, Franklin, and Susan all slept downstairs in the large bedrooms, while everyone else slept upstairs. I decided to act and consult a lawyer immediately. They had given me permission to do so" (176). This shows that even though during this part of the book she was in a bad place in her life, but she still wanted permission from her parents to end the situation. Key Event #5 Adeline seeks the acceptance of Niang and Father even after they had died. Adeline feels excluded once again when niang and Father's wills are read,on both occasions she is left out and does not receive any of the inheritance. She later finds out that her father did want to include her in his will, but Niang changed it at the last minute. This key event is resolved because Adeline finds out that her father did care about her and appreciate her; he left part of his original inheritance to her in the original will and excluded the children he had disowned. Protagonist's Personal ID In the beginning of the book, Adline does not feel as if she is important and she is repeatedly told this by he parents. Adeline is continuously sent because because her father and Niang simply do not want anything to do with ehr, Mah observed, "Yeye knew. • 6. Chinese Cinderella Research Paper Chinese Cinderella, written by Adeline Yen Mah is a depressing story because of the hardships Adeline has to cope with like being cognizant of the fact she's an unwanted child, constantly being blamed for her mothers death, and lastly being looked upon unfairly by Niang and father. Adeline was like a flower whose stem was broken. Because she had all the potential and brilliance in the world, but she didn't have the one thing she really needed, support. From a reader's standpoint, Chinese Cinderella is a depressing book because of the lack of care and nourishment Adeline obtained throughout her entire childhood. I like to refer Adeline's upbringing to a bag of Original Lays potato chips, sure they're average, but they aren't near as satisfying... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then you blink and that presence you once felt with your mother is gone forever. Suddenly the attention is shifted to your mom, but it's too late. Little did Adeline know that looking into her mother's eyes was the last connection she would ever share with her. Finally, you are brought home for the first time and everyone is extatic to see you until they realize that its just you and dad. Everybody is asking where mom is. Within one minute of explanation you are dreaded by most of your family. Unfortunately that was the case for Adeline. Due to being blamed for her mother's death, her family ignored her. One time Adeline came home from home school and had a silver medal pinned to her chest because she got an award for leading her class in academics. Instead of earning praise from her Second Brother she received a loud smack to the face. Second Brother proclaimed,"This'll teach you not to show off your medal!"(pg.9) Another time she was awarded at assembly for her outstanding grades, but not one of her family members was there to congratulate her. Adeline's siblings also taunted and toyed with her as if she was a puppet on their strings. During a family meal, father was vaunting about Adeline,"You must continue to bring honor to your family name,"(pg.11) in front of Adeline's siblings after eating the main course. • 7. Adeline Yen Mah's Characters In Chinese Cinderella Adeline Yen Mah had done an extraordinary job at writing Chinese Cinderella. I believe she has done an even better job at achieving her goal. The author hints multiple reasons for writing this story. Her dedication page was written for the children who weren't loved by their parents. In Mah's dedication page, She says that you are not alone and to use her story to encourage yourself. This leads me to infer that she wrote this because she wants to comfort unwanted children. However, I believe Mah had more intentions for writing this story. "It was painful and difficult for me to write this,"(Preface xi). Mah had never told anyone the truth about her family. Everyone thought Mah had a loving family until they went to her home for a surprise party."... Tell them to gun dan (get lost) and never come here again,"(Chapter 14, 115). She took a slap from her stepmother and was humiliated in front of all her friends and schoolmates. People go to the therapist for these kinds of things, but she stayed strong. Even after years of rejection, she tried to reunite with her family. She wrote a book called Falling Leaves only after finding out that she had been cut out of Niang's will. "...But she felt compelled to [write the story],"(Preface xi). For us to truly understand why this upset here, she shows us what her life was. In an interview, you can see that Mah still gets emotional with her story because all she wanted was love from her family. She wrote Chinese Cinderella because she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Adeline Yen Mah's Chinese Cinderella Chinese Cinderella is a very moving story that will touch your heart. It is about a young girl, Adeline Yen Mah, who goes through many hardships throughout her life. Chinese Cinderella, by Adeline Yen Mah, is an inspirational story about an unwanted and unloved daughter who tries her best to make her family notice and appreciate her. Adeline gets back up everytime she gets abused. She gets whipped and slapped for every little bad thing she does. Adeline said, "Niang's blows must have caused a nosebleed (p.115)." Niang believes Adeline is showing off when her friends surprise her, which isn't true. I don't believe she should be slapped for something that isn't even her fault. "Father ordered me to lie facedown on my bed and whipped me (p.104)." Since Adeline went to a party instead of school, Father's punishment was to whip her. I don't think Adeline will learn her lesson, she will just be scared. Talking to Adeline would have helped her realize right from wrong and learn from her mistakes. One continues to read a book when it is interesting and if they can make a connection to it. But, what makes a book interesting? There are many ways authors attract their readers. Authors use different techniques like, circle chronological order style, evoking strong emotions, and creating complex characters to shock and lure their readers. Many authors use circle chronological order style when writing their book. "Instead of simply beginning at the beginning, you begin at the end. Many essays and pieces of fiction use this technique. They begin by talking about or hinting at how the story ends, then go back to the beginning" (David Lee Finkle). In A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Ishmael Beah uses this style of writing in the prologue. He starts the story off in New York, where his high school friends were questioning his past life in the war. The page is headed "New York , 1998." "My high school friends have begun to suspect I haven't told them the full story of my life...'Why did you leave Sierra Leone?' 'Because there is a war'" (Beah 4). This shows that, at the end, Ishmael lived through a war and made it out of Sierra Leone before he attended high school. • 36. Theme Of Chinese Cinderella On Google.com the word "significant" refers to something that is "sufficiently great or important to be worthy of attention; noteworthy." For something to have a significant impact on someone, it must be meaningful, relevant, and important. As stated by Thomas Hardy, "A story must be exceptional enough to justify its telling; it must have something more unusual to relate than the ordinary experience of every average man and woman." It must have something meaningful, something that pulls a reader in– so that the audience can laugh when the character laughs or cry when the character cries. It must be significant. A story that fits the definition of "significant" is one by Adeline Yen Mah. In the novel "Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter," Adeline Yen Mah pulls the reader in by using the themes of loneliness and acceptance – something that is faced by nearly all at some point in their life. What makes Yen Jun–ling's story so engaging are the emotions as well as the obstacles she went though. The circumstances she faced, even though not to the same extent, can be somewhat relatable. The feeling of loneliness, for instance, is an emotion that numerous people face at least once in their life. Jun–Ling was always treated as the outsider– the unwanted child, a burden to her family. At school she had friends, but she was never allowed to meet up and play with them and when she came home it was as if she didn't exist. When she was given a little duckling, named ... • 37. Chinese Cinderella Quotes "Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted are the greatest poverty." (Mah xii) Throughout her entire childhood, Adeline constantly feels lonely and unwanted. In the memoir, Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, Adeline's life from age four to fourteen is very depressing. She is abused, forgotten and excluded, and loses important people. Throughout the story, Adeline is abused mentally, physically, and verbally. Her stepmother is the cause of most of this, and often slaps, hits, and yells at her. She once screamed, "Not only are you a liar and a thief, but you are manipulative as well. Nothing will ever come of you. The problem is that you have bad blood from your mother. You don't deserve to be fed and housed here. Girls like you should be sent away. You don't belong in this house!" (Mah 103) just because Adeline went to a birthday party. This is an example of Adeline being abused verbally. This shows how harsh and mean her stepmother Niang is. For her entire childhood, she has disliked herself. At age seven, she was... I meant so little to him, I was such a nobody, that he didn't even remember my name!" (Mah 124–125.) This made Adeline feel very neglected. He forgot her age and birthday as well. This shows how little her parents care and how uninvolved they are in her life. Her parents decided to send her away because they thinks she has bad behavior, and when they dropped her off at the orphanage–school, "Neither of them bothered to look up or wave goodbye. I watched the taillights of Father's car disappear and an awful loneliness sank in. They had tossed me aside like a piece of garbage." (Mah 127) This shows how unimportant she is to them. • 38. Barriers In Chinese Cinderella Every adolescent has struggles and problems that need to be resolved throughout their life, however, one constant is that their parents are always there for them. Whether they fix the problem themselves, or help their child through it, the child almost always receives the help they require. A quote from "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost helps describe what it is like when the parents are not there for the child. "Something there is that doesn't love a wall, that sends the frozen–ground–swell under it, and spills the upper boulders in the sun; and makes gaps even two can pass abreast" (1). In this instance, the child is the wall, and the parent is the person that does not love it. Slowly, the child will break apart, and eventually collapse without the affection and support they need. In Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah, this is one of the few unfortunate exceptions where the child doesn't acquire assistance from any parent. Adeline had many occurrences within her community that changed her mentality, one being that her self–esteem declined, and made her feel like she needs to prove herself worthy, no matter the circumstance. Adeline's step–mother, Niang, never fails to be uncouth towards her, not just by damaging her self–esteem, but also through verbal and physical abuse (whipping, hitting, etc.). "I approached her gingerly, trembling with terror. She slapped my face so hard I almost fell... ...she slapped me with the back of her hand against my other cheek" (Mah 114–115). ...
