This Is Water Analysis
There is no arguing that death is inevitable and inescapable. The repetition of life has created a
human race that fades in and fades out, and everything that the individual obtains, tangible and
intangible, disappears with us. By referencing pieces such as Stephen Crane's A Man Said to the
Universe, Borges's The Art of Poetry, The Society of the Spectacle by Guy DeBord, David Foster
Wallace's This is Water, and other outside authors, I will demonstrate that through art and basic
principles of human interaction, we eventually become obsolete. If we believe that this is true, it is
likely that we are living a life knowingly or unknowingly based on the philosophy of existentialism.
The philosophy of existentialism extends far beyond a ten page ... Show more content on

He expressed the idea in which society needs reasoning to get by each day when really there are no
absolutes in life and only definitions which are given to things. He claims in the lecture that, "we're
a little bit of eternity sticking into three–dimensional space and, for some reason, occupying time in
a monkey body." The idea that there are no absolutes in life is somewhat accurate, however, he
McKenna forgot one absolute––death. One of the key pillars of existentialism is the idea that the
past and future do not exist. In the A Universe Inside You, McKenna states that "...When you turn
your eyes inward you discover the birth right. The existential facts out of which this particular
existence emerged. And it's a great secret. A great secret and a great comfort. Because it means
mystery didn't die with the fall of Arthur or the fall of Atlantis or the fall of anything. Mystery is
alive in the moment, in the here and now." McKenna understands that people are living in the
moment, however searching in the future for a meaning in life is a waste of

Essay about Naturalism in The House of Mirth
Naturalism in The House of Mirth
Challenging the strict deterministic confines of literary naturalism, which hold that "the human
being is merely one phenomenon in a universe of material phenomena" (Gerard 418), Edith
Wharton creates in The House of Mirth a novel which irrefutably presents the human creature as
being subject to a naturalistic fate but which conveys a looming sense of hope that one may triumph
over environment and circumstance if one possesses a certain strength of will or a simple faith in
human possibility.
Because of Wharton's slight deviation from naturalistic conventions, a literary debate exists among
critics as to the validity of viewing The House of Mirth as a novel which embodies ... Show more

Making this theme uniquely hers, however, is Wharton's creation of two characters who are
"exceptions to the seemingly ubiquitous law of social determinism" (Gerard 410). These characters,
Nettie Struther and Lawrence Selden, one triumphing over her environment through sheer will, the
other transcending it through faith in human possibility, create a small tear in the formidable fabric
of strict naturalism, thus engendering a hope for the triumph of the human spirit.
Edith Wharton develops Lady Bart as a character who is a product of her environment, preyed upon
by circumstance and fate. Lily's name, referring to a highly ornamental flower, immediately creates
the image of a delicate creature who is grown in the rich soils of society and who, if uprooted from
this societal soil, would wither and perish. Lily, as any living organism, is not simply a static figure
in her environment. Instead, she is a true naturalistic character, responsive and subject to the
conditions of her surroundings. For example, when Lily and Selden meet at Bellomont, "Lily's
beauty expanded like a flower in sunlight" (108) and, "her face turned toward him with the soft
motion of a flower" (109). Thus, although it can be argued that Lily is not a naturalistic character
because of Wharton's emphasis on

The Report On The Amazon Basin
In the Amazon Basin, an amazing plant called Ayahuasca, which is an entheogenic brew made out of
Banisteriopsis caapi vine, and often in combination with various other plants. The word
"Ayahuasca", from the Quechua language, means "vine of the souls". [1] For centuries, Amazonian
shamans have used Ayahuasca as a window into the soul. The main reason it can change human
brain and consciousness is that the plant contains a substance called DMT. N,N–dimethyltryptamine
(DMT) is an illegal, psychedelic tryptamine compound found in the human body and at least 60
species of plants worldwide. [2] Rick Strassman described it as "the first endogenous human
psychedelic" in his book DMT: The Spirit Molecule. [3] And in an interview in 2011, he said ...

McKenna (who, "more than anyone," Dr. Strassman wrote in 2000, "has raised awareness of DMT,
through lectures, books, interviews, and recordings, to its present unprecedented level") [3] called
DMT "the most powerful hallucinogen known to man and science" and "the commonest
hallucinogen in all of nature" in his 1994 lecture "Rap Dancing Into the Third Millennium." [6]
McKenna wondered why theology had not enshrined DMT as "its central exhibit for the presence of
the other in the human world," and said in an interview in The Archaic Revival (1992): "It was
really the DMT that empowered my commitment to the psychedelic experience. DMT was so much
more powerful, so much more alien, raising all kinds of issues about what is reality, what is
language, what is the self, what is three–dimensional space and time." [5] Besides, Stephen Szara
had also reported hallucinations of strange creatures in his article Dimethyltryptamine Experiments
with Psychotics. He described how one of his subjects under the influence of DMT had experienced
"strange creatures, dwarves or something" at the beginning of a DMT trip. [7][8] Other researchers
of the experience described 'entities ' or 'beings ' in humanoid as well as animal form, with
descriptions of "little people" being common. This form of hallucination has been speculated to be
the cause of alien abduction experiences through endogenously occurring DMT. [9]
From the review of Dr. Strassman's research from 1955 to 2010, it says that

The Effects Of Loneliness And Its Effects On Society Essay
Did you know the physical effects of loneliness are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day? Or
that loneliness raises your chance of death by 26%. Throughout history we've known loneliness is
harmful. Emily Dickenson called loneliness, "The horror not to be surveyed." In the beginning of
the Bible, it says, "It is not good for the man to be alone." And yet, in our western society we
constantly seek after individualism. Our society glorifies going it alone. In a survey done by the
PEW research center, parents ranked independence as more important that empathy, tolerance, and
persistence. The drive to go it alone is deeply rooted in our culture and we're seeing the effects of
what we've sown. Mental illness is on the rise. One in four women between 16 and 24 have harmed
themselves, another 26% of these women are also affected by anxiety, depression, phobias or OCD.
Depression and loneliness are at an all–time high. In the Facebook era we seem to have forgotten the
value of community. Loneliness is especially dangerous for leaders. In The Prince, the world
Machiavelli lays out for a leader is a lonely one. His "better to be feared than loved" principle is an
idea that stifles community and isolates a leader. The story of Esther, however, proposes a different
view of leadership, one in which community is of high value. While Esther's courage was heroic, it
would not have been possible without the support of her community, specifically Mortdecai.

The Significance of Lily Bart's Death (House of Mirth)
Assignment one – Discuss the significance of Lily Bart's death at the end of The House of Mirth.
You should consider the implications both for the protagonist's social milieu and for women in
general at this point in American history. The significance of Lily Bart's death. As a writer looking
towards the twentieth century Wharton faced the challenge of telling the history of women past the
age of thirty. The age of thirty was established as the threshold by nineteenth–century conventions.
The conventions of 'girlhood' and marriage ability; a psychological observation about the formation
of the female identity. Wharton shared Freud's pessimism about the difficulties of change for
women. In his essay 'femininity', ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She cannot fully possess herself – could this be the meaning behind the word that is left unsaid?
Could the word she wanted to tell Selden be 'freedom'? Earlier in the novel when walking with
Selden in the park, Lily listens as he defines what 'success' means for him, 'My idea of success,...is
personal freedom...from everything – from money, from poverty...from all the material accidents'
(p.60). It appears that both Lily and Selden were too late in realising that it was in fact this freedom
they both desired. The withholding of the word ultimately denies the reader access to Lily's dying
thoughts. However, it is this switch from omniscient narration to free indirect discourse that allows
the reader to fill this "textual space". Wharton manages to position the novel as psychological
realism bordering on modernism. 7 Lily is repeatedly defeated. The aunt who should be there to
rescue her disinherits her; her friend Bertha Dorset should be there for her, yet she throws her out in
order to protect her own reputation; the man who should have faith in her, cannot trust her long
enough to overcome his own emotional meticulousness. We see Lily being taken from the heights to
her death in an unrelenting fall.8 Lily realises that her status as a lady does not exempt her from the

Psychedelic Mushrooms Essay
For most people, when the phrase psychedelic mushroom is thrown out, the first thing that comes to
mind is hallucination. Some people think of LSD or the 60s, others may think more specifically to
personal experiences they have had with the drug. Some may have used them recreationally as a
teen, some may have had a single awful experience with them, or some may totally resent the idea
of psychedelic mushrooms. No matter what someone may think of them, there is not a stranger
thought process than Terence McKenna's. When psychedelic mushrooms are brought up around
him, there are much stranger things than a memory of seeing God or a condescending idea of
recreational fun going through his mind. McKenna's thought process is best explained in his ...

The more reproduction going on within a species, especially during an intense change in habit, the
more chance of changes amongst the species itself. Also, the fact that only the mushroom
consuming apes had a spike in arousal, this means the mushroom consuming apes are bound to
outbreed the non–consumers. In other words, if the new generations are the ones adapting and
surviving to the environmental change, it only makes sense that the older and less adaptive
generations, which are not reproducing as much, are going to die off (MckennaCountrCulture). In
Charles Darwin's famous book "The Origin of Species," Darwin explains that evolution happens
with a benefitting change in behavior inside of a species. With this advantageous change, the
offspring will grow with this change and, over time, these offspring will thrive and survive much
longer than the other species. To further explain, Darwin illustrates a story about a wolf. In this
story, the wolf learns more efficient ways to prey on certain animals and how to hunt certain
animals. While this wolf is learning, he is breeding. While he is breeding, his offspring are learning
to behave like him (Darwin

Why Charles Johnson Is Not An Indefatigable Investigator,...
You WOULD NOT want Charles Johnson to look into your background, not if you had anything to
hide. He is an indefatigable investigator, who, at the campus conservative magazine, the Claremont
Independent – and at his own rollicking blog –for four years kept Claremont McKenna College
buzzing with revelations about affirmative action, politically tendentious speakers, and abuses in
student government. He held college administrators ' feet to the fire, and they got singed. It was
easier to condemn than to refute him, and his critics soon gave up on the latter. Outside CMC, more
disinterested judges quickly discovered the boldness of his reporting and commentary. Soon he had
been awarded virtually every prize a young journalist of conservative disposition could receive: the
Robert L. Bartley Fellowship at the Wall Street Journal, the Eric Breindel Award, the Robert Novak
Award from the Phillips Foundation, and a Publius Fellowship at the Claremont Institute. Hitting the
trifecta is hard, but what Charles achieved is so remarkable as to be nameless: hitting – what, the
quadrifecta?
While leading his very public life as a student journalist, Charles pursued, more quietly but just as
intrepidly, the study of politics. His senior thesis, a precocious work of political biography, became
the starting point for the book (his first) you are now reading. Why Coolidge Matters marks the
appearance of a major new conservative talent – and the reappearance of a major old one.

Comparison And Contrast Essay
Racism for the most part has been a global issue in different countries. I believe that the
characteristics of being racial is feeling as if your racial group has the power of being superior to
others. Just like racism, discrimination to others have been used as powerful weapons stimulating
fear and hatred of others. This is usually used to peoples advantage. The next three articles I choose
to compare and contrast are "When the college Madness Came to My Campus" by Charles R.
Kesler, "Blacklash Develops To Campus Protests" by Melissa Korn and Douglas Belkin and "Black

Kesler, an administrator who is giving a synopsis about the protests that occurred in the college he
teaches, is trying to conserve the colleges values as well as their political beliefs, while students are
trying to defend their rights. According to the article, in the late 40's Claremont McKenna college
was a college that focused their curriculum on politics and economics p.2. Even though the college
now practices both a liberal and conservative concept, I speculate that the author is trying to
convince its audience of his believe of keeping their reputation conservative. "Today's students don't
have free speech high on their agenda, to put it mildly" p.3. Students outburst and started a political
correctness on campus mostly by minority students in an effort of keeping any speech that might be
malicious or disrespectful in loquacity. "A coalition of self–proclaimed marginalized students
presented a catalog of microaggressions they had suffered, demanding new forms of institutional
support in compensation" p.2. The protest was intended to be for resolving differences, and quickly
became a convenience for people identified as "victims" to complain about their cause of pain and
suffering. Students at McKenna College wanted their voices to be heard, some of the protest they
used was going on hunger strikes and profanity, they also demanded administration to take them
more into consideration when it came to their rights and to be given equal opportunities regardless
of their preferences. The college is clearly suffering from being diverse among its students and that's
why students are fighting for a change. "That afternoon, President Chodosh replied with his own
memo, announcing steps to satisfy the protesters, including two additional administrative positions
on diversity and inclusion; a safe space to support new programming on the campus climate; pro–
active measures to increase diversity in

Robin do his crazy performances. She never got tired of his jokes and performances. Williams grew

Williams as being a disruptive child. Miss Granice was so fed up with his distraction, like making
strange sounds while everyone was doing school work, she kept moving William's desk farther away
from the others until finally he was put into the hall. Williams´ isolation made him shy and unsocial;

In 1958, Albert Hoffman, the famous scientist to first isolate lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD,

Psychedelic Drug Use Essay
Psychedelic drug use has been present in both traditions and used recreationally for millennia. Their
use can be seen in all corners of the planet by many sects of religions and indigenous peoples.
Reasons for usage vary from religious or medical purposes, hunting, war, and spirituality. The drug
use was viewed with much less of a negative stigma than it is today.
It wasn't until recently that the government cracked down on the use of psychedelic drugs. They
placed many of the drugs into schedules in which the legality of the drug was assigned. Most of the
drugs can be found on the list of schedule one substances. Schedule one drugs are drugs that have a
high potential for abuse, has no currently accepted medical use, and has a lack of accepted safety
under medical supervision. So why is it that these natural substances used for millennia are just
becoming stigmatised and controlled? According to american ethnobotanist, Terence Kemp

Cyber Crime Id Theft And Credit Fraud
It is 2012, and Information Technology (IT) is revolutionising society, culture, communication and
general Multimedia (MM) in a new fashion. This new fashion is no longer constricted to one
continent; it is global. Nor is it constricted to one construct; technology converges ever more rapidly.
According to Moore's law; the doubling of transistors on integrated circuits (ISSCC, 2003) it
expects more powerful information technology, and also expect technologies to continue their
concrescence to new more powerful appliances with new features. Since the new
technologies/features are on the increase via "accelerating returns" (Kurzweil, 2001), there is a
concern within this essay and an ever increasing global population in the context of privacy, laws
and ethical considerations.

In today's busy technocratic world, the context of privacy in the face of new cyber technologies is

Lily's Choice in The House of Mirth
Near the beginning of The House of Mirth, Wharton establishes that Lily would not indeed have
cared to marry a man who was merely rich: "she was secretly ashamed of her mothers crude passion
for money" (38). Lily, like the affluent world she loves, has a strange relationship with money. She
needs money to buy the type of life she has been raised to live, and her relative poverty makes her
situation precarious. Unfortunately, Lily has not been trained to obtain money through a wide

Lily Bart has to die because she is completely incapable of adapting to this world of direct
transactions, and in the end the only two paths she sees both lie firmly in that realm.
First, a distinction must be made between direct and indirect transaction. Lily can happily live in a
world where wealth circulates obliquely and freely. When Lily stays as a guest at Bellomont eating
fine food at her hosts expense, she is not receiving payment for goods or services. Instead, her
charm has earned her the benefits of friendship with the rich. Lily is not exactly being paid to be
charming; instead, being charming attracts the generous hospitality and entertainment of wealthy
friends. The distinction between this type of benefit and direct compensation is enormous. When the
reader encounters Lily in Chapter Ten of Book Two, Lily has fled from the world of Norma Hatch to
the milliners shop––and it was an offer of direct reward that made it necessary for Lily to escape.
Wharton writes, "The sense of being involved in a transaction she would not have cared to examine
too closely had soon afterward defined itself in the light of a hint from Mr. Stancy that if she saw
them through, she would have no reason to be sorry" (293–3). Lily has no qualms about living as a
guest of her rich friends, but the idea of selling her charm and becoming a sort of social mercenary
holds no appeal for her: "The implication that such loyalty would meet with a direct

One example of where Catherine manages to display her understanding of her future life is towards

that the next time he sees her, she won't be up in the gallery with the rest of the audience. Instead she
says that she is going to be across the floor, hinting that Catherine has ambitions towards being a
lawyer or having another role in court. She shows this by the way she tries to learn crucial tricks and
terminology that is imperative to the court. This is also something that Rattigan hints often towards
throughout the play. Rattigan writes in such a way that doesn't say straight out how Catherine
feels/thinks, but instead he formulates it to show her confidence and leave the audience pondering of
what exactly Catherine meant. He tries also to reveal Catherine in a way where she shows a
fundamental interest towards the justice

Analysis Of A Quiet Passion By Terence Davies
I think if you're at the least an English major or minor in college, as I was, you're bound to come
across the poetry of Emily Dickinson in a class or two. Her work is profound and terribly moving, as
words flow out in such a way that you can feel the depths of feeling stretching through a nervous
system that may have only just been wracked by fits and that the questioning of what GOD is or
what LIFE and DEATH are have no choice but to be sussed out. There are also love poems too, or at
least poems sorting out what those feelings might amount to, or what it means to be at the foot of the
stairs looking at someone and not being able to, or feeling like, or whatever, going down. There's a
lot of the pain, but also the joy and reverie, in connection or those possibilities in her work.
The question then for Terence Davies is: what about the woman? There is some joy here, or even
small chirpings of humor in that reserved 19th century comedy–of–manners way at times in the first
two–thirds... and then the last third is among the saddest things I've seen unfold in a very long time.
What makes A Quiet Passion convincing is that Davies and his crew and cast commit to it all, and
his style is one of patience with his compositions and movements of the frame – let's take a little
time moving across faces, for example, listening to a piece of music, or let's make sure we don't too
much when we can see the sum total of emotions an actor is expressing in listening (or, as a

Clutching my bag, I made my way to the candy stand. Eery music drifted around us, while my eyes

thirty feet from the entrance. At either side of the path there were rows of lights revealing the still
ethos of skinny trees. "Did you guys hear something?" Shivani stammered.
We stopped and listened. Nothing.

' Mark My Words, Maybe, By Leslie Jamison
As a newly 18 year old, there are two tattoos on my body. One symbolizes the dirt that one collects
while being blown in the direction of a future. The other is a direct link to a faith. It points to a firm
stance on a belief. Are there any regrets? Absolutely not. Tattoos are very captivating and alluring.
They provoke conversation which causes a piece of a story to be left with each and every person
encountered. Tattoos also allow a person to feel that they are themselves. Meaning that they feel that
their body has individuality. Is the right tattoo ever really something that a person wants? Yes
because it leaves a gesture hope and, it shows your intimacy.
In the essay by Leslie Jamison, "Mark My Words, Maybe" She communicates to her audience about
getting this tattoo to represent a new era for her after an emotional breakup. The tattoo being "homo
sum: humani nil a me alienum puto" or in English translation, "I am human: nothing human is alien
to me." Jamison talks about how she felt as deserving as any other for the pain that she has felt
during the relationship. As the essay reads on, Jamison deals with the conflict of interest from others
based on the meaning of her tattoo. She also goes about her thought process for finding the true
meaning of her tattoo.
Uniquely, Jamison's tattoo leaves a gesture of hope. "I was branding myself to mark a new era: my
body was no longer entwined with someone else's" (Jamison page ##) In saying this she inscribes

Reasons For Motivation
Prompt: The Doctoral Program is interested in your reasons for pursuing doctoral studies. Please
describe them in an essay ranging from 500–700 words. Include the major field area to which you
are applying (Accounting; Decision, Risk and Operations; Finance and Economics; Management; or
Marketing).
My journey pursuing a PhD in finance and economics has hardly been straightforward: Although I
started my undergraduate education as a film major, I quickly came to appreciate the analytical rigor
found within the discipline. While a film major focuses on artistic storytelling, I developed a
preference for the stories you can tell through a study of economics. While both are undoubtedly
creative, my interest pivoted to this education in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My curiosity drives me in the classroom as well. Not only have I demonstrated success by
graduating with both departmental and school–wide honors studying economics, but I also
supplemented this education with substantive mathematical coursework through Real Analysis and
Differential Equations. Despite the obvious dichotomy between math and the original film major, I
have been most successful in my math classes, exhibiting a perfect record despite the rigor.
However, the real rewards from these courses are illustrated by my comfort and mastery economic
topics that four years ago would have challenged me.
By maturing as both an academic and researcher, I am now able to tackle more intricate topics and
teach them to others. While at Claremont McKenna College, I wrote an honors economics thesis
using Regression Discontinuity Design to analyze incumbency advantage in State Legislatures
around the United States. Additionally, I taught fellow student both at the beginning of their
economic careers as a recitation lecturer at in a 50–person economics lecture, and at the end, by
tutoring seniors in STATA and Econometrics during their theses. Ultimately, I am interested in the
finance and economics because I am primarily interested in the relationship between an economy
and its people. The advantage of this program against that of a purely traditional economics degree
is that it incorporates the financial sector that pervades through every industry. I learned this first

Analysis Of Television Shows And Peaky Blinders
It is often said that there are two sides to every story. "Peaky Blinders" and "Boardwalk Empire" are
the perfect example of this as they tell essentially the same story through very different lenses.
These two iconic television series tackle the subject of society post World War I, and a soldier's
place in it. Though the details often vary between the two, they share the same core characteristics.
Both are post–war crime dramas, centered around a strong, dignified character, where both are
leaders of his own respective criminal organization. Additionally, both shows are set in the Roaring
Twenties, a time full of reform and evolution. This inherently meant the show would have to address
the social issues during this time–period or lose some sense of credibility. "Peaky Blinders" does a
fantastic job of this by making these social problems a recurring theme in the show. "Boardwalk
Empire", while much subtler in the way it handles social problems, is equally successful.
Because of this, each of these dramas could also be considered a series on social issues post WWI.
Intriguing, engaging, riveting, these descriptions could describe either of these shows; alternatively,
so could slow, tedious, and meticulous. The creators of both set out to create an entertaining,
compelling, and accurate, if sometimes exaggerated and dramatized, series. Both shows were
successful, because the creators were able to take full advantage of the extended production and
screen time that

Globalisation And Globalization
Globalisation can have a variety of different meanings and one that accurately summarises these is
"is the integration of economies, industries, markets, cultures and policy–making around the world"
(Financial Times). This integration has been viewed by many as a largely positive thing for
humanity as a whole however, others have been critical of globalisation, for example, due to the
growth of influence certain parts of the world have over the rest of the world. There are many
discussions to be had on this, although it is critical that focus is drawn to how people in various
cultures are affected by globalisation. An important aspect of globalisation is the cultural influence
of not only the West, but specifically of America's place in our globalised world. In academic
philosophy, America has become a dominant force in the other cultures. This can be seen even in
European cultures, where Shusterman (2000) observed American thinkers being sought after to
make appearances at cultural events as well as guest speakers. This is due to a contrast between new
American ways of thinking compared to ideologies that dominate discussion in European
philosophical discussion. This has the potential to be great of course, we should be seeking to look
to other cultures to break away from limiting ourselves strictly to our cultural point of view. We
inherit culture and language and this shapes our point of view to a significant degree; we view the
world through a distorted lens

Gothic Horror : Frankenstein And Dracula
It's strange trying to think about these original film properties–Frankenstein and Dracula,
respectively–as serious pictures, void of camp and cheese. However, most of this comes from age.
It's interesting then, watching the Hammond–era films, and trying to view them as anything
remotely serious. They aren't. However, they do, at times, manage to disguise themselves as such. In
reality, these movies are no Rosemary's Baby, but rather the birth of a new brand of gothic horror–
the gore filled, B–movie, spin–off franchise films; a weird series of twisted exploitation reboots,
upping the ante and upping the ridiculous names. The two things that immediately came to mind
when watching these films is the obvious influence they had on the work of Mexican director
Guillermo Del Toro, and Kate Bush's song "Hammer Horror" – I admire both artists greatly, so I
went in the Hammerverse with my eyes wide open. In regards to the evolution Terence Fischer took
the genre into, it could be said that grabbed horror by the haunches and pulled into a new, appalling
era. Author Sinclair McKay, writing for The Telegraph, describes the reception for the early
Hammer films, "Indeed, when the Hammer Horrors first appeared with The Curse of Frankenstein in
1957 the critics rose up like a torch–bearing mob, horrified by the (minimal) shots of blood. The
word "Hammer" became synonymous with the shocking limit of cinematic nastiness." Taking that
into consideration, one could surmise that, while quite

conflict is clearly brought out, while human use technology to ensure rule over animals, dinosaurs

Role of science and technology in the current world is a theme that has come out vividly in the
novel. Dinosaurs brought back to live? 'Creatures beyond wildest imagination resurrected from
dead', cloning achieved by genetically engineering DNA salvaged from mosquitoes that fed on
mosquitoes. It is only through technology that Hammond has succeeded in bringing back extinct
dinosaurs; technology is used to guard the fierce animals and to control the park. Trouble in paradise

Michael Crichton managed to use dinosaurs and Jurassic Park to reflect on contemporary world –
Humans and their environment. In the park, we are treated to powerful and epic, dinosaurs portrayed

The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton
The House of Mirth is a novel that condemns the elitist world of women and promotes the idea that
money can't buy happiness. Wharton wanted to present American aristocracy when that aristocracy
was doing so well. The novel highlights each aspect of a person's social behavior because each

Psychoactive Drugs And Its Effects On Human Consciousness
A psychoactive drug is any substance that can be used to change brain function. This resulting
change is responsible for alterations in perception, mood, and consciousness. As long as man has
had a basic grasp on understanding consciousness they have tried delving deeper and deeper into
their own consciousness and not only grown a larger respect for just how deep they can go but have
had experiences that have encouraged them to go deeper. Rock paintings and fossil finds from as far
back as 10,000 years ago offer scientific evidence and proof of the extremely long and exciting
history of psychedelic drugs. Unfortunately it wouldn't be until the 20th century that we would
actually start to understand just how valuable and versatile these substances truly would be. From
religious and spiritual uses to medicinal and more, psychoactive drugs, particularly ones more in the
realm of psychedelics, are more important to learning and understanding our own consciousness
than we can even understand.
Terence McKenna, an American philosopher who focused on the nature of consciousness and the
relationship between consciousness and psychedelic drugs, was a firm believer that the nature of
consciousness and the evolution of man was all owed to the incorporation of psychedelic
mushrooms into the early mans diet. He believes that the psychedelics in their diet are what
promoted self–realization and eventually prompted our earliest ancestors to develop language.

brilliantly by writer and director Stephan Elliot. Tick/Mitzi and Adam/Felicia are two drag queens
that travel across Australia on a lavender bus with there transsexual friend Ralph/Bernadette. All
three challenge the dominant stereotype of the Australian male. Released in 1994, 14 years into the
AIDS epidemic, the film had a phenomenal response around the world and in Australia.

Mitzi presents another view of gay men. 'She' is more embarrassed about being a drag queen,
especially in front of 'her' son stating "Sorry about last night. I don't always dress up in women's
clothes. I mean don't get the wrong idea. I do lots of different stuff......... You know, like Elvis and
Garry Glitter and......." Although in the end 'she' loosens up when 'she' realizes that 'her' son accepts
'her' for whom she is. Mitzi.
Bob contrasts with the gay characters. He represents a gender binary of masculinity. Bob is an open–
minded mechanic that takes a liking to Bernadette. Bob travels with the three on their journey after
Priscilla brakes down. He was married to a mail–order wife, a Filipino prostitute that left him during
the movie stating that he wasn't a good husband.
During the trip the three main characters stop off in Coober Pedy, a small tough town. Bob goes to
the local pub to drink with his mates but Felicia comes along too, dressed as a women. The men at
the pub react violently. This is a stereotype about Australian men that are confronted with different
types of masculinity.
"The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" is important to Australian culture not only for a
great laugh but because it teaches people that there are many different types of Australian men and
to embrace our diversity. Elliot used the AIDS epidemic as inspiration for this movie and did a very

The Continuum Model: The Mysteries Of Perception
Abstract
The continuum model proposed by Fiske and Neuberg in 1999 explains how people can use
different impression formation processes to categorize new acquaintances in different social
environments. These being category–based processing, which might be even seen as primitive and
innate from the human consciousness, we can slowly move towards a more piecemeal data–based
processing as our motivation and relative importance is increased. Otherwise we stand in an almost
superficial stereotypical assumption of human perception. Keywords: Continuum model, social
cognition, perception, attitudes, behavior, psychedelics, entheogens.

Perception can greatly vary from person to person. The way a person perceives a new acquaintance
is mostly going to be very different than the next one. Many factors play a role in making this
statement true. Race, religion, culture, country of origin, and most importantly, the level of
education will have an immediate effect on how we perceive not only people but the world in
general this way of processing information about other people and social situations is also referred
to as social cognition.
Perception might be relative because the way the world is perceived for a person suffering from
Autism Spectrum disorder will be completely different than how a person with down syndrome
perceive the world, and a person who does not suffer from any of these disorders will obviously
have a different view of the world which will be more in coincidence with the perception of the
general population of an specific place. The same goes for people who take certain drugs, for
example, people who take Lysergic Acid Diethylamide or LSD will have a completely different way
of perceiving the world than someone who has not taken anything or even compared to himself
sober, his or her way of perceiving the world will be affected for the next 8 to 12 hours. This also
differs from person to person and from drug to drug. I have to emphasize the fact that drugs that

The Working Class In Edith Wharton's The House Of Mirth
challenging or overcoming the marketplace is not even possible: she approaches the topic from an
aristocratic perspective, which offers no alternative to the standard of a business–centered society.
Para. 28: Wharton nevertheless tries to overcome this impossibility by exploring it through the
working class. The character of Nettie, for instance, is representative of being outside the exchange
system, and therefore able to "transcend" the exchange system.
Para. 29: Placing her hope for change within her idealized vision of the working class, Wharton
seeks to find an exit from the confines of the marketplace mentality. Dimock's final argument, then,
is that the House of Mirth is Wharton's critique of a system that places arbitrary values on human
experiences for the sake of short–term capital gain.
In "Debasing Exchange: Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth," Wai–Chee Dimock seeks to prove
how The House of Mirth acts as an illuminating critique of the society in which it is set, namely how
and why social interactions are defined by an all pervasive system of exchange that ultimately
defines all other aspects of the characters' lives. She establishes intellectual territory in her analysis
by reading closely into the myriad of relationships between the characters in the novel, attending to
how their dialogue and actions are steeped in the language of business. Dimock's reasoning for The

Born Free Themes
In the movie Born Free, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers play conservationists Joy and George
Adamson, who become the surrogate parents of three lion cubs, later giving two to a zoo and
keeping Elsa, the smallest of the bunch. As their time with the lioness continues, they are given
orders to return her to the wild, where they realize they must return her to her roots among the
African Savannah, touching on the theme of nature and the true meaning of freedom. Elsa's legacy
within this film is her role as an ambassador–like role in being a bridge between mankind and nature
in helping understand the limit in humanity's ability to survive alongside the wild.
Like humans, animals are capable of emotion. Many people fear creatures like Elsa because they are
mainly known for their instinctual and predatorial nature. In the film, John Kendall, George's boss
and presumably experienced in wildlife like lions, is fearful of Elsa despite her easygoing and merry
attitude with the Adamsons. His position somewhat makes this ironic, as one would not normally
fear what they are trying to protect and take care of. Elsa portrays a wide range of emotions that
people would usually think she would be unable to comprehend. Elsa expresses sorrow when Joy
leaves for town and as she waits for her to come back home, and then elation in Joy's return. Lions
and most animals have different ways of communicating their needs and emotions. Humans tend to

truly demonstrates how Holden does not to be included with the others, being the student body of

A prominent opinion during the aftermath of the Los Angeles Summer of Love was that speed killed

reason it was shocking for some to see methamphetamine take hold, even though MDMA (an

to rest..." Ultimately, Mr. Bart died when he went bankrupt, which symbolizes high society's
materialistic view that a man is only useful and valued if he has a fat wallet. Individuals lived by the
idea that happiness could be bought, while unwittingly causing their own demise. Wharton also
implies that high society's symbols of luxury can often be harmful when Lily becomes addicted to
tea. Wharton critiques society's willingness to go to any extent for the sake of appearing prominent,
"Lily was naturally proud of her mother's aptitude in this line: she had been brought up in the faith
that, whatever it cost, one must have a good cook, and be what Mrs. Bart called "decently dressed."
The characters are living a constant lie, and the fear that anyone outside the immediate family can be
privy to one's true financial position is evident when Mrs. Bart is reluctant to

Identity And Identity
Whether it be a dragon, tribal marking, Asian character, or a simple phrase, thousands of people get
tattoos daily. Tattoos play a significant role in self–expression and identity in the modern age as well
as since ancient times. Tattoos can be just for fun, symbolic of heritage and ancestry, representative
of accomplishments or life events, or can be just for style. For some people, it's an expression of
identity and personal beliefs. This is exactly the case for Leslie Jamison. She tells the story of her
tattoo in "Mark My Words. Maybe." On Jamison's forearm, the latin phrase "homo sum: humani nil
a me alienum puto". In English, this is translated to "I am human: nothing human is alien to me"
(Jamison 458). Throughout her story, she influences my understanding of identity. She does this by
elaborating her personal reasons for the tattoo and how, despite criticisms, she stays true to it and
even learns to accept and embrace it. I can now understand that identity can often times be hidden or
disguised behind past experiences and can often be missed by bystanders. The presence of a
meaningful tattoo gives a person the chance to literally where their heart on their sleeve and visually
express who they are.
Leslie Jamison, in her story "Mark My Words. Maybe," tells the story of her tattoo and its personal
significance. She starts off by describing the attention she would receive from people regarding the
tattoo that she had gotten on her arm. She was reluctant about getting

The Significance of Lily Bart's Death in The House of Mirth

  • 1. This Is Water Analysis There is no arguing that death is inevitable and inescapable. The repetition of life has created a human race that fades in and fades out, and everything that the individual obtains, tangible and intangible, disappears with us. By referencing pieces such as Stephen Crane's A Man Said to the Universe, Borges's The Art of Poetry, The Society of the Spectacle by Guy DeBord, David Foster Wallace's This is Water, and other outside authors, I will demonstrate that through art and basic principles of human interaction, we eventually become obsolete. If we believe that this is true, it is likely that we are living a life knowingly or unknowingly based on the philosophy of existentialism. The philosophy of existentialism extends far beyond a ten page ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He expressed the idea in which society needs reasoning to get by each day when really there are no absolutes in life and only definitions which are given to things. He claims in the lecture that, "we're a little bit of eternity sticking into three–dimensional space and, for some reason, occupying time in a monkey body." The idea that there are no absolutes in life is somewhat accurate, however, he McKenna forgot one absolute––death. One of the key pillars of existentialism is the idea that the past and future do not exist. In the A Universe Inside You, McKenna states that "...When you turn your eyes inward you discover the birth right. The existential facts out of which this particular existence emerged. And it's a great secret. A great secret and a great comfort. Because it means mystery didn't die with the fall of Arthur or the fall of Atlantis or the fall of anything. Mystery is alive in the moment, in the here and now." McKenna understands that people are living in the moment, however searching in the future for a meaning in life is a waste of ... • 5. Essay about Naturalism in The House of Mirth Naturalism in The House of Mirth Challenging the strict deterministic confines of literary naturalism, which hold that "the human being is merely one phenomenon in a universe of material phenomena" (Gerard 418), Edith Wharton creates in The House of Mirth a novel which irrefutably presents the human creature as being subject to a naturalistic fate but which conveys a looming sense of hope that one may triumph over environment and circumstance if one possesses a certain strength of will or a simple faith in human possibility. Because of Wharton's slight deviation from naturalistic conventions, a literary debate exists among critics as to the validity of viewing The House of Mirth as a novel which embodies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Making this theme uniquely hers, however, is Wharton's creation of two characters who are "exceptions to the seemingly ubiquitous law of social determinism" (Gerard 410). These characters, Nettie Struther and Lawrence Selden, one triumphing over her environment through sheer will, the other transcending it through faith in human possibility, create a small tear in the formidable fabric of strict naturalism, thus engendering a hope for the triumph of the human spirit. Edith Wharton develops Lady Bart as a character who is a product of her environment, preyed upon by circumstance and fate. Lily's name, referring to a highly ornamental flower, immediately creates the image of a delicate creature who is grown in the rich soils of society and who, if uprooted from this societal soil, would wither and perish. Lily, as any living organism, is not simply a static figure in her environment. Instead, she is a true naturalistic character, responsive and subject to the conditions of her surroundings. For example, when Lily and Selden meet at Bellomont, "Lily's beauty expanded like a flower in sunlight" (108) and, "her face turned toward him with the soft motion of a flower" (109). Thus, although it can be argued that Lily is not a naturalistic character because of Wharton's emphasis on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Report On The Amazon Basin In the Amazon Basin, an amazing plant called Ayahuasca, which is an entheogenic brew made out of Banisteriopsis caapi vine, and often in combination with various other plants. The word "Ayahuasca", from the Quechua language, means "vine of the souls". [1] For centuries, Amazonian shamans have used Ayahuasca as a window into the soul. The main reason it can change human brain and consciousness is that the plant contains a substance called DMT. N,N–dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is an illegal, psychedelic tryptamine compound found in the human body and at least 60 species of plants worldwide. [2] Rick Strassman described it as "the first endogenous human psychedelic" in his book DMT: The Spirit Molecule. [3] And in an interview in 2011, he said ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... McKenna (who, "more than anyone," Dr. Strassman wrote in 2000, "has raised awareness of DMT, through lectures, books, interviews, and recordings, to its present unprecedented level") [3] called DMT "the most powerful hallucinogen known to man and science" and "the commonest hallucinogen in all of nature" in his 1994 lecture "Rap Dancing Into the Third Millennium." [6] McKenna wondered why theology had not enshrined DMT as "its central exhibit for the presence of the other in the human world," and said in an interview in The Archaic Revival (1992): "It was really the DMT that empowered my commitment to the psychedelic experience. DMT was so much more powerful, so much more alien, raising all kinds of issues about what is reality, what is language, what is the self, what is three–dimensional space and time." [5] Besides, Stephen Szara had also reported hallucinations of strange creatures in his article Dimethyltryptamine Experiments with Psychotics. He described how one of his subjects under the influence of DMT had experienced "strange creatures, dwarves or something" at the beginning of a DMT trip. [7][8] Other researchers of the experience described 'entities ' or 'beings ' in humanoid as well as animal form, with descriptions of "little people" being common. This form of hallucination has been speculated to be the cause of alien abduction experiences through endogenously occurring DMT. • 13. The Effects Of Loneliness And Its Effects On Society Essay Did you know the physical effects of loneliness are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day? Or that loneliness raises your chance of death by 26%. Throughout history we've known loneliness is harmful. Emily Dickenson called loneliness, "The horror not to be surveyed." In the beginning of the Bible, it says, "It is not good for the man to be alone." And yet, in our western society we constantly seek after individualism. Our society glorifies going it alone. In a survey done by the PEW research center, parents ranked independence as more important that empathy, tolerance, and persistence. The drive to go it alone is deeply rooted in our culture and we're seeing the effects of what we've sown. Mental illness is on the rise. One in four women between 16 and 24 have harmed themselves, another 26% of these women are also affected by anxiety, depression, phobias or OCD. Depression and loneliness are at an all–time high. In the Facebook era we seem to have forgotten the value of community. Loneliness is especially dangerous for leaders. In The Prince, the world Machiavelli lays out for a leader is a lonely one. His "better to be feared than loved" principle is an idea that stifles community and isolates a leader. The story of Esther, however, proposes a different view of leadership, one in which community is of high value. While Esther's courage was heroic, it would not have been possible without the support of her community, specifically Mortdecai. Through Esther, we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Significance of Lily Bart's Death (House of Mirth) Assignment one – Discuss the significance of Lily Bart's death at the end of The House of Mirth. You should consider the implications both for the protagonist's social milieu and for women in general at this point in American history. The significance of Lily Bart's death. As a writer looking towards the twentieth century Wharton faced the challenge of telling the history of women past the age of thirty. The age of thirty was established as the threshold by nineteenth–century conventions. The conventions of 'girlhood' and marriage ability; a psychological observation about the formation of the female identity. Wharton shared Freud's pessimism about the difficulties of change for women. In his essay 'femininity', ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She cannot fully possess herself – could this be the meaning behind the word that is left unsaid? Could the word she wanted to tell Selden be 'freedom'? Earlier in the novel when walking with Selden in the park, Lily listens as he defines what 'success' means for him, 'My idea of success,...is personal freedom...from everything – from money, from poverty...from all the material accidents' (p.60). It appears that both Lily and Selden were too late in realising that it was in fact this freedom they both desired. The withholding of the word ultimately denies the reader access to Lily's dying thoughts. However, it is this switch from omniscient narration to free indirect discourse that allows the reader to fill this "textual space". Wharton manages to position the novel as psychological realism bordering on modernism. 7 Lily is repeatedly defeated. The aunt who should be there to rescue her disinherits her; her friend Bertha Dorset should be there for her, yet she throws her out in order to protect her own reputation; the man who should have faith in her, cannot trust her long enough to overcome his own emotional meticulousness. We see Lily being taken from the heights to her death in an unrelenting fall.8 Lily realises that her status as a lady does not exempt her from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Psychedelic Mushrooms Essay For most people, when the phrase psychedelic mushroom is thrown out, the first thing that comes to mind is hallucination. Some people think of LSD or the 60s, others may think more specifically to personal experiences they have had with the drug. Some may have used them recreationally as a teen, some may have had a single awful experience with them, or some may totally resent the idea of psychedelic mushrooms. No matter what someone may think of them, there is not a stranger thought process than Terence McKenna's. When psychedelic mushrooms are brought up around him, there are much stranger things than a memory of seeing God or a condescending idea of recreational fun going through his mind. McKenna's thought process is best explained in his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The more reproduction going on within a species, especially during an intense change in habit, the more chance of changes amongst the species itself. Also, the fact that only the mushroom consuming apes had a spike in arousal, this means the mushroom consuming apes are bound to outbreed the non–consumers. In other words, if the new generations are the ones adapting and surviving to the environmental change, it only makes sense that the older and less adaptive generations, which are not reproducing as much, are going to die off (MckennaCountrCulture). In Charles Darwin's famous book "The Origin of Species," Darwin explains that evolution happens with a benefitting change in behavior inside of a species. With this advantageous change, the offspring will grow with this change and, over time, these offspring will thrive and survive much longer than the other species. To further explain, Darwin illustrates a story about a wolf. In this story, the wolf learns more efficient ways to prey on certain animals and how to hunt certain animals. While this wolf is learning, he is breeding. While he is breeding, his offspring are learning to behave like him (Darwin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Why Charles Johnson Is Not An Indefatigable Investigator,... You WOULD NOT want Charles Johnson to look into your background, not if you had anything to hide. He is an indefatigable investigator, who, at the campus conservative magazine, the Claremont Independent – and at his own rollicking blog –for four years kept Claremont McKenna College buzzing with revelations about affirmative action, politically tendentious speakers, and abuses in student government. He held college administrators ' feet to the fire, and they got singed. It was easier to condemn than to refute him, and his critics soon gave up on the latter. Outside CMC, more disinterested judges quickly discovered the boldness of his reporting and commentary. Soon he had been awarded virtually every prize a young journalist of conservative disposition could receive: the Robert L. • 29. Comparison And Contrast Essay Racism for the most part has been a global issue in different countries. I believe that the characteristics of being racial is feeling as if your racial group has the power of being superior to others. Just like racism, discrimination to others have been used as powerful weapons stimulating fear and hatred of others. This is usually used to peoples advantage. The next three articles I choose to compare and contrast are "When the college Madness Came to My Campus" by Charles R. Kesler, "Blacklash Develops To Campus Protests" by Melissa Korn and Douglas Belkin and "Black Tape at Harvard Law" by Randall Kennedy. Kesler, an administrator who is giving a synopsis about the protests that occurred in the college he teaches, is trying to conserve the colleges values as well as their political beliefs, while students are trying to defend their rights. According to the article, in the late 40's Claremont McKenna college was a college that focused their curriculum on politics and economics p.2. Even though the college now practices both a liberal and conservative concept, I speculate that the author is trying to convince its audience of his believe of keeping their reputation conservative. "Today's students don't have free speech high on their agenda, to put it mildly" p.3. Students outburst and started a political correctness on campus mostly by minority students in an effort of keeping any speech that might be malicious or disrespectful in loquacity. "A coalition of self–proclaimed marginalized students presented a catalog of microaggressions they had suffered, demanding new forms of institutional support in compensation" p.2. The protest was intended to be for resolving differences, and quickly became a convenience for people identified as "victims" to complain about their cause of pain and suffering. Students at McKenna College wanted their voices to be heard, some of the protest they used was going on hunger strikes and profanity, they also demanded administration to take them more into consideration when it came to their rights and to be given equal opportunities regardless of their preferences. The college is clearly suffering from being diverse among its students and that's why students are fighting for a change. "That afternoon, President Chodosh replied with his own memo, announcing steps to satisfy the protesters, including two additional administrative positions on diversity and inclusion; a safe space to support new programming on the campus climate; pro– active measures to increase diversity in ... Today people are using psilocybin as a form of treatment because it is free, natural, safe, and effective in it's application to battle and cure many serious illnesses and psychological disorders. Their use can be seen in all corners of the planet by many sects of religions and indigenous peoples. Reasons for usage vary from religious or medical purposes, hunting, war, and spirituality. The drug use was viewed with much less of a negative stigma than it is today. It wasn't until recently that the government cracked down on the use of psychedelic drugs. They placed many of the drugs into schedules in which the legality of the drug was assigned. Most of the drugs can be found on the list of schedule one substances. Schedule one drugs are drugs that have a high potential for abuse, has no currently accepted medical use, and has a lack of accepted safety under medical supervision. Lily's Choice in The House of Mirth Essays Lily's Choice in The House of Mirth Near the beginning of The House of Mirth, Wharton establishes that Lily would not indeed have cared to marry a man who was merely rich: "she was secretly ashamed of her mothers crude passion for money" (38). Lily, like the affluent world she loves, has a strange relationship with money. She needs money to buy the type of life she has been raised to live, and her relative poverty makes her situation precarious. Unfortunately, Lily has not been trained to obtain money through a wide variety of methods. Wharton's wealthy socialites do not all procure money in the same way: money can be inherited, earned working in a hat shop, won at cards, traded scandalously between married men and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lily Bart has to die because she is completely incapable of adapting to this world of direct transactions, and in the end the only two paths she sees both lie firmly in that realm. First, a distinction must be made between direct and indirect transaction. Lily can happily live in a world where wealth circulates obliquely and freely. When Lily stays as a guest at Bellomont eating fine food at her hosts expense, she is not receiving payment for goods or services. Instead, her charm has earned her the benefits of friendship with the rich. Lily is not exactly being paid to be charming; instead, being charming attracts the generous hospitality and entertainment of wealthy friends. The distinction between this type of benefit and direct compensation is enormous. When the reader encounters Lily in Chapter Ten of Book Two, Lily has fled from the world of Norma Hatch to the milliners shop––and it was an offer of direct reward that made it necessary for Lily to escape. Wharton writes, "The sense of being involved in a transaction she would not have cared to examine too closely had soon afterward defined itself in the light of a hint from Mr. Stancy that if she saw them through, she would have no reason to be sorry" (293–3). Lily has no qualms about living as a guest of her rich friends, but the idea of selling her charm and becoming a sort of social mercenary holds no appeal for her: "The implication that such loyalty would meet with a direct ... • 69. Analysis Of A Quiet Passion By Terence Davies I think if you're at the least an English major or minor in college, as I was, you're bound to come across the poetry of Emily Dickinson in a class or two. Her work is profound and terribly moving, as words flow out in such a way that you can feel the depths of feeling stretching through a nervous system that may have only just been wracked by fits and that the questioning of what GOD is or what LIFE and DEATH are have no choice but to be sussed out. There are also love poems too, or at least poems sorting out what those feelings might amount to, or what it means to be at the foot of the stairs looking at someone and not being able to, or feeling like, or whatever, going down. There's a lot of the pain, but also the joy and reverie, in connection or those possibilities in her work. The question then for Terence Davies is: what about the woman? There is some joy here, or even small chirpings of humor in that reserved 19th century comedy–of–manners way at times in the first two–thirds... and then the last third is among the saddest things I've seen unfold in a very long time. What makes A Quiet Passion convincing is that Davies and his crew and cast commit to it all, and his style is one of patience with his compositions and movements of the frame – let's take a little time moving across faces, for example, listening to a piece of music, or let's make sure we don't too much when we can see the sum total of emotions an actor is expressing in listening (or, as a character may ... To others this quote may spark an image of a serene beach overlooking a breathtaking sunset, but to me, this quote entails my fond memories of going to a haunted mansion and school field trip off to the wilderness. The chilly October breeze brushed our faces, while twinkling stars studded the night sky. My bucket was up to the rim and the chances of getting a cavity were higher. I was trick–or–treating with couple of friends, and we had arrived at our last stop: Alpine's haunted mansion. "This going to be easy" boasted Mia. We all stared at her. "What? You just have look at anything that's moving, and tell it who's boss." she advised. We were waiting see who was going to actually stand their ground. Walking down the steep incline, our path lit by the bright lights of police cars. This can't be good I thought anxiously. Before us was a pitch black metal gate, and we knew once we stepped forth, we couldn't turn back until we had our candy Clutching my bag, I made my way to the candy stand. Eery music drifted around us, while my eyes preyed on every movement. To reach the candy stand, there was a stone path, stretching a good thirty feet from the entrance. At either side of the path there were rows of lights revealing the still ethos of skinny trees. "Did you guys hear something?" Shivani stammered. We stopped and listened. Nothing. ... • 85. Analysis Of Television Shows And Peaky Blinders It is often said that there are two sides to every story. "Peaky Blinders" and "Boardwalk Empire" are the perfect example of this as they tell essentially the same story through very different lenses. These two iconic television series tackle the subject of society post World War I, and a soldier's place in it. Though the details often vary between the two, they share the same core characteristics. Both are post–war crime dramas, centered around a strong, dignified character, where both are leaders of his own respective criminal organization. Additionally, both shows are set in the Roaring Twenties, a time full of reform and evolution. This inherently meant the show would have to address the social issues during this time–period or lose some sense of credibility. "Peaky Blinders" does a fantastic job of this by making these social problems a recurring theme in the show. "Boardwalk Empire", while much subtler in the way it handles social problems, is equally successful. Because of this, each of these dramas could also be considered a series on social issues post WWI. Intriguing, engaging, riveting, these descriptions could describe either of these shows; alternatively, so could slow, tedious, and meticulous. The creators of both set out to create an entertaining, compelling, and accurate, if sometimes exaggerated and dramatized, series. Globalisation And Globalization Globalisation can have a variety of different meanings and one that accurately summarises these is "is the integration of economies, industries, markets, cultures and policy–making around the world" (Financial Times). This integration has been viewed by many as a largely positive thing for humanity as a whole however, others have been critical of globalisation, for example, due to the growth of influence certain parts of the world have over the rest of the world. There are many discussions to be had on this, although it is critical that focus is drawn to how people in various cultures are affected by globalisation. An important aspect of globalisation is the cultural influence of not only the West, but specifically of America's place in our globalised world. In academic philosophy, America has become a dominant force in the other cultures. This can be seen even in European cultures, where Shusterman (2000) observed American thinkers being sought after to make appearances at cultural events as well as guest speakers. This is due to a contrast between new American ways of thinking compared to ideologies that dominate discussion in European philosophical discussion. This has the potential to be great of course, we should be seeking to look to other cultures to break away from limiting ourselves strictly to our cultural point of view. However, most of this comes from age. It's interesting then, watching the Hammond–era films, and trying to view them as anything remotely serious. They aren't. However, they do, at times, manage to disguise themselves as such. In reality, these movies are no Rosemary's Baby, but rather the birth of a new brand of gothic horror– the gore filled, B–movie, spin–off franchise films; a weird series of twisted exploitation reboots, upping the ante and upping the ridiculous names. The two things that immediately came to mind when watching these films is the obvious influence they had on the work of Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro, and Kate Bush's song "Hammer Horror" – I admire both artists greatly, so I went in the Hammerverse with my eyes wide open. In regards to the evolution Terence Fischer took the genre into, it could be said that grabbed horror by the haunches and pulled into a new, appalling era. Author Sinclair McKay, writing for The Telegraph, describes the reception for the early Hammer films, "Indeed, when the Hammer Horrors first appeared with The Curse of Frankenstein in 1957 the critics rose up like a torch–bearing mob, horrified by the (minimal) shots of blood. Role of science and technology in the current world is a theme that has come out vividly in the novel. Dinosaurs brought back to live? 'Creatures beyond wildest imagination resurrected from dead', cloning achieved by genetically engineering DNA salvaged from mosquitoes that fed on mosquitoes. It is only through technology that Hammond has succeeded in bringing back extinct dinosaurs; technology is used to guard the fierce animals and to control the park. Trouble in paradise happens when technology fails or shut down by the systems engineer who plans to steal dinosaur's embryo. Michael Crichton managed to use dinosaurs and Jurassic Park to reflect on contemporary world – Humans and their environment. In the park, we are treated to powerful and epic, dinosaurs portrayed are fierce and intolerable; but, in contrast, we're shown an epic scene with peaceful magnificent dinosaurs grazing. Human beings are different in the world; they differ ideologically, by culture, religion, and race. The differences sometimes can lead them to fight. The fighting is believed to settle old scores; Michael Crichton has used Velociraptors, T–rex and Tyrannosaurus vicious dinosaurs to depict the intolerant human community, while ... The Theme Of Tragedy In The House Of Mirth Claudia Feher American Studies 1st year The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton The House of Mirth is a novel that condemns the elitist world of women and promotes the idea that money can't buy happiness. Wharton wanted to present American aristocracy when that aristocracy was doing so well. The novel highlights each aspect of a person's social behavior because each detail can have implications. Wharton wanted to mock the society, but also to show the tragedies in it. Wharton considered New York society to be arrogant, trivial, and ridiculous. The burden of tragedy to her often a humorous bitter satire of the ways of the wealthy is related with Wharton's personal connection to this world. • 109. Psychoactive Drugs And Its Effects On Human Consciousness A psychoactive drug is any substance that can be used to change brain function. This resulting change is responsible for alterations in perception, mood, and consciousness. As long as man has had a basic grasp on understanding consciousness they have tried delving deeper and deeper into their own consciousness and not only grown a larger respect for just how deep they can go but have had experiences that have encouraged them to go deeper. Rock paintings and fossil finds from as far back as 10,000 years ago offer scientific evidence and proof of the extremely long and exciting history of psychedelic drugs. Unfortunately it wouldn't be until the 20th century that we would actually start to understand just how valuable and versatile these substances truly would be. From religious and spiritual uses to medicinal and more, psychoactive drugs, particularly ones more in the realm of psychedelics, are more important to learning and understanding our own consciousness than we can even understand. Terence McKenna, an American philosopher who focused on the nature of consciousness and the relationship between consciousness and psychedelic drugs, was a firm believer that the nature of consciousness and the evolution of man was all owed to the incorporation of psychedelic mushrooms into the early mans diet. He believes that the psychedelics in their diet are what promoted self–realization and eventually prompted our earliest ancestors to develop language. Archaeologists credit the use ... Australian Voices in Film: "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" Essay Question: Stereotyping of character representations "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" is a hilarious comedy, brought together brilliantly by writer and director Stephan Elliot. Tick/Mitzi and Adam/Felicia are two drag queens that travel across Australia on a lavender bus with there transsexual friend Ralph/Bernadette. All three challenge the dominant stereotype of the Australian male. Released in 1994, 14 years into the AIDS epidemic, the film had a phenomenal response around the world and in Australia. Travelling from Sydney, the three main characters played by Hugo Weaving, Guy Peirce and Terrance Stamp travel to Alice Springs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mitzi presents another view of gay men. 'She' is more embarrassed about being a drag queen, especially in front of 'her' son stating "Sorry about last night. I don't always dress up in women's clothes. I mean don't get the wrong idea. I do lots of different stuff......... You know, like Elvis and Garry Glitter and......." Although in the end 'she' loosens up when 'she' realizes that 'her' son accepts 'her' for whom she is. Mitzi. Bob contrasts with the gay characters. He represents a gender binary of masculinity. Bob is an open– minded mechanic that takes a liking to Bernadette. Bob travels with the three on their journey after Priscilla brakes down. He was married to a mail–order wife, a Filipino prostitute that left him during the movie stating that he wasn't a good husband. During the trip the three main characters stop off in Coober Pedy, a small tough town. Bob goes to the local pub to drink with his mates but Felicia comes along too, dressed as a women. The men at the pub react violently. This is a stereotype about Australian men that are confronted with different types of masculinity. "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" is important to Australian culture not only for a great laugh but because it teaches people that there are many different types of Australian men and to embrace our diversity. The Continuum Model: The Mysteries Of Perception Abstract The continuum model proposed by Fiske and Neuberg in 1999 explains how people can use different impression formation processes to categorize new acquaintances in different social environments. These being category–based processing, which might be even seen as primitive and innate from the human consciousness, we can slowly move towards a more piecemeal data–based processing as our motivation and relative importance is increased. Otherwise we stand in an almost superficial stereotypical assumption of human perception. Keywords: Continuum model, social cognition, perception, attitudes, behavior, psychedelics, entheogens. Perception can greatly vary from person to person. The way a person perceives a new acquaintance is mostly going to be very different than the next one. Many factors play a role in making this statement true. Race, religion, culture, country of origin, and most importantly, the level of education will have an immediate effect on how we perceive not only people but the world in general this way of processing information about other people and social situations is also referred to as social cognition. Perception might be relative because the way the world is perceived for a person suffering from Autism Spectrum disorder will be completely different than how a person with down syndrome perceive the world, and a person who does not suffer from any of these disorders will obviously have a different view of the world which will be more in coincidence with the perception of the general population of an specific place. The same goes for people who take certain drugs, for example, people who take Lysergic Acid Diethylamide or LSD will have a completely different way of perceiving the world than someone who has not taken anything or even compared to himself sober, his or her way of perceiving the world will be affected for the next 8 to 12 hours. The Working Class In Edith Wharton's The House Of Mirth challenging or overcoming the marketplace is not even possible: she approaches the topic from an aristocratic perspective, which offers no alternative to the standard of a business–centered society. Para. 28: Wharton nevertheless tries to overcome this impossibility by exploring it through the working class. The character of Nettie, for instance, is representative of being outside the exchange system, and therefore able to "transcend" the exchange system. Para. 29: Placing her hope for change within her idealized vision of the working class, Wharton seeks to find an exit from the confines of the marketplace mentality. Dimock's final argument, then, is that the House of Mirth is Wharton's critique of a system that places arbitrary values on human experiences for the sake of short–term capital gain. In "Debasing Exchange: Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth," Wai–Chee Dimock seeks to prove how The House of Mirth acts as an illuminating critique of the society in which it is set, namely how and why social interactions are defined by an all pervasive system of exchange that ultimately defines all other aspects of the characters' lives. She establishes intellectual territory in her analysis by reading closely into the myriad of relationships between the characters in the novel, attending to how their dialogue and actions are steeped in the language of business. Born Free Themes In the movie Born Free, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers play conservationists Joy and George Adamson, who become the surrogate parents of three lion cubs, later giving two to a zoo and keeping Elsa, the smallest of the bunch. As their time with the lioness continues, they are given orders to return her to the wild, where they realize they must return her to her roots among the African Savannah, touching on the theme of nature and the true meaning of freedom. Elsa's legacy within this film is her role as an ambassador–like role in being a bridge between mankind and nature in helping understand the limit in humanity's ability to survive alongside the wild. Like humans, animals are capable of emotion. Many people fear creatures like Elsa because they are mainly known for their instinctual and predatorial nature. In the film, John Kendall, George's boss and presumably experienced in wildlife like lions, is fearful of Elsa despite her easygoing and merry attitude with the Adamsons. His position somewhat makes this ironic, as one would not normally fear what they are trying to protect and take care of. Elsa portrays a wide range of emotions that people would usually think she would be unable to comprehend. Elsa expresses sorrow when Joy leaves for town and as she waits for her to come back home, and then elation in Joy's return. According to Caulfield, " ...you could hear them all yelling, deep and terrific on the Pencey side, because practically the whole school except me was there..."(Salinger 2). This scene alone truly demonstrates how Holden does not to be included with the others, being the student body of his school. "Tweaking," the common name for sniffing lines of speed, the drug methamphetamine, (popular for its availability and price) has somehow replaced MDMA and LSD as the perfect rave drug, allowing users the clear head and stamina to keep dancing long after their bodies have gone to sleep. A prominent opinion during the aftermath of the Los Angeles Summer of Love was that speed killed the rave scene. Where speed had been seen in every scene from metal to the punk scene, for some reason it was shocking for some to see methamphetamine take hold, even though MDMA (an amphetamine–like substance) had been circulating for years. It teaches one the intricate art of keeping up appearances and assimilating into the fickle leisure class. At the same time, the novel's underlying purpose is to subtly critique this social order. Lily Bart's perpetual, although often reluctant quest for financial stability and mass approval is a vehicle for demonstrating the numerous absurdities and constant pretensions of a class that revolved around money and opinion. Wharton hints at the toll of the constant anxiety of falling from luxury, "Lily could not recall the time when there had been money enough, and in some vague way her father seemed always to blame for the deficiency." She offers a hidden opinion that obsessing about money leaves one no time to enjoy life, "It seemed to tire him to rest..." Ultimately, Mr. Bart died when he went bankrupt, which symbolizes high society's materialistic view that a man is only useful and valued if he has a fat wallet. Individuals lived by the idea that happiness could be bought, while unwittingly causing their own demise. Wharton also implies that high society's symbols of luxury can often be harmful when Lily becomes addicted to tea.
