Pratyahara is the fifth of the eight limbs of yoga according to Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. It refers to withdrawing or turning the senses away from external objects. This allows the mind to achieve stability and prepare for deeper meditation. Techniques like pranayama, yoga nidra, trataka candle gazing and connecting/disconnecting with each sense in meditation can help achieve the state of pratyahara and sensory withdrawal. Pratyahara is important for controlling the mind and senses in order to progress along the yoga path towards samadhi.

Abstract:
Asana practice is often seen as the main element of yoga although it is only one part of it. The classical
yoga system, as described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, has eight steps that can be divided into
external and internal yoga
Patanjali defines yoga as having eight components (अष्टाङ्ग aṣṭ āṅga, "eight limbs"): "The eight limbs of
yoga are yama (abstinence), niyama (observances), asana (yoga postures), pranayama (breath control),
pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi
(absorption)
Patanjali describes yoga as “the progressive quieting of the fluctuations of the mind.” He then explains
that through dedicated practice and the cultivation of detachment, we will stop identifying with the
thoughts, feelings, and sensations that can cause us so much emotional pain—and we will open to an
experience of our true self.
Yoga is the neutralization of ego-directed feelings, because once these become stilled, the yogi realizes
that he is, and that he has always been, one with the Infinite – that his awareness of this reality was
limited only by his infatuation with limitation
As the fifth of the eight limbs, pratyahara occupies a central place. Some yogis include it among the
outer aspects of yoga, others with the inner aspects. Both classifications are correct, for pratyahara is
the key between the outer and inner aspects of yoga; it shows us how to move from one to the other
Pratyahara itself is termed asYoga,as it is the most important limb in Yoga Sadhana.

Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda Raja yoga chapter 8 Raja Yoga In BriefRavi Ramakrishnan
Swami Vivekananda (12 January 1863 – 4 July 1902), born Narendranath Datta, was an Indian Hindu monk, a chief disciple of the 19th-century Indian mystic Ramakrishna. He was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world and is credited with raising interfaith awareness, bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion during the late 19th century He was a major force in the revival of Hinduism in India, and contributed to the concept of nationalism in colonial India. Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. He is perhaps best known for his speech which began, "Sisters and brothers of America ...,"in which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893.
Born into an aristocratic Bengali family of Calcutta, Vivekananda was inclined towards spirituality. He was influenced by his Guru, Ramakrishna Deva, from whom he learnt that all living beings were an embodiment of the divine self; therefore, service to God could be rendered by service to mankind. After Ramakrishna's death, Vivekananda toured the Indian subcontinent extensively and acquired first-hand knowledge of the conditions prevailing in British India. He later travelled to the United States, representing India at the 1893 Parliament of the World Religions. Vivekananda conducted hundreds of public and private lectures and classes, disseminating tenets of Hindu philosophy in the United States, England and Europe. In India, Vivekananda is regarded as a patriotic saint and his birthday is celebrated in India as National Youth Day.

3 bodies concept of yoga by Dr Shivam mishra.pptxDr Shivam Mishra
According to yoga philosophy, a person has not only the physical body but two more bodies which happens within the outer physical body. It’s called the concept of Sharira Traya or three bodies in yoga.
Yoga believes that three bodies must be treated for a complete healing process rather than just the physical body. Yoga, Advaita Vedanta, Tantra, and Shaivism all adhere to the Three Bodies Doctrine, which is a fundamental principle in Indian philosophy and religion.

Mantra yoga is one of the 6 branches of yoga which includes chanting of potential syllables, verses, or Vedic hymns to attain one of the limbs of yoga, i.e. Pratyahara. Like other forms of yoga, the aim of mantra yoga is to attain ultimate salvation.
Getting into the terminology of “Mantra Yoga”, divides it into two words, “Mantra” and “Yoga” which are intradisciplinary aspects. This is so because mantra and yoga complement each other and that is the main intention behind this practice.
Yoga is practiced to unite with the supreme soul and that’s only possible if you can control the wandering of mind and reach higher states of consciousness. This is achieved through chanting and repeating the mantra over and over again, similarly, chanting is performed only with the same intention of yoga.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

3. Outline
• Gentle stretching
• Pranayama practice
• What is Pratyahara?
• Outside-in approach
• Inside-out approach
• Sensory overstimulation
• How to achieve Pratyahara
• Candle gazing (Trataka)
• Pratyahara in Bhagavad Gita
• Yoga Nidra (relaxation)
• Pratyahara meditation
4. What is Pratyahara?
• Pratyahara is fifth of the eight limbs – yama,
niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara,
dharana, dhyana, samadhi
• One of the most important and yet, the least
discussed, taught or practiced limbs of yoga!
• Most often referred to as an “external limb”
along with yamas, niyamas, asana and
pranayama
• Yamas and Niyamas (truth, non-violence,
purity etc.) help purify the mind
5. What is Pratyahara (cont.)
• Asanas strengthen the body and make it free
of disease
• Pranayama energizes the vital body, calms the
mind and aids in controlling the senses
• To achieve stability, mind needs to be cut off
from the five senses
• Mind is then ready for meditation and
samadhi
6. What is Pratyahara? (cont.)
• When separated from their corresponding
objects, the organs follow, as it were, the nature
of the mind -Sutra 2.54
• That brings supreme control of the sense organs -
Sutra 2.55
• Pratyahara = "prati" (against/away) + "ahara"
(food/inputs) = withdrawing away from the
sense inputs.
• Three levels of food:
– Physical food giving energy thru five elements
– Sense impressions thru the five senses
– Mental impressions through associations
7. Pratyahara: outside-in Approach
• Senses are withdrawn away from their respective
objects
• They remain in their own natural state
• Once the senses are not in contact with their
objects, the mind also has no contact with them.
It then stays in its own natural state
• The senses then seem to resemble the state of
the mind.
• Such a control of the senses and of the mind is
called Pratyahara.
8. Pratyahara: inside-out Approach
• When stilled through vairagya (detachment)
and other practices, mind is no longer
interested in the five senses
• Senses continue to receive input thru the
sense organs (eyes, ears etc)
• Mind is unwilling to retrieve these inputs
• The senses, unable to distract the mind,
appear as if they are following the mind
9. Sensory Overload
• Senses constantly bombarded with attractions
thru the media – TV, newspaper, internet etc
• It becomes hard to control mind and senses
• Senses begin to control the mind, our
thoughts and behavior patterns
• Mind can benefit from a “sensory fast” similar
to the body benefitting from a “food fast”
10. Pratyahara Techniques
• Pranayama – senses follow prana (vital life force) so we energize
prana thru pranayama
– Deep, slow breathing techniques calm the nerves, mind
– Duirng Kumbhaka, the yogi withdraws his awareness from the five
senses
• Karma Pratyahara (control of actions) – selfless service, offering all
actions and fruits thereof to Lord
• Focus on one sense impression – blue sky, ocean, tree etc (like
mono-diet can heal the body)
• Creating positive impressions – meditate on nature, visiting
temples, offering incense, flowers etc
• Visualization techniques
• In the practice of Yoga Nidra, we are able to turn the senses inward
11. Pratyahara Techniques (cont.)
• Practice Yoni Mudra – symbolically shutting off
the senses and breathing out with humming
sound – after pranayama
• Trataka (gazing) – normally practiced with a
lighted candle
• Pratyahara meditation – connecting with and
withdrawing from senses one at a time
12. Pratyahara in Bhagavad Gita
• the five senses are compared to the five horses of
a chariot:
– The mind is the reins
– the soul (the atman) is the passenger
– In order to keep the chariot (the human being) on
course, it is important to keep the horses in control.
• Just like a turtle which withdraws its limbs away,
the yogi, by turning senses away from their
objects, attains steady wisdom
13. Pratyahara in Bhagavad Gita (cont.)
• When one thinks of objects, attachment is
born which leads to the following “ladder of
destruction”:
– attachment →desires → anger → delusion → loss
of memory → loss of intellect and discriminatory
power → total annihilation.
• One who is self-controlled, even though
moving among the objects, attains peace
since the senses remain under control and
free from attraction
14. Pratyahara – Grades of Control
• Not being addicted to the five senses.
• Reaching out and gaining experience of external objects which are
not prohibited by the scriptures
• Experiencing the objects only as a result of free will, not drawn in
by the objects
• This experience of an object can lead to full knowledge of the
object without causing pleasure or pain as we have no likes or
dislikes for external objects. Pleasure and pain are the results of
ego-identification.
• Completely eliminating any contact with the objects is final
controllability (talked about in this sutra) and comes about when
the mind is fully one-pointed
• Any stage other than the last stage can take us back to a state of no
control over senses. Even a snake expert would not sleep next to a
venomous snake thinking that he knows how to control snakes.
15. Closing Remarks
• Pratyahara is a critically important limb on the
path to meditation and samadhi
• Techniques like pranayama, yoga nidra and
‘pratyahara meditation’ help attain the state
of pratyahara (sense withdrawal)
• It is easier to control the mind when it is not
distracted by the senses and their objects
