An important purpose to wich translation has
been put for a long time is pedagogic:
translation has been proposed as a means for
learning and teaching a foreign language.

3. Opponents of the use of translation in foreign
language learning claimed that translation into
the foreign language interfered with the natural
process of learning a foreign language.
Learners command of their native language
would suffer due to the confusing co-presence
of foreign language items in their minds.

4. The now dominant cognitive views imply that
translation is a resource which learners can use
for language learning.
Translation can be viewed in a new light as an
activity with a number of advantages:
1-Translation helps in the development of
proficiency by economically and unambiguosly
explaining the meaning of foreign language
items.

5. 2- In exploiting their knowledge of a language they
are already familiar with translation activities,
learners increase their confidence and motivation to
learn a foreign language.
3- Translation promotes explicit knowledge about
the foreign language.
4- Language awareness enhanced by translation
has also broader educational benefits since
promotes cross cultural understanding.
5- Translation activities can be used to develop
communicative competence in a foreign language.

6.  Translation
as Intercultural
communication
In overt translation, intercultural transfer is
explicitly present and so likely to be perceived by
recipients.
The “received view” of translation today is that it is
first and foremost a process of intercultural
change, rather than a kind of cross-linguistic
substitution.

7.  The
nature of the translation
process
One method used in this internal or process
approach to translation is to ask translators what
they are thinking while they are translating. This is
known as thinking aloud or introspection.
One can also ask translators immediately after they
finish translating about difficulties, reasons for
hesitation and delay. This is known as
retrospection.

8.  Corpus
studies in translation
A corpus is a collection of texts, selected and
compiled according to specific criteria.
The use of corpus methods in translation studies
has a number of advantages. It allows us to focus
on language as it is actually used in translations
and so enables us to determine what is probable
and typical in translation as a text type.

9.  Translation
and globalization
Globalization processes have not only han an
impact on world economy and international politics,
they have also dramatically altered the role of
translation in the modern world.
Translation plays an important role in multilingual
news writing and in the provision of tourist
information worldwide.
