The document provides a treatment for a music video for Selena Gomez's song "Birthday." The treatment describes using props like balloons, presents, and confetti to emphasize the song's theme of partying and celebration. Bright colors and decorations in various shapes and patterns will be used. While the original video was shot in a dark nightclub, this lyrics video will be shot in a lighter location to better film the lyrics and props. Each line of lyrics will be filmed on a different object. Natural lighting will be used, and the video will focus on close-ups, medium, and long shots of the decorations and celebrations to match the fun atmosphere of the song.
2. Tell ‘em that is my birthday x3
When I party like that
Every night’s my birthday
They don’t know, so it’s okay
Tell ‘em that is my birthday
When I party like that
Jazz it up x2
Happy as can be, falling into you, falling into me
(so yummy)
How do you do, calling me the queen, cake 7 cream
Blow your dreams, blow your dreams, blow your dreams away with me x2
So yummy
Tell ‘em that is my birthday x3
When I party like that
Every night’s my birthday
They don’t know , so it’s okay
Tell ‘em that is my birthday
When I party like that
Jazz it up x2
Feeling fine and free
Crashing into you, crashing into me, so yummy
It’s all I wanna do, come and dance with me, pretty please
Blow your dreams, blow your dreams, blow your dreams away with me x2
Tell ‘em that is my birthday
Tell ‘em that is my birthday x2
When I party like that
Every night’s my birthday
They don’t know, so it’s okay
Tell ‘em that is my birthday
3. When I party like that
Tell ‘em that is my birthday x3
When I party like that
Every night’s my birthday
They don’t know, so it’s okay
Tell ‘em that is my birthday
When I party like that
Blow your dreams, blow your dreams, blow your dreams away with me x4
(Party hard baby)
Tell ‘em that is my birthday x3
When I party like that
Every night’s my birthday
They don’t know, so it’s okay

Every night’s my birthday
They don’t know, so it’s okay
Tell ‘em that is my birthday

4. Treatment
The song that I have chosen is called “Birthday” and it was written by Crista Russo, Jacob Hindlin and Michael
Gonzales for Selena Gomez. This song was written for Selena Gomez for her birthday and it comes from the
album called “Stars Dance” (2013). “Birthday” is a combination of electronic dance and electropunk. Similarly,
this song contains elements of dubstep and trap.
Because “Birthday” has been regarded as a “party anthem” I would like to use this theme in my lyrics video. I
would do this by using props such as balloons, presents, champagne bottles and confetti. I think this would
link well with the original music video as some of those objects are visible. To further emphasise the theme
of partying and celebrations I have decided to use light up and confetti infused balloons. This will not only be
appropriate for the target audience but it will also make the video more unique and fun.
In order to make the lyrics video more appealing I would like to use vibrant and fresh colour. There will be a
combination of a wide spectrum of colour whilst the decorations will come in various shapes and patters.
Although, the original music video was shot in an underground nightclub and in a dark room I would like my
video to be shot in a lighter location. This is because I believe that lyrics and various props would film better in
lighter conditions. However, I would like to use accents of the original video to make sure the style of the
artist matches with what I have produced.
When it comes to filming and camera movement, I would like each line of the song lyrics to be filmed on a
different object. For example, “jazz it up, jazz it up” to be filmed on cupcakes or “when I party like that” to be
presented on birthday presents.
5. The fun atmosphere of this song will be supported by the quirky elements such as decorations. Overall, this
lyrics video will be highly visual and cinematic. For most of the song, the visuals will be based on
celebrations. The camera will focus on this through a variety of close up, medium or long shots.
After “jazz it up” there will be a longer break between lyrics. This is because there is a longer music pause.
This will allow me to experiment with the camera as well as different shot types and editing. Editing will be
done in post-production and it will include various editing techniques. These techniques will include fast
forward or reverse effects.
6. Technique and production details
The problems of this lyrics video will be imposed by the low budget. A big part of the budget will be taken up
by props and decorations. Most of the decorations will be hand crafted and because of this, a lot of stationary
will be needed.
Although, this video will concentrate on “partying” and not birthday in particular I do believe that keeping the
video approachable will be recognised well by the target audience.
When it comes to lighting, I would like to use natural light from the outside. This is because this is my favourite
type of lighting to film with. Similarly, I believe that bold patterns and textures will show up better in a natural
environment. The background of this lyrics video will stay white because of the complex mis-en-scene.
This video will be shot on a Sony camera with a variety of lenses. Fluid stabilisation of the camera will be
needed in order to keep the camera steady and impact. The photography will be utilised in order to create a
natural yet rich look.
On set the audio version of the song will be available. I believe that this approach will make filming easier.
Because this lyrics video does not involve any people such as a band or dancers, the filming schedule will be
flexible. Most of the filming will have to take place before 5pm before it gets dark. This is to ensure that only
natural lighting is being used. However, when light up balloons or neon signs are being filmed this will be
filmed in darker conditions in order to achieve that party like vibe.
