Xeroderma pigmentosum is a rare genetic disorder that causes an inability to repair DNA damage from UV light, resulting in severe sun sensitivity and a high risk of skin cancer at an early age. It is caused by mutations in genes responsible for repairing UV damage to DNA. Patients experience severe sunburn from minimal sun exposure, develop multiple freckles and pigmented lesions as children, and have a very high likelihood of developing skin cancers and other cancers. Management focuses on strict sun avoidance, sun protective clothing, high SPF sunscreens, and frequent skin exams to monitor for and treat precancerous lesions and skin cancers early.
