ABC High School is a private college that delivers education to students from years’ 8 to 12. The campus sits on approximately 5 hectares of manicured grounds, 6 kilometres from the CBD of Adelaide. It consists of a large two-story building containing the majority of the classrooms (22) and administration offices, a dedicated music and arts suite with two classrooms, a resource centre, and an indoor gymnasium containing two full sized basketball courts. There is also a large outdoor oval, tennis courts and practice cricket nets.
The school has a modern approach to education and focuses on the use of technology in the classroom. All students have their own iPads and are used daily in a variety of subjects including science and maths. These are connected to the schools’ wireless network which has recently been upgraded to cover the majority of the campus and support the device density in each classroom. In addition there are 2 purpose built computer rooms located in the resource centre containing 30 modern PCs each, and 4 trolleys of 40 wireless laptops which can be borrowed on an adhoc basis for classroom use. The students also have access to 6 printers and photocopies located throughout the campus.
The campus network has just undergone a major refresh which includes a replacement of all existing networking hardware, excluding wireless. The new network delivers 10Gb interconnects and 1Gb to all end devices though a combination of both OM1 and OM3 fibre for vertical cabling and CAT5e and CAT6 for horizontal cabling. The schools’ WAN has also just been upgraded from a 20Mbps to 100Mbps to support the increased traffic due to the iPad usage. Both the logical and physical diagrams have been included in this case study for your reference and should be accurate and reflect the recent changes.
The school currently has a 10 year old PBX connection which is becoming ever difficult to upgrade and maintain. It currently consists of the following components:
- 1 x Ericsson 50 PBX
- 1 x Reception handset that provides the ability for call forwarding, call holding, directory lookup and night mode.
- 30 x basic desktop phones with caller ID
- 6 x wireless antennas with school building and courtyard coverage for 4 cordless phones
- 10 x external lines bound to 1 incoming number (Reception)
- 10 x external line bound to 1 incoming number (Management x 5, IT administrator, Finance, Canteen, Gym, Resource Centre)
- Incoming calls are supplied via an E1 connection from a telco.
As the school wishes to install handsets in each classroom, the current PBX does not have the handset capacity. This combined with the age of the current PBX, it has approved the finance and installation of a VoIP solution to be rolled out throughout the school.
The Voice over IP Project must meet the following requirements:
1. The reception desk must have a physical phone capable of handling several incoming calls, place calls on hold, internal transfer and at lea ...

A response to this RPF in the form of a business proposal
You are to respond to the request for proposal in the form of a
business proposal. In this business proposal you are to “sell”
your solution for the schools’ communication needs. You are
trying to convince the schools’ management to award your team
the contract and thus get their business. Things I would suggest
you consider are pricing, company information (make it up),
project planning, warranty, maintenance and support,
justification for the change in communication technology, etc. I
am sure there are other things you can include, this is just a
start for you. This needs to be a very concise document which
gets to the point. The management of the school do not have
time to read hundreds of pages, please keep this to at most 10
pages.

For the first deliverable, you need to research what technology
is available that will meet the requirements of the customer.
You are then to provide a complete list of equipment to be
purchased and provide an estimated price. Please ensure this
equipment will fully function with the existing network
equipment. In the second deliverable, you need to produce a
detailed step by step guide on how to install and configure the
hardware and software you have recommended. Please ensure
the guide covers phone installation, any additional networking
hardware and/or software installation, configuration information
for the telephony service, modifications required to the existing
networking configuration, and anything else you believe the
local IT administrator would benefit from following. You can
make use of wireshark if you wish to test your configuration
prior documenting it. You should also make use of user guides,
web blogs, and your own experience when putting together such
a document.
Please remember you DO NOT need to justify the project itself,
the school has already approved it. You may need to justify the
equipment selection though. The business case and justification
for the entire project will be the second assignment.
