A werewolf in folklore and mythology is a person who shape shifts into a wolf, either purposely, by
using magic or by being placed under a curse. Werewolves were known in almost all European
countries and cultures. Werewolves are only second in line to vampires in popularity.
The word werewolf is most likely to derive from two old–Saxon words, wer (meaning man) and
wolf. In Greek, the terms Lycanthropy refers to the transformation process while Lycanthrope,
which is a synonym to werewolf, is the afflicted person. The popular definition of werewolf or
lycanthrope is a man who transforms himself or being transformed into a wolf under the influence of

The history behind his downfall was rather bizarre. He had started to practice sorcery when he was
only 12 and was so obsessed with it that even tried to make a pact with the Devil. Wearing a magic
girdle he started to attack his enemies, real or imaginary. After several months, he would take the

Although there is not as much metaphor to be found in the Danish story, there is still a fair amount
of symbolism present due to false beliefs and wives tales. The folklore Michèle Simonsen discusses
is as follows. Young women who do not wish to feel the pain of childbirth can perform a ritual
(Simonsen 225–226). This ritual involves taking the afterbirth of a mare and stretching it out
(Simonsen 225–226). The woman who wanted the effects of this ritual would then take off all of

Critical approaches:
The sound used in dog soldiers was very dramatic and is non–diegetic. The editing was fast paced
and added dramatic tension to the setting of the film; the setting was quite dark throughout the film
and as it was set in an isolated house in a forest this also helped to add to the dramatic effect. In
terms of cinematography, there was a large amount of point of view shots and certain points of the
film were in black and white. Accelerated hot reverse shot shows energy of conversation and can see
the characters emotion and reactions. Zoom – into window towards woman, slow motion – fire
chasing the car and explosion. Camerawork – medium shots, close ups, handheld camera views,
over the shoulder and pan of men around the table. The technical elements identified to help find out
what the genre of the film would be, the fact that it includes a lot of violence, blood and intense
scenes would lead most audiences to believe it was a thriller or horror type film. Another convention
is that is evident in dog soldiers is fantasy; this is because it includes werewolves, who are not
proven to be real, there are also some elements of comedy.

Werewolves are creatures that we find in many different cultures around the world. The most
classically known origin story for the beasts comes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. In it's first book,
Jupiter goes to Earth to observe humans after hearing of their evil nature. He reveals himself to the
Arcadians who immediately start worshipping, all except their king, Lycaon. He does not believe the
god's immortality and seeks to put it to the test. Lycaon kills a messenger from another city and
cooks him with the intent to force cannibalism on the god. Jupiter immediately sees through this

The werewolf is most commonly known as a man that has the ability to change from a man into a
half man– half wolf creature. For this to happen the person must have been bitten by a werewolf,

Humans position in Carter's version of the natural world
The nature is described as the place where the landscapes, the humans and the creature exist in
common place. Carter has presented how the nature exist and how the humans survive in the nature.
According to Carter, "The Company of Wolves" takes place in a forested, mountainous country in
the dead of winter. The place where exists the wolves. The narrator explains that wolves are ruthless
creatures who live to terrorize and kill those less strong. They are especially ruthless in the winter,
when food is scarce. "The wolf is carnivore incarnate and he's as cunning as he is ferocious; once
he's had a taste of flesh then nothing else will do" (Morfetas, Elpida, and Tanya Ceolin, p–299),
another side of nature that is destructive. The nature is mixed up everything with the good things
and the bad things. All the good aspects are extracted by human beings for their living whereas they
also must keep an eye on the bad things for survival. There is always danger hidden in the forest and
children always carry knives with them when they go to tend the little flocks of goats. These knives,
half the size of theirs, are sharpened every day for fear of the wolf.
The humans got to survive in the nature anyway. When the nature tends to threaten the humans,

Marie de France begins her story by describing Bisclavret, her main character, as well as defining
what a werewolf is: "a ferocious beast which, when possessed by this madness, devours men, causes
great damage and dwells in vast forests" (de France, 68). She wants to relate the two by allowing the
reader to decide what she means by the descriptions and why she would correlate them. De France
does a little play and twists the monsters throughout her story. Being a werewolf, Bisclavret may
start out as a monster without; and, at first, his wife seems to be so beautiful and innocent, but there
lied a monster within her. Later in the story, Bisclavret is no more than a human being, and his wife's
monstrousness shows from within and she transforms into a monster without. The themes gathered
from this story are the relationship between love and suffering, justice, and the wife who may be at
first likable, but then changes the way that "monsters" are viewed. In order to modify the stereotypes
of what a monster is, de France made Bisclavret, a werewolf, the "good guy," and his beautiful wife,
an unforeseen "bad guy." The wife in the story Bisclavret portrays a trustworthy, loving wife, until
she reacts quite differently to him being honest with whom he really is. Her character is the very
thing, which makes the reader reconsider the definition of a monster and the truth about monsters
within.

wealthy family. The father was a scientist, and often away from home, while the mother, very

a clever and active boy, with a good disposition for the intellectual fields, and took the mother as a

Although the belief in werewolves as a dangerous and killing monster has been dispelled in the 21st
century we are still fascinated by the werewolves and these creatures have a presence in our present
society as well. They are referenced in movies of 1981 – 'An american werewolf in london', recently

main characters named Mirabella, the youngest among fifteen girls. Another, are those types that go

I knew I wanted to be my favorite horror character for Halloween, but I didn't expect the costume to
come to life... It all started last week on Halloween. I went to the store to get my costume. I was
going to be a Werewolf, my favorite horror character. I found the perfect mask, and the perfect plan
to scare my friend Sola. I never knew the horror that would soon await me the next day.When I got
home, I put the costume in my closet. And I got ready for bed, for I got home around 9:00. When I
woke up the next morning, My room was a mess! Things were everywhere. I then saw my costume
in the floor. I thought "It could've been only one person: My little sister." I ran over to her room and
she was not there. Then I forgot that it could not have been her for she was at a sleepover at her
friend's house.
There was no other way my room could've been trashed. Perhaps my cat got in my room? So I
hurried downstairs to eat breakfast. After breakfast I hurried to my bus stop. Along the way my
friend Sola came, she missed her stop which was the one before mine so she came over here in
hopes she was not too late. I was happy to see her. We walked to my stop together. On the way she
constantly talked about how much she knew about werewolves. As soon as we got there we heard
the familiar hum of the bus engine and got on the bus. At school we read horror stories, they all
seemed silly.
After school I started to clean my room only to figure out that my cat, Aryah, was clawing at my
halloween costume! I quickly started to grab my cat and when I picked her up she looked at me with
such fearful eyes that I knew something was wrong. Before I could question what must of happened,
I heard the door open. My sister had came back from her sleep over. Seeing my room trashed she

Throughout history, there are records of the trials of confessed or accused werewolves. In fact, they
were questioned and executed the same way witches were, because they often witches were
considered also werewolves. These so–called "werewolf's trials" give us a historical glimpse at
rampant human belief in werewolves. Some of the people who were accused of being werewolves
were arrested because villagers needed someone to blame for dead livestock or some other
