Communicative Competence The ability to use the language correctly and appropriately to accomplish communicative goals

Linguistic Competence The ability to produce and interpret meaningful utterances which are formed in accordance with the rules of the language
Pragmatic Competence Discourse Competence: How to construct longer stretches of language and how to interpret them. How are words, phrases and sentences together to create conversations, speeches, emails messages, etc?
Pragmatic Competence Functional competence: The social uses of language. the relationship between speaker and listener. The assessment of the other person's knowledge, time and interest.
Pragmatic Competence Functional competence: The rules for using language for different purposes in different contexts.  It includes  as well as topic appropriateness, and turn taking.
Sociolinguistic Competence Succesful communication involves a substancial degree of shared socio-cultural knowledge which could be obtained through the interaction between speakers of the target language. Sociolinguistic competence allows the learner to use the language appropriately in different contexts.
Strategic Competence The ability to recognize and repair communication breakdowns. Knowing how to manage a social situation when you are not quite sure about the rules of etiquette.
