Canada was first discovered by Vikings led by Leif Ericson, but it was not widely known until John Cabot rediscovered the eastern shores of Canada for Europe in 1497. Some iconic Canadian foods include poutine from Quebec consisting of fries, gravy and cheese, beaver tails from Ottawa, and maple syrup from eastern Canada. Ice hockey is Canada's national winter sport, with legendary player Wayne Gretzky being considered the greatest of all time. Terry Fox is a famous Canadian who attempted to run across Canada with one leg to raise money for cancer research after losing his leg to cancer, but unfortunately passed away during his "Marathon of Hope" before completing his journey.

No one knew about this discovery so Canada was forgotten until1497 when an Italian man named John Cabot sailed west from Bristol, England. The voyage led to the rediscovery of the eastern shores of Canada.

3. Canadian FoodOne type of Canadian food is poutine.It comes from Quebec, and is French fries with gravy and a special type of cheese on top. Ottawa is known for making beaver tails. Maple syrup is made from maple tree sap in eastern Canada. Tim Horton's is a Canadian coffee and donut restaurant. On commercials they say, “Always fresh, always Tim Hortons.”

4. Canadian hockeyOne of Canada's national sports is Ice Hockey. Wayne Gretzky is Canadian and is the best hockey player to ever play the sport. He is known as “The Great One”He won the Stanley Cup 4 times with the Edmonton Oilers. (Stanley Cup = gold medal for hockey)

5. Terry FoxTerry Fox is a very famous Canadian. He got cancer in his leg so it was amputated when he was only 19. They gave him an artificial leg. He started running across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately he got sick when he was still running and passed away.Every year since his death we do a Terry Fox run to raise money for cancer research.

6. Marathon of HopeThe Marathon of Hopestarted as a dream – two friends (Terry running and his friend driving the van), a 42 km section of highway every day, and the belief that they could make it across Canada.
