2. What is the Internet?
Just like two humans can talk to each other, two or
more computers can communicate.
When computers communicate, they create a network
Tons of effort by many engineers has gone into creating
the Internet as we know it today
3. To build a really big network, you build
lots of little networks and then hook
the networks to each other, creating an
internetwork. That’s all the Internet
really is: the world’s largest
internetwork (hence its name).
- Ned Snell
4. In short, anything we want!
• Read a blog
• Watch cat videos
• Listen to Gangman Style
• Share pictures of that beautiful landscape
• Talk with your friends until you fall asleep
• Learn how to print “Hello World”
• Manage a company while in pajamas at home
What can we do with the Internet?
5. Yeah! Why not?
1. Create a website
2. Add a database with your company’s data
3. Tell your employees how to use
4. Now everyone has access to it 24/7
wherever they are.
Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?
Manage an
organization?
Is it that simple?
6. Hold on for a second
Quick question:
Is it a good idea to have all
this information available
to literally anyone?
7. So, what is an Intranet?
An Intranet is a private network where employees can
access information from the company, share updates
with co-workers, have online meetings and
collaborate to produce value for the company
Here is where an Intranet can help us
8. How does an Intranet work?
• Some Intranets are local networks and can be accessed only from the
office using equipment provided by the company.
• Others are hosted on the Internet and can be accessed from anywhere.
• In any case, they implement authentication to ensure only employees can
enter.
• They also have different levels of access so that employees can only see
information relevant to their work.
