Dear Parent and Guardians of Year 5
Reflection on previous Unit of Inquiry
Year 5 would like to welcome you to the final unit of inquiry for this academic year. Over
the year we have explored topics such as “access to water”, “children rights” and
“expressing ourselves through culture and creativity.” We recently investigated
inventions that improve our everyday lives.
As we move forward, we start to look our leadership skills that lead to making personal
choices,in prepartion for the exhibition and Year 6.
New unit of inquiry
Our final unit of inquiry falls under the organising theme of: How we organise ourselves.
The Central idea: Personal styles and choices create patterns of interactions within
communities
The students will inquire into:
For this inquiry the children with create and develop their own lines of inquiry in
connection to the central idea
Skills: Student will explore and select skills that best suit them in connection to their
personal lines of inquires.
Learner Profile and Attitudes: Student will explore and select learner profiles and
attitudes that best suit reflect their personal lines of inquires.
Social Studies/Science strands: Social organization, Communities, Interaction and
Culture

Language skills will include:
Listening & Speaking: Express thoughts, ideas and opinions and discuss them,
respecting contributions from others
Writing: Continue with developing writing skills and understanding grammar in their
writing
Spelling: Learning new words and reviewing the spelling words and sounds covered
during the year Reading: Independent reading and guided reading groups
Students should be reading at least 20 – 30 minutes every day
Math skills will include:
Measurement: Continue with Measuring Time (Time Elpase and reading and
understanding analogue and digital time)
Number: Continued practice with all number operations (Addition,Division,Multiplication
and Subtraction) Introduction to Fractions (adding and subtracting basic
fractions)
Personal, social and physical education (PSPE)
IDENTITY: Culture
Through our culture and understanding others we can demonstrate a positive attitude
towards reaching
our goals.
ACTIVE LIVING: Responsibilities
Explore different roles that can be linked to create sequences.

INTERACTION: Communication
Celebrate the accomplishment of the group. Discuss and set goals for group
interactions.
French: (Ms. Catherine Mousseau)
During this unit, we will continue our exploration of Paris and talk about its monuments.
The students will be asked to do a small presentation on the monument of their choice.
They will work on their research skills: collecting, recording and organizing data. They
will also develop their communication skills:listening, speaking and presenting facts.
They will also learn how to present their nationality, country of origin, country of
residence and the languages they speak.
In connection with the unit of inquiry they will be working on in their homeroom, we will
also explore the topic of exchange, and we will talk more specifically about euro as a
currency. We will learn how to recognize euros and how to count them and use them.
Students will participate in a game in which they will be asked to buy items with euros in
different types of shops. We will finish the term with revisions of the different topics
covered this year.
Portuguese: (Mr. Naftal Chivure)
In connection with the unit of inquiry they will be working with their homeroom teacher,
we will also explore the topic of exchange, and we will talk more specifically about euro
as a currency. We will learn how to recognize euros and how to count them and use
them. They will also do a shopping role play using Euros.
The year 5 will, also, revise different topics at the same time: Parts of the body; Clothes;
Daily routine activities; numbers and the months of the year; time;clothes; numbers and
days of the week.
ICT: (Mr. Danai Maramba)
Students will practice their word processing skills by creating and accessing different
shared documents for their classes. They will continue interacting in Google Classroom
(a virtual) to submit and share their work and practise Digital Citizenship skills.

Whilst communicating respectfully about our social disposition with each other we will be
looking at meaningful exchange of art.
Physical Education: (Mr. Fernando Beukes)
In unit 6 learners will explore net games. With the recent launch of the ‘Cool Volley’
development program in Namibia, they will start to learn and develop the fundamentals
of volleyball. Learner outcomes expected are: exhibit effective decision-making
processes in the application of skills.
Supporting your child’s learning at home
● For extra math support, the students can visit www.myimaths.com,
www.tabletest.com and http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/math.htm daily work
on operations, times tables and other skills/concepts.
● Students should read every day for at least 20 minutes
● Spelling words each week will be given on a weekly basis, followed by a
spelling test.
● Students can expect a Maths quiz and/or activities on the concepts covered.
