The land that UNIT now occupies has a long history dating back to the 15th century. It was originally owned by a local tavern owner and later became a military compound with barracks, training facilities, and repair shops. From the late 19th century until 1993, it was home to a large motorcycle factory. UNIT plans to redevelop the area in stages, starting by reusing existing warehouses for pop-up food vendors, fitness areas, shops, and more to activate the space. The full redevelopment will include offices, housing, education, and cultural amenities to create a mixed-use district.

2. HISTORY
The piece of land located more or less where UNIT is now was mentioned in
documents in 1401. The land was owned by the local taproom lady and it was
sold over to Dominican convent. During the years the place usage altered to the
military compound.
Dating from the second half of the XIX century there were military barracks,
shooting range, church and drill square. First tram arrives there in 1895. Until the
II world war buildings undergo to the army and some of them are changed to the
repair houses and warehouses for tanks and armored cars. The place is called
Syreckie Tabory. Right after the War Syreckie Tabory factory receives new
machines and the repair place is transformed into the motor bikes factory.
The continuous production lasts until the year 1993 year. Factory is huge it
consists of several production buildings, warehouses and additional office and
social buildings.

UNIT is planned to be a long haul project. Therefore it has to be considered into stages. I
stage is happening right now. Some buildings are already built, while the others are being
prepared for the execution.
To create whole UNIT site attractive from the very beginning, we propose to reuse the
existing warehouses standing on the next stages land. Warehouses are being used
chaotically now. There are some stock, wholesale shops and so.
The idea is to make some basic refurbishments inside the warehouses, and incorporate
some new functions there, like street food BARS, RESTAURANTS, FITNESS LOUNGES,
CLIMBING WALLS, SHOPS, FLOWER MARKET, SKATING PATHS.
Some works have to be made, floor levelling, windows sealing, adding new paint covers
to walls and structure columns, than we can put inside independent free standing
INTERNAL BOXES to make some TOILETS, KITCHEN BACK-OFFICES, CHANGE ROOMS etc.
Main function can be just realized in the main warehouse space, making it vibrant,
colourful, and interactive.

11. Locating schools, universities, research
laboratories in new modern district,
elevates the rank of space. Gathering
people to talk to each other, to work not
only with colleagues, but also with people

PEOPLE
Agora, forum, market square, sport arenas,
walking avenues, political rally – people are
gathering form many reasons. UNIT urban layout
provides squares and spaces for all types of
meetings. Some of them will be completely open,
to be utilized by everyone, but for example the
residential ones will be available only for the
residents and their guests.

PLAZA
EVENTS
If I had to compare UNIT plazas to the ancient ones – the EVENT
PLAZA would be much like AGORA. EVENT PLAZA is supposed to
gather people for discussions, rest, eating. Spread around the
plaza, there are going to be special connections, in order to
organized events like concerts, meetings and for example street
food festivals or Christmas fairies.

CULTURAL PLAZA is 3 minutes’ walk from
the EVENT PLAZA, though it will have more
casual, residential atmosphere. CULTURAL
PLAZA is surrounded by residential
buildings, where on the ground floors we
will have some shops, cafe, mini markets,
pharmacies and so on. We propose to locate
a kind of fruit – flowers market there. In the
surrounding building we will have the
cinema, and a multi-functional room to for
the residential community.
