Techlube HD is a water-based, high performance polymer lubricant formulated for use in difficult cable installation operations. It was tested for compatibility with various cable jacket materials and properties according to IEEE standards. The testing showed that Techlube HD did not negatively impact the physical or electrical properties of PVC, PE, CPE, natural rubber, SBR, polychloroprene, nitrile-butadiene, or CSPE cable jackets. Additionally, it did not cause failures when tested on an extremely stress crack prone polyethylene. Based on these test results, Techlube HD is compatible with all cable jackets and insulations and is recommended for use as an installation lubricant to reduce friction during cable installation.

Power Cable Compatibility
Background:
Techlube HD Heavy Duty Cable Lubricant is a water based, high performance polymer lubricant. It was especially
formulated to provide superior friction reduction in high shear, difficult electrical utility and telecommunications cable
placing operations. It dries slowly to form a thin friction reducing film which retains its slip.
Techlube HD has been proven compatible with all forms of cable jacket materials when tested according to the IEEE
Guide P1210/D10 “Standard Tests for Determining Compatibility of Cable Lubricants with Wire and Cable”, prepared
by the 12-46 Task Group of the Test/Measurements Subcommittee of the Insulated Conductors Committee of the IEEE
Power Engineering Society. The following is a summary of the test performed and the results.
1. Physical Property Effects
Accelerated Ageing Test
Purpose
To determine the effects of cable lubricant on the physical properties of cable jacket materials.
Cable Jacket Materials Tested:
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Jacket
Black Polyethylene (PE) Jacket
Thermoplastic Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE) Jacket
Natural Rubber Jacket
Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) Jacket
Polychloroprene Jacket
Nitrile-Butadiene / Polyvinyl Chlorine Jacket
Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene (CSPE) Jacket
Thermoset Polyethylene (CPE) Jacket
Procedure
• Test Condition 1.
Samples were immersed in the lubricant at 100 C +/- 1 C for a period of 5 days (120 hours) according to the
method describes in ICC Guide P1210/D10.

2. • Test Condition 2
Samples were immersed in the lubricant at 50 C +/- 1 C for a period of 30 days (720 hours) according to the
procedure described in ICC Guide P1210/D10.
Samples were checked for percent weight gain (loss) and measured for any change in their physical dimensions and
appearance.
Results:
None of the samples experienced excessive or unacceptable weight gain or significant change in their physical
dimensions. There were no deleterious effects observed.
2. Electrical Property Effects
Volume Resistivity Test
Purpose:
To determine the effects of the cable lubricant on cable coverings which are semi-conducting or unshielding cables with
exposed primary insulation.
Cable Materials Tested:
Semi-conductive cross-linked polyethylene was exposed on a cable section by removing the exterior jacketing.
Procedure:
The test was conducted according tot he procedure described in ICEA Publication T-25-485 entitled “Guide for
Establishing Stability of Volume Resistivity for Conducting Polymeric Components of Power Cables” , for a duration
of 42 days. Upon completion, a final high temperature test was performed to represent the transient high temperatures
possible from overloading. Samples were prepared as recommended in ICC P1210/D10 guide condition as described in
5.11.
Results:
In no case did the volume resistivity determined at the final temperature, or any volume resistivity determined during
the 42 day test period, exceed the maximum values listed in Table 2 (50,000 ohm-con, ICC P1210/D10).
3. Physical Property Effects
Environmental Stress Cracking – Polyethylene
Purpose:
To determine the effects of the cable lubricant on the environmental stress crack tendency of extremely stress crack
prone polyethylene.
Cable Jacket Materials:
DYNK Union Carbide
DFD 6005NT Lot#236102
Low Density Polyethylene
Procedure:
The test was performed according to the procedure described in ASTM Test D1693, Condition A. The lubricant was
diluted to 10% in deionised water to simulate worst case situation (water filled conduit).

3. Result:
There were no failures observed in any of the 10 samples tested. Acceptable results with this extremely sensitive and
stress crack prone polyethylene is indicative that the lubricant will definitely be compatible with the newer, much less
stress crack prone polyethylene cable jacket materials currently in use.
Conclusion:
Based on the above test results according to published guidelines, Techlube HD Heavy Duty Cable Lubricnat is found
to be compatible with all types of cable jackets and insulations and is recommended for use as an installation aid to
reduce friction during the installation of such cables into conduit systems.
