The construction sector has been documented to be a leading industry in occupational injuries
although it contributes greatly in the economy by employing many people. This is due to an
ineffective safety process applied in the construction sector which is characterized by complex
contributing challenges. These include an attitude of unwillingness on the part of construction
workers to follow laid down mechanisms provided by managers. Management is also reported to be
not committed to safety and health issues as it concentrates on profit making in their institutions. 1.0

Knee Pads Essay
3. KP Industries Knee Pro best knee pads for construction work
So far the knee pads we have covered are primarily constructed out durable soft fabrics, so with the
KP Industries Knee Pro we introduce a pair of hard shelled knee pads primarily constructed out of
plastic. You may be thinking "isn't a hard–shell knee pad going to be stiff and hard to move around
in?" Well that's not the case with this product. KP has designed these to be ultra–flexible, and this
combination of a hard outer shell with movability is why we chose these as the best knee pads for
construction work.
Hard–shell knee pads are ideal for construction work because of they help protect you against the

Artificial Intelligence ( Unmanned Aerial Vehicle ) Essay
Within the construction industry, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is beginning to take jobsites by storm. If
someone were to walk onto a jobsite today, someone in that location would be using AI. Current
uses of AI today span from mobile technology that supervision uses to man a jobsite to an actual
robot pouring concrete or welding a pipe. With the technology improvements being made daily,
there will be a day few people will consist of the workforce on the job, and the rest will be some sort
of robotics. Among the Artificial Intelligence being used or that will be the future are: Drones/UAV
(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), SAM (Semi–Automated Mason), robotic welding, Autonomous TMA
(Truck Mounted Attenuator) Truck, and Contour Crafting.
Drones/UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) A lot of people may think of drones, also known as UAV
(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), as the toys children play with in the yard after opening their Christmas
gifts, but for the construction industry, it means so much more. Drones are capable of a multitude of
things, and for business owner's and clients, the most important thing is getting the job done sooner
with reduced costs. Previously, layouts of jobsites took weeks. The land had to be surveyed to verify
if the soil was appropriate and whether it needed to be graded or not. Areas had to be marked off
where each trade would store their material. Physical surveying of the area with tripods had to be
done, as well, for the specific layout and placement of the

Humphrey Mcqueen's Battle Over Builders
Humphrey McQueen
–At Battle over Builders' Labourers OHS
Good evening, everyone! The intellectual I chose is Humphrey McQueen. Tonight, I would like talk
about his battle over the builders' labourers OHS.
Recently, there has been reignited interest in the ABCC (Australian Building and Construction
Commission) and the Building and Construction OH&S (Occupational Health and safety); since
these are the central issues which triggered the double dissolution. And now we are on the process of
early election, because of ABCC.
The Coalition asserts the ABCC will monitor and promote appropriate standards of conduct
throughout the building and construction industry, while the construction unions regard it as an
attempt to weaken their posit ion.
Humphrey McQueen, as a prominent historian, has undertaken extensive research and analysis in
building and construction OH&S field seven years ago and demonstrates his arguments proactively
in his books Framework of Flesh in 2009, We Built This Country in 2011.
I would like shed more light on these two books tonight and the rest contents I will share with you
are:
A brief introduction about McQueen, the major arguments in these two books, and then I will
discuss his political standpoint, the contributions and controversies related to his works in building
and construction industry. Truly, McQueen is a historian, but his prodigious research covers far
more comprehensive than history, which includes economics, politics, environment, media,

The Safety Of Construction Sites
Introduction The CDM regulations were put in place to help improve the overall safety of
construction sites. Systems were put in place to help eliminate hazards from as early as the design
process whilst effectively communicating and cooperating throughout the lifetime of the job. In
2015 details had been updated and changed from the 2007 regulations that will be explored later in
this report. Also covered in this report is the Lofstedt review which explores the 2007 CDM
Regulations discovering potential flaws whilst also suggesting improvements that are to be made.
Task 1 The Lofstedt report reviews the entirety of the health and safety acts and regulations
conducted by Professor Ragnar E Lofstedt to help reduce the burden of health and safety regulations
on business whilst conintuing to maintain the standard of health and safety that has developed over
the years. The report overall did in fact conclude that there would be no need to make major changes
to the current regulations however a couple of amendments could improve the regulations in a
business sense as well as for health and safety (Lofstedt, 2011). Lofstedt Report Findings and
Suggestions 1. One of the first findings stated in the report was that currently health and safety
regulations apply to people self–employed however other countries apply the legislation only to
those engaged in activities that are particularly hazardous or carry a risk of injury or harm to others
(Lofstedt, 2011). Therefore the report

Shout Dagoberto Gilb Summary
When you think about construction workers what comes to your mind? Do you think the
stereotypical thoughts that almost everyone thinks about construction workers? I think that
construction workers don't often get the credit that they deserve for the hard work that they do.
Having a boyfriend that is a construction worker makes me realize how little credit they do get for
their hard work that they put in week in and week out. In the short story "Shout", by Dagoberto
Gilb, the protagonist is a Hispanic construction worker. The title of this short story describes this
story perfectly, because that's just what the protagonist likes to do, "Shout"! This story is about a
construction worker who comes home from a long hot day at work and is yelling ... Show more

This story starts off as a perfect representation of that. When the protagonist gets home from work
the first thing he does is start yelling at his wife and starts drinking beer. He'd down the first one
right at the refrigerator (Gilb 541). Their children, three boys, were seven, four, and almost two
(Gilb 541). The man yelled at them too when they continued to be loud after he got home.
"Everybody shut up and be quiet!" he yelled. The kids started to get upset and the baby started
crying which caused his wife to glare at him. "You know sometimes I wish you were a man cuz I
wouldn't let you get away with looks like that. I wouldn't take half the shit I take from you." (Gilb
541). When you read more into the story you realize that the man has just gotten laid off from his
previous job and he is scared that the same thing was going to happen with this job. He makes
statements like "If he's gonna get me most likely it'll be tomorrow", "There's other jobs", and "All of
'em end no matter what." (Gilb 542). He takes all of his frustration and worries out on his family.
Throughout the story, he and his wife continue to fight while the rest of his family hides in a room in
their apartment. After some time he came back in the room to talk to her. "I'm sorry" he said. "You

What Are The Hidden And Indirect Costs Of An Incident?
A Health & Safety study was conducted that revealed that hidden and indirect costs of an incident
could be 36 times greater than the direct costs of the incident. The full cost of an incident can be
split into 2 categories; the visible and insured costs, which are essentially the tip of the iceberg that
shows the obvious costs of an accident. Usually the company is insured for these costs. Visible costs
could be the employer's liability, public liability or damage to property. Secondly the invisible costs
and uninsured costs, these costs are usually harder to quantify but are still there and relevant. These
costs could be sick pay, production schedule disruption and delay, overtime & temporary labour,

It can prove to be very difficult to manage a construction site as projects and sites are short–lived in
nature, constantly changing in status, covering a huge range of construction processes of varying
complexity and scale. The work processes and people change almost daily on sites, and projects
involve diverse groups who are physically separated from the site, i.e. those who procure, design,
specify, manage and maintain buildings and structures as well as those who undertake the process of
building them.
"Soft Causation". Effective health & safety management starts with pre–site planning and
development of safe systems of work for any construction project. It is the intention of the CDM
regulations to encourage H&S planning throughout the design stage of the project, research into
construction accidents has illustrated that a lack of H&S planning is often the underlying cause.
Incidents can happen when there is Inadequate planning of the job, specifically when there is; no
method statement, no risk assessment, no safe system of work, inadequate risk

Working At Heights And Working With Excavation And...
INTRODUCTION
Health and Safety is a key factor in built environment. This is due to the increasing levels of
accidents. With the modern complexity in its built environment, the modern buildings become more
sophisticated to be built. In order to build these structures the workers get exposed to many hazards.
In modern construction the Health and Safety measures are critical in order to reduce the risk levels
and to offer a safe environment for the workers to work upon.
Construction work always includes heavy machinery and the handling of hazardous materials, tools
and the trade is traditionally plagued with high accident rates. International statistics are no better,
and governments around the world have implemented health and safety measures for the protection
of the workers.
In this report I will describe facts of working at heights and working with excavation and trenches
that the company has been reported most of the accidents in the last year. I strongly believe that this
will help to build a risk low working space for the workers at our construction sites as we are
responsible for our employees.
WORKING AT HEIGHTS
Work at height means workers may work in a place where he or she will be injured if they fell from
the existing level to another level. This could happen above or below ground level. Most of them are
reported when they work above ground level.
Data from a long–term study indicates the types of falls that are causing workers a serious injury or
death.

Construction Industry : A Dangerous Field Of Work
Introduction The construction industry is a dangerous field of work. Although the construction
industry and several agencies of government have adopted various measures to make job sites safer,
construction is still a risky field of work. The number of injuries and deaths in the construction field
is large than most of the other fields of work. Hence, it is paramount to understand the reasons
behind the construction accidents and to develop strategies in order to avoid accidents and improve
safety. There has been a lot of research done to know the causes of injuries and fatalities occurred on
the construction site. A lot of jobs are being conducted simultaneously on the construction site and
several workers are employed for these jobs. Due to the pressure of completing work on time the
work on the construction projects is always fast moving. As a result, safety responsibilities can
become less important which increases the chances of accidents. The need to complete work within
the specified time draws the attention away from the safety duties which increases the likelihood for
hazards to be ignored. In the several researches conducted in the past, several causes have been
identified for the accidents that occur on the construct sites which include the involvement of
management, workplace, workers, equipment and other construction related factors. It is vital to
understand their responsibilities by construction professionals like designers, architects, general

Time and Motion Study
* Model for the construction industry using pre–determined times Jasper Van Gilsa, Leo
Vaningelgema Abstract This paper is based on our work experience with Office–line. This company
prepares standard times for companies in the industrial sector. Standard time is productive time that
is required and achieved by an employee. Standard time contains everything that is necessary for the
work specified to be completed. The reason why Office–line only prepare standard times for the
industrial sector rather than the construction industry is due to the repetitive nature of the work. One
example is the car industry which uses assembly lines. In the construction sector, this kind of
repetition is not so evident. There is repetitiveness in some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This includes that we have to make a more than one measurement to become a reliable average for
these tasks. A second importance that we need to take notice of using chrono, is the performance
level at which the employee is working. An execution time of a specific person can not be used as a
reference for or employees and as a consequency we can't set these specific times as standards.
Tools that can help us by adding a tempo to our measurements are tempo scales. These scales will
make sure that execution times will be calibrated and that we become standard times. Standard times
can be executed by any valid employee in a social acceptable space of time. Bedaux–scale This
tempo scale was designed by the Frenchman Bedaux. He saw that not all employees were working
at the same performance level. So he had the idea to add a value from 0 to 100 to the performance
levels where 100 stands for the maximum pace which can only be performed for a short period and
zero for doing nothing at all. A score of 60 is the level every valid employee should be able to
perform for a complete week, 8 hours per day. For his scale, Bedaux compared the working tempo
with walking (60) and running (100) that we know starts from a speed of 7,5 km/h. Walking at the
speed of 4,5 km/h matches the score of 60 Bedaux–points. Berenschot–scale * For some people the
Bedaux–scale was a bit

Gopher: A Short Story
Several people just buzz right on by Gopher, an interstate town in northern Kansas. The side closest
to the interstate, the north side as it was called, was full of tourist shops, gas stations, and little Ma
and Pop inns. No one actually lived anywhere near the interstate, as they all hated how the drivers
were allowed to speed and the garbage that frequently came flying out of the passing cars.
Therefore, the townsfolk of Gopher lived on what they called the south side. Never had an interstate
driver come relatively close to the south side; consequently, it was the citizens' haven. It was an
unspoken agreement between the citizens and the passing tourists that the tourists stayed far away
from the homes of the families in Gopher, Kansas. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Clayton was looking for the town all around but he could not find it however. Therefore, in that case
he had to try to make his truck go on the side of the road the best he could. After he got it off the

Clayton saw an old car shop. It was open, so Clayton walked in and said, "Is anybody here." I little

Intermodal steel shipping containers have been put to use for various things when they no longer

into building construction site mobile offices. A current trend gaining strength in the architectural
community is transforming steel intermodal containers into the basis for homes and light business
construction applications.
Fortunes of a construction development using an innovative approach are influenced by the research
done at the front end of the project. Here we will take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of
implementing shipping containers as part of your building.

The intermodals will examine containers and condemn them if broken welds, twisted frames, or pin
holes are identified. For use in construction, some issues could be less significant than others.
Handling
The size and weight of the containers will require them to be placed by the crane or forklift.
Traditional brick block and lumber construction materials are commonly moved by hand
Chemicals
A container can hold a wide variety of freight while in its working life. Spills or contamination
might have happened on the inside surfaces and will have to be cleaned before habitation. Ideally,
the paint on every internal surface should be removed to bare metal and re–painted with a non–toxic
paint product. In addition, chemicals released from paint and sealants used in manufacture of the
shipping container might be harmful.
Temperature & Humidity Extremes
Steel is a conductor of heat. Containers used for human occupancy in an area with extreme
temperature variations will need to be better insulated than most brick, block or wood structures. In
temperate climates, moist interior air condenses against the steel; rust will form unless the steel is
well sealed and insulated.

In addition to this, corporate commitment to health, safety and environment (HSE) issues such as
zero accident policy within construction and real estate projects can also be considered as a part of
CSR. Furthermore, construction and real estate industries recently have started to give place to
social issues such as giving support to education, being sponsor for sports and cultural activities,
besides environmental issues in their CSR policies in order to gain more reputation in the public
aspect. First of all in environmental aspect, companies should be responsible not only to their
stakeholders or clients but also to the society which they work in because society is directly
influenced from environmental impacts. In construction and real estate industry, organizations
frequently prove their commitment to environmental responsibility by environmental management
certificates, which are given by independent certification institutions such as British Standards

is aware of environmental impacts which may cause from its activities and will try to eliminate or at
least minimize them, with its BSI certificate of Environmental Management System – ISO

The main point of this project is to find out the reason why accidents are still happening on
construction in relation to Construction (Design and Management) [CDM] regulations. These
Regulations originally came in to place in 1994 and then were heavily revised in 2007 when the
regulations were brought together with the Construction (Health Safety and Welfare) Regulations
1996. The purpose of this review is to both further understand the CDM Regulations and investigate
why accidents in construction are still occurring by looking at the following possibilities: Are the
Regulations being understood? Are the Regulations being followed? Are the Regulations being
enforced? Are workers taking responsibility for their actions? This project will focus on Glasgow
based construction projects purely due time constraints and practicality issues and looking at the
regulations for contractors. . According to HSE (2013)

contractor and construction professionals. Contractors must also learn to humble themselves to
minimize fumbling in fear of objections as that may be the lead to further doubt and demurrals.
Accepting objections as part of learning is vital for composure and keeping the right attitude. The
construction industry prosperity anchors on team playing as an individual cannot solely manage

technology with a very various user. 3D concrete printing is an innovation of erection process that
will provide significant progress in construction industry. Construction execution is evolving
frequently due to growing challenge and complication in projects, which require efficient, safe, and
fast method to deliver their project. The 3D concrete printing will play important role in
sustainability in terms of optimizes recycled materials usage, consumption of energy, and
environmental impact. With Final design of the project one click can build multistory house in one
day. Concrete is extruded throw nozzle to construct structural component layer by layer without
utilizing framework. The method will apply the way we design building component easily with less
error potential.
– Introduction:
3D concrete printing or also known as Contour Crafting (CC) is invented at University of South
California (USC) and developed by Dr. Behrokh Khoshnevis. It can print various martials, metal,

The Bim Capabilities And Bim Maturity Level
Project: To assess the BIM capabilities and BIM Maturity Level. Having established exiting BIM
maturity level, propose measures for achieving level 2 BIM by 2016.
According to the Government Construction Strategy document in 2011, the "Government will
require fully collaborative Level 2 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation
and data being electronic) as a mini¬¬¬¬¬mum by 2016."
For the three weeks I am working at the London Bridge office of Jacob's, I intend to:
Understand exactly what BIM is and the basic criteria for each BIM level.
Evaluate where Jacob's is in relation to these BIM levels.
Suggest improvements as to how Jacob's can reach the Government's target by 2016.
The use of level 2 BIM in all public sector construction work is imperative as it affects everybody
on a day to day basis. Using BIM software will not only reduce the amount of time spent at the
construction site, but it will also reduce costs due to errors. One of the current projects Jacob's is
working on using BIM software is the Crossrail (Europe's largest construction project). This will
"increase London 's rail capacity by 10 per cent and bring 1.5 million new commuters", not to
mention bringing an estimated 42 billion to the UK economy and creating 30,000 jobs. Due to the
use of some aspects of BIM, the process of creating the Crossrail will not only be faster and more
efficient but will also help the UK's economy.

Technology And The Construction Industry Essay
Abstract The construction industry has been around since the beginning of civilization and since that
time people have continually tried to find better ways to build. The speed with which the
construction industry moves is unlike any other. Things are done very differently than they were 20
years ago, and things will likely be done in a new way 10 years from now. The vast history and
seemingly exponential growth of the industry means people must find innovative ways to gain an
advantage. Drone technology has expanded in recent years from military innovations to civilian
applications, and while it may not appear personal drones provide much benefit to the construction
industry, their limitless applications yield innumerous opportunities on a jobsite. This paper explores
some of the many uses a drone can have to advance the construction industry, as well as the
liabilities which also come with this new technology. This paper will focus on the areas of
efficiency, safety and security; how drone uses can make jobsites run smoother and safer, while also
recognizing how drones will add the long list of concerns contractors face on a daily basis. Drone
Applications and Liabilities On Construction Jobsites In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles
(UAV), or drones, have transitioned from primarily military applications to use in the private sector;
being used to film movies, delivering packages for Amazon, and even personal entertainment.
Because of the advancement in drone

3D printing technology was start in the mid–1990s, this technology construct the real object from a
digital model from computer, layer by layer using certain material in powered state. In the past, this
technology is applied in mold manufacturing, and nowadays, it is being used in direct
manufacturing. With the improvement of this technology, more and more items can be done through
3D printing. However, the potential of the 3D printing is far more than DIY small household items.
In March of 2013, a Chinese firm has claimed to have done 3d printing of ten houses within 24
hours. Two years later, in January of 2015, they has further demonstrate its technology with a five
story apartment building, compete with decorative element both inside and outside. In fact, this
technology is now overturn the traditional construction industry.
In the building construction, building layer by layer has been practiced for several thousand years.

The Heart Of Road Construction Workers
The Heart of Road Construction Workers We all have driven by a construction zone or been a
passenger. Before you drive into a road construction zone you will see warning signs indicating that
you are approaching a specific work zone. Typically, these signs will say "Three miles ahead work
zone, speed limit 55 and any injury to a worker you will be fined 10,000 dollars." Next, you will see
men and women working and others supervising. One of the construction workers will be holding a
sign to indicate to slow down, right on the side of the road saying slow down. Once you pass the
worker holding a sign to slow down, hopefully you can see others following the directions. All you

designed to keep their hard working men and women safe, heathy, and their employee's happy. Each
employer of Hubbard team must watch and embrace a Zero Accident video. This video contains all
the knowledge you need to be safe while working on the construction site. Also what surprised me
the most about this video was the 30 minute section pertaining to sexual harassment prevention in
the work area. According to Frederick, the newest employee of Hubbard Road Construction
Company, you must really pay attention to the video and make the video apart of your life, and
support prevention as a way of life. Frederick explained that they are all responsible for each other's
lives and making sure that they are all safe. Frederick continued to explain that each month they
have to watch the Zero Accident safety video as a group. Hubbard's road construction company
remains trying to prevent accidents and also forcing their employees to take safety and sexual

Managing Occupational Safety And Health Essay
In the United States, construction has always been one of the most dangerous industries to work in.
The number of fatalities that occur in this industry year after year demonstrate this. In 2012, 19.6%
of worker fatalities, in private industry, were in construction (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2013)
despite the industry comprising only 6.8% of the total work force. This epidemic is not unique to the
United States. Essentially every country faces similar problems regarding construction safety. For
example, in 2004 the Australian construction industry employed approximately 8% of the countries
workforce. However, workers compensation statistics indicated that the industry's incidence rate was
28.6 per 1000 employees, nearly twice the overall industry average (Zou, Redman & Windon,
2008). Efforts to improve upon these dismal statistics have intensified in recent years in large part
due to the escalation of successful liability suits and the effect the rising cost of workers
compensation insurance has on a company's ability to do business.
Managing Occupational safety and health in the construction industry is difficult to manage for
various reasons. The ever–changing environment, a persistently varying workforce and the various
building methods utilized by the industry complicate safety measures. Those in the construction
industry often view safety as problematic and as result safety solutions are only applied to the
minimum limit allowed by law. A common outlook in the

Cloud Storage For The Field Of Pre Construction
Cloud Storage
Cloud storage is one of the important application of mobile technology. Cloud storage can be
described as a service, which allows you to manage and maintain the data remotely. Cloud storage
allows you to save your files online, so that you can access it from anywhere in the world with the
help of internet. Additionally, cloud storage syncs the data making sure that all the devices contain
the same data. Any project manager knows how difficult it is to have access to current information
and many conflicts can be avoided if the same information is available to all the parties in the
project. Another important use of cloud storage is in the field of Pre–Construction. For example,
Cloud Takeoff is an application which allows the estimators to perform digital takeoffs on any
platforms, from windows or Mac or IOS or Android. Since these takeoffs are present in cloud, users
can collaborate on the documents using different devices. Cloud Takeoff can do tasks which can
previously be performed on programs like Onscreen takeoff. Cloud takeoff helps in preparing more
accurate bids than the bids produced by PC based software by increasing collaboration between the
parties involved. There are many applications available which provides cloud storage. Some of the
examples are Dropbox, Box.net.

The fact that more than 50% emissions have been generated from the construction equipment that
has been neglected. In order to calculate the total emission of the construction phase, equipment
classification will be very helpful. However, the traditional method of classifying the action is time
consuming[1] and is prone to the human error. In order to improve the productivity and enhance the
accuracy of this practice, a new method in visual monitoring of equipment activity can be adopted.
After that, the total emission can be the multiplier of the emission factor and activity duration. In
this paper, the first section will be the overview of the industry and related previous work. Next, the
possible solution will be presented including the feature localization and recognition. It is also
accompanied with the experiment test of the algorithm. After that, the emission factor of different
equipment activity will be gathered and presented. The potential benefits and limitation of the
method will be discussed afterwards. Conclusion and future development will be in the last section.

Nature of Construction Industries: The nature of works in a construction site made it as a dangerous
workplace. The hazards and dangers that are present in the work place are innumerable, causing
injury, illness, or even death to site workers. These dangers include the COSHH risks that comprise
the hazardous substances that include chemicals, dust and others. There are also accidents related to
injuries due to manual handing, being hit by heavy equipment, and many more. The physical
injuries, emotional stress, and illness of construction workers are very costly for the management.
The legislation for the health and safety in the construction industries is also increasing with the last
three decade. There is great responsibility placed among the supervisors and site managers. In effect,
the qualifications set for these positions also increased (NEBOSH, 2013). The nature of the works
done in construction industry is dynamic where change is prevalent from time to time and the sites
are almost always temporary. Majority of the employees in this industry have little skills and low

The Construction Industry Has Incurred Losses From Meager...
The construction industry has incurred losses from meager productivity as compared to other
industries (Choi et al. 2013). Productivity can be defined as the relative measure of labor efficiency
in dollar value (Choi et al. 2013). Construction managers require prompt and instantaneous access to
blueprints, CAD drawings, budgets, schedules and purchase orders. Moreover, many of these
documents are requisite to be perpetuated for several years, due to security and legal concerns. As
the industry grows, its offices eventually stagger beneath the heavy load of paper. A paperless work
environment, along with mobile technology, offers numerous opportunities to level the paper
mountain and increase the productivity of construction processes (Moore 2009). Many construction
leaders promote paperless work environments to increase productivity by automating tasks and
exhilarating collaboration (Bowden et al 2006). Anterior research conducted by the Construction
Industry Institute (CII) concludes that access to information on construction site begets more
productivity in the working environment (Mills and Chen 2008). This serves as a foreground in
identifying paperless mobile computing solutions capable of meeting construction industry
requirements. Historically, research on the use of Mobile IT applications in construction started in

Safe design is the process of identifying, assessing, and eliminating hazards or potential risks that
may occur in the workplace during construction or the life cycle of a designed product (Breslin,
2007). Designers have not traditionally addressed safety in their design and are often unaware of
how their design impacts safety, yet research has shown that in construction project management,
many safety risks may be eliminated or mitigated and opportunities seized at the design stage if
proper analysis and assessment is carried out (Zou et al, 2008). Countries around the world have
realized this to be true and numerous countries have passed regulation placing some of the safety
burden on designers. This paper reviews the literature on the design and implementation of safe
design techniques and programs in the construction industry.
Why safe design?
Many times, risks faced by contractors exist at no fault of their own. That is, in some cases the
contractor is bound by a design that places specific hazards on the construction site. Designers who
are cognizant of and responsive to their effort on construction safety would aid in making jobsites
safer for construction workers (Gambatese et al, 1997). Situations such as these led the National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to create a safe design concept, prevention through
design. Prevention

  • 9. Artificial Intelligence ( Unmanned Aerial Vehicle ) Essay Within the construction industry, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is beginning to take jobsites by storm. If someone were to walk onto a jobsite today, someone in that location would be using AI. Current uses of AI today span from mobile technology that supervision uses to man a jobsite to an actual robot pouring concrete or welding a pipe. With the technology improvements being made daily, there will be a day few people will consist of the workforce on the job, and the rest will be some sort of robotics. Among the Artificial Intelligence being used or that will be the future are: Drones/UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), SAM (Semi–Automated Mason), robotic welding, Autonomous TMA (Truck Mounted Attenuator) Truck, and Contour Crafting. Drones/UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) A lot of people may think of drones, also known as UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), as the toys children play with in the yard after opening their Christmas gifts, but for the construction industry, it means so much more. Tonight, I would like talk about his battle over the builders' labourers OHS. Recently, there has been reignited interest in the ABCC (Australian Building and Construction Commission) and the Building and Construction OH&S (Occupational Health and safety); since these are the central issues which triggered the double dissolution. And now we are on the process of early election, because of ABCC. The Coalition asserts the ABCC will monitor and promote appropriate standards of conduct throughout the building and construction industry, while the construction unions regard it as an attempt to weaken their posit ion. Systems were put in place to help eliminate hazards from as early as the design process whilst effectively communicating and cooperating throughout the lifetime of the job. In 2015 details had been updated and changed from the 2007 regulations that will be explored later in this report. Task 1 The Lofstedt report reviews the entirety of the health and safety acts and regulations conducted by Professor Ragnar E Lofstedt to help reduce the burden of health and safety regulations on business whilst conintuing to maintain the standard of health and safety that has developed over the years. The report overall did in fact conclude that there would be no need to make major changes to the current regulations however a couple of amendments could improve the regulations in a business sense as well as for health and safety (Lofstedt, 2011). Lofstedt Report Findings and Suggestions 1. One of the first findings stated in the report was that currently health and safety regulations apply to people self–employed however other countries apply the legislation only to those engaged in activities that are particularly hazardous or carry a risk of injury or harm to others (Lofstedt, 2011). He'd down the first one right at the refrigerator (Gilb 541). Their children, three boys, were seven, four, and almost two (Gilb 541). The man yelled at them too when they continued to be loud after he got home. "Everybody shut up and be quiet!" he yelled. The kids started to get upset and the baby started crying which caused his wife to glare at him. "You know sometimes I wish you were a man cuz I wouldn't let you get away with looks like that. I wouldn't take half the shit I take from you." (Gilb 541). When you read more into the story you realize that the man has just gotten laid off from his previous job and he is scared that the same thing was going to happen with this job. He makes statements like "If he's gonna get me most likely it'll be tomorrow", "There's other jobs", and "All of 'em end no matter what." (Gilb 542). • 19. What Are The Hidden And Indirect Costs Of An Incident? A Health & Safety study was conducted that revealed that hidden and indirect costs of an incident could be 36 times greater than the direct costs of the incident. The full cost of an incident can be split into 2 categories; the visible and insured costs, which are essentially the tip of the iceberg that shows the obvious costs of an accident. Usually the company is insured for these costs. Visible costs could be the employer's liability, public liability or damage to property. Secondly the invisible costs and uninsured costs, these costs are usually harder to quantify but are still there and relevant. It can prove to be very difficult to manage a construction site as projects and sites are short–lived in nature, constantly changing in status, covering a huge range of construction processes of varying complexity and scale. The work processes and people change almost daily on sites, and projects involve diverse groups who are physically separated from the site, i.e. those who procure, design, specify, manage and maintain buildings and structures as well as those who undertake the process of building them. "Soft Causation". Effective health & safety management starts with pre–site planning and development of safe systems of work for any construction project. It is the intention of the CDM regulations to encourage H&S planning throughout the design stage of the project, research into construction accidents has illustrated that a lack of H&S planning is often the underlying cause. With the modern complexity in its built environment, the modern buildings become more sophisticated to be built. In order to build these structures the workers get exposed to many hazards. In modern construction the Health and Safety measures are critical in order to reduce the risk levels and to offer a safe environment for the workers to work upon. Construction work always includes heavy machinery and the handling of hazardous materials, tools and the trade is traditionally plagued with high accident rates. International statistics are no better, and governments around the world have implemented health and safety measures for the protection of the workers. In this report I will describe facts of working at heights and working with excavation and trenches that the company has been reported most of the accidents in the last year. I strongly believe that this will help to build a risk low working space for the workers at our construction sites as we are responsible for our employees. WORKING AT HEIGHTS Work at height means workers may work in a place where he or she will be injured if they fell from the existing level to another level. This could happen above or below ground level. Most of them are reported when they work above ground level. Data from a long–term study indicates the types of falls that are causing workers a serious injury or death. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although the construction industry and several agencies of government have adopted various measures to make job sites safer, construction is still a risky field of work. The number of injuries and deaths in the construction field is large than most of the other fields of work. Hence, it is paramount to understand the reasons behind the construction accidents and to develop strategies in order to avoid accidents and improve safety. There has been a lot of research done to know the causes of injuries and fatalities occurred on the construction site. A lot of jobs are being conducted simultaneously on the construction site and several workers are employed for these jobs. Due to the pressure of completing work on time the work on the construction projects is always fast moving. As a result, safety responsibilities can become less important which increases the chances of accidents. The need to complete work within the specified time draws the attention away from the safety duties which increases the likelihood for hazards to be ignored. In the several researches conducted in the past, several causes have been identified for the accidents that occur on the construct sites which include the involvement of management, workplace, workers, equipment and other construction related factors. • 25. Time and Motion Study * Model for the construction industry using pre–determined times Jasper Van Gilsa, Leo Vaningelgema Abstract This paper is based on our work experience with Office–line. This company prepares standard times for companies in the industrial sector. Standard time is productive time that is required and achieved by an employee. Standard time contains everything that is necessary for the work specified to be completed. The reason why Office–line only prepare standard times for the industrial sector rather than the construction industry is due to the repetitive nature of the work. One example is the car industry which uses assembly lines. In the construction sector, this kind of repetition is not so evident. There is repetitiveness in some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This includes that we have to make a more than one measurement to become a reliable average for these tasks. A second importance that we need to take notice of using chrono, is the performance level at which the employee is working. An execution time of a specific person can not be used as a reference for or employees and as a consequency we can't set these specific times as standards. Tools that can help us by adding a tempo to our measurements are tempo scales. These scales will make sure that execution times will be calibrated and that we become standard times. Standard times can be executed by any valid employee in a social acceptable space of time. Bedaux–scale This tempo scale was designed by the Frenchman Bedaux. He saw that not all employees were working at the same performance level. So he had the idea to add a value from 0 to 100 to the performance levels where 100 stands for the maximum pace which can only be performed for a short period and zero for doing nothing at all. A score of 60 is the level every valid employee should be able to perform for a complete week, 8 hours per day. For his scale, Bedaux compared the working tempo with walking (60) and running (100) that we know starts from a speed of 7,5 km/h. Walking at the speed of 4,5 km/h matches the score of 60 Bedaux–points. Berenschot–scale * For some people the Bedaux–scale was a bit ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 54. Managing Occupational Safety And Health Essay In the United States, construction has always been one of the most dangerous industries to work in. The number of fatalities that occur in this industry year after year demonstrate this. In 2012, 19.6% of worker fatalities, in private industry, were in construction (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2013) despite the industry comprising only 6.8% of the total work force. This epidemic is not unique to the United States. Essentially every country faces similar problems regarding construction safety. For example, in 2004 the Australian construction industry employed approximately 8% of the countries workforce. However, workers compensation statistics indicated that the industry's incidence rate was 28.6 per 1000 employees, nearly twice the overall industry average (Zou, Redman & Windon, 2008). Efforts to improve upon these dismal statistics have intensified in recent years in large part due to the escalation of successful liability suits and the effect the rising cost of workers compensation insurance has on a company's ability to do business. Managing Occupational safety and health in the construction industry is difficult to manage for various reasons. The ever–changing environment, a persistently varying workforce and the various building methods utilized by the industry complicate safety measures. • 60. Cloud Storage For The Field Of Pre Construction Cloud Storage Cloud storage is one of the important application of mobile technology. Cloud storage can be described as a service, which allows you to manage and maintain the data remotely. Cloud storage allows you to save your files online, so that you can access it from anywhere in the world with the help of internet. Additionally, cloud storage syncs the data making sure that all the devices contain the same data. Any project manager knows how difficult it is to have access to current information and many conflicts can be avoided if the same information is available to all the parties in the project. Another important use of cloud storage is in the field of Pre–Construction. For example, Cloud Takeoff is an application which allows the estimators to perform digital takeoffs on any platforms, from windows or Mac or IOS or Android. Since these takeoffs are present in cloud, users can collaborate on the documents using different devices. Cloud Takeoff can do tasks which can previously be performed on programs like Onscreen takeoff. Cloud takeoff helps in preparing more accurate bids than the bids produced by PC based software by increasing collaboration between the parties involved. There are many applications available which provides cloud storage. Some of the examples are Dropbox, Box.net. This above discussion on benefits of using mobile technology in construction industry has covered many benefits of using mobile technology in construction industry. Most of the above ... Visual Detection Of Construction Equipment Emission Visual Detection Of Construction Equipment Emission Yi Liu Abstract Construction industry has great impact in the environment, especially in the pollutant gas emission. Measuring the emission is a vital part for us to take actions in order to enhance the compliance with environmental regulations and achieve the environmental goals. Most of the previous researches only focus on the operation phase of emission instead of the construction phase. But the fact is that more than 50% of the emissions come from the construction site equipment. In this paper, a new method has been presented to help solve the problem by visual monitoring the equipment activity and calculating the total emission based on the emission factor. In order to realize ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that more than 50% emissions have been generated from the construction equipment that has been neglected. In order to calculate the total emission of the construction phase, equipment classification will be very helpful. However, the traditional method of classifying the action is time consuming[1] and is prone to the human error. In order to improve the productivity and enhance the accuracy of this practice, a new method in visual monitoring of equipment activity can be adopted. After that, the total emission can be the multiplier of the emission factor and activity duration. In this paper, the first section will be the overview of the industry and related previous work. Next, the possible solution will be presented including the feature localization and recognition. It is also accompanied with the experiment test of the algorithm. After that, the emission factor of different equipment activity will be gathered and presented. The potential benefits and limitation of the method will be discussed afterwards. Conclusion and future development will be in the last section. 2. Background and related work 2.1 Equipment recognition and tracking Many construction companies are still using the tradition ways, including the crew balance chart, the five minutes rating and etc., to observe the site productivity[12]. • 73. The Construction Industry Has Incurred Losses From Meager... The construction industry has incurred losses from meager productivity as compared to other industries (Choi et al. 2013). Productivity can be defined as the relative measure of labor efficiency in dollar value (Choi et al. 2013). Construction managers require prompt and instantaneous access to blueprints, CAD drawings, budgets, schedules and purchase orders. Moreover, many of these documents are requisite to be perpetuated for several years, due to security and legal concerns. As the industry grows, its offices eventually stagger beneath the heavy load of paper. A paperless work environment, along with mobile technology, offers numerous opportunities to level the paper mountain and increase the productivity of construction processes (Moore 2009). Many construction leaders promote paperless work environments to increase productivity by automating tasks and exhilarating collaboration (Bowden et al 2006). Anterior research conducted by the Construction Industry Institute (CII) concludes that access to information on construction site begets more productivity in the working environment (Mills and Chen 2008). This serves as a foreground in identifying paperless mobile computing solutions capable of meeting construction industry requirements. Historically, research on the use of Mobile IT applications in construction started in mid–nineties when the apple newton message pad was being introduced. • 75. Essay Implementing Safe Design in Construction Introduction In the United States, construction has always been one of the most dangerous industries to work in. The number of fatalities that occur in this industry year after year demonstrate this. In 2014, 19.6% of worker fatalities, in private industry, were in construction (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015) despite the industry comprising only 6.8% of the total work force. This epidemic is not unique to the United States. Essentially every country faces similar problems regarding construction safety. For example, in 2004 the Australian construction industry employed approximately 8% of the countries workforce. However, workers compensation statistics indicated that the industry's incidence rate was 28.6 per 1000 employees, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Safe design is the process of identifying, assessing, and eliminating hazards or potential risks that may occur in the workplace during construction or the life cycle of a designed product (Breslin, 2007). Designers have not traditionally addressed safety in their design and are often unaware of how their design impacts safety, yet research has shown that in construction project management, many safety risks may be eliminated or mitigated and opportunities seized at the design stage if proper analysis and assessment is carried out (Zou et al, 2008). Countries around the world have realized this to be true and numerous countries have passed regulation placing some of the safety burden on designers. This paper reviews the literature on the design and implementation of safe design techniques and programs in the construction industry. Why safe design? Many times, risks faced by contractors exist at no fault of their own. That is, in some cases the contractor is bound by a design that places specific hazards on the construction site. Designers who are cognizant of and responsive to their effort on construction safety would aid in making jobsites safer for construction workers (Gambatese et al, 1997). Situations such as these led the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to create a safe design concept, prevention through design. Prevention ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
