This document evaluates the two music genres that apply to the song "Mr. Blue Sky" - art rock and pop rock. It discusses how art rock developed from 1960s rock and roll and was popular in the 1970s, making example music videos hard to find. For pop rock, it provides definitions and notes its popularity in the 1960s-1970s and 1990s-2000s. The document concludes that researching modern rock music video examples like "Fluorescent Adolescent" can help modernize the genres for a younger audience, despite taking elements from alternative and indie rock rather than the original genres.

1. Genre
In this PowerPoint I will be evaluating
the two music genres that apply to
my music video.

2. Art rock
• The first music genre that applies to my song ‘Mr Blue Sky’ is art rock or
progressive rock. This genre of much features a very broad range of
different types of music, but when it first arose it began as music which
developed on from the initial rock and roll of the 1960s. From then on it
reached its high point in the 1970’s however fell silent again until another
rise to power in the 1990s through bands such as Roxy Music, Jethro Tull,
Electric Light Orchestra, 10cc, the Moody Blues, Emerson, Lake and Palmer
and Procol Harum. For this reason I had a great deal of issue with trying to
find example music videos for this music style as it mainly featured music
from a long time ago when music videos were fairly rare and under
developed. So when it came to textual analysis's, I looked for rock music
videos which related to my video idea, but not necessarily matching in
genre. For example I used indie rock music video Fluorescent Adolescent
as textual analysis as it included the iconic character of clowns similar to
mine. This links to Altman's genre theory as it shows how genre needs
hybridisation to survive.

3. Pop rock
• The second music genre that applies to my song ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ is
Pop rock. This once again is a genre that has existed for a long time
and has been defined as an ‘upbeat variety of rock music
represented by artists such as Elton John, Paul McCartney, The
Everly Brothers, Rod Stewart, Chicago, and Peter Frampton.“-L. Starr
and C. Waterman . This is certainly the kind of thing that I want my
music video to reflect and I believe that it will do so effectively with
its colourful character types etc. Pop rock music, also known as
bubble-gum music, had two distinct periods of popularity: 1960s-
1970s and 1990s-2000s. So similar to art rock, this genre of music is
apart of a previously popular era of music and isn’t really current.
However this may not even be relevant if you see precedent in
Altman's theory the there is ‘no such thing as genre’. This means
that there is no longer any pure genre and that there is only hybrid
genres with mixtures of different elements. Overall however I
believe that my upbeat and cheery idea for my music video so far, is
conventional of this genre of music.

4. My Music video
• I believe that as these genres time in the limelight was not
in present day, the best way to research this genres music
videos is through more modern and popular examples of
modern day rock music videos such as Fluorescent
adolescent. By doing this I will hopefully modernise the
music genres art rock and pop rock and real in the younger
audience that is my target demographic. This may take
away from the recognisability of the genre of music Mr.
Blue Sky belongs to as it will be conventions of alternative
rock (Too close) and indie rock (Fluorescent Adolescent)
that will feature, however these are still rock and therefore
I believe that this hybridisation will only aid in my targeting
of my audience.
