What is Corruption?
Corruption can mean so many things and can be interpreted in countless ways but in the most
simplistic way of explaining what it is, it is the misuse of judgment, the struggle between what is
right and what is wrong. No one really knows what led to corruption, but some say it was religious
reasons that led to this malfeasance, meaning the devil, while others believe different. People in
today's society tend to relate this topic to politics because it is most commonly occurs within that
faction of society. Corruption is a reoccurring theme throughout The Crucible, it shows through the
political, McCarthyism, religious and personal reasons of the Colonial Era. The Crucible takes place
in the early England colonies in Salem, Massachusetts during what we know as the witch trials. It is
based on a group of girls involved in "witch like" activities, who begin to accuse others of
committing witchcraft just so that they do not get into trouble. One girl controls the group, Abigail
Williams, and she plots against Elizabeth Proctor who is married to John Proctor, who Abigail had
an affair with. Due to these childish and dramatic acts of Abigail and the girls, half the townspeople
were taken to trial and found guilty of witchery and worshipping the devil and were sentenced to

are.
In Seven Monster Theses, Jeffery Cohen develops an idea that "monsters" are essential to society. In
fact, they construct what is "normal", "rational", and "civilized". Specifically, "monsters" are
foundational to how we view ourselves. "Monsters" contain all the traits deemed unacceptable and
odd. It can be concluded that every outlier is a "monster". In St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by
Wolves, Karen Russell tells the story of a pack of wolf girls who are transitioning into young ladies.
Russell delves into society's need for conformity, gender roles, and change. The story is told from
the point of view of the middle wolf girl, Claudette, and follows her on her journey from wolf to
woman. In relation to Jeffery Cohen's idea of monster culture, Claudette's journey applies to Thesis
IV "The Monster Dwells at the Gates of Difference" and part of Thesis I "The Monster's Body is a
Cultural Body". Claudette is torn between two worlds and she has to learn how to successfully
"move between the two cultures". Through Cohen's theses, Karen Russell uses character
development and dialogue to depict the inner and outer battle of societal femininity and
individualized femininity and the consequence of accepting either side. The presence of "monsters"
are essential for this acceptance.
To build "the gate of difference", Russell makes Claudette resistant to the culture change. This

Wayne Williams was born on May 27th, 1958 to Homer and Faye Williams of Atlanta, Georgia. He
graduated from Douglass High School and furthered his education at Georgia State University, but
later dropped out to explore a new talent. Williams took a specific interest in music, pursuing a
career in radio and managing a band. Williams' educational background and career both were pivotal
to his defense. In 1979, children and teens seemed to simple vanish. Each child met certain criteria:
young, black, and from Atlanta. The first two victims, Edward Smith and Alfred Evans, who were
both 14 years old, disappeared four days apart in June. Both of their bodies were found close
together in a remote, wooded area of South Atlanta one month later. Nine–year–old Yusuf Bell went
missing on October 21st, 1979 and his body was recovered November 8th of the same year. Police
did not connect the dots with Bell's murder because he was fully clothed, found in a remote area, but
was strangled to death, unlike Smith and Evans, who were shot with a .22 caliber. Williams' next
alleged victim, 12–year–old Angel Lenair, was also strangled. She was found in an abandoned lot,
