The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s aimed to end racial segregation and discrimination against African Americans. The 1954 Brown vs Board of Education Supreme Court decision declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional and helped expand civil rights. The 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It was followed by the 1965 Voting Rights Act which protected African American voting rights by banning literacy tests and other measures previously used to disenfranchise black voters. While these laws helped establish legal protections, some argue that continued work is still needed to fully achieve equal rights and overcome systemic discrimination.
