PROBLEM SOLVING
Practical and Technical Problems
·Equipment-I will be using a camera and that will be sufficient for my equipment, though I have the option of booking kit , I have used a DSLR 600 for my
previous film project and due to my knowledge of the technology lacking in the first year I had issues with exposure, however I have researched and developed my skills on
this camera so if that issue were to arise again I think I would have the skills to fix it. Although it is the norm to use a camera like that, I think some of my shots in this
project may be accomplished by simply using my iPhone. This may sound lazy and uninspired, nevertheless I believe technology this advanced may greet me a better
picture, higher frame rate, and a 4k quality that would not be matched in the average DLSR range provided by York College. Its specs possess the followng: 12
MP camera with autofocus, f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization capable of capturing 4K video at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second, or 1080p video at 30, 60, 120 or
240 frames per second. The frames per second could in fact be a very handy tool as slow motion is one of my researched options for capturing my distressing sights of
habitat, land and air destruction and pollution. Capturing spectacles like flowing water and fast-moving objects such as smoke would be a great source of imagery and a
great option to enduce emotion and empathy from my audience. To avoid any issues or problems I will bring a power pack and wipes to clean the lense for the optimum
and best possile picture I can achieve. However I believe the phone will last throughout a shooting day so that is one of my lesser worries. If I were making a different type
of video that may require higher or lower exposure, I would obviously factor in the use of a suitable camera. I may book a tripod for easier setup because my shot locations
may vary depending on what I think may look best. Handheld rigs and stabelizers for the iPhone could be a viable option, they provide a steady shot if I were to be moving.
As I am going to be stationary for the majority of my shots, I don’t think this would be a sustainable option to invest in. A tripod however, I believe will be a very valuble
piece of equipment in my project as with my stationary camera placing it will provide a stable and level shot, I don’t have to worry about it being crooked like if I filmed
handheld. Furthermore, many short and feature films have been made on iPhones, although I believe they could have shot it better as it was still blatantly obvious it was
shot on a phone. Tangerine, displaying my point, demonstrates how easy it is to make a movie with a phone, but also displaying the fact you probably need clever camera
placements to pull off the feeling of it not being fimed on a phone. The iphone 8 is splash and somewhat water resistant when unscaved and not cracked, this means even
if the weather decides to precipitate, I believe I would want to use an umbrella, but this takes the pressure off filming in the rain.
·Storage and power- My storage will be on my phone which has options to use iCloud so I
would never lose the footage, if I were to have issues with the phone or if it were to be dropped and break, I
would have a backup and insurance to retrieve this footage. As I addressed, I don’t believe power will be a
problem as I have a portable charger that can charge the iPhone 4/5 times fully, as the maximum hours for a
shooting day will be around 3-5 hours, this will prove not to be an issue.
Ability- I believe my ability as a camera operator and cinematographer has improved since my last video
projects. After my research for this project my knowledge on lighting and camera placement has improved
significantly. I now factor in techniques like what time of day I should film for what type of atmosphere I want my
shot to have. As on my previous trailer for a movie was affected by exposure issues, I can now control this aspect
manually with my new equipment, This is now achievable on a DLSR by me but also my iPhone.
Software- i will be using mainy adobe premire pro to edit my video, the software allows me to create and edit my own video the exact way I want
it to be, this is dependent on what I shoot of course. In the software there are many options for colour scopes, if I wanted to I could completely change existing different
colours I could , I have full control on oppacity and saturation which is one of my main sources of filtering as I want to create a drab and desolate, colour starved landscape
and atmosphere. I have used the programme in multiple previous projects, I found it very simple to use and over the two years of the course I have developed my skills so I
believe I can achieve the look i am trying to go for. If this were not to be working on the days, I would want to be editing it would be impede my whole work and schedule, I
am familiar with the exact software and I have used it multiple times so i believe developing my already capable skills will prove useful to me in this project and in future
projects.
Theoretical Problems
·Working outside-All of my shots will be outside, to prepare for this I will be providing coats for myself and my
crew, depending on the weather and tempeture I will be deciding whether its suitable to go to a specific place and risk assess the
situation, due to the recent flooding and storms I have to be weary to weather it is safe to continue production. My lighting will all
be natural to capture the moments I want to. I want to achieve realy bland shots, but it is my goal to include a minimum of 3 dawn
shots and at least 3 dusk shots for the climax of my classical music piece.
·Noise pollution-As my videos sound is purely driven by the classical piece it is not in my schedule to worry about
sound quality and background noise. However, my music quality will have to be sourced correctly so the sound quality is not
scratchy.
·Crew dynamics, transport and locations-My crew will consist of at least one other
person who will drive, I will be paying this person a wage to drive me to my locations in which i want to see including my local wind
farm and power station. I will be financing the production which will have me providing fuel money, food and refreshment costs.
Other costs may include the vehicle breaking down, weather to be unsuitable and dangerous (plus any costs that may pop up to
make the situation more bearable, e.g, food or additional services.)
·Toilet facilities-The ammount of time me and my crew will be spending at my locations will be reletivly short so
toilet facilities may not be an issue that will impact my production. If it were to be a problem the only option during production is
to find facilities using sat nav.
·Production Time- My filming will be my main source of production time, well, all of it, excluding postproduction.
This time will be spent traveling to locations, planning camera placement and height. The total shooting hours may take a couple,
however traveling and planning will be the most time consuming and this may take several hours over the few days.
·Job Roles- Job roles include camera operator, cinematographer and driver. I will be taking on the task of being both
camera operator and cinematographer to authentically achieve my vision as stated in my proposal. If i fall ill or have an incident
that renders me imobile I will outsource my operator and communicate with them to the exact shots I may want and give them
some decisiveness to whether they see an opportunity for good looking shot.
·Health & Safety- As I am being driven to my places, I will need to pick a suitable driver, one who I deem fit to be a
safe driver. Relying on one person may deem to be an inferior decision than asking a few people to see if they could be free.
Because, as I don’t have a car to myself, I will be outsourcing this transport.

Test 1
Filters and saturation, exposure, auto focus.
I will be testing to see what my optimum saturation level shall be. This is to achieve my desolate landscape idea drought of colour and life, the colour and life that is captured is then made to seem sort of
depressing as it is sharing its landscape with these monsterous urban constructions. My first test was obtained by using footage I have aquired in Lilehammer, Norway. Whilst skiing I saw the perfect
opportunity to capture some of these awesome spectecles I am trying to produce. This has given me some inspiration for when I am going to go out and film at drax power station, It shows me handheld
footage cand be useable to an extent, as I was in transit my slight hand movements movement is shrouded by the movement of the ski lift. So when I decide to film on a normal level ground i will utilize a
tripod for the steady, still look I am aiming for. In my test I have developed an accumilation of different effects that include saturation, sharpness, exposure and lastly, changing the colour scopes completely,
however I am trying to stray away from this as I want a natural coloured shot that I can tweak other aspects of for the authenticity of the awe in question of the image, including power stations and windfarms.
In my tests, most of the colours, except from the sky, are either close to black or white so the
saturation difference is not as visible as it could be, I will factor this in when creating my next test,
including as much colour as I can. Other than this you can cearly see the difference from the original
and edited one. In Adobe premire pro I have used the saturation, fade and vibrance tool to edit the
factor of each one. With saturation, I have lowerd the ammount so a unit of zero would mean the
image would be black and white, and the highest value being 200, with the most prevalent
distinction between the colours being used.
After my previous test I believed I could change the look to look even more depressing and lifeless, I did this by utilising the saturation and fade tool, by
reducing the unit of fade that was activated, this gives me more of a clear view to see colour and most importantly the ammount the colour is saturated, it
allowed me to lower the saturation more for more a dystopian look.
I have developed skills using the colour
wheel tint, this is where I can change
the colour of the light that is being
projected onto the area of which I
have filmed. With the shadow tint, the
darker colours become tinted based on
the colour I select in the wheel,
whearas the higlight tint deduces
what the brighter colours and shades
will be. By manipulating these tools, i
can create different looking
environments. The crosses on the
wheels represent the higlight and
shadow tint, by utilizing this I can
change both simultaneously which give
me this heavily tinted image.
Using a light blue shadow tinit and a
yellow/orange tint gives me this very
cinematic look
The shadow and highlights are both shifted
to an orange tint for a more warm/retro look
This one is similar to the one pictured above
however the highlight tinit is also blue which
give off a colder and more unforgiving look,
whereas the one above is more cinematic.
These tinits are shifted to more of a
yellow/orange look, this is like the one
above however it also gives off a more
cinematic look
I was unsure to whether or not I would use this technique and effect in this project,
however I believe in some shots I may be able to utilize this tool and make my shot
look more depressing to induce more emotion from my audience.

Problem solving fmp 202022020200020202002 (1)

  • 3. ·Equipment-I will be using a camera and that will be sufficient for my equipment, though I have the option of booking kit , I have used a DSLR 600 for my previous film project and due to my knowledge of the technology lacking in the first year I had issues with exposure, however I have researched and developed my skills on this camera so if that issue were to arise again I think I would have the skills to fix it. Although it is the norm to use a camera like that, I think some of my shots in this project may be accomplished by simply using my iPhone. This may sound lazy and uninspired, nevertheless I believe technology this advanced may greet me a better picture, higher frame rate, and a 4k quality that would not be matched in the average DLSR range provided by York College. Its specs possess the followng: 12 MP camera with autofocus, f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization capable of capturing 4K video at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second, or 1080p video at 30, 60, 120 or 240 frames per second. The frames per second could in fact be a very handy tool as slow motion is one of my researched options for capturing my distressing sights of habitat, land and air destruction and pollution. Capturing spectacles like flowing water and fast-moving objects such as smoke would be a great source of imagery and a great option to enduce emotion and empathy from my audience. To avoid any issues or problems I will bring a power pack and wipes to clean the lense for the optimum and best possile picture I can achieve. However I believe the phone will last throughout a shooting day so that is one of my lesser worries. If I were making a different type of video that may require higher or lower exposure, I would obviously factor in the use of a suitable camera. I may book a tripod for easier setup because my shot locations may vary depending on what I think may look best. Handheld rigs and stabelizers for the iPhone could be a viable option, they provide a steady shot if I were to be moving. As I am going to be stationary for the majority of my shots, I don’t think this would be a sustainable option to invest in. A tripod however, I believe will be a very valuble piece of equipment in my project as with my stationary camera placing it will provide a stable and level shot, I don’t have to worry about it being crooked like if I filmed handheld. Furthermore, many short and feature films have been made on iPhones, although I believe they could have shot it better as it was still blatantly obvious it was shot on a phone. Tangerine, displaying my point, demonstrates how easy it is to make a movie with a phone, but also displaying the fact you probably need clever camera placements to pull off the feeling of it not being fimed on a phone. The iphone 8 is splash and somewhat water resistant when unscaved and not cracked, this means even if the weather decides to precipitate, I believe I would want to use an umbrella, but this takes the pressure off filming in the rain. ·Storage and power- My storage will be on my phone which has options to use iCloud so I would never lose the footage, if I were to have issues with the phone or if it were to be dropped and break, I would have a backup and insurance to retrieve this footage. As I addressed, I don’t believe power will be a problem as I have a portable charger that can charge the iPhone 4/5 times fully, as the maximum hours for a shooting day will be around 3-5 hours, this will prove not to be an issue. Ability- I believe my ability as a camera operator and cinematographer has improved since my last video projects. After my research for this project my knowledge on lighting and camera placement has improved significantly. I now factor in techniques like what time of day I should film for what type of atmosphere I want my shot to have. As on my previous trailer for a movie was affected by exposure issues, I can now control this aspect manually with my new equipment, This is now achievable on a DLSR by me but also my iPhone.
  • 4. Software- i will be using mainy adobe premire pro to edit my video, the software allows me to create and edit my own video the exact way I want it to be, this is dependent on what I shoot of course. In the software there are many options for colour scopes, if I wanted to I could completely change existing different colours I could , I have full control on oppacity and saturation which is one of my main sources of filtering as I want to create a drab and desolate, colour starved landscape and atmosphere. I have used the programme in multiple previous projects, I found it very simple to use and over the two years of the course I have developed my skills so I believe I can achieve the look i am trying to go for. If this were not to be working on the days, I would want to be editing it would be impede my whole work and schedule, I am familiar with the exact software and I have used it multiple times so i believe developing my already capable skills will prove useful to me in this project and in future projects.
  • 6. ·Working outside-All of my shots will be outside, to prepare for this I will be providing coats for myself and my crew, depending on the weather and tempeture I will be deciding whether its suitable to go to a specific place and risk assess the situation, due to the recent flooding and storms I have to be weary to weather it is safe to continue production. My lighting will all be natural to capture the moments I want to. I want to achieve realy bland shots, but it is my goal to include a minimum of 3 dawn shots and at least 3 dusk shots for the climax of my classical music piece. ·Noise pollution-As my videos sound is purely driven by the classical piece it is not in my schedule to worry about sound quality and background noise. However, my music quality will have to be sourced correctly so the sound quality is not scratchy. ·Crew dynamics, transport and locations-My crew will consist of at least one other person who will drive, I will be paying this person a wage to drive me to my locations in which i want to see including my local wind farm and power station. I will be financing the production which will have me providing fuel money, food and refreshment costs. Other costs may include the vehicle breaking down, weather to be unsuitable and dangerous (plus any costs that may pop up to make the situation more bearable, e.g, food or additional services.) ·Toilet facilities-The ammount of time me and my crew will be spending at my locations will be reletivly short so toilet facilities may not be an issue that will impact my production. If it were to be a problem the only option during production is to find facilities using sat nav. ·Production Time- My filming will be my main source of production time, well, all of it, excluding postproduction. This time will be spent traveling to locations, planning camera placement and height. The total shooting hours may take a couple, however traveling and planning will be the most time consuming and this may take several hours over the few days. ·Job Roles- Job roles include camera operator, cinematographer and driver. I will be taking on the task of being both camera operator and cinematographer to authentically achieve my vision as stated in my proposal. If i fall ill or have an incident that renders me imobile I will outsource my operator and communicate with them to the exact shots I may want and give them some decisiveness to whether they see an opportunity for good looking shot. ·Health & Safety- As I am being driven to my places, I will need to pick a suitable driver, one who I deem fit to be a safe driver. Relying on one person may deem to be an inferior decision than asking a few people to see if they could be free. Because, as I don’t have a car to myself, I will be outsourcing this transport.
  • 7. use of an automobile . Being outside/ anywhere affected by weather Could crash, Break down, get lost. Dangerous weather and areas that have been affected by flooding Camera operator and driver. Camera operator and driver High, medium, medium. High Obide by the laws of the road, check engine and make sure MOT is up to date and use a Sat Nav or map. Use the weather forecast to check if the weather is suitable Medium, medium, low. Medium
  • 8. Test 1 Filters and saturation, exposure, auto focus. I will be testing to see what my optimum saturation level shall be. This is to achieve my desolate landscape idea drought of colour and life, the colour and life that is captured is then made to seem sort of depressing as it is sharing its landscape with these monsterous urban constructions. My first test was obtained by using footage I have aquired in Lilehammer, Norway. Whilst skiing I saw the perfect opportunity to capture some of these awesome spectecles I am trying to produce. This has given me some inspiration for when I am going to go out and film at drax power station, It shows me handheld footage cand be useable to an extent, as I was in transit my slight hand movements movement is shrouded by the movement of the ski lift. So when I decide to film on a normal level ground i will utilize a tripod for the steady, still look I am aiming for. In my test I have developed an accumilation of different effects that include saturation, sharpness, exposure and lastly, changing the colour scopes completely, however I am trying to stray away from this as I want a natural coloured shot that I can tweak other aspects of for the authenticity of the awe in question of the image, including power stations and windfarms.
  • 9. In my tests, most of the colours, except from the sky, are either close to black or white so the saturation difference is not as visible as it could be, I will factor this in when creating my next test, including as much colour as I can. Other than this you can cearly see the difference from the original and edited one. In Adobe premire pro I have used the saturation, fade and vibrance tool to edit the factor of each one. With saturation, I have lowerd the ammount so a unit of zero would mean the image would be black and white, and the highest value being 200, with the most prevalent distinction between the colours being used.
  • 10. After my previous test I believed I could change the look to look even more depressing and lifeless, I did this by utilising the saturation and fade tool, by reducing the unit of fade that was activated, this gives me more of a clear view to see colour and most importantly the ammount the colour is saturated, it allowed me to lower the saturation more for more a dystopian look.
  • 11. I have developed skills using the colour wheel tint, this is where I can change the colour of the light that is being projected onto the area of which I have filmed. With the shadow tint, the darker colours become tinted based on the colour I select in the wheel, whearas the higlight tint deduces what the brighter colours and shades will be. By manipulating these tools, i can create different looking environments. The crosses on the wheels represent the higlight and shadow tint, by utilizing this I can change both simultaneously which give me this heavily tinted image. Using a light blue shadow tinit and a yellow/orange tint gives me this very cinematic look The shadow and highlights are both shifted to an orange tint for a more warm/retro look This one is similar to the one pictured above however the highlight tinit is also blue which give off a colder and more unforgiving look, whereas the one above is more cinematic. These tinits are shifted to more of a yellow/orange look, this is like the one above however it also gives off a more cinematic look I was unsure to whether or not I would use this technique and effect in this project, however I believe in some shots I may be able to utilize this tool and make my shot look more depressing to induce more emotion from my audience.
  • 12. Test 2 Camera type and rig My rig that I will be taking with me
