2. HOW DID WE IDENTIFY OUR TARGET
AUDIENCE?
Before finalizing our project, my group had to be certain on
our target audience. We did this by conducting quantative
research into 16-35 year olds opinions and ideas on the
zombie film genre. This then helped us conduct our final
piece in the best interest of our target audience.
3. “WOULD YOU RATHER SEE A MALE OR FEMALE
STAR IN A ZOMBIE FILM?”
We conducted a survey on surveymonkey,
in which we asked people questions about
our film. Many people prefer to see a male
in star in a zombie film, the male in a zombie
film usually is the type of character to lead
the group and to survive events that are
unlikely to survive. This conforms to propps
narrative theory as the hero in a film is
usually seen as a male character. From this
data, we were able to make a fairly easy
decision to make our main character a male.
This research also helped us construct our
piece fluently. Furthermore this will help us
to attract the biggest audience possible and
they will enjoy it more.
4. “would you watch a zombie film is the main character was a female”
We asked this question to see whether the sexuality of the main character mattered,
and to also see whether the sexuality of any character mattered. The majority said
yes, however a minority said no. so to be safe, we made our main character a male,
however a female supporting leading role comes in later on in the film.
5. “WOULD YOU WATCH A ZOMBIE FILM BASED ON
A CHARACTERS ETHNICITY?”
We asked this question, to see whether ethnicity mattered when deciding who our main
character would be, and 100% said no. this meant that we could freely choose our main
characters ethnicity, which made It easier to decide who our main character would be,
however we earlier decided that ethnicity shouldn’t be a factor to consider when
choosing our character.
6. “which would you prefer to see in a zombie film?”
This question was crucial for feedback, when planning and constructing our film.
This is because it helps us decide which conventions to use, write our plot and story
and decide our narrative. 66% of people said that they would prefer action, blood
and fighting, which is the equivalent to 2/3rds. Therefore, we chose to base our film
around a zombie chase and survival narrative, with lots of blood and gore, however
we made sure that there were some psychological aspects that we could add in.
7. “are you easy to scare, in your opinion?”
This question allowed us to determine whether our audience was easy to scare, making
it easier to use more obvious and direct conventions to scare them and appeal to the
horror genre. Therefore, this helps us to appeal to a bigger target audience. However
this question does not allow us to see to what extent they get scared, making it harder to
assess which techniques to use.
8. AGE CERTIFICATE
For our target audience, we have chosen to have a 15-40 range. This is
because the narrative appeals to a 15-25 year old range, however the
action scenes and some old school techniques to apply fear and
suspense could appeal to the slightly older, middle aged audience. As
it Is quite a harsh sub-genre, we thought that the zombie genre would
only appeal to a certain age group, so we had to make our target
audience age gap fairly small, so we thought 15-25 was appropriate.
