It's is the process by which a carrier wave is altered in such a way
that it is also to carry information on it.
There are three basic methods to do this:
• Amplitude Modulation (AM)
• Frequency Modulation (FM)
• Phase Modulation (PM)
Modulation
In amplitude Modulation (AM), the amplitude of the carrier wave
is varied in proportion to the message signal, and the other
factors like frequency and phase remain constant.

In Amplitude Modulation (AM), Modulation index is defined as the
measure of extent of amplitude variation about an un modulated
maximum carrier
• Very simple to implement
• AM signals are reflected by the earth
from the ionosphere layer
• Low bandwidth
• Low cost
• More power is required
• Data loss
• AM detectors are sensitive to noise
Advantages of AM
Disadvantages of AM
Application of Amplitude Modulation
• Used to transmit the signal over, long distances
• Used for radio transmission
• It's also applied in two-way communication for air
traffic control
