WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
 World Environment Day is celebrated annually
on 5 June
 First held in 1974
 Celebrated for encouraging awareness
for protection of the environment and
awareness on environmental issues such
as marine pollution,
human overpopulation, global
warming, sustainable consumption and wildlife
crime for a healthy and better future.
 It is a global platform with participation from
over 143 countries annually.
 This year’s theme is "Ecosystem Restoration“
and the global host of this campaign is Pakistan.
ENVIRONMENT
 Environment means anything that surround
us.
 It can be living (biotic) like animals, plants,
microorganisms or non-living (abiotic) things
like air, water, sunlight etc.
 In the environment there are different
interactions
between animals, plants, soil, water and
other living and non-living things.
 In biology and ecology, the environment is all of
the natural materials and living things
 An example of interactions between non-living
and living things is plants getting their minerals
from the soil and making food using sunlight.
Predation, an organism eating another, is an
example of interaction between living things.
 Natural resources like fish, insects, and forests
are renewable resources because they come
back naturally when we use them.
 Non-renewable resources are important things
in the environment that are limited for example, ,
ores and fossil fuels like coal, petroleum
WATER
WATER RESERVIORS
 Oceans
 Rivers
 Lakes
 Ponds
HUMAN IMPACT ON WATER
 Dams
 Stream channelization
 Urbanization
 Deforestation
FOOD CHAIN WILL BREAK DUE TO DEFORESTATION
HUMAN IMPACT ON AIR
 Atmosphere
 Climate
 Weather
 Air consists of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen,
1% argon and other inert gases and carbon dioxide
 The atmosphere includes greenhouse gases such as
carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide
 The ozone layer of the Earth's atmosphere plays an
important role in reducing the amount
of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that reaches the surface.
GLOBAL WARMING
 Climate change i.e
temperature, humidity, atmospheric
pressure, wind, rainfall, atmospheric particle
count and global warming caused by human-
made releases of greenhouse gases most
notably carbon dioxide
 It is clear the planet is warming and warming
rapidly. This is due to the greenhouse effect,
which is caused by greenhouse gases, which
trap heat inside the Earth's atmosphere
BIOCHEMICAL CYCLES
 Water cycle
 Oxygen cycle
 Carbon cycle
 Nitrogen cycle
Pollution, green house effect and global warming effected
above cycles largely and contineously effecting.
OXYGEN CYCLE
CHALLENGES
 Elimination of pollution and toxicants in air,
water, soil
 Preservation of biodiversity and protection
of endangered species.
 Conservation of resources such as water, land,
air, energy and natural resources.
 Halting human-induced global warming, which
represents pollution, a threat to biodiversity, and
a threat to human populations.
 Shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy in
electricity, heating and cooling, and
transportation, which addresses pollution, global
warming
CHALLENGES
 Shifting from meat-intensive diets to largely plant-
based diets in order to help mitigate biodiversity loss
 Establishment of nature reserves for recreational
purposes and ecosystem preservation.
 Sustainable and less polluting waste
management including waste reduction (or even zero
waste), reuse, recycling, composting and anaerobic
digestion of sewage sludge.
 Reducing profligate consumption and clamping down
on illegal fishing and logging.
 Slowing and stabilisation of human population
growth.
