With 360 warehouses, located in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and the
United Kingdom, Costco Wholesale Corporation is the largest and most profitable chain of its kind.
In September 1983 Costco's first warehouse opened in Seattle, Washington. At this time, warehouse
outlets had long existed, but the concept of a wholesale club was relatively new and promising.
Dubbed "buyers' clubs" and begun in 1976, these warehouses were wholesalers that required
shoppers to become members and pay an annual membership fee. The membership fee helped
reduce already–low overhead, so that items could be sold at an average of 9 percent over cost from
the manufacturer. At the time Costco was formed, membership warehouses were primarily a West
Coast phenomenon; however, since then, their popularity has spread throughout the United States,
across the borders to Canada and Mexico, and beyond to many other countries. From the company's
inception, Jeffrey H. Brotman has served as chairman of Costco, and James D. Sinegal has been
president. While Sinegal had a background in membership warehouses and retail chains (having
been mentored by Sol Price, the founder of Fed Mart and Price Club), Brotman was an executive of
an oil exploration company and cofounder of a group that operated a chain of apparel stores. In 1985

From the hub, they were sent directly to the store giving them a competitive advantage in reducing
cost because Wal–Mart effectively took advantage of economies of scale by ordering large
quantities. These items would then be distributed through their own logistic infrastructure to their
stores. Reducing cost was always a key organizational goal and in doing so, Wal–Mart eliminated
the middleman and dealt directly with manufacturers, an unprecedented move in retail at that time.
Wal–Mart also developed a system known as cross–docking, in which they would deliver goods to a
consumer directly from the manufacturer, eliminating the need to bring it to a store or hold
inventory. Next, they developed one of the greatest computer systems that helped to link supplier
and store information systems together. This allowed the supplier direct access to their sales;
therefore, they were able to monitor the system to determine when to send inventory as needed,
reducing purchase order time. An important part of its logistic system was its transportation system.
Human resource managers made sure they hired competent truck drivers that were required to go
from the manufacturer to the store or even to the consumer. The trucks were owned by Wal–Mart

In 2009 and forward, Loblaw Companies were up against aggressive competitive markets while still
dealing with the backlash from the 2008 world economic crisis. Same store sales were on the
decline and Loblaw's was in desperate need to change their store strategies. By 2011, Loblaw's had
come up with the idea to diversify and expand their operations with new upgrades to in store
departments as well as expanding upon their leading brands, President's Choice and No Name. This
case study underlines the premise of national and global strategies, which is a key subject matter and
general broad topic when studying International Business. The main concerns of this case study
would be to identify if Loblaw's new strategies gave them a leading edge in the ever–expanding

Target Corporation Business Analysis
Target Corporation is an American retailing company that uses various retail formats that range from
low–end to high–end items. It was founded in 1902 by George Draper Dayton. It is now the fourth
largest retailer in the United States and operates almost 1600 stores in 47 states (Funding Universe,
2004). Target differentiate themselves by other competitors by offering consumers fashion products
and grocery at affordable prices, that drags the customers into purchasing more. A typical Target

unique niche in this crowded, post–big–box, digital–retail world would not be easy, but it was the
only way for Best Buy to avoid the same fate as the now–defunct Circuit City. The recent holiday
results were encouraging, but investors were already clamoring for more details on what Joly's next

A Brief History of Best Buy
Together with his business partner, James Wheeler, Richard Schulze founded Sound of Music, an
audio specialty store, in Minnesota in 1966. The fledgling company ended its first fiscal year with
gross sales of $173,000, and continued to grow rapidly over the next few years. By the time of its
