RCE Greater Portland Youth Network connects local youth through collaborative projects that educate, empower, and engage them for a sustainable future. Some of their 2015-2016 achievements included a blog exploring Portland identity, empowering women through an organization called GirlUp!, holding a virtual youth conference on environmental sustainability, and hosting a community event featuring local organizations. Their 2016-2017 goals are to broaden their local youth network, strengthen global youth connections, achieve more UN sustainability goals, expand past projects, and increase government involvement.

This involves establishing co-engaged learning methodologies where the community helps identify problems to research. Data is collected before and during engagement to analyze the issues and benefits. The roles of community members and how results are defined need consideration. Institutions also must reflect engagement in their policies and prepare staff, while engagement can provide new opportunities for teaching and learning.

RCE Kano provides vocational training programs for young people. Sixty-three trainees graduated from programs in leather works, shoe making, carpentry, automobile mechanics, and plumbing. RCE Kano also teaches girls skills like making detergent, perfume, and soaps. The oneVillage Community Day Presentation was given at 10am on Sept 27, 2009 at the Technology Bldg in Taipei Taiwan. The presentation gives an overview of our work particularly in relation to what the 1st Community Day event was about in July supporting the oneVillage Ecotour Service and Learning Program. As part of this program, 10 students from National Tsing Hua Univ traveled to Ghana for the month of Aug. During their time in Ghana, they shared experiences with each other and the local people, while aiding in various development efforts organized by our affiliate OVF Ghana. We see this as a model development effort that links projects and people with ICT and in many cases supports the development of Open Source solutions in the field.

RCE Greater Portland became a non-profit organization in 2015-2016 which provided benefits like easier funding but also costs like increased paperwork. It established a board of directors and passed bylaws to formalize its governance structure. In 2015-2016, it held numerous educational events on sustainability and built out research initiatives while facing challenges in funding, staff capacity, and diversity goals. Its 2016-2017 action plan focuses on growing its network, securing operations funding, advancing lifelong learning on sustainability, and increasing public awareness of sustainability issues.

Biotechnology applications in agriculture can help improve water security. Advances in embryo technology, cloning, and transgenic animals can lead to smarter livestock farming practices. This includes using techniques like ICSI and embryo transfer to rescue rare and infertile animals or produce livestock with desirable traits. Somatic cell nuclear transfer can also be used to conserve species. Additional biotechnologies such as induced pluripotent stem cells may allow the production of human organs in animals through knockout of specific genes, helping regenerative biomedicine and pharmaceutical production. Overall, smart applications of biotechnology in agriculture can enhance sustainable development and water security.
