Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, 2001
Mid Day Meal Scheme, 2002
Right To Education Act, 2009
INDIA’S POSITION IN WORLD
Largest Illiterate Population In The World. A Study Done In 1990 Estimated
That It Would Take Until 2060 For India To Achieve Universal Literacy At
Then-current Rate Of Progress. The 2011 Census Indicated Decadal Literacy
Growth Of 9.2 Percent, Which Is Slower Then Growth Seen During The
Previous Decade.
World Average Literacy At Present Is 84% Whereas India Having 74.04%
With Male Literacy Rate Is 82.14%, Female 65.46%. The sectors with the
highest allocated budgets are Interest, Defence and Subsidies. Education
remains one of the least valued at 3.5 per cent. India ranks 124th in
literacy rates as per several sources and given the education sector budget
we might not see a rise in rankings this year.
PROBLEMS AND SUGGESTIONS
Problems: Lack of funds, Expensive higher education, Neglect of Indian
languages, Problem of Brain drain, Problem of Brain drain, Mass illiteracy,
Wastage of resources, General education oriented, Problems of primary
education
Suggestions: Government and their bureaucracies will have to free up
institutions, Teacher to student ratio, The teachers need to be paid better,
Indian universities need to internationalise themselves, focus on low capital-
intensive skill-based education. Foreign educational institutions should be
allowed to enter into collaborations with Indian institutions
CONCLUSION
The education system in India has seen many ups and downs, but at the same
time it has produced some brilliant gems, who are raising the flags of India
across globe.
Government of India has prioritised education sector and has taken some of the
major initiatives to provide quality education. Today, the need of the hour is to
effectively implement these initiatives to its maximum extent.
Hence Education is very important to economic development, no economic
development is possible without good education. A balance education system
promotes not only good economic development but productivity and generates
per captia income, Its influence is noticeable at the micro level of an individual
family.
