Too Many Stakeholders:
The system has too many stakeholders – teachers, students, administrators and even the Government. While the main focus in on the ones who education is being dispensed to, the children, even the imparters, that is the teachers, aren’t happy with a lot of instability in regulations, unwarranted discipline imposed on them. And, in that bid to please all the stakeholders, and failing at it, the essence of education and literacy is lost. It’s the age-old saying of “Too many cooks spoil the broth”.

We need better policies, more interactive classroom approach, more student-friendly learning methodology, and better study models which would focus on holistic and comprehensive learning, instead of the flawed and narrow ‘let’s cram and vomit in exam’ models.

Education Start-Ups: The statistics clearly show how important it is for our literacy rates to get better. Many online education start-ups are working for the literacy rates to soar. They focus on building interest in the formative years and, hence, target the younger age groups.
Follow the Delhi Model: The Delhi government’s model on budget allocation for education is a solid example of prioritising right. Their programme ‘Mission Buniyaad’ was aimed to beat the poor literacy rate. Today, students are at a level playing field thanks to their exemplary programmes which have also got world recognition. Today, the Delhi Chief Minister’s son and a tailor’s son are going to be studying together at IIT. It’s not about the class divide, but providing equal access to resources- that’s the main ‘end’ a government must seek to achieve through the ‘means’ of these policies.

Budget Allocation/ Human Capital Formation:
If you really want to know the priorities of a government, instead of going to their manifesto, check their budget allocation. One major reason our literacy rates have remained low or extremely stagnant is that there is very little allocation in the Budget.
Too Many Stakeholders:
The system has too many stakeholders – teachers, students, administrators and even the Government. While the main focus in on the ones who education is being dispensed to, the children, even the imparters, that is the teachers, aren’t happy with a lot of instability in regulations, unwarranted discipline imposed on them. And, in that bid to please all the stakeholders, and failing at it, the essence of education and literacy is lost. It’s the age-old saying of “Too many cooks spoil the broth”.
The System Is Outdated:
We need better policies, more interactive classroom approach, more student-friendly learning methodology, and better study models which would focus on holistic and comprehensive learning, instead of the flawed and narrow ‘let’s cram and vomit in exam’ models.
How Can It Get Better?:
Education Start-Ups: The statistics clearly show how important it is for our literacy rates to get better. Many online education start-ups are working for the literacy rates to soar. They focus on building interest in the formative years and, hence, target the younger age groups.
Follow the Delhi Model: The Delhi government’s model on budget allocation for education is a solid example of prioritising right. Their programme ‘Mission Buniyaad’ was aimed to beat the poor literacy rate. Today, students are at a level playing field thanks to their exemplary programmes which have also got world recognition. Today, the Delhi Chief Minister’s son and a tailor’s son are going to be studying together at IIT. It’s not about the class divide, but providing equal access to resources- that’s the main ‘end’ a government must seek to achieve through the ‘means’ of these policies.

- 1. Increasing Employability of Youth By:Youth4Change
- 2. Statistics • Youth population in India is nearly 40% • The unemployment rate per 1,000 population is at 27, while it was 25 two years ago. As on January 1, 2010, the number of unemployed was 9.8 million. By January 1, 2012, it has increased to 10.8 million.
- 3. Statistics • Nearly half the population (49%) is engaged in agriculture, while 24% are working in secondary sector and 27% in tertiary sector. • In rural areas, the unemployment rate for both male and female is almost at the same level, 2%. But, in, urban areas, women are more unemployed than men. The rate is 5% for women and 2% for men.
- 4. Need • To increase employability level of youth • To curb economic disparity • To encourage entrepreneurs • To increase awareness of new methods and technologies
- 6. Vocational Skill • Due to poverty and lack of access to basic quality education, many children in slums drop out from the schools and get engaged in income generating activities. But since they are unskilled, they end up being petty labourers, vendors or collect garbage on and off streets. • Aiming at ending this vicious cycle of poverty and providing vocational skills to adolescents and youth especially girls to increase their chances of finding a respectable profession and becoming a contributing member of the society.

Technical Skills • Reading Technical Books • Reading online Tutorials • Industry and College Partnerships e.g. Involving police for imparting cyber security courses • Learning courses according to the geographical terrain like people from Himachal Pradesh and J&K should be encouraged to take up food processing courses
- 8. Skill Development • Specialized Institutes in the field of Police reforms, forensics, cyber security etc. should be established at least in each state. • Imparting Door-Step training to the rural workforce for empowering small scale industries like handicrafts, etc.
- 9. Across the Globe • Youth must be encouraged to explore various online courses provided by various international universities such as MIT open courseware, EDX, Stanford university online courses.
