To understand the meaning and functions of wholesaler
Wholesaler, retailer, assembling, dispersion, grading
Wholesaler is a person who buys goods in large quantities from the producers and sells them in small
quantities to the retailers.
Retailer is the person who buys goods in bulk quantities from the wholesalers and sell them in small
quantities to the consumers.
The wholesaler collects goods from different manufactures.
The goods assembled from manufactures are kept in stock in warehouses till they are sold to the
retailers.
The wholesaler takes the goods from the factories to his own warehouse from there to the retail stores.
The products assembled from manufactures and kept in store are distributed to various retailers who are
located over a wide area.
The wholesaler undertakes sorting of the products on the basis of quality and packs accordingly.

Meaning of wholesaler
A wholesaler is a person who buys
goods in large quantities from the
producers and sell them in small quantities
to the retailers.
Teacher welcomed the students and introduce the
topic with the help of previous knowledge of students
Teacher explain the meaning of wholesaler with the
help of example.
Eg: Mr. Raju buy goods in large quantity from a
manufacturer. He deals in wholesale trade.
The wholesaler buys goods from producer and sell
them in small quatities to the retailer.
Then teacher explain the meaning of retailer.

RETAILER
1. Assembling
• A wholesaler buys goods in bulk from different manufacturers and
keeps them at one place.
• He collects goods from several places much in advance of
demand.
• He may also import goods from foreign countries.
Retailer is the person who buys goods in
large quantities from the wholesalers and
sell them in small quantities to the
consumers.
As a wholesaler what are the functions or activities
carried down by Mr. Raju?
Assembling denotes buying goods in bulk from
different manufactures and keeps them at one place.

2. Warehousing or storage
• Time gap between production and consumption of goods. A
wholesaler stores goods in his warehouse
• . He stabilizes prices of the goods by adjusting the supply with the
demand.
• He creates time utility.
3. Dispersion
•A wholesaler distributes the assembled goods among a large number of
retailers scattered at different places.
•He sells goods in small quantities according to the choice of retailers.
•This is known as 'breaking of bulk'.
The wholesaler purchase goods from manufacturers
are kept in stock in warehouse till they are sold to the
retailers.
Dispersion means the distribution of assembled
goods to the retailers

Wholesaler may employ his own vans or hire vehicles for carrying the
goods on account of bulk purchases.
5. Financing
•The wholesaler provides credit facilities to the retailers and
manufacturers.
•Give advance to the manufacturers
6.Risk -bearing:
•A wholesaler assumes the risk of damage to goods.
•changes in demand and bad debts.
• loss of change in prices
• deterioration in quality,
• pilferage,
• Theft

The wholesaler takes the goods from the factories to
his own warehouse and from ther to the retail stores.
For this purpose he may use his own vehicles.
The wholesaler finances the manufacturer by making
cash purchase and also provide credit facility to
retailers.
The wholesaler has to bear the risk in the process of
distribution of goods.
Grading and Packing:
• Classify the assembled goods into different grades,
• Pack them into small lots
• Put their own trademarks or brand names.
• They perform the functions of grading, packing and branding.
The wholesaler undertakes sorting of the products on
the basis of quality .
Last teacher shows the entire function in a slide.

Shah agencies, Calicut buys different brands
of sweets and biscuits from leading companies
in bulk quantities and distribute them in their
vehicles to various shops in Kerala. Identify
the nature o trading activity undertaken by
shah agencies. Also state any five functions of
such a trade.
Teacher ask the question to the students.
The teacher provide the follow up activity.

Retailer is the person who buys goods in bulk quantities from the wholesalers and sell them in small quantities to the consumers. The wholesaler collects goods from different manufactures. The goods assembled from manufactures are kept in stock in warehouses till they are sold to the retailers. The wholesaler takes the goods from the factories to his own warehouse from there to the retail stores. The products assembled from manufactures and kept in store are distributed to various retailers who are located over a wide area. The wholesaler undertakes sorting of the products on the basis of quality and packs accordingly.
