Terry Fox was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer treatment activist known for his Marathon of Hope across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Despite losing his leg to cancer, Fox ran over 3,339 miles across Canada with one prosthetic leg before the cancer spread and he had to stop. Fox passed away in 1981 at age 22, but his legacy lives on through the annual Terry Fox Run, the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research.
