Goals of the Method..
3. The Method
The Method is an attempt to
standardize the structure of a model
in order to
maximize shared understanding of
the diagram.
4. The goals of Method :
• Completeness :
• Clarity :
• Shareability between business and IT :
• Structural consistency :
These principles of “good BPMN” are the goals of the Method.
5. Hierarchical Top-Down Modeling
The Method describes a
hierarchical top-down
modeling style. But what
does that mean, and
why is it recommended ?
6. Hierarchical Vs Flat process Models
• Hierarchical means
graphically representing the
end-to-end model as a set of
linked process
diagrams representing
distinct process levels.
A flat process model places all
steps of the process, even the
finest details, in a single
diagram. If subprocesses are
used at all – and sometimes
they are not – they are shown
expanded “inline,”.
7. A key concept in the
Method is the notion of
end state.
End States
Matching end state and gateway
labels creates a persistent visual
link between parent and child-level
diagrams that makes the logic
traceable from the top level
down even if the viewer is
unfamiliar with the process or its
terminology.
8. Step 1: Determine process scope
• How does the process start?
• What determines when it is complete?.
• What does each instance of the process represent?
• Are there different ways that the process could end?
9. Step 2: The high level map
This is simply an enumeration
of the major activities of the process.
• Finalize order.
• Acquire car from local dealer.
• Acquire car from factory.
• Prepare car for delivery.
• Arrange financing.
• Close and deliver.
• Handle order cancellation.
15. Method Recap
1. Agree on process scope.
2. Enumerate major activities in a high-level map.
3. Create top-level BPMN diagram.
4. Expand each top-level subprocess in a child-level
diagram.
5. Add business context by drawing message flows.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with additional nested levels,
if any.
