3. What is Bullet Train?
A bullet train is a term used to describe a high-speed
rail train.
Launched on October 1, 1964 in Japan between Tokyo
and Osaka.
It was named as Shinkansen.
Shinkansen was designed to run at a speed of 320
km/hr.
4. Bullet Train In India
Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor.
Foundation stone laid on 14th September 2017.
Expected to be completed by 15th August 2022.
Corridor will use Shinkansen series.
Corridor will be 508 km long.
Will take about 2 hrs 58 min. to complete its journey.
5. Infrastructure & Operations
Will have length b/w 10 to 16 coaches.
Each train will have passenger capacity b/w 1300 to
1600.
There will be two type of services
• Rapid Service
• Slower Service
6. Rapid Service
Will have only two stops – Surat & Vadodara.
Stopping time will be 165 sec.
Journey time will be 2 hr 7 min.
7. Slower Service
Will halt at all the 12 stations b/w Mumbai &
Ahmedabad .
Station will include Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar,
Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand,
Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.
Stopping time will be 165 sec.
Journey time will be about 2hrs 58min
8. Construction
Total length 508 km
• 92 % elevated 18m above ground
• 6 % through tunnels
• 2 % will be on land
Initially Railways will operate 35 trains and by 2050
it will be increased to 105.
9. Operational Cost
Estimated cost is 1.1 Lakh Crore
JICA agreed to fund 81% of total cost.
JICA will provide fund through 50 year loan at an
interest rate of 0.1%
50 years will be counted from 16th year of operation
Elevation of track has increased cost by 10k crores.

Bullet train has sets of pros and cons under India’s
present situations and they need to be properly handled
so that it brings prosperity and development in the
country and not debacles. Every factor must be
considered wisely and safeguarding of people’s living
should not be compromised. There are risks in this
project but without risks nothing big can be acquired.
