Carbon is element number 6 on the periodic table with an atomic weight of 12.010. It is a nonmetal that can form four bonds with other elements and occurs in all living organisms as the basis of organic chemistry. Carbon was discovered in prehistory but was not recognized as a distinct element until the 18th century. It exists naturally in the forms of diamonds, coal, and graphite and is made inside stars. Carbon can form over 10 million compounds and its name comes from the Latin word for charcoal.
