WHAT IS THE INTERNET?
•The Internet can be defined as a vast network that connects all
over the world.
•The Internet, is also called as the Interconnected network; which
is a worldwide system of computer networks.
•The Internet is known to be the biggest world-wide
communication network of computers.
•The Internet is a network, or system, that connects millions of
computers worldwide.
EVOLUTION OF THE INTERNET
• January 1, 1983 is considered the official birthday of the Internet.
Prior to this, the various computer networks did not have a standard way to
communicate with each other. A new communications protocol was established
called Transfer Control Protocol/Internetwork Protocol (TCP/IP). (Allow digital
computers to communicate over long distance).
• The Internet was developed by Bob Kahn and Vinton Cerf in the 1970s.
They began the design of what we today know as the “Internet”. ' It was
the result of another research experiment which was called ARPANET,
which stands for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network.
• Computer scientists Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn are credited with
inventing the Internet communication protocols we use today and the
system referred to as the Internet.
• There are known as the “Fathers of the Internet”.
• While Klein rock's experiment proved that a single network between
two computer systems was possible,
Cerf and Kahn’s TCP/I provided
the backbone for an efficient and large
web of interconnected thus the name
“Internet.”

• Computer networks are formed by using nodes and connections (links)
that enable teams to communicate with each other. Each node uses a
network interface card that defines how it interacts with the network.
Each network card has its own numeric address.

HOW DOES THE INTERNET WORKS?
• The Internet simply moves data from one place to another, so
that we can chat, browse and share.
• Data moves over the Internet in a manner called “packet
switching.”
• What packet switching basically does is send your data in
separate pieces – each tagged with your intended destination.
• All data sent over the Internet is translated into pulses of light or
electricity, also called "bits," and then interpreted by the
receiving computer.
How does the Internet
Works?
• Internet is run by No one person, company, organization or
government.
• The Internet is a network of networks
• Each of the separate networks belongs to different companies
and organizations, and they rely on physical serves in different
countries with varying laws and regulations
• It is a globally distributed network comprising many
voluntarily interconnected autonomous networks.
• It operates without a central governing body with each
constituent network setting and enforcing its own policies.
• In theory, the internet is owned by everyone that uses it.
WHO CONTROLS THE INTERNET?
 A smart device
• Ex ; smart phone, Laptop, smart watch, etc.
 Web browser
• Ex ; Google chrome, Microsoft edge, etc.
 ISP(Internet service provider)
• Ex ; Mobitel, Dialog, Hutch etc.
BASIC TOOLS REQUIRED IN
CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET
• The Internet provides different online services. Some examples include:
 Websites
• A collection of billions of webpages that you can view with a web browser is called
a “website”.
We use various soft wares and languages in creating webpages.
Ex ; Note pad++
What is WWW?
• The World wide web is forms with a lot of websites.
• Sir Tim-Berners-Lee invented the world wide web(www).
📰
 What is URL?
• The Uniform Resource Locator is a address of a given unique
resource on the Web.
 WHAT IS A SEARCH ENGINE?
• A search engine is a web-based tool that enables users to locate
information on the World Wide Web.
 WHAT IS A WEB BROWSER?
• Web browser, a browser is a software application used to locate retrieve, and
display content on the World Wide Web; including webpages, images, videos,
and other files.
 E-mail
 Social media
 Internet of things(IOT)
(The most common method of sending and receiving
messages online.)
• E-mail, in full electronic mail, messages
transmitted and received by digital
computers through a network.
• Websites and apps that allow that allow
people to share comments, photos,
videos, audio, etc.
• The Internet of Things describes the network of
physical objects “things” that are embedded with
sensors, software, and other technologies
TYPES OF THE INTERNET
•There are mainly two types of internet.
Internet
The age-old
dial-up internet
connection
Broadband
• which has become
almost irrelevant
today.
• Broadband covers all the
different types of internet
connection types that we will be
discussing and includes DSL,
Cable, Fiber Optic, and Satellite.
IMPORTANCE OF THE INTERNET
• Allows people to improve the quality
of their life.
• Uses of the Internet in Education.
• to Speed Up Daily Tasks. .
• Online shopping
• Internet for Research & Development.
• Business Promotion and Innovation.
• Communication.
• Digital Transactions.
• Money Management.
• Entertainment
• Contains Massive Information
USES OF INTERNET
Advantages
&
Disadvantages
of the
Internet
• Connection.
• Communication.
• Convenience.
• Online Shopping
• Access to Information.
• Education.
• Entertainment.
• Information, knowledge, and learning
• Address, mapping, and contact information
Advantages of the Internet
• Addiction, time-waster, and causes distractions.
• Bullying, trolls, stalkers, and crime.
• Spam and advertising.
• violent images.
• Never being able to disconnect from work.
• Identity theft, hacking, viruses, and cheating.
• Affects focus and patience.
• Occurring eye pain because of looking at smart device’s screen for a
long time
Disadvantages of the Internet
SAFE USE OF THE INTERNET
• Protect Your Personal Information With Strong Passwords.
• Install Anti-Virus.
• Keep Personal Information Private, Do not share with others.
• Make Sure Your Devices Are Secure.
• Pay Attention to Software Updates.
• Be Careful About Public Wi-Fi.
• Set Up Two-Factor Authentication.
• Back Up Your Personal Data.
