1. BBFC
BY THALIA BARRETT
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), before 1985 known as British Board of
Film Censors, is a non-governmental organization, founded by the film industry in 1912
and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films within the United
Kingdom.
There are several aspects to which they have to take into consideration when
classifying any film into its appropriate section, this is mainly decided through the
assessment of overarching factors which may influence the films tone and the impact it
has upon its audience through the choice of context. Such factors include:
Levels of discrimination (offensive context), in both how it is presented and
whether or not it’s promoting anything.
Drugs, whether if simply refers to the use of drugs or is trying to influence
viewers.
Horror, how frequently it’s demonstrated, the length it’s portrayed for and the
degree of detail to which it is presented.
Imitable behavior, this includes a variety of degrees from anti-social behavior to
easily accessible criminal behavior.
Language, ranging from offensive and explicit language to religious, racial or
even sexual verbal conducts used.
Nudity, whether it includes either natural nudity (without any sexual intentions) or
otherwise.
Sexual content, the degree and detail from a simple kiss to more graphic
content development.
Themes, how they are used, whether they are promoting anything or how they
are treated and represented.
Degree of violence, to want extreme extents its used, how frequently used,
whether not its propaganda, whilst also covering different aspect of violence
including sexual and others.
After assessing the context of the film, it is then classified by age groups as to whom it’s
appropriate for viewing. The age ratings assortment is from Uc/U (Universal),
2. PG(Parent Guidance), 12,12A, 15, 18 and 18R.
After we assesed these values and considered all aspects of classification we decided
to classify our film ‘Immunity’ as a . We have come to this conclusion due to the
fact that within our film there will be no conventions of discrimination, drugs, or nudity
present, this will immediately also make our auidience less restricted and wider as it will
be more assesible rather then it being an 18 rating. We specifically classified our film as
a 15 because of its moderate use of horror, violence and the themes involved such as
death and terror. The significance is the treatment of the themes as the use of death
within ‘Immunity’ will be mild to such an exstent that the audience will not dwell upon the
cicumstance to which they are applied in. The use of imitable behaviour is mild for
example in some scene whilst some zombies are attcking others are following
characters around, this although it is not promoting the concept of following people it
would be easy for a viewer to be able to acses the opportunity to do such actions. The
utilisation of language isnt a significant problem as it does not include any inopropriate
linguistics within the film opening as any narration used will be that of natural diolouge,
to which does not include even any mentioning of sexual, religious or racial assosiations
as the level of offensive language used is none.
Discrimination None present
Drugs None present
Horror Mild usage
Imitable behavior Mild usage
Language None inappropriate language used
Nudity None present
Sex None present
3. Themes Death, Terror
Violence Mild usage
This rating is also well concluded as it clearly succeeds in including our target audience
of males over 35, this means that our film will not only suit our TA well but also enable a
wider range of viewers to enjoy and watch our film.
