Principles of Learning Assessment
Teaching Behavior of the Teacher/
Learning Behavior of the Learner as
Proof of the Application of the
Principle of Learning
1. Assessment is an integral part of the
teaching-learning process.
1. The teacher gave oral questions in order
to check whether or not her learners had
understood the lesson.
2. Assessment tool /activity should match
with performance objective.
2. The teacher let the students solve math
problems on the board. It was used to
assess how quick they can solve the
mathematical problems.
3. The results of assessment must be fed
back to the learners.
3. The teacher let the students check their
assignments and after such, returned the
papers to the owners for the purpose of
letting her students know their scores.
After, the teacher collected the papers for
recording purpose.
4. Teachers must consider learners’
learning styles and multiple intelligences
and so must come up with a variety of ways
of assessing learning.
4. I believe the teacher assigned topics
ahead of time to be reported since there
were two groups of reporters which
rendered their reports. Also, the teacher
employed variety of learning assessment
such as quiz, oral participation, and the
like.
5. Give some positive feedback along with
not so good ones.
5. I observed that the teacher had given
positive praises even their answers were
not exactly right. In some manner, she tried
to correct it without offending the learners.
6. Emphasize on self-assessment. 6. The teacher did not employ such
learning assessment principles. However, I
believe in future teaching, she will apply it.
7. Assessment of learning should never be
used as punishment or as disciplinary
measure.
7. The teacher did not give quiz that was
not announced prior to the class session.
8. Emphasize on real world application that
favors realistic performances over out-of-
context drills.
8. The teacher integrated real-life
situations as part of the lesson. It was to
concretize the theory they had discussed. It
was to test whether or not they had instilled
and comprehended fully the lesson.
9. Results of learning assessment must be
communicated regularly to parents.
9. The teacher let the parents sign the
quiz/assignment papers of the students as
proof that the parents had seen the results
of quiz/assignment.

My Analysis
Principles of Learning Assessment
Possible Consequence if Principle is
NOT Observed
1. Assessment is an integral part of
the teaching-learning process.
Teaching-Learning process will be of no
use or teaching is useless and meaningless.
2. Assessment tool /activity should
match with performance objective.
Objectives will not be achieved and
teaching would be a dull one.
3. The results of assessment must be
fed back to the learners.
Students will not know their scores and
cannot assess themselves.
4. Teachers must consider learners’
learning styles and multiple
intelligences and so must come up
with a variety of ways of assessing
learning.
There will be bias and the feeling of
inequality. Teacher cannot assess the
students fairly due to inappropriate
assessment tool.
5. Give some positive feedback along
with not so good ones.
Students will be offended and be
discouraged to answer future
questions/activities.
6. Emphasize on self-assessment. Students cannot determine their progress
of their strength and weaknesses.
7. Assessment of learning should
never be used as punishment or as
disciplinary measure.
Students may get discouraged and afraid to
the teacher. Students will get low scores
and are traumatized.
8. Emphasize on real world
application that favors realistic
performances over out-of-context
drills.
Students will be very good in theory yet
very poor in actual scenarios. Learning in
not holistically achieved.
9. Results of learning assessment
must be communicated regularly to
parents.
Parents will not be able to follow up the
activities at home. They can lose trust in
the school. They will be in doubts on
whatever grade the teacher will give to the
students.

My Reflections
As a student, I do remember an incident when one of the principles was violated by
my teacher. It was principle 3. Our teacher did not return our papers. We were very curious
about the results but sad to say, he did not return it. In fact, many of our teachers did the
same. It really affected us. We weren’t able to assess ourselves on how well or how bad
we did the exam/quiz. It was indeed a very discouraging and dismaying act of the teacher.
It is necessary to return the papers to our students so that they will be able to know
their scores. Through giving back their papers, we can promote self-assessment and
through it they may overcome their weaknesses and improve their strengths.
