Why was there stalemate on the western front
For the first two months of WWI, both sides engaged in mobile warfare in France and Belgium, but by Christmas 1914 the fighting settled into static trench warfare along the Western Front. An initial German plan to quickly defeat France through Belgium failed at the Battle of the Marne in September. This led to a "Race to the Sea" as both sides tried to outflank each other, ultimately resulting in a line of opposing trenches from the North Sea to the Swiss border. In 19th century Spain, there were three main social classes divided by wealth: the upper class of nobility and wealthy merchants, the middle class of small landowners and skilled workers, and the lower working class of agricultural laborers and industrial workers. The lower classes suffered from very low wages, long work hours of 14-16 hours per day without benefits or safety protections. This led to social conflicts and unrest, as workers began organizing labor movements and associations to demand better conditions. Anarchist and socialist ideas spread among worker groups in the late 1800s, with the formation of groups like the FORE in 1870 which advocated for workers' rights.
Isabel II
Queen Isabel II came to the throne as an infant in 1833 but faced disputes from the Carlists who refused to accept a female monarch. This led to civil wars. During her troubled reign from 1843 to 1868 she had ten children but many died young. Political instability grew as new parties emerged demanding reforms. In 1868 she was deposed in the Glorious Revolution and formally abdicated in 1870, leading to a period of provisional governments and instability until a democratic monarchy was established in 1871.
XIX century in Spain
The desamortización laws in Spain took land away from the Church and municipalities and sold it at auction, leading to the formation of large estates called latifundios. While some agricultural improvements occurred, the laws did not significantly stimulate the economy as the wealthy invested in land instead of other enterprises. The industrial revolution also had a limited impact in Spain due to a small middle class, lack of initiative, and political instability. The mining industry expanded, but commerce developed slowly due to limited domestic demand and loss of colonial export markets.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education

Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable.
