YouTube Lesson Strategy
1. Topic- The lesson I will be teaching is about orchestras and what instruments
are in an orchestra. Students will learn about the instruments and gain a
basic knowledge of some orchestral music. This would ideally be for
elementary age students in a basic music class.
2. Learning objectives- Students will be able to name and describe the
instruments that comprise an orchestra. They will be exposed to a few
famous orchestral pieces, such as Night on Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky and
Hoedown by Aaron Copland.

YouTube videos
a. Night on Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky in Fantasia

This video is the piece as it is played during the movie Fantasia. Since
most people have seen Fantasia, it would be fun for the students to
see this clip from the movie.
b. “Hoe-down” from Rodeo by Aaron Copland
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ghjDIXcqwE
This video is the Neponset Valley Orchestra performing “Hoe-down”
from Rodeo by Aaron Copland. The students will be able to see an
orchestra performing this live.

a. San Francisco Symphony Kids

This is a good website as it explains the different families of
instruments, and students can explore all the instruments in an
interactive way. There are also some activities the students can play
around with.
b. The Music Chamber

This website has a lot of classical composers, so the students can look
at the list of different composers and listen to some of the pieces. They
have all the time periods of music history.
4. Lesson Activities
a. I would start by showing the students both youtube videos. After
watching Night on Bare Mountain, I would have the students discuss
how the music made them feel and how music brings out emotions.
After “Hoe-down” I would discuss some of the different instruments in
the orchestra and ask which ones they heard in the piece.
b. Students will go to the San Francisco Symphony Kids website and
explore the different instruments and activities on there. This will
help them learn more about orchestras.
c. Then students will find a composer and piece of orchestral music
online from the Music Chamber website and identify which
instruments are being used. They can listen to a few of them and then
present to the class about the composer and piece.

a. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
b. Evaluating music and music performances.
c. Understanding music in relation to history and culture.
Massachusetts Arts Frameworks
a. Critical Response. Students will describe and analyze their own music and
the music of others using appropriate music vocabulary. When appropriate,
students will connect their analysis to interpretation and evaluation.
b. Purposes and Meanings in the Arts. Students will describe the purposes for
which works of dance, music, theatre, visual arts, and architecture were and
are created, and, when appropriate, interpret their meanings.
