BK ID B1523
CREDITS 4
MARKS 60
Note: Answer all questions. Kindly note that answers for 10 marks questions should be
approximately of 400 words. Each question is followed by evaluation scheme.
Question. 1. Discuss the use of alternative energy resources.
Answer: Alternative energy is often referenced as any energy source that is an alternative to fossil
fuel. These alternatives are intended to address concerns about such fossil fuels. For example, they
typically pollute less among other supposed benefits.
The nature of what constitutes an alternative energy source has changedconsiderably over time,as
have controversiesregardingenergyuse.Today,becauseof the varietyof energychoicesanddiffering
goals of their advocates, defining some energy types as "alternative" is highly controversial.
In a general sense, alternative energy as it is currently conceived, is that which is produced or
recovered without the undesirable consequences
Question. 2. Write a long note on the functions of an ecosystem.
Answer: Ecosystem functions are interactive and synergistic rather than discrete (see Framework
Boundaries for more information). Different ecosystem functions contribute to the provision of
different ecosystem services in different quantities or magnitudes. Each ecosystem function can
contribute to more than one ecosystem service, and it takes more than one ecosystem function to
provide any ecosystem service.
2. Question. 3. Write notes on ‘loss of habitat’ and ‘poaching’.
Answer: Loss of habitat
Habitat destructionisthe processin whichnatural habitatis renderedunable tosupportthe species
present. In this process, the organisms that previously used the site are displaced or destroyed,
reducing biodiversity. Habitat destruction by human activity is mainly for the purpose of harvesting
natural resources for industry production and urbanization. Clearing habitats for agriculture is the
principal cause of habitatdestruction.Otherimportantcausesof habitat destructioninclude mining,
logging, trawling and urban sprawl. Habitat destruction is currently ranked as the primary cause of
speciesextinctionworldwide.Itisa processof natural environmental change thatmay be caused by
habitat fragmentation, geological processes,
Question. 4. Write a long note on water pollution. Include its effects
and control measures (not its sources).
Answer:Water pollutionisthe contaminationof waterbodies(e.g.lakes,rivers,oceans,aquifersand
groundwater). This form of environmental degradation occurs when pollutants are directly or
indirectlydischargedintowaterbodieswithoutadequatetreatmenttoremove harmful compounds.
Water pollutionaffectsthe entire biosphere –plantsandorganismslivinginthese bodiesof water. In
almost all cases the effect is damaging not onlyto individual species and population, but also to the
natural biological communities.
Some people believe pollutionisan inescapable resultof humanactivity:they argue that if we want
to have factories, cities, ships, cars, oil, and coastal resorts,
Question. 5. Discuss resource use and sustainable development.
Answer:Sustainabledevelopmentisaprocessformeetinghumandevelopmentgoalswhilesustaining
the ability of natural systems to continue to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services
uponwhichthe economyandsocietydepend.Whilethe modernconceptof sustainable development
is derived most strongly from the 1987 Brundtland Report, it is rooted in earlier ideas about
sustainable forest management and twentieth century environmental concerns. As the concept
developed, it has shifted to focus
