A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Editor's Notes
Web Client Each V4.0 licensed Xpressions mailbox user also has use of a Web Client for mailbox access if enabled for the user by the system administrator. This means that a voice-only licensed user can experience the benefits of a GUI presentation of voice messages. Benefits include: “Seeing” your voicemail at a glance and selecting your message of interest by Urgent flag, New or Saved messages, Date/time stamp, Caller ID or Xpressions user id, Message length
Looking back to the strategic objective for 4.0 to get the PhoneMail installed base to make the move, here’s one feature which gives the voice-only user a reason to want to migrate. And so far, over 75% of Xpressions users have been Voice-Only. The Web Mail Client gives a “taste of unified messaging” to the voice-only users. They can now see their voice messages on their PC, and select which ones they want to listen to first. They can save messages to their hard drive. And they can email their voice messages. And…. the Web Client is available for all users with no extra license needed.
We listen to our customers feedback! Much of the content included in this release is based on customer requests! Trusted Number Access When enabled by the System Administrator (via system parameter), users can configure up to 3 trusted numbers in the Web Assistant. When the user calls into Xpressions via direct or callback access, Xpressions detects the calling party ID information, compares it with the trusted numbers configured for the user, and if a match is found the user is allowed to log in without entering mailbox number and password. If the user calls the Direct Access number from a trusted number, he/she can just press [#] to be directed immediately to his mailbox’s Home State in the TUI menu. If the user calls the Callback Access number, Xpressions immediately grants access and begins to playback any voice messages in a continuous playback mode.
One of the interesting statistics that we’ve learned from our years of experience with Xpressions unified messaging is that we almost never ship a system which has 100% UM users. Every enterprise has some voice-only users. In fact, we do ship Xpressions systems which are 100% voice-only. Therefore, a key focus area for our latest V4.0 release was to improve the user experience for voice-only users. We recognized that we had to provide good reasons for PhoneMail users to want to move to voice-only Xpressions even if they were going to remain voice-only users. FOR EXAMPLE: After successful login, get “XpressMenu” prompts : “ You have xx new messages” “ To Listen, push 3 Record, push 1 Change Answering options, push 8” All main menu keys are still active, but Xpressions only prompts for most-used functions After timeout if no key pressed, main menu is presented Trusted Number Access When enabled by the System Administrator (via system parameter), users can configure up to 3 trusted numbers in the Web Assistant. For the real “road warrior”, we’ve combined Trusted Number with Continuous Playback. If the user calls the Callback Access number, Xpressions immediately grants access and begins to playback any voice messages in a continuous playback mode (like an answering machine).
We listen to our customers feedback! Much of the content included in this release is based on customer requests! Updated Abbreviated Prompts For users who are familiar enough with the system TUI to choose abbreviated prompts, we have further streamlined the prompts, making them less wordy and eliminating redundancy. For example, only the most commonly used functions are presented at first login: You have XX new messages” (XX = the total number of NEW messages, all types) To Listen push 3, Record push 1, Change Answering options push 8” (All menu keys are still active even though Xpressions is only prompting for these.) If the user does not press a key within a configurable time period (default is 5 seconds), then the normal TUI Home State menu is played. Continuous Playback “On the Fly” When in the TUI Home State, if a user presses [5] to listen (instead of [3]), his/her unread voice messages are played back one after the other with no interaction required from the user (like an answering machine). The playback can be interrupted at any time by the [*] key to process a message. The priority order of message playback is: myXpressions folder urgent voice messages, myXpressions folder regular voice messages, Inbox folder urgent voice messages, Inbox folder regular voice messages. Group Mailbox A single user mailbox (1 user license) may be shared by multiple extensions (up to 99). The mailbox needs only one set of greetings and is administered as a single mailbox. Only one user can access the mailbox at any one time. However, the mailbox can be configured to send message waiting notification to all of the extensions. Improved Message Playback Control During playback of a voice message on the TUI, the user can change the speed of the message playback via the [9] key (to speed up) and [7] key (to slow down).
We listen to our customers feedback! Much of the content included in this release is based on customer requests! Simplified Caller ID Presentation A new capability in V4.0 called NCO (number conversion object) allows the administrator to adjust the way telephone numbers are presented to the user. For example, the caller ID in the message header can be presented with or without country code and/or area code. Enhanced Handling of Un-Addressed Recorded Voice Messages If a user has recorded or is recording a message and hangs up before addressing the message, Xpressions saves the recording in the “Outgoing Messages” folder. The user can then call back in to address the message and send it.
We listen to our customers feedback! Much of the content included in this release is based on customer requests! New Programmable Shortcuts capability. In the TUI Home State, the [4] key was not being used for anything, so we put it to work. With 4.0, you get to program up to 9 shortcuts (41 to 49). You program them like “Speed dial” sequences in the Web Assistant. Up to 64 characters in the string – gives you the power to be creative in what you program. For instance: Simulate the top level Octel TUI. Simplify the daily recording of Alternate Greeting. Change your mobility target number from cell phone to land line, e.g. Forward calls from desk phone to cell, for example via the TUI (HiPath 4000 integration only). Call to any phone number allowed by switch COS.
