Proposal
What type of fine art photography will you produce?
I will be producing landscape photography.
What contexts could this type of imagery be used for?
The photographs I will produced will can be shown in either electronic or print format.
Who would be your ideal target audience?
There will be no specific target market as my photographs will be quite neutral. Although I
have made this point, I believe that women of all ages may show a wider interest in the
images I create. The people viewing the photography will already have an interest in
landscape photography and may like viewing photographs of different places such as York,
Scarborough and Filey.
Who are your influences for this project?
I have been influence by artists such as Edward Weston and Nikolas Koenig as their work
interested me as I was doing the research stages of the project.
Both artists have created beautiful examples of landscape photography and I am wanting to
produce images at a similar standard.
What will your subjects be for this project?
York – when we go into York city centre to take photographs, I will be focusing on places like
the Rive Ouse and the minster from a far to show the landscape.
Scarborough – the majority of the photographs I take will be from Scarborough as I enjoy the
scenery around the seafront.
My main idea was to take photographs of the seafront at Scarborough at night to show all the
lights of the arcades.
Filey – I will be taking photographs from the cliffs of Filey showing a diverse range of subjects
from city to seaside.
What camera techniques will you use?
Daytime photography – for the images I will be taking during the day (York and Filey) I will be
taking advantage of the natural daylight and therefore wont need a flash. I will be using a fast
shutter speed as the subject will be still and may include moving objects such as people and
animals. As the subject is outdoors the ISO will be lower to make the colours even and the
image look sharp.
Night time photography – images taken at night will need a higher shutter speed and aperture
to allow more light into the camera lens. The ISO will be need to be rather high however this
could result in the image looking distorted or grainy. I feel like the auto setting white balance
will be fine for both day and night photography however the dark photographs may need a
cloudy white balance setting to warm the image up slightly.
Will any post-production occur?
Post production will most likely occur with my photographs to insure they look the best they
possibly could.
Day time photographs – for the day time images I may need to adjust the hue and saturation
to make the colours look more natural. If there are any minor imperfections within the image
such as small bits of litter, I will use either the spot healing tool or the clone stamp tool to get
rid it.
Night time photographs – I will probably use the dodge tool to brighten the lights within the
image. I may use the spot healing or clone stamp tool with these set of images as well to
correct small parts of the image.
Will you use feedback to aid your project?
It will be useful to use peer feedback to improve the work I have produced as you often cant
see all of the flaws within your own work and therefore it would be useful to have somebody
else point out what you could improve on if you were to do the work again.
A disadvantage could be, the person viewing your work may not like the whole concept of
your photography and therefore wont be able to give constructive criticism. On the contrary,
the person reviewing your work may not say any improvement as they may not want to be
rude or offend the person who has created the imagery.
Health and Safety
What legislation could affect your project?
(Discuss how the following acts could protect you;
• Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (Manual labour, carrying camera, tripod, lights etc…)
• The health and safety at work act could protect me during the photography stages as the
standards set by this act ensure the health and safety to the people who could be
protected by any work activity.
• Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 (Will you be using substances like glue?)
• I will not be using any potential dangerous substances during the photography task and
therefore, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 Act will not be useful.
• Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
• This will ensure all of the equipment I will be using is safe and therefore this act could
protect me if I use any faulty equipment.
• Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 (Using Photoshop?)
• As I will be using Photoshop for my post production stages of the photography, the DSE
regulations will be protecting me from things such as eye strain and backache from
improper use.
Risk Assessment
What locations will you be using for your project?
York – York Minster, River Ouse
Scarborough – seafront, Scarborough castle
Filey – seafront, Filey cliffs
Hazards Person or equipment at risk Control measure taken
Vehicles or Transport on the
road
DSLR
Myself
Ensure to use common sense
when crossing roads, stay
alert
Pedestrians bumping into
you.
DSLR
Myself
Be alert when in a crowded
place. When stopping to take
a photography, make sure
you are not directly in the
way of anybody
Falling off the cliff at Filey. DSLR
Myself
Do not go towards the edge
of the cliff, be extra careful in
windy weather.
Dropping the camera in the
water at the seaside.
DSLR Use the wrist strap and don’t
go too close to the water.
Camera may get wet due to
bad weather conditions.
DSLR If the weather is bad, I will
stop shooting or use an
appropriate rain cover.
Shooting Schedule
Which dates do you plan to shoot?
Wednesday 11th December – (York)
Saturday 20th December – (Filey during the day, Scarborough when it gets dark)
What equipment will be required?
DLSR – I will need a good quality camera in order to produce good photographs that meet a
high standard.
Tripod – as I will be photographing landscapes, I will need to camera to be still in order to
capture the scene.
Will you require a model?
I will not be using a model within my photography.
Will any props be required?
Props will not be required within my photography as the focus will be on the landscape as a
whole.
Contingency Plan
What Could Happen? Contingency Plan
The forecast is for rain, therefore the
conditions are unsuitable for the shoot
I will ensure I book a camera so I can produce
images on an alternative day
Memory card is full or lost Ensure I have a backup card so I can continue
shooting
The battery may run out on DLSR Before leaving, I will ensure the battery is
fully charged and possibly take a spare.
There is an event happening in York town or
at Scarborough making it hard to get a good
photograph.
Check before leaving that I will be able to get
to the location at ease.
The weather forecast is windy and therefore
the cliffs are inaccessible.
I will check the forecast prier to leaving.
Run out of time when you are shooting. I will ensure that I have plenty of time before
going out. If I run out of time, I will need to
plan another date to take photographs on.
There are not enough cameras for everybody. I am planning to use my own DSLR however, if
this is not a possibility I will need to check
there is enough cameras before hand.

  • 2. Proposal What type of fine art photography will you produce? I will be producing landscape photography. What contexts could this type of imagery be used for? The photographs I will produced will can be shown in either electronic or print format. Who would be your ideal target audience? There will be no specific target market as my photographs will be quite neutral. Although I have made this point, I believe that women of all ages may show a wider interest in the images I create. The people viewing the photography will already have an interest in landscape photography and may like viewing photographs of different places such as York, Scarborough and Filey. Who are your influences for this project? I have been influence by artists such as Edward Weston and Nikolas Koenig as their work interested me as I was doing the research stages of the project. Both artists have created beautiful examples of landscape photography and I am wanting to produce images at a similar standard.
  • 3. What will your subjects be for this project? York – when we go into York city centre to take photographs, I will be focusing on places like the Rive Ouse and the minster from a far to show the landscape. Scarborough – the majority of the photographs I take will be from Scarborough as I enjoy the scenery around the seafront. My main idea was to take photographs of the seafront at Scarborough at night to show all the lights of the arcades. Filey – I will be taking photographs from the cliffs of Filey showing a diverse range of subjects from city to seaside. What camera techniques will you use? Daytime photography – for the images I will be taking during the day (York and Filey) I will be taking advantage of the natural daylight and therefore wont need a flash. I will be using a fast shutter speed as the subject will be still and may include moving objects such as people and animals. Night time photography – images taken at night will need a higher shutter speed and aperture to allow more light into the camera lens. The ISO will be need to be rather high however this could result in the image looking distorted or grainy. I feel like the auto setting white balance will be fine for both day and night photography however the dark photographs may need a cloudy white balance setting to warm the image up slightly.
  • 4. Will any post-production occur? Post production will most likely occur with my photographs to insure they look the best they possibly could. Day time photographs – for the day time images I may need to adjust the hue and saturation to make the colours look more natural. If there are any minor imperfections within the image such as small bits of litter, I will use either the spot healing tool or the clone stamp tool to get rid it. Night time photographs – I will probably use the dodge tool to brighten the lights within the image. I may use the spot healing or clone stamp tool with these set of images as well to correct small parts of the image. Will you use feedback to aid your project? It will be useful to use peer feedback to improve the work I have produced as you often cant see all of the flaws within your own work and therefore it would be useful to have somebody else point out what you could improve on if you were to do the work again. A disadvantage could be, the person viewing your work may not like the whole concept of your photography and therefore wont be able to give constructive criticism. On the contrary, the person reviewing your work may not say any improvement as they may not want to be rude or offend the person who has created the imagery.
  • 5. Health and Safety What legislation could affect your project? (Discuss how the following acts could protect you; • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (Manual labour, carrying camera, tripod, lights etc…) • The health and safety at work act could protect me during the photography stages as the standards set by this act ensure the health and safety to the people who could be protected by any work activity. • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 (Will you be using substances like glue?) • I will not be using any potential dangerous substances during the photography task and therefore, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 Act will not be useful. • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 • This will ensure all of the equipment I will be using is safe and therefore this act could protect me if I use any faulty equipment. • Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 (Using Photoshop?) • As I will be using Photoshop for my post production stages of the photography, the DSE regulations will be protecting me from things such as eye strain and backache from improper use.
  • 6. Risk Assessment What locations will you be using for your project? Wednesday 11th December – (York) Saturday 20th December – (Filey during the day, Scarborough when it gets dark) What equipment will be required? DLSR – I will need a good quality camera in order to produce good photographs that meet a high standard. Tripod – as I will be photographing landscapes, I will need to camera to be still in order to capture the scene. Will you require a model? I will not be using a model within my photography. Will any props be required? Props will not be required within my photography as the focus will be on the landscape as a whole.
  • 8. Contingency Plan What Could Happen? Contingency Plan The forecast is for rain, therefore the conditions are unsuitable for the shoot I will ensure I book a camera so I can produce images on an alternative day Memory card is full or lost Ensure I have a backup card so I can continue shooting The battery may run out on DLSR Before leaving, I will ensure the battery is fully charged and possibly take a spare. There is an event happening in York town or at Scarborough making it hard to get a good photograph. Check before leaving that I will be able to get to the location at ease. The weather forecast is windy and therefore the cliffs are inaccessible. I will check the forecast prier to leaving. Run out of time when you are shooting. I will ensure that I have plenty of time before going out. If I run out of time, I will need to plan another date to take photographs on. There are not enough cameras for everybody. I am planning to use my own DSLR however, if this is not a possibility I will need to check there is enough cameras before hand.
