The Epistolary Literary Form Of Pamela By Samuel Richardson
Pamela by Samuel Richardson is a famous 18th century novel which arguably popularizes the epistolary literary form. Presenting Pamela Andrews
as a young maidservant, she undergoes a series of trials in which she defends her virtue from Mr. B. to later reforming him and getting married.
While it does present the narrative of the reformation of a potential rake, the romance between two characters of different social classes and the
eventual social climbing to achieve a happy ending, the real interest is in the literary form. The main character writes in letters and, later, in journal
entries, recounting the experiences she's undergone to her parents (and to the reader). The person who reads Pamela is enthralled into a narrative due
to the feeling of secrecy. Richardson uses the epistolary form to allow Pamela to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The usage of letters and journals permit a sense of direct intimacy with Pamela due to the two literary forms seemingly belonging in the private sphere.
The word 'seemingly' is emphasized due to the reality going on throughout the novel. Pamela expects her letters and journals to be read by her parents
and she believes God can read her thoughts, or, at the very least, the words she puts down. Despite having an intended readership, it is a small and
private group of people. Moreover, it is through these two mediums, Pamela can confidently write her thoughts because she believes she knows who
her readers are. Due to this confidentiality, it is easy for the reader to feel connected and attached to the main character. For example, in letter 25, she
states "for to who but you can I vent my Griefs" (Richardson 60). The 'you' invokes the feeling of intimacy. She can only rely on 'you' to discuss her
inner thoughts,

Lord Of The Flies By William Shakespeare
Ralph rolled out onto the beach where the water meets the sand. All he could do was pray to God that something would save him – a ship, a plane, a
helicopter, anything. He looked up and saw nothing but the blue sky. The savages rushed toward Ralph. He did not run or try to fight. He knew
his fate and could only embrace it. He lay on the sand and waited. Jack stood over Ralph with a satisfied grin on his face. He turned and faced his
Hunters. "Everyone! This is what we 've waited for all day. We will all get a chance to pick at him. But the officials go first! Me, then Roger, then
everyone can sort out the order for themselves!" He turned back to Ralph. "Any last words?" Ralph looked up to Jack and motioned for him to
come closer. Jack leaned down only to have Ralph spit in his face. Almost immediately after, Jack thrust his spear into Ralph 's neck. His blood
flowed freely and rapidly. And finally, once he lay in a pool of his own blood, he was no more. Jack and his tribe screamed at the top of their lungs
and rejoiced. They were now the only tribe on the island. Roger walked up to the fresh kill and stuck his spear into Ralph 's forehead. He moved
out of the way and the rest of the tribe rushed toward the dead body. Jack walked away and thought. He had just burned down the entire island, what
is he to do? There were no more pigs or fruit. What would they eat? How would they bathe? Drink? He cast his worries aside. He 'd cross that bridge
when he came to it. He turned

A Short Story : Christmas : A Story Of Christmas
It was the two days before Christmas. Santa was getting every excited for his trip and he was also getting very tired. "Ho, ho, ho, ho, what do we have
here!" he said with a smile. He watched a girl crying. He was confused.
He was thinking to himself, "Did someone tell her that I did not exist? Did her parents get mad at her?" then one of Santa's elves, Sprinkles, came
inside his office, "Sprinkles can you please run a report on this child?"
"I am on my way, sir!" said sprinkles. A few minutes passed and Mr. Claus was talking toMrs. Claus about the girl.
"Mr. Claus I got the report!" said Sprinkles. "Her name is Rarity, she is 9 years old, she has a cat named Oliver, and she has no parents, so she is a
foster chi–" Probably that is why she is crying," said Mr. Claus "She is a foster child. I think I remember her from three years. She was so joyful and
she is on the nice list. The house where she used to live was every joyful it was beautiful with all the lights." Santa said, while looking at his nice
list from last year. "And now she is sad and crying for whatever reason. I can not believe what so much can happen in three years," said Santa.
Sprinkles just wanted to cry but then she would be embarrassed, but who cared. Then she started crying. Mr. Claus was worried for Rarity. He wanted
to know more about this special child. There is just something about this child that no other child has.
"Santa what are you thinking of?" said sprinkles.

The Watergate Scandal
Watergate, the greatest scandal of the 20th century, remains a shrouded mystery. Early on the morning of June 17, 1972, there was a break
–in and
several burglars were arrested inside the office of the Democratic National Committee's headquarters in the Watergate Office complex building located
in Washington, D.C. Thus began a series of events that would shake the public's confidence in its most visible symbol of American authority and
prestige: the presidency of Richard Nixon. A seemingly random robbery at a Washington, D.C. building leads to the first presidential resignation in
American history. We will discuss the following events surrounding the Watergate break
–in: when did the break–in occur, how was Nixon connected to
the break–in. We will also discuss the events surrounding the discovery of the tapes, the issues involved in trying to get the tapes from President Nixon
and what is the "18 1/2 minutes of silence". Finally, throughout this paper we will also include Archibald Cox the first Watergate special prosecutor.
This was no ordinary robbery that happened on the morning of June 17, 1972. The burglars were connected to President Richard Nixon's reelection
campaign, and the prowlers had been caught while attempting to wiretap phones and steal secret documents. The historians of this decade are not sure
whether or not President Richard Nixon knew about the Watergate espionage operation before it happened. However, History.com states, President
Nixon, okayed

A Moveable Feast By Ernest Hemingway
While reading A Moveable Feast, I felt immersed into Ernest Hemingway's world and developed a better understanding of him with a human
experience. This novel provides an inside look on both, Hemingway's time in Paris in the 1920s and the time at the end of his life leading up to his
premature death. If one is familiar with his life, and especially his later years, A Moveable Feast gives insight into his life at the time of writing his
memoir. The text itself is about Paris, but the reflection comes from an older Hemingway who was sentimental, longing and nostalgic. Regardless of
the comments from family, friends and academics, interpreting the text itself in A Moveable Feast is the best way to learn about Hemingway and his
mindset during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Unlike many great books, there are two versions of A Moveable Feast which were released by individuals separated by two generations. First, there is
the 1964 version which offers the completed and unified memoir on Hemingway's early years in Paris. It is important to understand that Hemingway
never completed the memoir and his fourth wife, Mary Hemingway, performed much of the editing and final touches. In contrast, the 2009 version is
believed by most to be more accurate to Hemingway's original manuscripts, but it does not offer a unified story. Even though these versions are very
different from one another they both offer valuable insight on Hemingway as a person.
Since A Moveable Feast was left unfinished,

The Romantic Period : An Explosion Of Artistic Energy From...
The Romantic Period was an explosion of artistic energy from 1790–1820, which began in Germany and quickly spread to the United States, almost all
of Europe, and Latin America. Those in this time idealized nature and embraced the uncivilized, and imagination was a key component to their writing.
Steven Kreis, author for The History Guide writes, "...one power possessed by the Romantic...was imagination..." (Kreis 1). The idea was the rejection
of the Enlightenment and the acceptance of individuality and self–expression. One big player in the Romantic Era, and considered to be one of the
founders of the movement, was Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He was born in 1772 to a clergyman in England and is the tenth and youngest child.
Coleridge attended Cambridge from 1791 to 1794 but never graduated. He met William Wordsworth, another founder of the Romantic Movement, in
1797 and produced his best work with him. Coleridge was also one of the first to incorporate conversational poetry into his work due to
Wordsworth. He later went to Germany with Wordsworth and Wordsworth's sister Dorothy, but the siblings were miserable and it eventually led
them back to the Lake District. Upon their return, Coleridge got sick and became addicted to opium in order to relieve his pain. The opium
completely changed him and brought about what was known as his "wandering phase". In 1813, he faced his addiction and went to a doctor, but
couldn't overcome it and died in 1834. He was a very dreamy person,

Clarissa's Way of Death Essay examples
Clarissa's Way of Death
In Clarissa, Samuel Richardson finds "an exemplar to her sex." But her story does not provide a model to live by, as such a qualification may lead
one to expect. Only in the afterlife does Clarissa presumably receive what she deserves. The life suggested by her example is untenable. Clarissa's death
is the inevitable result of her unrealistic, unimpeachable virtue В a virtue that is defined less by what she does than by what she will permit. Her death
serves not only a narrative end in the novel, but the demands of psychological realism. Richardson respects the conclusion made inevitable by the very
"divinity" of Clarissa's personality. This heroine can have no other conclusion. Her death–drive is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"I have sometimes wished that it had pleased God to have taken me in my last fever, when I had everybody's love and good opinion" followed by "but
oftener that I had never been distinguished by my grandfatherЕ since that distinction has estranged" her from her brother and sister (2). We see her
wishing for a state in which she is universally loved, a state she once existed in, and that she would eagerly regain. Alongside this, she decries that
very exceptionalness that earns her acclaim. She finds that she cannot be "an exemplar" and also be universally loved. This is the essential paradox of
her personality. It becomes necessary for these death–wishes to be in earnest, as only death could preserve the unblemished state she once existed in.
What sets Clarissa apart is what damns her. "Your merit is your crime" AnnaHowe tells her (74), "You can no more change your nature than they can
theirs." But this intractability is Clarissa's inheritance from the Harlowes. Anna Howe says, significantly, of Clarissa: "I am fitter for this world than
you; you for the next than me" (19). Not only is this an apposite description, it sets up the incontrovertible opposition between the two "worlds" that
determines the impracticability of Clarissa's life. Howe might as well be saying, you are fitter to be dead than I. Anna's observation describes the
difficulty of persisting in a state of grace. Innocence, and

Jack And Ralph Relationship In Lord Of The Flies
Jack and Ralph's Relationship
The Lord of the Flies is a novel about two dozen boys who are stranded on a deserted island during World War II. In The Lord of the Flies, Ralph and
Jack's relationship directly affects tribal decisions and development. Jack and Ralph's differences in opinion, development of savagery, competitive
mind set and fight for power cause difficulty within the tribe.
Jack and Ralph's negative relationship develops there differences in opinion. Jack doesn't take it serious that his pig hunters are not contributing to
building the forts. "Wewant meat." "Well, we haven't got any yet. And we need shelters." (Golding 51). Jack does not understand the importance of
having the shelters built as much as Ralph does. Likewise, Jack neglects the fire in order to go on a pig hunt. This causes a ship to not notice and
to bypass the island. "There was a ship. Out there you said you'd keep the fire going and you let it out!" (Golding 70). Jack doesn't see the
importance in the rescue fire and neglects the job he was given by Ralph. Ralph makes the rule that the only fire allowed, is the one on top of the
mountain. (Golding 81). This insures that the hunters keep the fire going because they will need it to cook pigs. Ralph does not see the importance of
catching pigs as Jack does and only sees the importance of their rescue. In conclusion, Jack and Ralph neglect one another's priorities, leading the
development of a negative relationship.

Dear Society: Unmasking the Narrative and Ideological Elements of Joseph Andrews
After its publication in 1740, Samuel Richardson's Pamela became wildly commercially successful and has been described as one of the earliest
multi–media events, spawning translations, stage adaptations, merchandise, and literary responses (Turner 71). These literary responses largely
imitated Richardson's style, yet challenged the irreproachable virtue of his protagonist. They served to provide an alternate perspective to Pamela's
tale, typically portraying her as a scheming social climber. Henry Fielding participated in this literary backlash, publishing his own parody Shamela in
1741. However, the next year he wrote Joseph Andrews, which, while inarguably ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Regardless of the ideological differences, both types of literary responses adopted Richardson's epistolary style, but Henry Fielding's later response
Joseph Andrews employs an omniscient narrator. In contrast to the limited voice of the letter writer, the omniscient point of view allows the reader to
hear many voices. Joseph Andrews' myriad characters expose their true intentions, for with each changing situation, their chosen words benefit
themselves. For example, when the beaten and robbed Joseph is brought to Mr. Tow–wouse's inn, Mrs. Tow–wouse does not wish to give the
"vagabond" charity; the surgeon declares there is no hope of Joseph's living; and the clergyman Barnabas rationalizes he can't save him. However
once Betty reveals the thief stole a gold piece from Joseph, all three characters declare Christian and lawful morals in providing the now "gentleman"
with a warm bed and legal representation. Their change reveals that Mrs. Tow–wouse's true desire is to associate with the higher society, and Barnabus
and the surgeon only want to portray their self–purported skills in court (Fielding 29–39). The omniscient narrator lets the readers in on the characters'
secret: their pretense hides their vanity.
This omniscience extends to the narrator himself as he invites the reader to see his own vanity and hypocrisy. When informing the reader about chapter
decisions, the narrator claims this is to allow the reader to "repose

"Hills like White Elephants" is not the normal story where you have a beginning, middle and end. Hemingway gave just enough information so that
readers could draw their own conclusions. The entire story encompasses a conversation between two lovers and leaves the reader with more questions
than answers. Ernest Hemingway was a brilliant writer. People that study Hemingway's works try to gain insight and draw natural conclusions about

The reader can easily view that the couple is merely just passing time. However, several references could lead the reader to believe that the alcohol
consumption is a panacea for the couple. In the opening paragraph, the couple is getting off the train. They wanted to get something to drink. The
couple could have had any beverage to drink but the man suggested they drink beer and then he emphasized "big" ones. This was an indication that
the couple was dealing with something serious. In paragraph 87 when the girl did not want to talk anymore, she then asked if they could have
another beer (Stanford 841). It is human nature to avoid problems, as this couple is doing. Why do people drink? People develop dependencies, to
cope with troubles. In relation to Hemingway, he was among the many literary writers who were alcoholics. He even said, "That all good writers are
drinking writers" (Benedictus). Looking at the circumstances when Hemingway wrote the story, he was very depressed. He became so emotionally
depressed he vowed to kill himself by Christmas if his love affair had not settled (Baker 176). He faced guilt for divorcing Hadley. He also faced
criticism and rejection from his parents. They did not grant approval to his literary works. Hemingway's mother had even referred to one of his works

Savagery In Lord Of The Flies
Civilizations come in many different forms but even the best of them can descend into savagery. The boys being stranded on an island made
civilization very hard to keep, thus making it not very difficult for them to descend into savagery. The first time the boys started to show signs of
savagery was when Jack and some other boys split off and made a "tribe." They put on face paint and hunted the pigs religiously not caring for their
rescue, as all of them had already assumed they weren't going to get rescued. Killing Simon and Piggy showed the true evilness in humanity when
civilization falls. Jack and his tribe went mad after that going on a rampage and to do whatever pleased them. The tribe did not care for the well
being of other and only focused on themselves. Lord of the Flies by William Golding clearly displays the evil in humanity through the loss of
civilization to the descent into savagery, showing that even the best of people can fade into savagery.
When Jack and some of the boys split off into their own group or "tribe" it really showed the evilness in humanity. Ralph and Piggy in "Lord of the
flies" were the leaders and helped keep civilization intact. Without them they became savages and brought out the evil within themselves, Golding
shows this with the narrator saying, "The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away" (Golding 98) . The tribe was obsessed with
hunting pigs and would even chant "Kill the pig! Cut her throat! Spill

The Fat Man In William Golding's Lord Of The Flies
When humans are separated from the society that they have lived in, there will be those who step forward to recreate that society, and there will be
those who seek to control. Throughout William Golding's "Lord of the Flies", Ralph has proven himself to be a Law and Rule obedient boy with an
urge to have order and just. At the moment Ralph discovers the Fat Boy, he immediately is taken by his rule oriented personality and begins his
conversation by questioning the presence of any adults. The whooping, hollering, and dancing could not convince Ralph to join the tribe of Jack and
it's painted–faced members for Ralph believes in being civilized. From the death of Simon, to Piggy, and to his own life bestowed upon a single
thread, Ralph shows immense emotion for not only himself, but for those close around him. From the moment Ralph awoke on the island and met the
Fat Boy, it was apparent that he would be the one to create a system just as the society that he had so unwillingly left behind. At the moment Ralph
discovers the Fat Boy, he immediately is taken by his rule oriented personality and begins his conversation by questioning the presence of any adults.
Instead of panicking, Ralph stays calm and starts figuring out the situation stating, "This is an island. At least I think it's an island. That's a reef out in

Native Bundle Of Rights
The 'bundle of rights' metaphor is mentioned regularly in property law cases. It is a useful way to explain property rights in general. However, it
does not prove to be as useful in forming an accurate concept of native title rights. 'Bundle of rights' was a metaphor used by many courts during
native title land claims such as that of Western Australia v Ward (2002) 213 CLR 1. The metaphor is used in a useful way to assist the Crown in using
its power to extinguish native title rights. Although, this does not determine whether this action were done ethically or not. DEFINITIONS: The
'bundle of rights' metaphor is a broad topic, which is used in relation to many claims in property law. Thus, before explaining and examining its

The joint judgment of the High Court, in Yanner v Eaton agrees with this. However in Ward 'bundle of rights' is considered useful in two respects, the
first being that under traditional law and customs there may be more than one right or interest and the second one is that there may be several types of
rights and interest. Although the 'bundle of rights' may be considered as a useful tool it can also impoverish native title rights by not having a holistic
view when describing the rights. The bundle of rights metaphor is useful only from the view of the Australian legal system as the system wants to be
able to accommodate "partial extinguishment" of native title this will make more sense in due course. Thus, it was useful in Ward as the metaphor
emphasizes that the Native Title Act provides for the concept of partial extinguishment.

Analysis of The Spectacular Spider-Man and The Fairly Odd...
Mass media is a microsystem that influence on a person's values, beliefs, attitudes, and behavior. Mass media is a form of communication that is
viewed by large audiences through medium such as TV, newspaper, book, and internet. Television is the most influential form of media and the way it
has impacted on children's lives. The two children television show that I will be discussing is The Spectacular Spider–Man and The Fairly OddParents.
We will look at it content and the hidden message that these two television show is conveying to young children.
In the Spectacular Spider–Man, the episode Group Therapy show started out with the villains trying to escape from prison and planning to take down
Spider–Man. Peter who is Spider–Man is wearing a black spider suit rather than his regular red spider suit to fight off the vicious villains. The black
spider suit has taken over his body and had fought with the villains the night before. When he wakes up in the morning he felt his whole body aching
but cannot remember why. Upon from waking up, he read on the morning news paper that Spider–Man has taken down the villain last night. Even
though he was the one fighting the villain he has no memory of the fight. The episode end when one of Peter's co–workers knocks at his door and let
him knows that his Grandma May is in the hospital because of a heart attack.
From watching the episode of Spectacular Spider–Man I noticed that there was a lot of violent and negative messages/treatment.

Lacrosse And The Lacrosse Community

Political and Economic Issues Along the U.S. and Mexico...
Introduction and Statement of Purpose According to Jason Riley (2009) there are an estimated ten to twelve million illegal immigrants living within
the United States (p. 54). According to Cieslik, Felsen, and Kalaitzidis (2009), over half of these illegal immigrants are from Mexico (p. 185). These
population estimates have led the United States to take action along our border. We have built a fence, deployed various surveillance systems, and
currently employ thousands of U.S. Border Protection officers. These actions have made the issue of illegal immigration a highly debated topic within

117). According to an experienced border patrol agent named T.J. Bonner, "Intrusions by the Mexican military to protect drug loads happen all the

securing the U.S.–Mexico border. Not all of Mr. Buchanan's views are based on histories of violence from Mexican illegal aliens. As recent as the
September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, U.S. citizens have realized we are vulnerable to attacks within the United States. This realization is a valid
concern because terrorists could also gain access through this border. The U.S. Border Patrol has a term called other–than–Mexican (OTM). Buchanan
(2006) stated, "A growing number of OTMs caught at the border now come from the Middle East" (p. 15). It is important to remember that these
Middle Easterners are caught at other points of entry, and not just the U.S.–Mexico border. This does show a significant paranoia that many Americans
have. This paranoia can lead to Americans supporting increased border protection. Governor's Richardson, Napolitano, and Mr. Buchanan all share a
similar point of view regarding more security on our border. Not all Americans share this opinion. Jason Reilly is an editor at the Washington Post. He

Tillman Hall. This is the name of the main building on Winthrop University's campus and is the name of the clock tower at Clemson University.
These two buildings have faced quite a number of racial incidences over the past couple of years due to the founder of the two buildings, Benjamin R.
Tillman. Many people have raised the issue of having the name changed to something different over the past couple of years but no changes have been
made. There hope is to end the racial incidences that occur and ultimately stop racism on these two campuses. The major question at hand is will
changing the name of Tillman Hall reduce the number of race–induced incidents? I do think that changing the name of Tillman Hall on both of these
two campuses will reduce racial incidences due to the fact that this changes the atmosphere of the school and really holds itself up to its diversity
standard, the changing of the name does not change history but it shows that we as a people have come far and don't need someone like Benjamin

The Novel ' The Expedition Of Humphry Clinker ' By Tobias...
The epistolary novel, a novel that is written entirely in the form of letters, first gained traction in the early 18th century. Two epistolary novels that
encapsulated this style very well were Dangerous Liaisons and Evelina. The similarities are also not solely in terms of writing style. Both of these
authors use the letters that their characters write as a method of deception to obtain what they truly desire, even if it does not appear as such. Despite
the divide that separates them in genre, both Burney and Laclos exhibited this style very well as the authors used these letters to convey their
characters goals, intentions, and desires to the reader in their works.
We will first examine the novel by Pierre Ambrose Laclos, Dangerous Liaisons. There are a few reasons why Laclos' letters provided a sense of
importance stylistically. Dangerous Liaisons was not a typical work, as it was the first French epistolary novel to use more than one perspective
(Brittanica). As we know The Expedition of Humphry Clinker by Tobias Smollett was published in 1771, had multiple perspectives displayed through
letters, but Smollett was a Scot, and his work was set in both England and Scotland. His work was never able to gain much popularity in France.

`` The First Full Length Novel `` By Henry Fielding
Joseph Andrews, the first full length novel which was made by the English author Henry Fielding. And considered from the first English novels, this
novel was called by Henry Fielding 's comic epic poem in prose. This novel is a parody version of the novel "Pamela". it is the story of a good–natured
footman 's adventures on the road home from London with his friend and mentor, the stargazing parson Abraham Adams. Thenovel speaks to the
meeting up of the two contending feel of eighteenth–century writing: the false chivalrous and neoclassical (and, by augmentation, privileged)
methodology of Augustans, for example, Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift; and the famous, household exposition fiction of authors, for example,
Daniel Defoe and Samuel Richardson. At this paper I will discuss points of view themes, characters, language, and significance
for ten or eleven years, Joseph Andrews was in the administration of Sir Thomas Booby, the uncle of Squire Booby, who was hitched to the prudent
Pamela, Joseph 's sister. At the point when Lord Booby passes on, Joseph from the beginning stays in the utilize of Lady Booby as her footman. This
woman, much more seasoned than her twenty–one–year–old servant and evidently minimal irritated by her spouse 's demise, is pulled in to the
charming mannered, attractive young person. Joseph, be that as it may, is as prudent as his renowned sister, and when Lady Booby 's advances ended

Essay Joseph Andrews
Joseph Andrews In Fielding's Joseph Andrews you see a variety of characters. They range from the shallow, vain and proud characters like Lady
Booby and Mrs. Slipslop to the innocent, sincere, and virtuous like Joseph and Fanny. The presence of Lady Booby, and all of the people like her that
are portrayed in the same selfish and dishonest way, bring out the importance of the clergy. Most of the clergy that we meet in the story don't fit our
vision of "holy people". They didn't fit Fielding's vision either. Parson Adams is the only character that represents what Fielding considers to be the
proper role for the clergy. He believes that the proper role for the clergy is that they should give moral guidance and they should be virtuous and...

Even though it is his job to set a good example and forgive other people for their sins, he is just a drunk who is also in need of being saved and
forgiven. Adams shows up at the inn, greatly concerned for Joseph's health and safety, and such uncharitable people surround him that one cannot
help but notice his sincere and caring nature. Adams gives Joseph the little money that he has, even though it is not enough. He is not aware of the
economics of everyday life, but it his gesture to give his friend all of his money that makes him such a great person. He believes that an honest mind
would rather lose money by conveying good instructions to mankind than gain by propagating evil. It is easy to compare the good and the bad
clergymen in these couple chapters because they are almost standing side by side. It is very clear that Fielding chooses Adams to take on the proper
role as a parson.
Adams and Joseph travel on but stop at another inn for the night. It is in this chapter that we see the first of many fistfights. The hostess cares for
Joseph but her husband scolds her for wasting time. She is very much like Betty back at the other inn. Neither one of them are perfect but they have a
sense of charm that puts them on a higher pedestal than the rich snobby people that reappear later in the story. But the host of the inn begins to fight
after a remark by Adams about the host's very little humanity. The fight is settled and a

Throughout the 20th century there were many influential pieces of literature that would not only tell a story or teach a lesson, but also let the reader
into the author's world. Allowing the reader to view both the positives and negatives in an author. Ernest Hemingway was one of these influential
authors. Suffering through most of his life due to a disturbingly scarring childhood, he expresses his intense mental and emotional insecurities through
subtle metaphors that bluntly show problems with commitment to women and proving his masculinity to others. Ernest Hemingway was born on July

moment that really struck with him, due to it being masculine, was when a soldier was injured by a machine gun, and he managed to carry the soldier
to safety and save his life. Little did many know, he also found and married his first love during the war,Hadley Richardson. This was the first time that
he actually began to not fear and actually trust a woman. This eventually branches off to more problems with women and even commitment, for he is
married 3 more times after Hadley. "Deep in Ernest... was a mistrust and fear of women. Which he suffered from always" (Brainy Quote 1). Never

Right when the war ended, he began writing short stories and novels. Starting with his first novel, The Sun Also Rises, in 1926. Several things had

had dealing with his manipulative mother and scarring childhood constantly spilled into his writing. Unfortunately, Hemingway felt like no one should

His age though caused a slight problem. He was almost nine years of age and all the first graders were almost seven. The master of the school,
John Lovell, found a nice solution. Since John was excellently trained in Lexington, Lowell moved him up to third grade. John was neither
Lowell’s favorite nor his worst student. By his fifth year, he was ready to begin “making Latin”. He translated from
Caesar’s Commentaries, Cicero’s Orations , and the Aeneid. The major purpose of the school was to prepare a student in the
liberal arts so he can follow the same path at college. The foundation of the school was classical languages, but with his mastery of the ancients, he
also acquired knowledge of history, philosophy , and theology. By the time spring came around in 1750, John was finishing his time at Latin. He
had completed the school’s curriculum and was preparing for college. Of course the choice was Harvard. He was armed with a conspicuous
heredity, money, and recommendations from Master Lowell. John didn’t have any trouble getting into Harvard. In the fall of 1750, John,
Latin alumnus entered Harvard College. At the age of thirteen and a half, he was the second youngest boy in his class, and he was ranked fifth out of
the twenty in his class. College work for Hancock was practically a continuation of his work at Latin. The emphasis in college was still languages

Theatre Of Absurd Essay
After the Second World War, the people have suffered from corruption, frustration, and injustices that lead them to prefer to isolate life alone. They
have felt that life has lost its meaning and it becomes useless. All that force them to be more aggressive and angry. All the political, economic and
social conditions at that time have forced people to feel lost. This feeling of loss makes group of playwrights to create the Theater of Absurd.
The Theater of Absurd reflects the feeling of loneliness and isolation of people. The playwrights aim to use meaningless plot, repetition, foolish
dialogues, and absurd language to present the suffering of people. All of their characteristics and techniques are new, as they revolt against all

To be accurate, drama of anger has not begun in certain time or place. Any kind of violence, cruelty, frustration or injustice can lead to produce anger.
This paper will give more attention to anger in twentieth century, especially in the period that follows the Second World War which is called "The
Absurd". It is actually has begun in 1960.
The term "The Theater of Absurd" is coined by Martin Esslin (1918–2002), critic, to describe the theater that is created by some European and
American playwrights who has appeared in the of late1950s and the early of 1960s such as Samuel Beckett (1906–89), Arthur Adamove (1908 – 1970),
Harold Pinter (1930 – 2008), and Edward Albee (1928 – ).
Through this term, Esslin tries to show the sense of loss and uselessness of existence in the world which the post–war dramatists have felt. This
movement known as "The Theater of Absurd" is not an organized movement and has not any clear–cut agenda Each of the main playwrights has
developed his/her style independently. Moreover, Esslin states that "absurd" originally means "out of harmony" (18 –

Lord Of The Flies Literary Analysis
Whenever there is a time when it is just kids in a room and no adults, it gets hectic very fast and most of the time turns into utter chaos. What do
you do in a time of chaos? Some people become leaders and others become followers. In the book the Lord of the Flies the kids are faced with
struggling to survive, and what roles they will be playing as they are on the island. The kids desire for popularity and power gets a little out of hand
and the kids feel peer pressure to submit to these power crazed children in order to fit in. Kids struggle with peer pressure and the desire for
popularity already, but when put in an environment when there are no adults the desire for popularity and the act of giving into peer pressure gets out
of hand. A part of this struggle comes from the younger boys who are not confident in their identities that they want to be followers rather than leaders.
Throughout the Lord of the Flies the idea of peer pressure and wanting to achieve popularity become more prevalent as the story goes on.
It all begins in the beginning with Ralph and Piggy, and we see that Ralph makes fun of Piggy to boost his confidence, making himself feel better
about himself. At first Ralph and Piggy were somewhat friends because they were the only two that had met up, but after meeting the rest of the kids
on the island Ralph completely ditches Piggy and starts hanging around Jack, who is a more popular kid. This is the first example we see Ralph
starting to strive for

How Does Jane Austen Present Relationships In Persuasion
Persuasion is the last novel written by Jane Austen, published in 1817. Like every other piece of work she has created, Persuasion is a romance. While
there are many characters in this novel, the main love affair is between Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth. These two were once in love, but
persuasion by a person dear to Anne, lead her to end her courtship with Captain Wentworth. Once that fling came to a halt, he tried to move on and
courted himself with Louise Musgrove. Austen's novels would be nothing without the courtships that she creates between her characters. Courtships
are what essentially make an Austen novel so spectacular. Anne Elliot is one of three daughter to Sir Walter, and the late Lady Elliot. Although his wife

While Anne has come to terms with what happened, she does not regret so much listening to Lady Russell. Anne explains to Captain Wentworth,
"I have been thinking over the past, and trying to impartially to judge of the right and wrong, I mean with regard to myself; and I must believe that
I was right, much as I suffered from it, that I was perfectly right in being guided by the friend whom you will love better than you do now. To me,
she was in the place of a parent. Do not mistake me, however. I am not saying that she did not err in her advice. It was perhaps one of those cases
in which advice is good or bad only as the event decides; and for myself, I certainly never should, in any circumstance of tolerable similarity, give
such advice" (253). She brings up this idea that Lady Russell was playing the role of a parent when she was giving Anne the advice to not go forward
with her engagement with Captain Wentworth. A parent of a high status would want nothing less than that for their child. Especially for a daughter.
Although Anne was able to look beyond the superficial aspects to Captain Wentworth, the two people whose word means the most, could

A.W.N. Pugin was England's leading Gothic revivalist. The revivals of the ancient architecture influenced the architectural designs of many architects

Its style combined classical ideas from the ancient Greek, Roman, and Romanesque architecture and deployed their ideas into its architecture (Carven,

depression. Beaux Arts style emphasized the classical forms and features by showing elaborate details while having heavy masonry, and massive plans.
The Beaux Arts displayed elaborate details by integrating sculpture that was influenced by the Baroque and Rococo styles. It also had classical details
such as pilasters, balustrades, and garlands. It was highly ornamented to the point that an elaborately decorated surface with little areas left
unornamented became the hallmark for the Beaux Arts style (Architectural style of America, n.d.). Also, the Beaux Arts style is symmetrical because it

Relatable Characters In Pride And Prejudice Essay
Arianne E. Maghirang 11– Dempsey Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice had drawn a clear picture of Georgian England. It is a story of love and

delightful story about Anne Elliot finding love with Captain Frederick Wentworth again. Accompanying her throughout this story is her arrogant father,
dear friend Lady Russell, and her sisters. As we continue to read we see Jane Austen indirectly discourages the double standard women experience
during this time period. I regard this novel is classical literature, due to the fact that women still face double standard of men today. We see the everyday

Today this difficulty still exists. Women make up half of the workforce. Studies show that women often go to college longer and graduate with higher
degrees than men do. But yet, today women still make less than men. "In 2015, female full–time workers made only 80 cents for every dollar earned by
men, a gender wage gap of 20 percent" (Pay Equality and Discrimination www.iwpr.org). Women can do the same jobs as men and still make less.
This is consistent in almost every occupation. Double standards against women are still as much of a problem today as it was then. Women today can
still relate to the double standards women faced in the 18th century. This would make Persuasion classical literature, literature that has enduring
qualities that can still be applied to present times. Women then were thought of as inferior to men, and incapable of the things men were capable of.
This still relates to today, women still get paid less and are still thought to be inferior to men. Both then and now women have proven to be just as
good as men, so why has nothing changed? Jane Austen tells the story in Anne Elliot's perspective of things to show the double standard women had to

wishes to lead a life filled with instant and spontaneous gratitude, that being traveling across the world or drinking, while the woman wishes to things

Hemingway's worldview. The man, therefore, represents humanity in the modern age as he does not live honestly and seeks only what rewards him
instantly rather than something that benefits him greater in the long term. Rather than focus and work towards something truly beneficial, humanity
fights to be unrestrained and minimally responsible for their actions, choosing to devote themselves to simple pleasures and vices rather than honest
and bountiful rewards. The couple is described to be in a bar located in a rather barren, lifeless area

Rewarded (1740), Clarissa: Or the History of a Young Lady (1748) and The History of Sir Charles Grandison (1753). Richardson's career was
unusual for literature. He started to write when he was fifty years old but his creativity was still young. The History of Mrs. Beaumont is Richardson's
last novel but it is unfinished. It is the story of a lady‚ whom „his soul loved" and it proves that Richardson's creativity was still working until
the day he died. He liked to think about his self as being a hero of an unhappy love story. By using the epistolary form in his novels, Richardson

Driven by clear moralistic intentions, he wrote the epistolary novel Pamela as a realistic sentimental parable based on an exemplary adventure. The
initial area of conflict is defined morally, in foreground being the rich seducer whose mother dies, Mr. B. and his maid, Pamela Andrews. Richardson
made in this way a sentimental tearful prose. The evolution of the plot is reproduced firstly by long letters of Pamela to her parents and by their
responses. Dialog items, indeed reduced, are also introduced in these fictitious letters. The style is constantly punctuated by moralizing judgments and
appeals to virtue, strongly standing out the echo of Puritan moral propagated by Richardson. Basic terms of conflict result from the aggressive
behavior of the master tempted to seduce the maid and her worthy resistance, although she was in love with him. Sentimental parable has a happy
ending. Converted to virtue by the young girl, Mr. B. who repents for his intentions, he proposed her a marriage. The victory of a simple and pure
person just emphasizes once again the cautionary lesson from this work. The story is complex: the main heroine is Pamela Andrews, a beautiful
15–years–old who was working as a maidservant in Bedfordshire. She was an innocent, pious and virtuous girl. After the death of Lady B, she
remained due to her wish as a servant in the house. Mr. B, the new country landowner master after his mother death, started to make advances
towards the young servant. He tried to seduce against her will and wanted to pay her to keep the secret about his mistake, but Pamela refused and
told the stories of his attempts to the housekeeper, Mrs. Jervis. One night he was hidden in her room and tried to kiss and after this event the poor
girl decided to go back to her impoverished parents to preserve her virtue. He proposed her to marry the chaplain from Lincolnshire, Mr. Williams, but

Women in "Hills like White Elephants" and "The Yellow...
Through history women have fought for equal rights and freedom. This tension is derived from men; society, in general; and within a woman herself.
In the nineteenth century, women in literature were often portrayed as submissive to men. Literature of this period often characterized women as
oppressed by society, as well as by the male influences in their lives. This era is especially interesting because it is a time in modern society when
women were still treated as second–class citizens. Two interesting short stories, "Hills like White Elephants" and "The Yellow Wallpaper" focus on a
woman's plight near the turn of the nineteenth century. Both authors, Hemmingway and Gilman, leave an open end to the stories and allow readers to

Everyday she keeps looking at the torn yellow wallpaper. While there, she is forbidden to write in her journal, as it indulges her imagination, which is
not in accordance with her husband's wishes. Despite this, the narrator makes entries in the journal whenever she has the opportunity. Through these
entries we learn of her obsession with the wallpaper in her bedroom. She is enthralled with it and studies the paper for hours. She thinks she sees a

his wife has pulled the paper off the wall and is crawling around the perimeter of the room.

of your arrogance, your conceit, and your selfish disdain of the feelings of others, were such as to form that ground–work of disapprobation, on which
succeeding events have built so immovable a dislike; and I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I
could ever be prevailed on to marry" (Ch. 34). In the article about Jane's life, the author states, "Feminine action is contracted by numberless
difficulties, that there are no impediments of masculine exertion"(pg.2), in other words stating that a woman almost never has a right to disapprove
someone in the way Austen wrote of Elizabeth to Darcy in his proposal. This proves that Austen was mocking the normality, and trying to focus the
reader on feminism (advocacy of women's rights), and the resistance against conformity ("marxism"). Jane Austen also portrays feminism through the
character Lydia Bennet, another daughter/sister in the Bennet family who needs to marry in order to find money and a place to live. During this era,
class was a big affair, in which it was highly scorned upon. In Sulloway's

Analysis Of In Bruges And The Crying Game
In Martin McDonagh's In Bruges and Neil Jordan's The Crying Game, the concept of guilt and flight are explored. The purpose of this essay is to
explore these concepts and the life choices each of the main characters make that ultimately lead to moral dilemmas. This essay will also explore
supplementary themes such as conflict, redemption and forgiveness.
In Bruges follows two Irish hitmen, Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken Daley (Brendan Gleeson). After a completely botched job they performed in London,
they are ordered by their boss, Harry Waters (Ralph Fiennes) to hide out in Bruges and wait for further instructions. Although Ken is fascinated by the
city's architecture and history, Ray has nothing but disdain for it and wishes to return to London. Could this be his punishment for a job gone awry? MC
Throughout the film In Bruges, we follow Ray and his emotional journey of guilt and conflict. He chooses the career of a professional hitman and as a
result, there should be no emotional attachments associated in that decision. It's simply business. Or is it? His profession eventually leads him to an
unforeseen and unfortunate incident. But is it realistic for Ray to feel remorse? After all, it was his choice to become a hitman to begin with.
While in London, Ray was ordered to kill a priest. For Ray, this never seemed to be an issue and he never really questions the reason why. He
assumes if he was ordered to kill a priest, he must have done something depraved. As a result of carrying out his orders, he accidentally kills a young
boy. MC It is evident that Ray is overwhelmed by his actions and all of this plays out in the film when he flees to Bruges.
As the story progresses, we discover that Ray is more than just a cold hearted hitman. He is a man who is suffering. This is displayed throughout the
film as he exhibits some strange and at times, irrational behavior. He doesn't attempt to justify his actions, instead he plunges into a state of
depression and conflict. "He's dead because of me. And I'm trying to... been trying to get me head around it, but I can't. I will have always have killed
that little boy. That ain't ever going away. Ever. Unless... maybe I go away." MC
Ray is left with a choice. He can continue to

The Epistolary Literary Form Of Pamela By Samuel Richardson

  • 1. The Epistolary Literary Form Of Pamela By Samuel Richardson Pamela by Samuel Richardson is a famous 18th century novel which arguably popularizes the epistolary literary form. Presenting Pamela Andrews as a young maidservant, she undergoes a series of trials in which she defends her virtue from Mr. B. to later reforming him and getting married. While it does present the narrative of the reformation of a potential rake, the romance between two characters of different social classes and the eventual social climbing to achieve a happy ending, the real interest is in the literary form. The main character writes in letters and, later, in journal entries, recounting the experiences she's undergone to her parents (and to the reader). The person who reads Pamela is enthralled into a narrative due to the feeling of secrecy. Pamela expects her letters and journals to be read by her parents and she believes God can read her thoughts, or, at the very least, the words she puts down. Despite having an intended readership, it is a small and private group of people. Moreover, it is through these two mediums, Pamela can confidently write her thoughts because she believes she knows who her readers are. Due to this confidentiality, it is easy for the reader to feel connected and attached to the main character. For example, in letter 25, she states "for to who but you can I vent my Griefs" (Richardson 60). The 'you' invokes the feeling of intimacy. She can only rely on 'you' to discuss her inner thoughts, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Lord Of The Flies By William Shakespeare Ralph rolled out onto the beach where the water meets the sand. All he could do was pray to God that something would save him – a ship, a plane, a helicopter, anything. He looked up and saw nothing but the blue sky. The savages rushed toward Ralph. He did not run or try to fight. He knew his fate and could only embrace it. He lay on the sand and waited. Jack stood over Ralph with a satisfied grin on his face. He turned and faced his Hunters. "Everyone! This is what we 've waited for all day. We will all get a chance to pick at him. But the officials go first! Me, then Roger, then everyone can sort out the order for themselves!" He turned back to Ralph. "Any last words?" Ralph looked up to Jack and motioned for him to come closer. Jack leaned down only to have Ralph spit in his face. Almost immediately after, Jack thrust his spear into Ralph 's neck. His blood flowed freely and rapidly. And finally, once he lay in a pool of his own blood, he was no more. Jack and his tribe screamed at the top of their lungs and rejoiced. They were now the only tribe on the island. Roger walked up to the fresh kill and stuck his spear into Ralph 's forehead. He moved out of the way and the rest of the tribe rushed toward the dead body. Jack walked away and thought. He had just burned down the entire island, what is he to do? There were no more pigs or fruit. What would they eat? How would they bathe? Drink? He cast his worries aside. He 'd cross that bridge when he came to it. He turned ... "Ho, ho, ho, ho, what do we have here!" he said with a smile. He watched a girl crying. He was confused. He was thinking to himself, "Did someone tell her that I did not exist? Did her parents get mad at her?" then one of Santa's elves, Sprinkles, came inside his office, "Sprinkles can you please run a report on this child?" "I am on my way, sir!" said sprinkles. A few minutes passed and Mr. Claus was talking toMrs. Claus about the girl. "Mr. Claus I got the report!" said Sprinkles. "Her name is Rarity, she is 9 years old, she has a cat named Oliver, and she has no parents, so she is a foster chi–" Probably that is why she is crying," said Mr. Claus "She is a foster child. I think I remember her from three years. She was so joyful and she is on the nice list. The house where she used to live was every joyful it was beautiful with all the lights." Santa said, while looking at his nice list from last year. "And now she is sad and crying for whatever reason. I can not believe what so much can happen in three years," said Santa. Sprinkles just wanted to cry but then she would be embarrassed, but who cared. Then she started crying. Mr. Claus was worried for Rarity. He wanted to know more about this special child. • 4. The Watergate Scandal Watergate, the greatest scandal of the 20th century, remains a shrouded mystery. Early on the morning of June 17, 1972, there was a break –in and several burglars were arrested inside the office of the Democratic National Committee's headquarters in the Watergate Office complex building located in Washington, D.C. Thus began a series of events that would shake the public's confidence in its most visible symbol of American authority and prestige: the presidency of Richard Nixon. A seemingly random robbery at a Washington, D.C. building leads to the first presidential resignation in American history. We will discuss the following events surrounding the Watergate break –in: when did the break–in occur, how was Nixon connected to the break–in. We will also discuss the events surrounding the discovery of the tapes, the issues involved in trying to get the tapes from President Nixon and what is the "18 1/2 minutes of silence". Finally, throughout this paper we will also include Archibald Cox the first Watergate special prosecutor. This was no ordinary robbery that happened on the morning of June 17, 1972. The burglars were connected to President Richard Nixon's reelection campaign, and the prowlers had been caught while attempting to wiretap phones and steal secret documents. The historians of this decade are not sure whether or not President Richard Nixon knew about the Watergate espionage operation before it happened. However, History.com states, President Nixon, okayed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. A Moveable Feast By Ernest Hemingway While reading A Moveable Feast, I felt immersed into Ernest Hemingway's world and developed a better understanding of him with a human experience. This novel provides an inside look on both, Hemingway's time in Paris in the 1920s and the time at the end of his life leading up to his premature death. If one is familiar with his life, and especially his later years, A Moveable Feast gives insight into his life at the time of writing his memoir. The text itself is about Paris, but the reflection comes from an older Hemingway who was sentimental, longing and nostalgic. Regardless of the comments from family, friends and academics, interpreting the text itself in A Moveable Feast is the best way to learn about Hemingway and his mindset during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Unlike many great books, there are two versions of A Moveable Feast which were released by individuals separated by two generations. First, there is the 1964 version which offers the completed and unified memoir on Hemingway's early years in Paris. It is important to understand that Hemingway never completed the memoir and his fourth wife, Mary Hemingway, performed much of the editing and final touches. In contrast, the 2009 version is believed by most to be more accurate to Hemingway's original manuscripts, but it does not offer a unified story. Even though these versions are very different from one another they both offer valuable insight on Hemingway as a person. Since A Moveable Feast was left unfinished, ... • 6. The Romantic Period : An Explosion Of Artistic Energy From... The Romantic Period was an explosion of artistic energy from 1790–1820, which began in Germany and quickly spread to the United States, almost all of Europe, and Latin America. Those in this time idealized nature and embraced the uncivilized, and imagination was a key component to their writing. Steven Kreis, author for The History Guide writes, "...one power possessed by the Romantic...was imagination..." (Kreis 1). The idea was the rejection of the Enlightenment and the acceptance of individuality and self–expression. One big player in the Romantic Era, and considered to be one of the founders of the movement, was Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He was born in 1772 to a clergyman in England and is the tenth and youngest child. Coleridge attended Cambridge from 1791 to 1794 but never graduated. He met William Wordsworth, another founder of the Romantic Movement, in 1797 and produced his best work with him. Coleridge was also one of the first to incorporate conversational poetry into his work due to Wordsworth. He later went to Germany with Wordsworth and Wordsworth's sister Dorothy, but the siblings were miserable and it eventually led them back to the Lake District. Upon their return, Coleridge got sick and became addicted to opium in order to relieve his pain. The opium completely changed him and brought about what was known as his "wandering phase". In 1813, he faced his addiction and went to a doctor, but couldn't overcome it and died in 1834. He was a very dreamy person, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Clarissa's Way of Death Essay examples Clarissa's Way of Death In Clarissa, Samuel Richardson finds "an exemplar to her sex." But her story does not provide a model to live by, as such a qualification may lead one to expect. Only in the afterlife does Clarissa presumably receive what she deserves. The life suggested by her example is untenable. Clarissa's death is the inevitable result of her unrealistic, unimpeachable virtue В a virtue that is defined less by what she does than by what she will permit. Her death serves not only a narrative end in the novel, but the demands of psychological realism. Richardson respects the conclusion made inevitable by the very "divinity" of Clarissa's personality. This heroine can have no other conclusion. Her death–drive is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "I have sometimes wished that it had pleased God to have taken me in my last fever, when I had everybody's love and good opinion" followed by "but oftener that I had never been distinguished by my grandfatherЕ since that distinction has estranged" her from her brother and sister (2). We see her wishing for a state in which she is universally loved, a state she once existed in, and that she would eagerly regain. Alongside this, she decries that very exceptionalness that earns her acclaim. She finds that she cannot be "an exemplar" and also be universally loved. This is the essential paradox of her personality. It becomes necessary for these death–wishes to be in earnest, as only death could preserve the unblemished state she once existed in. What sets Clarissa apart is what damns her. "Your merit is your crime" AnnaHowe tells her (74), "You can no more change your nature than they can theirs." But this intractability is Clarissa's inheritance from the Harlowes. Anna Howe says, significantly, of Clarissa: "I am fitter for this world than you; you for the next than me" (19). Not only is this an apposite description, it sets up the incontrovertible opposition between the two "worlds" that determines the impracticability of Clarissa's life. Howe might as well be saying, you are fitter to be dead than I. Anna's observation describes the difficulty of persisting in a state of grace. Innocence, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Jack And Ralph Relationship In Lord Of The Flies Jack and Ralph's Relationship The Lord of the Flies is a novel about two dozen boys who are stranded on a deserted island during World War II. In The Lord of the Flies, Ralph and Jack's relationship directly affects tribal decisions and development. Jack and Ralph's differences in opinion, development of savagery, competitive mind set and fight for power cause difficulty within the tribe. Jack and Ralph's negative relationship develops there differences in opinion. Jack doesn't take it serious that his pig hunters are not contributing to building the forts. "Wewant meat." "Well, we haven't got any yet. And we need shelters." (Golding 51). Jack does not understand the importance of having the shelters built as much as Ralph does. Likewise, Jack neglects the fire in order to go on a pig hunt. This causes a ship to not notice and to bypass the island. "There was a ship. Out there you said you'd keep the fire going and you let it out!" (Golding 70). Jack doesn't see the importance in the rescue fire and neglects the job he was given by Ralph. Ralph makes the rule that the only fire allowed, is the one on top of the mountain. (Golding 81). This insures that the hunters keep the fire going because they will need it to cook pigs. Ralph does not see the importance of catching pigs as Jack does and only sees the importance of their rescue. In conclusion, Jack and Ralph neglect one another's priorities, leading the development of a negative relationship. As the boys spend more time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dear Society: Unmasking the Narrative and Ideological Elements of Joseph Andrews After its publication in 1740, Samuel Richardson's Pamela became wildly commercially successful and has been described as one of the earliest multi–media events, spawning translations, stage adaptations, merchandise, and literary responses (Turner 71). These literary responses largely imitated Richardson's style, yet challenged the irreproachable virtue of his protagonist. They served to provide an alternate perspective to Pamela's tale, typically portraying her as a scheming social climber. Regardless of the ideological differences, both types of literary responses adopted Richardson's epistolary style, but Henry Fielding's later response Joseph Andrews employs an omniscient narrator. In contrast to the limited voice of the letter writer, the omniscient point of view allows the reader to hear many voices. Joseph Andrews' myriad characters expose their true intentions, for with each changing situation, their chosen words benefit themselves. For example, when the beaten and robbed Joseph is brought to Mr. Tow–wouse's inn, Mrs. Tow–wouse does not wish to give the "vagabond" charity; the surgeon declares there is no hope of Joseph's living; and the clergyman Barnabas rationalizes he can't save him. However once Betty reveals the thief stole a gold piece from Joseph, all three characters declare Christian and lawful morals in providing the now "gentleman" with a warm bed and legal representation. Their change reveals that Mrs. Tow–wouse's true desire is to associate with the higher society, and Barnabus and the surgeon only want to portray their self–purported skills in court (Fielding 29–39). The omniscient narrator lets the readers in on the characters' secret: their pretense hides their vanity. This omniscience extends to the narrator himself as he invites the reader to see his own vanity and hypocrisy. When informing the reader about chapter decisions, the narrator claims this is to allow the reader to "repose ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The couple could have had any beverage to drink but the man suggested they drink beer and then he emphasized "big" ones. This was an indication that the couple was dealing with something serious. In paragraph 87 when the girl did not want to talk anymore, she then asked if they could have another beer (Stanford 841). It is human nature to avoid problems, as this couple is doing. Why do people drink? People develop dependencies, to cope with troubles. In relation to Hemingway, he was among the many literary writers who were alcoholics. He even said, "That all good writers are drinking writers" (Benedictus). Looking at the circumstances when Hemingway wrote the story, he was very depressed. • 11. Savagery In Lord Of The Flies Civilizations come in many different forms but even the best of them can descend into savagery. The boys being stranded on an island made civilization very hard to keep, thus making it not very difficult for them to descend into savagery. The first time the boys started to show signs of savagery was when Jack and some other boys split off and made a "tribe." They put on face paint and hunted the pigs religiously not caring for their rescue, as all of them had already assumed they weren't going to get rescued. Killing Simon and Piggy showed the true evilness in humanity when civilization falls. Jack and his tribe went mad after that going on a rampage and to do whatever pleased them. The tribe did not care for the well being of other and only focused on themselves. Lord of the Flies by William Golding clearly displays the evil in humanity through the loss of civilization to the descent into savagery, showing that even the best of people can fade into savagery. When Jack and some of the boys split off into their own group or "tribe" it really showed the evilness in humanity. Ralph and Piggy in "Lord of the flies" were the leaders and helped keep civilization intact. Without them they became savages and brought out the evil within themselves, Golding shows this with the narrator saying, "The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away" (Golding 98) . The tribe was obsessed with hunting pigs and would even chant "Kill the pig! Cut her throat! Spill ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, it does not prove to be as useful in forming an accurate concept of native title rights. 'Bundle of rights' was a metaphor used by many courts during native title land claims such as that of Western Australia v Ward (2002) 213 CLR 1. The metaphor is used in a useful way to assist the Crown in using its power to extinguish native title rights. Although, this does not determine whether this action were done ethically or not. Although the 'bundle of rights' may be considered as a useful tool it can also impoverish native title rights by not having a holistic view when describing the rights. The bundle of rights metaphor is useful only from the view of the Australian legal system as the system wants to be able to accommodate "partial extinguishment" of native title this will make more sense in due course. According to an experienced border patrol agent named T.J. Bonner, "Intrusions by the Mexican military to protect drug loads happen all the time" (as cited in Buchanan, 2006, p.117). It is easy to see how U.S. Border Patrol agents and Mr. Buchanan can support the United States' efforts in securing the U.S.–Mexico border. Not all of Mr. Buchanan's views are based on histories of violence from Mexican illegal aliens. As recent as the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, U.S. citizens have realized we are vulnerable to attacks within the United States. This realization is a valid concern because terrorists could also gain access through this border. The U.S. Border Patrol has a term called other–than–Mexican (OTM). Buchanan (2006) stated, "A growing number of OTMs caught at the border now come from the Middle East" (p. 15). It is important to remember that these Middle Easterners are caught at other points of entry, and not just the U.S.–Mexico border. This does show a significant paranoia that many Americans have. This paranoia can lead to Americans supporting increased border protection. This is the name of the main building on Winthrop University's campus and is the name of the clock tower at Clemson University. These two buildings have faced quite a number of racial incidences over the past couple of years due to the founder of the two buildings, Benjamin R. Tillman. Many people have raised the issue of having the name changed to something different over the past couple of years but no changes have been made. There hope is to end the racial incidences that occur and ultimately stop racism on these two campuses. The major question at hand is will changing the name of Tillman Hall reduce the number of race–induced incidents? I do think that changing the name of Tillman Hall on both of these two campuses will reduce racial incidences due to the fact that this changes the atmosphere of the school and really holds itself up to its diversity standard, the changing of the name does not change history but it shows that we as a people have come far and don't need someone like Benjamin Tillman at the center representing us, and it is very likely that these racial incidents will be put to an end as the "violent racist" and his legacy is gone. Two epistolary novels that encapsulated this style very well were Dangerous Liaisons and Evelina. The similarities are also not solely in terms of writing style. Both of these authors use the letters that their characters write as a method of deception to obtain what they truly desire, even if it does not appear as such. Despite the divide that separates them in genre, both Burney and Laclos exhibited this style very well as the authors used these letters to convey their characters goals, intentions, and desires to the reader in their works. We will first examine the novel by Pierre Ambrose Laclos, Dangerous Liaisons. There are a few reasons why Laclos' letters provided a sense of importance stylistically. Dangerous Liaisons was not a typical work, as it was the first French epistolary novel to use more than one perspective (Brittanica). As we know The Expedition of Humphry Clinker by Tobias Smollett was published in 1771, had multiple perspectives displayed through letters, but Smollett was a Scot, and his work was set in both England and Scotland. His work was never able to gain much popularity in France. French literature in general did not implore this style; they usually followed a more traditionalist model when it came to the novel. He was also the first French author to employ letters that were not designed solely for reporting events. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What do you do in a time of chaos? Some people become leaders and others become followers. In the book the Lord of the Flies the kids are faced with struggling to survive, and what roles they will be playing as they are on the island. The kids desire for popularity and power gets a little out of hand and the kids feel peer pressure to submit to these power crazed children in order to fit in. The Beaux's Art style influenced architecture between 1880 and 1920, but its popularity ended with economic hardships from the great depression. Beaux Arts style emphasized the classical forms and features by showing elaborate details while having heavy masonry, and massive plans. The Beaux Arts displayed elaborate details by integrating sculpture that was influenced by the Baroque and Rococo styles. It also had classical details such as pilasters, balustrades, and garlands. It was highly ornamented to the point that an elaborately decorated surface with little areas left unornamented became the hallmark for the Beaux Arts style (Architectural style of America, n.d.). Also, the Beaux Arts style is symmetrical because it was influenced by the ancient Greek revival. Columns, arches, vaults, and domes were all elements of the Beaux Arts. They used all of these elements and characteristics to try and imitate the European Aristocracy houses. She is proud of what she is, and is not afraid to assert her opinions. The lady's air of importance and immense influence among the other characters, which easily conform to her, gives us a clear picture of the power she has because of her title. She believes she is the sun, and that all the other celestial bodies are revolving around her. Mr. Collins, Elizabeth's distant cousin, is an extreme example of such conformity to her rank. Even though, he is belittled by the lady, but he continues to tribute her. What I have uncovered is that these ranks and titles is the reason why there are injustice structures. • 32. Double Standards Of Women In The 18th Century Persuasion is the last complete novel ever written by Jane Austen, it was originally published in 1818. At the initial sight, we feel that this book is a delightful story about Anne Elliot finding love with Captain Frederick Wentworth again. Accompanying her throughout this story is her arrogant father, dear friend Lady Russell, and her sisters. As we continue to read we see Jane Austen indirectly discourages the double standard women experience during this time period. I regard this novel is classical literature, due to the fact that women still face double standard of men today. We see the everyday complications women had in the 18th century through Anne Elliot, a young, intelligent women of the 18th century. Women of Jane Austen's time... Studies show that women often go to college longer and graduate with higher degrees than men do. But yet, today women still make less than men. "In 2015, female full–time workers made only 80 cents for every dollar earned by men, a gender wage gap of 20 percent" (Pay Equality and Discrimination www.iwpr.org). Women can do the same jobs as men and still make less. This is consistent in almost every occupation. Double standards against women are still as much of a problem today as it was then. Women today can still relate to the double standards women faced in the 18th century. This would make Persuasion classical literature, literature that has enduring qualities that can still be applied to present times. Women then were thought of as inferior to men, and incapable of the things men were capable of. This still relates to today, women still get paid less and are still thought to be inferior to men. Both then and now women have proven to be just as good as men, so why has nothing changed? Ernest Hemingway was one of the most prolific writers of the "Lost Generation," of men who lived through the horrors of World War One. Death played an important role in shaping both his young and adult life and was a seemingly unavoidable to many of the people closest to him. Hemingway's life was drastically altered by the outbreak of WWI, which was one of the greatest influences on the works he would later produce. There, he met his first wife, which marked the beginning of several troubled and unhappy marriages. Much like the previous short story, "Hills Like White Elephants" tackles the concept of finding fulfillment in the meaningless suffering that is life to Hemingway. The man wishes to lead a life filled with instant and spontaneous gratitude, that being traveling across the world or drinking, while the woman wishes to things that are satiating and fulfilling in the long term, like settling down and raising a family. This leads into the existentialism that is so paramount to Hemingway's worldview. The man, therefore, represents humanity in the modern age as he does not live honestly and seeks only what rewards him instantly rather than something that benefits him greater in the long term. Rather than focus and work towards something truly beneficial, humanity fights to be unrestrained and minimally responsible for their actions, choosing to devote themselves to simple pleasures and vices rather than honest and bountiful rewards. Richardson's career was unusual for literature. He started to write when he was fifty years old but his creativity was still young. The History of Mrs. Beaumont is Richardson's last novel but it is unfinished. It is the story of a lady‚ whom „his soul loved" and it proves that Richardson's creativity was still working until the day he died. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Driven by clear moralistic intentions, he wrote the epistolary novel Pamela as a realistic sentimental parable based on an exemplary adventure. The initial area of conflict is defined morally, in foreground being the rich seducer whose mother dies, Mr. B. and his maid, Pamela Andrews. Richardson made in this way a sentimental tearful prose. The evolution of the plot is reproduced firstly by long letters of Pamela to her parents and by their responses. Dialog items, indeed reduced, are also introduced in these fictitious letters. The style is constantly punctuated by moralizing judgments and appeals to virtue, strongly standing out the echo of Puritan moral propagated by Richardson. Basic terms of conflict result from the aggressive behavior of the master tempted to seduce the maid and her worthy resistance, although she was in love with him. Sentimental parable has a happy ending. Converted to virtue by the young girl, Mr. B. who repents for his intentions, he proposed her a marriage. The victory of a simple and pure person just emphasizes once again the cautionary lesson from this work. The story is complex: the main heroine is Pamela Andrews, a beautiful 15–years–old who was working as a maidservant in Bedfordshire. She was an innocent, pious and virtuous girl. After the death of Lady B, she remained due to her wish as a servant in the house. Mr. B, the new country landowner master after his mother death, started to make advances towards the young servant. He tried to seduce against her will and wanted to pay her to keep the secret about his mistake, but Pamela refused and told the stories of his attempts to the housekeeper, Mrs. Jervis. This tension is derived from men; society, in general; and within a woman herself. In the nineteenth century, women in literature were often portrayed as submissive to men. Literature of this period often characterized women as oppressed by society, as well as by the male influences in their lives. This era is especially interesting because it is a time in modern society when women were still treated as second–class citizens. A society where you were told who to marry, and you knew you were doing it for the money. This type of conformity is based on marxism, or the analysis of social and class relations using a materialistic interpretation. Elizabeth Bennet is a main character, a daughter, and a sister in the book whom is trying to find a husband and a future estate. She breaks the societal norm when she abruptly turns down a proposal from a man of much fortune, Mr. Darcy, by saying, "From the very beginning, from the first moment I may almost say, of my acquaintance with you, your manners, impressing me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your conceit, and your selfish disdain of the feelings of others, were such as to form that ground–work of disapprobation, on which succeeding events have built so immovable a dislike; and I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry" (Ch. 34). In the article about Jane's life, the author states, "Feminine action is contracted by numberless difficulties, that there are no impediments of masculine exertion"(pg.2), in other words stating that a woman almost never has a right to disapprove someone in the way Austen wrote of Elizabeth to Darcy in his proposal. This proves that Austen was mocking the normality, and trying to focus the reader on feminism (advocacy of women's rights), and the resistance against conformity ("marxism"). Jane Austen also portrays feminism through the character Lydia Bennet, another daughter/sister in the Bennet family who needs to marry in order to find money and a place to live. • 40. Analysis Of In Bruges And The Crying Game In Martin McDonagh's In Bruges and Neil Jordan's The Crying Game, the concept of guilt and flight are explored. The purpose of this essay is to explore these concepts and the life choices each of the main characters make that ultimately lead to moral dilemmas. This essay will also explore supplementary themes such as conflict, redemption and forgiveness. In Bruges follows two Irish hitmen, Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken Daley (Brendan Gleeson). After a completely botched job they performed in London, they are ordered by their boss, Harry Waters (Ralph Fiennes) to hide out in Bruges and wait for further instructions. Although Ken is fascinated by the city's architecture and history, Ray has nothing but disdain for it and wishes to return to London. Could this be his punishment for a job gone awry? MC Throughout the film In Bruges, we follow Ray and his emotional journey of guilt and conflict. He chooses the career of a professional hitman and as a result, there should be no emotional attachments associated in that decision. It's simply business. Or is it? His profession eventually leads him to an unforeseen and unfortunate incident. But is it realistic for Ray to feel remorse? After all, it was his choice to become a hitman to begin with. While in London, Ray was ordered to kill a priest. For Ray, this never seemed to be an issue and he never really questions the reason why. He assumes if he was ordered to kill a priest, he must have done something depraved. As a result of carrying out his orders, he accidentally kills a young boy. MC It is evident that Ray is overwhelmed by his actions and all of this plays out in the film when he flees to Bruges. As the story progresses, we discover that Ray is more than just a cold hearted hitman. He is a man who is suffering. This is displayed throughout the film as he exhibits some strange and at times, irrational behavior. He doesn't attempt to justify his actions, instead he plunges into a state of depression and conflict. "He's dead because of me.
